2 Nigerian girls seek Pres. Jonathan's intervention from deportation from Canada

Got this email from Funmi Macaulay, a US-born Nigerian presently living in Brooklyn, NYC, and the founder of Nigerians Unite Against Boko Haram (NUABH). She wrote an article about the plight of Ihuoma and Victoria, two young Nigerians living and studying in Canada who are on the verge of being deported back to Nigeria. The two girls have been holed up in a church basement the last nine months and . See Funmi's article below...
I am surprised that I have not read in any media, local or international, about efforts by the Nigerian government to help two Nigerian students who have been on deportation list in Canada for a 'crime' that makes mockery of the very ideals that western societies proud themselves on - hard work. Victoria Ordu and Ihuoma Amadi, 20 and 21 respectively, having been holed up in the basement of a church in Canada - not for document forgery. No, not for 419, internet scam or fake marriage, but for attempting to work and earn decent stipends to augment what they get from home.
See the rest after the cut...

The news media in Canada has been awash with the reports since June 2012 when the two University of Regina students took refuge in a church hoping that the Canadian authorities will forgive them for working in Walmart for two weeks. The issue here is that the student visa they carry permits them to work on campus but not outside.  The students have in their various interviews stated that they stopped the Walmart jobs immediately they became aware of the restriction.  But the Canada authorities have simply refused to budge.

Maybe the situation has lingered the way it is because of the green color of the passport they carry.  I doubt that the Canadian authorities would have held their grounds the way they've done for almost a year now if these two students were Americans, Indians, Chinese or even South Africans. As one born of Nigerian parents in the US, I have the privilege of knowing how it feels traveling with the Nigerian passport and that of the US.

It is instructive that while Walmart that employed the students have gone without any rebuke from the government, these two young ladies have remained imprisoned in a church basement for more than nine months now without knowing what day light looks like.  While immigration authorities accepted that Walmart had made an honest mistake in their hiring practices, the same leniency wasn’t granted to the students.

“Walmart was given the benefit of the doubt, while the students weren’t,” said Michelle Stewart, an associate professor in the University of Regina, who's been campaigning for the release of the two Nigerians.  “The most common response to this type of infraction is a fine of $320,” said Stewart.  "This is Canada, but it feels like hell for us," Ihuoma said in an interview with CBS Canada. "We feel forgotten here, nothing is happening at all."

Friends and well-wishers of these two students have in the last nine months mounted pressure on the Canadian government, but not much has been achieved. I have been involved in the social media campaign to drum support for these innocent young Nigerians, but much as the protests on and off line continues to grow, the Canadian authorities have remained hard-heartened.
Canada holds strong trade relations with Nigeria and is hoping to grow its economic presence in the country as a springboard to reach the rest of Africa. Being Canada's largest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa should serve as an incentive in extracting the right government action on diplomatic matters like this. This is the time for Nigeria to flex some diplomatic and economic muscles.

I remember when the reclusive North Korean government arrested two US journalists and sentenced them to 12 years imprisonment with hard labour for illegally entering the country.  President Obama sent former president Clinton to the country and in 24 hours those two lady journalists were released to join their families. Nigeria, by virtue of its economic and strategic might, can achieve similar result when efforts are made from the top. Don't think I'm naive.

I expect President Jonathan's government to act now.  Please save Victoria and Ihuoma from what their lawyer has described as 'honest mistake'.

Victoria and Ihuoma, first, I must salute you both for your courage to stand up despite overwhelming odds, I thank the good citizen of Canada especially the church giving you a refuge for the past month. I understand you are both on scholarship from your state government in Nigeria and money are not disbursed on time, hence the need to find ways to make ends meet, Only non students can critizice you that you know the law and broke the law, I will admit many students have done this before although do not get caught, Nigerian communities in Canada has also stand up for you, Please do not dispair, no matter how tough it is, there will always be something positive coming out of this, even when they send you back home, my advice if the worse come to worse, agree to go back home rather than be deported. My prayers for you both and for your families, May God help this blind country, Nigeria see someday from the dens of current robbers running the country.

