Lagos state government supports FG September resumption date

The Lagos state Government has thrown its weight behind the September 22nd public and private schools resumption date by the Federal government following efforts to contain the Ebola virus outbreak in the country.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the state governor on Media, Lateef Raji, the state government says following the non-existence of any Ebola virus patient in the state, it is safe for students to return back to their classes. Find the statement after the cut...

1. Concerning the resumption of all public and private nursery, primary and secondary schools for the 2014/2015 session, Lagos State Government supports the September 22, 2014 date, which was announced by the Federal Government after a national consultation on efforts to contain the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Nigeria.
2. Although this resumption date is advisory, as education is a concurrent matter to be regulated by the respective Federal and States Authorities, Lagos State Government considers it eminently justifiable, in view of the fact that there is currently no known carrier of EVD in our State at the moment. Furthermore, the last individual suspected to have been exposed to the virus will be discharged from observation on September 18, 2014, if he tests negative for the virus. All public and private educational institutions in the State are therefore directed to schedule their resumption accordingly.
3. Considering the current situation report, it is clear that the risk of infection with EVD in Lagos State has been significantly reduced. Health professionals working on the outbreak are also in agreement that there is no reason why schools should remain closed beyond the 22nd of September, 2014.
4. In spite of the foregoing, the State Government has now developed and will deploy all resources necessary to sustain the capacity to promptly take into custody any person suspected to be infected with EVD, as well as safely test, monitor and isolate such a person for treatment as may be found necessary without endangering other members of the public.
5. We also acknowledge the need for everyone to remain very vigilant, as the disease still remains in other countries within the sub-region. The following steps will therefore be taken in all schools, whether public or private, before and after resumption of schools:
(a) Training and sensitization of students, vendors, teachers and non academic staff on EVD and how to avoid it;
(b) Identification of EVD Focal Persons in schools who would be responsible for surveillance and health monitoring;
(c) Provision of adequate environmental sanitation, including clean toilets and premises;
(d) Provision of running water and soap and encouragement of frequent hand washing;
(e) Sensitisation of students on other personal hygiene habits, like the use of handkerchiefs when sneezing or coughing; and
(f) Arrangement for prompt referral of any sick person to the nearest health institution for treatment.
7. In spite of the foregoing, the State Government reiterates that the health of all its residents is a matter of utmost importance and, if any reasons emerge for a reconsideration of the school resumption date, a well-considered decision will be taken and the general public will be informed accordingly.
  1. The State Government salutes the health personnel and health institutions that have done their best to ensure the containment of EVD. Government officials will meet presently with those health institutions, which might have suffered adverse economic consequences as a result, and will find ways of assisting them to mitigate their loses and safely reopen for business as soon as possible.
    Signed: Lateef Raji. Special Adviser On Information And Strategy. September 12, 2014

its so heart breaking that this statement issued by the lagos state government without being told is in reference to our private schools. has anyone bothered visiting the public schools and even some so called private schools, you would weep for some (if not most) of them are no better than the schools in the interior villages. yes the federal and lagos state governments have issued their command on date of resumption of schools but mothers no one apart from the heavenly father loves your child(ren)more. dont be in a hurry to send your children to school.

They should really sit tight about this issue before they can come to a decision.

Negative minds full dis blog and that is why things are the way they are, remember what u say is who u are, let's be positive about this nation and believe things will change, remember martin luther king jr,mandela inspite what was happening to their country then, they refused to see the negative side they only saw a bright future and it came to pass . Please people should aways see the good side of things abeg. Wen ever linda post any thing before u know it negative comment starts pouring in. Linda u are building a negative minded nation here ooo and it will not do them good, always looking for who to blame,curse,criticize, the funny thing is that they have not contributed any meaningful thing to the sphere of contact not to talk of the whole nation. I happen to have chat with some of ur libers and I have to stop chatting with them cause they complain a lot, so much negatism. Haba, I was so concern about these people's mindset it needs transformation.. Linda pls re orientate ur libers. " Am deeply sorry if my comment offended any of u". "Truth hurts they say". One love. Thanks and God bless u all

Ebola or Elabo God will protect my family. Naija must survive. Let d school remained closed and everybody stay indoor until Ebola packed his load

The government says there is no ebola case again. You should all move away from panic mode. It is this same attitude that made people to die from taken too much salt to prevent ebola. This same attitude made a Liberian woman commit suicide in Lagos. This same attitude is making If care is not taken this same attitude will put our educational system in shambles. We should conquer our fears not succumb to it.

The state gov. And fed govmnt aren't foolish.

seriously, from these comments, it seems like some ppl are actually hoping for another ebola outbreak… they said the last case has been discharged! what exactly would be d reason for moving resumption to october please… the truth is majority of nigerians don't take education seriously enough.. when waec results come out now they'll be d same ppl complaining about the "30% pass rate"

anonymous said...

Y cant these pple wait till october
for confirmation that indeed nigeria is ebola free?

Anonymous said...

It's funny how people think. We should keep schools closed even when the minister of health says otherwise. Nigerians always knowing it all. So what happens to the students writing SSCE? And should they fail we blame the same govt. is keeping the students at home the solution or taking proactive measures? Just my thots.

Like seriously!!! Some people who hide under anonymous are annoying am sorry if any1 feels offended but truth be told why d rush??? D fear of ebola is d beginning of wisdom. Even the governor of lagos state said it that since we the disease is still in Africa were are all in danger! Why is it hard 4 you all to understand!!! It spreads like wild fire!!!! Na wah ooo

@mummy 3… 1st of all, people are allowed to have a difference of opinions..
besides if we decide to wait till the disease is completely eradicated from "other parts of africa" then i'm afraid the pupils will lose a whole year of school which i strongly feel is unnecessary… some ppl say after all the pupils are not working towards a degree but you forget that primary and secondary school education is the foundation of their higher education… like i said before, nigerians need to take education more seriously. in my opinion, there's absolutely no reason to postpone the resumption date… I'm actually impressed at the way the disease has been contained thus far. May the souls of d ppl that lost their lives to it rest in peace

Some parents want october cos deir children sch fess neva ready,make una talk truth jor.

Anonymous,we all want our children to resume. We also want them to be safe. The state ovt says the last case, if tested negative by Sept 18th, will be discharged. There is no guarantee yet. Let us wait till Sept 18 to make any decisions on resumption. There is no hurry.
Let us pray for healing in Nigeria. U are right, we cannot stay home till the EVD is eradicated in Africa, but we can ensure safety for our children as best we could in our own state.
