Federal Government set to ban 'Ponmo'?

Looks like it. According to a Vanguard report, the Federal Government is looking at banning the sale and consumption of Ponmo. Find the report below...
This indication emerged Tuesday when the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina called for competent regulations that would check the consumption and sale of the product. If this is achieved, he noted that livestock farmers would stand good chances of making high dollar return if the hides and skins (Ponmo) are tanned into leather.
The minister who was represented at the occasion by the Director, Animal Production and Husbandry in the Ministry, Dr. Ademola Raji, said,
"I also commend NIAS for its advocacy and public enlightenment programs on Radio and Television that promote value addition in Livestock, as against sale and consumption of primary products alone, particularly with the issue of curtailing the widespread consumption of hides and skins as Kpomo which ought to be tanned into leather for a very high dollar return to the farmer and Tanneries. I expect that competent regulations acceptable by all stakeholders will be developed so as to give credibility that our set standards for food safety are being implemented which will boost value addition.”

Lol, should this decision not lie with the farmers? What they choose to do with their cows is entirely up to them. My two cents.

Their reason is flimsy. Anyway, if they like they should set up a task force that will be check-mating those selling ponmo.

Stupid government. How can they not know that the typical yoruba woman will buy plenty ponmo to cook soup, so that it will look like there are plenty obstacles(meat) in the pot of soup, while conserving money to buy a very expensive lace for Owambe...... Pls o, make una pity yoruba people o!

On the other hand, it should not be a thing of force. They can sell some and use some for leather. We run a democratic system of government yet everything na force(military style). Na wa o!
BTW, anyone wey abuse me for saying my mind shall suffer memory loss, except i am not the queen of the coast.

I don't think this can work, besides farmer can still export the ones for leather while some r left for consumption as always.

Oh silly move. why isn't the industry buying the kponmo and tan it to leather before it gets to the market as "kponmo"? Why legislate? let common sense and economics distate here guys!

Anonymous said...

This minister is very stupid and this policy is very absurd and one sided. Ponmo consumption has been since we were born, its part of recipe for delicious food and also as meat. Those in leather production should work harder to increase their own production and it should not affect the consumption of ponmo as food consumption. Food consumption should even be priority to the minister agriculture instead of think of increase dollar income..... Let's make cool extra cash, click and register www.referbizpay.com/?ref=7508

The Minister of Agriculture has succeeded in changing the name of the revered ministry to Ministry of Ponmo Affairs thereby getting the appellate - #MinisterOfPonmoAffairs. This is definitely needless. In this time and age, other countries are thinking of developing new ideas to increase local capacity in terms of food production, he's busy thinking of leather. Is that a priority now? Someone should tell him that those who are true and Yorubas knows tradition that you don’t take the substance of livelihood from people and expect praises. How can the government come up with such draconian policy all in the name of high dollar returns? Nigerians should be first in the thinking of the Ministry and not outsiders. What about the local production and consumption, do we need to export everything before we make profit? As I air my views, China is hosting the Summer World Economic Forum with the focus on innovation towards development. How is Agriculture in Nigeria being driven by Nigerians? He should address the issue of Zimbabwean (Songhai) farmers that settled somewhere in Kwara State during Obasanjo's regime. Where are the products of these farmers? He's not talking about increasing our oil palm industry to compete with that of Indonesia and Malaysia. He is also not taking initiatives on cocoa production to either match or surpass that of Cote divorce. This is what happens when the leadership has nothing to offer to the populace.

I rest my case (for now).

Very funny to hear this minister blab. We can't be deceived this is for our best interest. How on earth could this minister come out to preach the sermon of making lots of money from kpomo if turned into hides when as a minister, he is an integral part of the cabinet who makes the decision to flare billions of dollars in natural gas into the air every day. Could someone ask this minister to leave this little rat called kpomo for the poor masses and concentrate his chase on how to turn the trillion dollars natural gas flared and wasted for decades into some serious cash for us. I know his family does not eat it as they are in Yankee chopping stakes, turkey, duckbreast and salmon. Jokers! Kpomo stays! Chikina

When they vividly know that some poor MASSes can't afford meat to complement to their FOOD. Why can't they tackle high cost of food stuffs, inferior imported goods, unemployment, security, poverty, power sector, corruption, high cost of governance, electoral malpractices, low standard of education ANd health sector etc. May God open the eye of NIGERiaN mases to know what is good for them cos most of us don't actually know their right or left.