Canada has suddenly become very strict in the last few years. This time last year, they eliminated 280,000 people's files who applied for permanent residency 8/9yrs ago, just because it's a privilege to be in their country, not a right.
The US does the same to people who work illegally, deport and ban them from coming into the country ever again.
The reason why former president Clinton was able to bail those women out is because the US is a strong country and Clinton is well respected.
Who respects Nigeria? the green passport, lets not talk more of Uncle Jona? It is well.

Quite a pity what we pass throught just to get a degree from abroad..if only we had a stable economic/academic standard we won't fear deportation.I doubt if d govt can be of help.

Stephen Harper is a douchbag, he is busy attending to pandas while these promising young girls are suffering for trying to work. Sometimes i don't understanding government policies, it is not in the interest of the Canadian government to encourage people to work instead of allowing them room for government handout?

★★PRINCE CHARMING™★★ said...

The question here is this.. "Where they given full work permits or not?" A "no" is the answer. Once you go out of the law by an inch it becomes a different thing all together, especially when you are not a citizen. And then, most of these developed countries want you fully financially capable before coming to study in their country, you just keep pumping in money and not taking anything out. Well, if we had a good enough Educational system they would be studying here.

Is living in Nigeria so bad that you will rather be holed in a basement for nine months than giving the stupid Canadians the middle finger and get the eff back home?

When you get a Canadian Student visa, it explicitly says that you are permitted to work outside the campus. This is a very well known fact among international students. I don't understand how these girls can claim that they did not know about this policy. Some Nigerian international student get greedy and seek employment outside the campus because outside jobs pay more, while being fully aware of the possible deportation consequence when caught. Anyways, I wish these girls the best of luck. They will need it, because this is not Naija ooo, where you can override law/policies easily.

Not to be mean but its the rule if you break it you might get deported. we have the same rule in the US. When you apply for student visa, one of the important factor is your financial capabilities, because they know you are not allowed to work once you are abroad. so i don't really understand what the outcry is for, it might be painful but if you cant afford to study abroad stay in your home country.

linda post my comment...thanks

It's not easy breaking the law. While I'm not condemning the girls, I'm simply saying there are reasons why the law was put in place and all need to follow religiously.

Bianca said...

Ms. Macauly what in the world are you talking about???? Yes, they are our fellow Nigerians but do you think we are foolish? The main reason why the Canadian govt has refused to budge and is turning a deaf ear is because these girls KNEW. Yes I said it! I came to the U.S. for my college education after secondary school and the FIRST thing you do when you arrive on campus is to meet with the ISO( International Student officer)who will then drum it into your brain that you cant be found working outside campus unless on your offtrack( holiday), they even make you sign a doc saying you understand. Everywhere you go on campus you see the warning clearly( its pretty much the same in Canada). The law is not for Naija only, or african countries. Its for all INTERNATIONAL students including Canadians that were in school with me could not also do it. So, If you are trying to garner support for these young women, please please come straight. Its a little irritating when people go abroad and think they can act like they are in Naija by breaking laws. Just know that you do so at your own risk and if they catch you, just say bye. The west doesnt play with their immigration laws. Not like in Naija we allow every God damn person to come and treat us like second hand citizens and then we start to shine teeth like mumu. I call it the complex. I am really passionate about this cos one of my good friends was deported for doing the exact same thing. It was so sad. The immigration police came and picked her up from work. She couldnt even go back to pick up her clothes. She was put straight on a plane the next day to naija from jail. She damn well knew what she was doing.

These girls must be very stupid.
Everybody who gets a student or tourist visa knows that it states clearly YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED TO WORK.

Did they not read the conditions of the visa?
If you know you do not have money to study abroad, then go to NSUKKA.
Do not go to another country to break their laws. They have committed a crime, it doesn't matter how minor it is. Other countries do not joke with their laws like we do, small or big,

They have money to buy ticket and pay school fees, so they must come from wealthy or middle class backgrounds.

