Gen. Murtala Mohammed - assasinated exactly today 39 years ago

General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, born November 8, 1938, was assassinated in Lagos in February 13th 1976. He was just 38 years old and had only been head of State for less than seven months.

The late Head of State who was well loved, took power on July 30th 1975 in a bloodless coup against Gen. Yakubu Gowon's administration. Gowon was overthrown while at an OAU summit in Uganda.

Murtala Muhammed was killed along with his aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Akintunde Akinsehinwa, on February 13, in a failed coup attempt led by Lt. Col Buka Suka Dimka. Murtala's car was ambushed while on his way to his office at Dodan Barracks, Lagos. He was succeeded by the Chief of Staff, Supreme HQ, Olusegun Obasanjo. Dimka was later executed for Murtala's assassination.

I guess most of the people on this blog are not old enough to know that he was a mass murderer who led the Asaba massacre. I would rather say that he was killed in a drive-by shooting by fellow gangstas and not assassinated. He saw to the death of over 750 non-combatant males of Igbo origin in Asaba; old and young. His soul is already where he deserved, in the company of Josef Mengele, Reinhardt Heydrich, Himmler etc. People should pick up books and read once in a while.

A great man indeed. still have never heard anything negative about him all these years. I agree with Anonymous, "NIGERIA REALLY LOST IT WHEN HE WAS KILLED".

Unknown said...

Thank u Linda for this post on a great leader in response to my comment and sms. He is worth celebrating!

Unknown said...

Great Man!!....

Unknown said...

That assassination was very unnecessary. It increased the years of military rule in Nigeria. However, it re-wrote the leadership history of Nigeria. Text Fortune to 33020.

Thank you!
Nigeria really needs more history teachers.
The chief priest before me taught me this!

At 38, he was the Head of State. Why cant we have young people like this in power?

Unknown said...

Beloved? Cos he was assassinated huh

Anonymous said...

The man was a murderous.evil and despicable human being who killed many people in his quest for power and to enthrone Hausa/Fulani hegemony all over Nigeria. Only an ignorant human being who doesnt know anything about Nigerian history will think that Murtala was a hero. This man led other soldiers to kill over 300 fellow citizens in Lagos in July 1966 just because they were Igbos. Evil incarnate!

NobleC said...

Eddy u are so right. He led the massacre of my people at Asaba. Unarmed women and children who came out to dance and welcome them singing"one Nigeria". Many on this blog do not know this. Many families have not experienced closure. Every tribe has to face the ghosts of its past and heal. Only then can there be true unity. Forcing us to live together these past decades has not and will never be effective.

He had to have being the best military ruler because at his death he had only 20 naira in his account.

Loved that man! I remember that day, I had just turned 5 and I cried like the baby I was! lol. Much respect to the Mohammed family.

Unknown said...

History is good. Come to think of it: to think that Obasanjo wants to continue being in the corridors of power of this nation is sheer wickedness, greed and selfishness. When does he expect the younger generation to take over independently? It is well o.
God will surely deliver this nation from those that think they are the lords of this our dear nation.

May his soul RIP

Aka Ikenga u are d man of d moment. Am amazed that Nigerians in general and ndi Igbo in particular don't know their history. I can never say any bad thing about d dead but he died d way he lived.

Anonymous said...

@ Aka Ikenga. Well said. Too many people in Asaba grew up without their fathers because MM and his cronies saw it fit to gather men and boys of varying ages and slaughter them. I am one of those children.
How dare anyone celebrate him......

Anonymous said...

No. I believe Gowon was younger 32 or so. I think OBJ was also about 38/39 during his first tenure. I guess one can say he was the youngest to die. RIP Sir.

Anonymous said...

You are so wonderful. It was brilliant of you to place this post

Anonymous said...

Was waiting for this kind of comment.
Thank you.

His murder was painless compared to what he made others face. The war was already over when Murtala Muhammed marched in and massacred women and children left behind in present day Delta state.

I hope God can forgive him.
His quest for power led him to his death.
He deserves no pity. He wasn't great. His only legacy is the trail of blood and his face on a defaced, depreciated 20 naira note.

What was his offense? Attempting to stamp out indiscipline and corruption, and make Nigeria a descent society to live in. This monsterous jinx holding down Nigeria has been there since a long time ago.

All this are doing the military regime then. Thank God for civilian that has taken over power if not we would have still be experiencing things like this. Continue to rest in peace sir Murtala Muhammed
