'Why Nigeria's anti-gay bill sickens me' - By Chude Jideonwo

You all know who Chude Jideonwo is. In this article for CNN, he writes about the recently-passed bill in the Nigerian senate outlawing same sex marriage. Read below...
It is important to first understand that no gay Nigerian, as far as anyone knows, is seeking marriage -- in Nigeria.
You can comb the breadth of our decidedly homophobic media ("Homosexuals are in trouble!" crowed The Sun Newspapers, no doubt mirroring the excitement of its upright editorial board), and there is neither anecdotal nor empirical evidence of a clamor, even a quiet one, for gays to be married in churches, mosques or courts.

Still, our legislators were hard at work over a considerable number of weeks while the rest of sane Nigeria, in a state of suspended disbelief, ignored them; convinced that, in a country with pressing issues such as fuel subsidy removal and debilitating insecurity, this frivolous legislation would not see light of day.

Until yesterday when, of course, it did.

Our elected representatives in the Senate, armed with their version of our National Moral Code, took time off urgent national issues to tackle the even more urgent evil of gay marriages. Before we could catch our breaths, our over-paid and under-worked Senators had legalized homophobia.
According to the law, not only is gay marriage a crime punishable by a 14-year jail term, but "any person who registers operates or participates in gay... organizations" faces a decade in jail -- a clause that specifically targets the many active sexuality rights advocacy groups in the country.

By the time the House of Representatives adds its predictable voice to this and the President signs it into law, writing this kind of piece might even risk jail time.

It is important to note though that I and other aware young people who might sometimes be misidentified as the elite, may spend precious hours in vocal incredulity on Twitter and Facebook; shouting down a law that we can hardly do anything about - but we are sadly in the minority, at least for now.
You see, in Nigeria, homophobia is alive and well.

Nigerian senate passes anti-gay bill, defying British aid threat

Barely 10 days ago, the influential Nigerian blogger Linda Ikeji, shared what was supposed to be a touching story about a young man, Rashidi Williams, who had faced physical abuse for his sexuality. The comments that followed made my heart sink -- more threats of violence and death. And it wasn't a fringe minority; this is a thriving majority.

Many Nigerians are convinced that homosexuality is "of the devil", against our "culture" and an encroachment of "sad Western values.".A young man recently tweeted that "homosexuality is the cause of the present rot in America."
What rot? America's thriving Silicon Valley? A democracy it should be proud of? Or the millions of dollars in aid that its government and people have invested in treating everything from malaria to HIV in our dear country? That's forgetting that the real giant of Africa, South Africa, is the continent's bastion of sexuality rights.

"Our values are our values," the pompous senate president David Mark replies to critics of the bill.
Nonsense he can get away with, only because a large segment of our educated population is unaware that animals have been found to be gay.

Dead cliches like "God did not make Adam and Steve" continue to get excited choruses from sedated congregations and people still declare with ignorance that "homosexuality is not a part of our culture", conveniently skimming over historical evidence of the practice in the East and North of the country; and blissfully unaware that the origins of homophobia in our societies can only be traced to the influx of foreign religions.

Uganda's parliament takes no action on anti-gay bill

Indeed, you have to weep for a people that decry "foreign imperialism" on one hand, and then ignorantly hide under the cover of colonial influences to perpetuate intolerance.

It's the same country whose ex-president recently paid a 'courtesy visit' to appease confessed terrorists; the same country where four men who savagely raped a girl and recorded it on video were defended by a police chief as "dealing with snobbish girls." Indeed, what else can one expect from a Senate that houses a member who defiled and took for a wife, a girl barely in her teens only last year?
But gays -- who only pray for the right to be left alone since they do the rest of us no harm - are the mortal threat to our "moral fabric". They severely threaten the moral fabric of a nation which finds its place in the bottom of corruption rankings years in a row thanks to politicians like Mark who have sodomized the populace for decades now.

Today, I am ashamed to be Nigerian.

But it's not because a gang of morally questionable legislators has forced through a piece of legislation that is both irrelevant and irresponsible.

It's rather because, in a country burdened by a lethal mix of misplaced priorities, confused sense of culture and an ignorant electorate, this intolerance is in fact a popular decision.

We have allowed the politicians to fool us once again.

I believe the vast majority of straight relationships are not aimed at procreation. They are rather based on contraception! Before and after pills, condoms, withdrawal, and rampant abortions. I imagine countless barren women are the victims of these abortions. Yet most will say homosexuality operates against procreation. Loving somebody is a human need. You can be creative and a blessing to the world without procreating. Some of the comments here have shown that many great people in human history did not procreate, and cherished their same gender romantic attachments. No question about it - Chude is a hero. Truly insightful people often have views which the majority of the populace would reject. The scholars in the time of Columbus were convinced that the world was flat! Homophobia reflects uninformed superstition and ignorance. Chude Jideonwo is a hero.

I am a Nigerian. I support homosexuality. I support the right of adults to have sex with other consenting adults.
I support the use of condoms to prevent the spread of STDs and AIDS.