The president has not solved the problem of Boko Haram or kidnappers, but he should stop the deportation of 2 silly rich girls??? Because criminals from other countries get away with their crimes?

Nonsense. They broke the law and should be deported.

See, this is simple. I'm currently studying in the U.S. When you go to school for the 1st time, you have an orientation. There, they would loudly ring it in our ears, INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS DONT WORK OFF CAMPUS. There is no way those ladies weren't aware. Aside from not working off campus, even working on campus, you cant work for more than 20HOURS A WEEK. You do 21HOURS, you are likely to get into trouble. However, so many other students take the risk of working off campus, lucky for them if they dont get caught. I feel those ladies heard similar stories, and unluckily got caught.

emarketstrategy said...

All they need is a Bsc. We have loads of awarding institutions in naija... #fact is, it's not the uni that you attend that makes you successful, what lessons do we get from bill gate...

Chinua achebe, wole soyinka and thousands of successful nigerians were trained in this same nigerian institutions ur stealing perm-sec dads ignored to send you to canada!

If we all decide to school at home, those sending you abroad will learn to fix our institution and country. The foreign exchange loss from education and medicals is dam too much to kill us left in this country.

You better be holed up or be held on a lagos bound flight.

How about people stop making the Canadian immigration look bad, a lesson in life that should be taken with all seriousness never mess around with a countries immigration. I hope the immigration spare them though.

I came to Canada here as an international student as well. Canada is the most multicultural and accomodating country you would ever live in. Funmi should stop playing the race card and take a chill pill and if I might add get educated on these things, she sounds very ignorant and is arguing blindly. Law is law here and we all know the law. Every school has international office that drums the laws into our ears. Some students want to be smart and there are scape goats like in this case. They are deporting them and not prosecuting them as criminals. Take note y'all this the western world, they don't bend the rules to fit people whatever coulour you come in, laws put people in check, it makes people accountable etc bottomline, it is the reason why it is an organized/developed society and why we all long to school and live here. If you can't handle the heat leave the kitchen, implying if you can't respect and obey their rules stay in your country.

Why is this Funmi on a long thing? Did these two girls not break Canadian law when they started working? Ignorance of the law does not make you exempt. If they've been holed up in a church basement for 9 months instead of going to school, they've definitely violated the other terms of their student visa.
I don't see how she expects Jonathan to fight for citizens who are fighting to stay out of Nigeria especially when they admittedly broke the law.
Best thing these 2 young ladies can do is return voluntarily to Nigeria & enroll in school in Ghana. Avoid that deportation stamp & they can have a chance at other foreign visas in 5 or so years. A visa to a foreign country is NOT a right.

If we can beg for mercy all well and good or get them the best lawyers if not Let them come and manage private university in Nigeria. Time is going . This abroad matter is not a do or die affair.

Unfortunately a law is a law irrespective of who nd where. How did they get there in the first place. The only think nigerian govt can do is ensure they have been treated right nd given a fair sentence nd get them home to their parents safely. Nigerian govt dint send them there so they cant ensure their stay there. You dont have to live abroad to study. Maybe its time to come back home.

Anonymous said...

Pls president GEJ and his senate should sit on this matter asap to help these students out, canadian Govt should be addressed to give these girls chance to continue their studies over there. They represent us well through hard work not prostitution.

GEJ is busy with calculations of how to rig elections in 2015. This kind of diplomatic matter is not our government concern for now (maybe they should keep staying in the church basement till after election in 2015.... LOL!!!). On a serious note, I know how painful or shameful it could be to be repertriated. Or are we talk to of the money or time spent so far, which seems to be turning to a waste. Nonetheless, these ladies need not to waste time and move on with life. Let them come back to Nigeria and enjoy their birth right as first class citizens. Being abroad is not the ultimate in life, they can make it better in Nigeria. The 9 months spent in the basement would have translated into something good for them in their own country. Please, I beg you in the name of God don't rely on GEJ irresponsible government for any intervention - they are too busy with second term agenda.

