'I'm not Nigerian; I'm British' - Chi Onwurah, MP

Member of Parliament for Newcastle Central, Chi Onwurah has declared that she is not a Nigerian but British.

The Labour Party politician stated this at the 2017 Caine Prize for African Literature ceremony held yesterday night in London.

According to Nigerian journalist and writer, Molara Wood, when told of Abike Dabiri-Erewa's congratulatory letter, she said:
"I am not Nigerian; I am British"
Last month, Abike Dabiri, the Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora released a congratulatory letter addressed to the Chinyelu Onwurah and 6 other British-Nigerians elected to the UK parliament.
According to her, "this electoral victory shows that Nigerians excel anywhere in the world."

But its very true. Abike's congratulatory message was out of order. You were not part of someone's struggle. You don't know how they hot where they are and you're rushing to align with the person's success. Classic case of succes having many fathers and failure being an orphan

The woman may have been born there and knows nothing about Nigeria. why are they trying to reap where they didnt sow? i mean the Government? Haven't they seen how Nigerians want to be out of this country? the suffering is too much

Eluku said...

Glad her black ass (or has she bleached white?) and others like her don't claim to be Nigerian.
We don't need the increase in population.
We need more migration of people like her out of the population.

You are obviously very naive about these issues. Almost all these people from nigerian descent elected into the british parliament were born and breed in the UK. Very unlikely they even own Nigerian passports. So yes, they are British of Nigerian descent dear. Don't beat yourself too much about it. That's just simply what it is. She didn't make that statement to diss. Just a statement of fact. Ciao.

Agbomen said...

Exactly! What snobbery!

Emy said...

She is not Nigerian na crime.Abike pls congratulate buhari for his good works. They say, charity begins at home. Leave Onwurah alone.Itiboribo.

AGB said...

@Mr 47. Exactly what I always tell Nigerians who are so quick to claim people with Nigerian names.

Anonymous said...

Gbam!!!

Uncle Arthur said...

I'm inclined to believe that her statement was more of an affirmation of her British allegiance than a denial of her Nigerian heritage, for political reasons.

You are very correct. Nigerians are to emotional and sometimes in a very wrong and dogmatic way. That she is bearing a Nigerian name doesn't mean she is Nigerian. She could be Nigerian descent but not a Nigerian. Two Nigerian couple can give birth to children who are not Nigerian but of Nigerian descent period.

Was it not British that colonized Nigeria. Even though Chi claims that she is not a Nigeria good to us. Our leaders have to rethink in managing the country.