Linda, this has got to be your most commented upon post!

i want to start by saying all those people that are calling Chude names need to stop! The man has a valid right to express himself which he has done. If anyone disagrees with what he has said the person should simply canvass his points and not resort to insults. I understand that this is a very raw topic among Nigerians right now but still i believe we can disagree without insulting the man. I mean if you look at his write up, at no time did he insult anyone for being homophobic.

Now moving on, I have had the pleasure and privilege of meeting Chude and he's someone that i have a great deal of respect for. i must also say that i agree with him to the extent that our lawmakers have their priorities all messed up. With everything that is going on in the country at the moment, I would have thought the threat of homosexuality would have been the last item on their agenda. Don't get me wrong, I quite believe that it is a phenomenon that is on the increase, i just don't believe that it is as imminent a threat as, say, the current security situation in the country.

That however, is where my agreement ends.

I have my opinions as regards homosexuality and i have never been afraid or ashamed to express them. i believe that homosexuality is an aberration. It is a disturbing deviation from God's design. I believe there was a reason God place male and female in the garden of Eden. Not 2 males nor 2 females. Even a mere look at the "plumbing" will tell you that some parts are meant to be entrances and some are meant to be exits! its simple biology really.

Homosexuality has been with us for a very long time but has only in more recent times started to gain acceptance the world over. But you see, the fact that every advance country accepts it does not make it right because by this very vein we might as well say sleeping with animals is acceptable. Then while we're at it lets let the pedophiles practice their proclivities in peace. Then people that find corpses attractive should also not be prosecuted.

I will end by saying, those that are crying out for the blood of homosexuals to flow, especially those in the church, should be ashamed of themselves! While I may not be in support of the act of homosexuality, I also believe that violence toward this group of persons is not the solution. In most cases violence will only strengthen their resolve. What they need is love, prayers and patience. I have friends who are gay and i have always made it clear to them that though I don't their choice of sexual orientation (YES IT IS A CHOICE), I still respect them as human beings and as friends.

That's my incoherent two cents!

I haven't been engaging the media as actively as I should, our leaders in the senate have misbehaved time without number but I applauded this action they took.

Chude, guy you fall my hand. Shebi your parents are christians, didn't you learn that God said he that finds a wife finds a good thing not he that finds another man.

You need to shut up, it seems your influence is starting to get to you and remember pride comes before a fall.

My advice is you need to retrace your steps

First, a little about me, in order that you understand where my views come from:

I am Canadian but born in Nigeria. I am Igbo. My father is a professor in Canada. My parents were active in the pan-African movements of the 60s and 70s. I was babtised Catholic but now live as an Atheist. I have two degrees. I visited Nigeria after a long absence this past December and I am, indeed, female. There is my background.

My points

1. To all those using the Western vs Nigerian culture argument, you are proper examples of what lack of serious thought and education can do. First, in the traditional IGBO culture, people of "double spirits" were recognised. Men, who identified as female spirits, and vice versa, were deemed conduits to the spiritual world. They were not shunned. They were part of the culture and played important roles. This same phenomenon can be seen in all (yes all) pre-Christianised and/or pre-westernised society. In the times before we were "discovered" by the white west, we recognised the simple truth that apparently some of us need to be retaught. That truth is that nature, or biology, is not always a dichotomy. Nature, biology, makes mistakes. The human body is full of mistakes: the proximity of our reproductive members to our excretory organs, the appendix that is now unneeded by the body, our eye lens that inverts images and forces our brains to go through one extra step and invert the picture it receives, our natural susceptibility to viruses and disease, genetic mutations that are passed on in our children, etc. BTW, blue eyes is a genetic mistake most associated with northern Europeans but there are black people - pure Africans that have natural blue eyes. Should we condemn all blue-eyed people?

So, if your argument is that we should persecute homosexuality because it is a western "disease" then you are sorely incorrect. Homosexuality is a natural phenomenon. We new that BEFORE the white man came and told us that Jesus doesn't like homosexuals. (BTW, Jesus never mentioned anything about Homosexuals just as he never condemned slavery. If you want to take your morality strictly on what Jesus said, and I mean just what he himself said, not what was said about him or the dogma that the church has taken 2000 years to develop, then you will find yourself doing things that most would find egregious - including slavery but you would also find yourself neither for nor against homosexuality because... once again, he never said anything about it. And if you feel like quoting from the old testament lines to me, don't bother. The quotes you are thinking of are adjacent to the ones that tell you to stone young women that have been defiled and advice you to take the young virgins of any community you defeat in battle and kill the men and old women of that community. If you agree with the condemnation of Homosexuals because of what the Bible says, then you will have to explain to me why you do not agree with some of the other more colourful "recommendations" in the Bible.

In conclusion to point 1:
-Homosexuality was a part of our culture but that changed AFTER western intervention.
-Relying on the Bible for support against homosexuality is a poor exercise in data and quote mining. If you take one part of the Bible to be true, why not take all of it? Why won't you stone your daughter if she is raped? Why won't you kill your cow if you see a man or young boy touching it inappropriately? Why won't you go rampaging for communities to destroy in order to take their young virgins? Etc.