I am just trying to be fair here, every international students know that there are laws and regulation they must adhere to in every country. Why did they disobey the law by working more than the hours that was required of them. I think Nigerians should learn that there are rules and they must adhere to it. This will be a great lesson for other international students that think they can get away with whateva they do. They should know that Canada is NOT Nigeria where no one respects the law.

I don't think these girls have a good lawyer. Canada is very lenient with their immigration policy. I know people who have done worst things en are still in Canada. I don't think its as bad as the media is portraying it. If Canada really wants to deport the, they would not have stayed this long. While they are it, Govt of Saskatchewan has a program called SNIP, its a provincial nominee program that allows a province to nominate people for permanent residency. They should both see if they are eligible or better ask their lawyer to look into it while we are waiting for Jonathan en his yeye govt to interfere in this matter.

Between the writer should stop being biased. It has nothing to do with the color of their passport, even if they were Americans, they will still be deported even quicker than this 2. I av seen American citizens being deported b4 so she should stop being ignorant.

Ihuoma and Victoria are aware of such restriction.Canada is a very conservative country and they are so careful with Nigerians even with visa processing.I work with a consultancy firm that recruits students into Canadian institutions. We always tell our students that they are not permitted to work off campus until after six months of being in Canada.International Students are also warned during school orientation, i guess that was the reason the Canadian authorities were adamant to their cries. Nevertheless they ought to be pardoned.I pray they don't come back because if they do,they will never smell Canada again. let's all use social media in campaigning for these young innocent girls until it gets to the appropriate body.

Unknown said...

the Govt of GEJ will be busy forgiving Criminals, talking abt amnesty to murderers, defending lootings and stealings, and ignore the very essence of governance which is to protect the peace and lives of Nigerian whether here in Nigeria or elsewhere. This issue had been on yet GEJ has done nothing, though i am not expecting him to do anything cos he does not know what to do. But let's all of keep keep the preseure on Canadian Govt to stop the racial discrimination in this 21st century. if they could allow gay/lesbians to have full marriage rights and all recognitions accorded them, then these hard working citizens of the world should be given same right.

Anonymous said...

The only help the Nigerian government could give them at this point is to offer them scholarships to the US or the UK. Their stay in Canada is tainted and I don't believe they stand much chance because Canada would be setting a precedence case for other students. I also don't believe Canada would change its law on the matter for 2 individuals from Nigeria.

Anonymous said...

The story is not complete abeg. First off, how did they get the jobs at Walmart? If walmartbwas let off the hook without paying a fine, then it means the girls must have forged some documents or something. I know a lot of nigerians working abroad do this everyday. They should just come back to Nigeria bcos they've missed 9 months of school already. Staying in a church will even put the church in trouble for harbouring them. Ignorance of the law is no excuse. If Nigerian govt intervenes, it will be setting a very bad precedence bcos every Tom dick and harry will start to ask for government influence when they clearly broke the law.

I remember the case of the physically challenged boy in the us who was granted residence, or the so solids crash victim who is receiving so much assistance, those are clear cases of people who due to their medical needs have to be abroad. These 2 girls are able bodied and do not need our government intervening for such a trivial issue. Daz all

I don't know why people cant understand that in other countries there are laws that are to be adhered to. My daughter who is an American citizen did her Masters in London and the British law says foreign students can only work for a certain amount of hours per month. Even 1 hour over and she would be subject to deportation. Nigerians are just unruly. Just stick to the laws of whatever country you are in or stay in Nigeria and be lawless. I have no pity for them.

Anonymous said...

They were actually sent to Canada by the Rivers State Government, of which had agreements signed with individual students. The first attention needed is that of the R/S government to find out the terms and conditions given to these students, before heading up to President Jonathan. Every institution or government has laws and so on and these issue of not working outside school has been up a long time. If they have defaulted and cannot be pardoned, then they should be sent home. If we break our laws and go free, some do not.....and even if they do, not in the open.

