Missing money: Controversy trails death of banker in car crash

25 year old banker Benjamin Idim died on December 14th in a fatal car crash after he lost control and crashed his KIA car at Utako in Abuja while returning from a visit to a friend at midnight.

Ben, who worked with Diamond Bank, Gwarimpa, Abuja, was said to have had about N2million cash in the trunk of his car at the time of the accident, but the bulk of the money has yet to be recovered, according to his family. His body and wrecked car were evacuated from the scene of the accident by the police, who said they only recovered N800, 000. The late banker's family, who has since been buried, insists there was more money in the car. Continue...

Benjamin Idim's father Ita Idim said:
“We went to the police at Utako and they handed over two phones and about N800,000, which they said was recovered from the car. Later we learnt that the money in the car was more than the amount the police gave us. The bank also confirmed that he had more than that amount with him. If the police can hand over N800,000, you can be sure he had more than that in the car. The Nigerian Police Force can’t give all the money they recovered.”
A Police Public Relations Officer in the FCT said the family needs to understand that the police was not the first responders at the scene of the accident.
“Are they sure the police were the first to arrive at the scene? Besides, saving the boy’s life would be their priority, nobody would be checking the boot of the car to know whether he had money there or the amount of money in the car,” the officer stated

Most accident scenes r crime scenes. Lots of cases of ppl stealin frm the dead.

By the way, why would somebody have 2 million naira cash in d trunk of his car, driving frm place to place?

May his soul rest in peace, my mum knew him personally and she said he was such a cool, calm and good guy; one of a kind, he just started the job with diamond bank. The sad truth is that the NPF has kept 1.2m out of the money, let them fear God and return the rest to the family cuz karma will always come calling.

Very sad. But really, what can his family do about dis? Wh8ever took the money is not going to give it up. And i have been at a car crash scene before, the priority is never to get victims to safety. Ransacking for valuables is top priority. This family should just grive in peace.

This story doesnt add up? Where does a 25yr old banker who is most likely an entry level officer; get N2m cash from? And why carry it around in ur car at night?

Anonymous said...

It was the guy's money not their money. The family should be more concerned about mourning the guy and not how much he had in the boot before his demise. Let whoever 'stole' a dead man's money bear the brunt afterwards.

Very funny and foolish statement by the police PRO. Of course the policemen would go after the money before saving any lives. Does he think he is talking to foreigners who don't know better? We are Nigerians and we know what those vultures called policemen are capable of doing. It is possible they even caused the accident.

Anonymous said...

Rip young guy,

The police officer is so daft, and just contradicted him self there buy supporting the boys family.
He says the police weren't the first to arrive at the scene then he goes on to say "saving the boys life would have been their priority and no one would be checking the trunk"
So this means the first people to arrive at the scene would have been all about saving the boys life and the trunk was only opened after the police took the car away.
The police should return that money idiots, they didn't know the family would find out the true amount.

Anonymous said...

Rip Big Ben we surely gonna miss u May your perfect soul rest in peace .

What was the man doing with that huge amount in his private /official car without escort?

How did the Bank and the family know the exact amount of money with the man at the time of the accident?

What is the source of the money?

It was the insecurity in the mind of the man that led to the accident?

If i may ask, what is a banker doing with such an amount in the light of the cashless policy?
Even though accident can happen at anytime, but we should learn to move at speed that is commensurate with a given environment that we can convienently control in the case of any eventuality.
Also, make sure ur car is in good shape mechanically and electrically.