2.As alluded to, homosexuality is natural. You will find it in all higher level animals. A select list: elephants, monkeys, apes, lions, birds...

3.Science has proven that homosexuality is natural. Google it.

4.It is incorrect to say that homosexuality is a western phenomenon. The west, notably, America, is still very much anti-gay. Homosexuals fought and continue to fight for their rights. It was not an easy process and it came AFTER the civil rights movements (the civil rights movement was the black fight for rights in the 50s, 60s and 70s). Homosexuals are now given certain protects because of two things: One, the US is a Democratic Republic. Democratic means, in latin, "rule of the people", which means the majority decides. Republic means, "public matter", as in governing must effect all in the same manner and Law is what governs. So on one hand, what the majority decides is the law but the law cannot restrict unjustly any member of the public. This is how both black and homosexual Americans were able to demand their rights. On both counts, although the majority of the people were against the decision, there is a natural right not to be condemned for who you are especially if your being does not harm anyone. The same argument was used for mixed-"race" marriages. Simply put, two people who decide to be with each other do not harm you - just as a gay man/woman who wants to be with another gay/woman man does not harm you. They are not asking you to watch. They are not asking you to participate. Even if you think it is a sin. Then it is their sin and it doesn't affect you at all.

In conclusion to point 4:
-the west is generally still Anti-gay
-Homosexuals fought for their rights (just as Blacks and Women did)
-using laws to condemn homosexuals is only legally allowed if the country works on the premise that laws can be used to stem individual freedoms and that the majority can decide for everyone (this may sound good to you now but what happens when the majority of Nigeria is Moslem and they start to demand that all women have their clitori cut off or make alcohol illegal? Think about that.

That is really all I have to say. But on last thing: have you ever wondered why anyone would want to be gay in a country that would put them in jail for 10 years for being so? Why would anyone CHOSE this? This is not a choice.

onye said...

Just look at the plumbing? Seriously? You are actually using that as an argument? First, that would mean any sort or oral pleasure should be banned. Followed by the use of the female anus for pleasure (not a fan of that but if a woman likes it, she has a right to it). Self-pleasure should be eliminated next... why don't we get rid of kissing too. Mouths don't seem to fit together.

Homosexuality has just STARTED to gain acceptance? wow... ever heard of the Greeks? The Romans. Spartans? The Japanese Samurai? Traditional African cultures? Traditional Aboriginal cultures from Australia and North America? Actually all (yes ALL) pre-christian cultures (and many christian cultures) have an understanding and, if not acceptance, then tolerance for homosexuality.

I find your comparison between homosexuality and bestiality, pedophilia, etc offensive. Homosexuals do not force themselves on people. They do not set out to do physical harm. Homosexual relationships are between 2 CONSENTING people.... Key word: CONSENTING.

As for the matter of choice, did you choose to be heterosexual or did you find you just developed that way? As far as comments go, at least you didn't set out to be rude. But that is the real essence of this problem. Seemingly nice people still say idiotic things. You have unfortunately shown yourself to be unlearned and lacking in the ability to rationalise and think things through... When heterosexuals proclaim that homosexuality is a choice, I can do nothing but shake my head and wonder how such a person can survive with such an infantile mental capacity...

This is the least of all the trouble we have in Nigeria now. But if some people fell that's what they want to focus on; it's ok, but i don't think we should, there are better things to talk about.

I love it when Nigerians run to the bible whenever they want to defend their stupid blind ideas, the fool above says "he who finds a wife etc" and some other foolish nonsense. My question is.. WHY DONT U REMEMBER THE BIBLE SAYS YOU SHOULD NOT LOOK AT A WOMAN WITH LUST - DID YOU FORGET THAT PART?

NO ENVY, GOSSIP, FORNICATION, ADULTERY, LIARS, WHOREMONGERS ETC - DID YOU FORGET THAT PART TOO - OR YOU'RE JUST NOT GOING TO BRING THOSE ONES UP SINCE THEY AFFECT YOU...THIS IS WHY NIGERIA WILL REMAIN A ZERO.

To all of you who claim that homosexuality is a Western or 'other country' phenomenon and an 'abomination' - where do the latter thoughts originate? Christianity, I take it. Hang on, though, isn't Christianity a predominantly Western religion? So why are you 'virtuous', 'pure' and 'self-righteous' Nigerians adopting a very Western idea that destroyed your own traditional practices while bemoaning and reviling a biological state that isn't even 'Western' or cultural?

People like you are the contributors to Africa constantly remaining in the Iron Age of ignorance culturally, mentally and logically. You complain about oppression from other nations yet don't see the hypocrisy in your vile, abominable, haughty, egotistical and inhuman vilification of perfectly normal fellow human beings. You're a disgrace to yourselves, not to mention 'your God[s' - whichever ones you worship and fight and kill for] and to humankind in general and shouldn't actually be called humans because that's an insult to rational people like the person writing this comment.