Anonymous said...

It stinks that people deposit every slight of blame to the Government. Even a fight in the house will be pointed at the Government of its cause.

Nigeria being a lawless country has shown itself to the outside world through some dirty demeanor. How could the concern girls deviate from the rules and regulation in their schools or country of domicile, after violating the law, people now remember that we have GEJ and the Senate.

The point stands that they infringed the law by working without a permit and if the decision is deporting them, let it be swift or even pardoning them as well.

Lets not channel every slight of blame to our government besides they are not there for national interest rather on personal note which is to study. They would have obliged to the standing rules, regulation or standing law.

However, the said AMBASSADOR OJO MMADUEKWE is there, representing the name Nigeria but not its subject. I know him right from his home time as a wasted value to his community, local government and state, so i do not expect any tangible contribution from him over this issue. rather than detaining them illegally, its better they go home and try some other countries if Nigeria is not suitable for them.

Lets observe every single law enacted by the Government of any country because NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW.

As a Nigerian-Canadaian, i just knew there must be more to the story that was written. Canadian judiciary is not that stringent on immigration, there is more to this story. To work for an employer, u fill a form confirming that u are legal to work, they filled that form, they didnt work for 2 weeks, they worked for a year...Africans always think oyinbos are mumu, they are not, they only give u a time to dig your grave very deep, so when they nab u, u get buried alive by overwhelming evidences....this is probably not their first time of doing this, canadian law is lenient of 1st time offenders...its a sorry case, but maybe God is telling u something gals

I think the Canadian Authorities are being unnecessarily harsh. Their offense, after their apology should have merited only a fine and not a deportation just as suggested by a prof. in their university. Did they close down the Walmart branch that hired them. NO, so why the castigation. It's time Nigerians all over the world hold their heads up high and be treated fairly.

Riley said...

There must be more to this story. Firstly, if they are restricted to work on campus only, this would be indicated on their passport and other govt issued I'd. Also, their Social insurance would be different to those who are Citizens or Permanent residents therefore, Walmart would have had to double check to ensure they could work outside of Campus. Canada is very strict with things like this and very difficult to get by without the right documentations as you constantly need to show paperwork for everything - Doctor's, work, opening an account etc. Unfortunately, many Nigerians come here as students with the hope of changing over later. Canada unfortunately, is not like the UK or US where you can do this easily not even trying to go the route of arranged marriage. People should do their research before going anywhere these days.

Anonymous said...

The Canadian authority should prepare for war If they repatriate these 2 girls. I think it's time justice is given to the people by the people. Our leaders might be selfish and ignorant of the fact that they're being fucked around by the west but the people in this Nigeria will not allow this to happen. We all see how other countries intervene in matters relating to the welfare of their people home and abroad but for ours is another story, Our children and been slaughtered, butchered and murdered all around the country because of the evil leaders that has been sitting on our destiny since 1960. they come telling us that we're the leaders of tomorrow but their greed has made them deny us our rightful place forcing our children, brothers and sisters to engage in illegal ways to meet up.

If The Canadian Govt deports these girls then their will be a mass protest in Nigeria and sorry is the name of any Canadian citizen captured during this.
I hereby give out a warning to the Canadian Govt to reconsider their decision concerning this 2 kids else the Canadian embassies/consulate/citizens in Nigeria will know no peace and every kind off relation between Nigeria and Canada will be caught off because we shall shake even the so called leaders of Nigeria.

Let the child that has ear hear
and let that that doesn't have any be prepared for chaos/unknown.

I can't believe there are people in Nigeria that are so stupid to actually think Mr Jona should write to Canada. What an insult! That Oga president should leave all the wahala of Boko Haram, Power, Alams palava, etc and be writing to Canada to forgive people that clearly broke their laws? These people were unlucky to be caught. They are obviously not the only ones doing it. I believe because of the publicity the whole church basement thing has generated, the Canadian government will do everything possible to deport these girls if only to prove a point to other would-be students.
