Reptiles have invaded our hostel - UNTH student shares photo

From a LIB reader who is a student of University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu
"Recently we started seeing these reptiles in our hostel at UNTH Enugu old site (school of perioperative nursing hostel ). From what my course mates are saying this is the baby, the bigger ones come out only once in a while. We now move around with sticks and matches at night in case of any attack."

That is a monitor lizard. It is not harmful to humans and will eat eggs, smaller reptiles, fish, crickets, fruit etc. There is no reason to fear or attack them. They are an endangered species so please don't kill them. We don't value species extinction in Nigeria but let's start now.

So monitor lizards are close at hand? Well, it is Africa, I am not sure what can be done, except placing the natural predators of these lizards close by. That is if the natural predators are not dangerous to humans. Boko Halal going into all these places and disturbing the animals and now the animals are coming out. i don't even want to see these lizards on my tv muchless up close like this.

Unknown said...

You are a fool for saying monitor lizards dont exist in Nigeria. Go and do ur research very well before u type rubbish on dis blog. I have seen plenty here in Niaja.

Anonymous said...

@ anon 9:22pm, dats Unth for real. I stayed there for five years. Did my nursing and midwifery there so I knw every nook and cranny. Dat place is d front of midwifery hostel (former theatre b4 unth moved to perm site as u can see dat d passage is sloppy to aid wheeling patients into d theatre wit trolley)and peri-operative nursin hostel is just by d side. Most of the buildings was converted to hostels. So dis story it's real.

Unknown said...

Hmm dis Royal na wa oooo hope u follow 4 dis givaway 2day

Anonymous said...

Stop causing unnecessary scare. This is bush meat. We cal it antaa

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous 9:22p.m, I beg to differ. I can state here authoritatively that they do exist in Nigeria. I served in south-south Bayelsa (akassa to be precise) over a decade ago...and siting iguanas, pythons n several other reptiles was pretty much a daily occurrence...even more frequent if u venture out often.

perempe said...

Monitor or security lizards, should they be seen moving about in a hostel like this? In the picture above, is your concern the lizard alone? Does the hostel not look dilapidated to you guys? Nigerians and complacency! !!

@anonymous 9:22 it is a monitor lizard,true...but you don't just go Google something and come here saying the story is fake...these creatures exist here whether you think its true or not.. You have more dangerous ones that come out once a while

Anonymous said...

@ anon 9:22. U dnt knw wat ur saying. These creatures do exist in nija. One was even killed in my neighbour hood.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous shut up! We had a monitor lizard that lived in our roof in Enugu for 8 years. Yes.
The other ones went away with their mother. It hatched late. Don't even ask me where it came from. When it got too big to climb the roof it went away (it ate uo all the rats, and didn't give us any problems, it was a pet, scary one).
In Ihembosi Anambra, these creatures exist too! To buttress my fact that they exist in Nigeria, it has an Igbo, hausa and yoruba name. Our people do not name non existent creatures or things. They exist in the north and south too(it has an Ijaw name). Better luck next time in leading people astray anony :)

That's a baby komodo dragon. We killed one back then in Abuja hostel in Unilorin. The adult ones are very big and hardly venture out. Its dangerous coz a bite can infect with series of bacteria in their saliva.
