Must read! Chimamanda Adichie writes on the anti-gay law

I will call him Sochukwuma. A thin, smiling boy who liked to play with us girls at the university primary school in Nsukka. We were young. We knew he was different, we said, ‘he’s not like the other boys.’ But his was a benign and unquestioned difference; it was simply what it was. We did not have a name for him. We did not know the word ‘gay.’ He was Sochukwuma and he was friendly and he played oga so well that his side always won.
In secondary school, some boys in his class tried to throw Sochukwuma off a second floor balcony. They were strapping teenagers who had learned to notice, and fear, difference. They had a name for him. Homo. They mocked him because his hips swayed when he walked and his hands fluttered when he spoke. He brushed away their taunts, silently, sometimes grinning an uncomfortable grin. He must have wished that he could be what they wanted him to be. I imagine now how helplessly lonely he must have felt. The boys often asked, “Why can’t he just be like everyone else?”

Possible answers to that question include ‘because he is abnormal,’ ‘because he is a sinner, ‘because he chose the lifestyle.’ But the truest answer is ‘We don’t know.’ There is humility and humanity in accepting that there are things we simply don’t know. At the age of 8, Sochukwuma was obviously different.  It was not about sex, because it could not possibly have been – his hormones were of course not yet fully formed – but it was an awareness of himself, and other children’s awareness of him, as different. He could not have ‘chosen the lifestyle’ because he was too young to do so. And why would he – or anybody – choose to be homosexual in a world that makes life so difficult for homosexuals?

The new law that criminalizes homosexuality is popular among Nigerians. But it shows a failure of our democracy, because the mark of a true democracy is not in the rule of its majority but in the protection of its minority – otherwise mob justice would be considered democratic. The law is also unconstitutional, ambiguous, and a strange priority in a country with so many real problems. Above all else, however, it is unjust. Even if this was not a country of abysmal electricity supply where university graduates are barely literate and people die of easily-treatable causes and Boko Haram commits casual mass murders, this law would still be unjust.  We cannot be a just society unless we are able to accommodate benign difference, accept benign difference, live and let live. We may not understand homosexuality, we may find it personally abhorrent but our response cannot be to criminalize it.

A crime is a crime for a reason. A crime has victims. A crime harms society. On what basis is homosexuality a crime? Adults do no harm to society in how they love and whom they love. This is a law that will not prevent crime, but will, instead, lead to crimes of violence: there are already, in different parts of Nigeria, attacks on people ‘suspected’ of being gay. Ours is a society where men are openly affectionate with one another. Men hold hands. Men hug each other. Shall we now arrest friends who share a hotel room, or who walk side by side? How do we determine the clunky expressions in the law – ‘mutually beneficial,’ ‘directly or indirectly?’

Many Nigerians support the law because they believe the Bible condemns homosexuality. The Bible can be a basis for how we choose to live our personal lives, but it cannot be a basis for the laws we pass, not only because the holy books of different religions do not have equal significance for all Nigerians but also because the holy books are read differently by different people. The Bible, for example, also condemns fornication and adultery and divorce, but they are not crimes.
For supporters of the law, there seems to be something about homosexuality that sets it apart. A sense that it is not ‘normal.’ If we are part of a majority group, we tend to think others in minority groups are abnormal, not because they have done anything wrong, but because we have defined normal to be what we are and since they are not like us, then they are abnormal. Supporters of the law want a certain semblance of human homogeneity. But we cannot legislate into existence a world that does not exist: the truth of our human condition is that we are a diverse, multi-faceted species. The measure of our humanity lies, in part, in how we think of those different from us. We cannot – should not – have empathy only for people who are like us.

Some supporters of the law have asked – what is next, a marriage between a man and a dog?’ Or ‘have you seen animals being gay?’ (Actually, studies show that there is homosexual behavior in many species of animals.) But, quite simply, people are not dogs, and to accept the premise – that a homosexual is comparable to an animal – is inhumane. We cannot reduce the humanity of our fellow men and women because of how and who they love. Some animals eat their own kind, others desert their young. Shall we follow those examples, too?

Other supporters suggest that gay men sexually abuse little boys. But pedophilia and homosexuality are two very different things. There are men who abuse little girls, and women who abuse little boys, and we do not presume that they do it because they are heterosexuals. Child molestation is an ugly crime that is committed by both straight and gay adults (this is why it is a crime: children, by virtue of being non-adults, require protection and are unable to give sexual consent).

There has also been some nationalist posturing among supporters of the law. Homosexuality is ‘unafrican,’ they say, and we will not become like the west. The west is not exactly a homosexual haven; acts of discrimination against homosexuals are not uncommon in the US and Europe. But it is the idea of ‘unafricanness’ that is truly insidious. Sochukwuma was born of Igbo parents and had Igbo grandparents and Igbo great-grandparents. He was born a person who would romantically love other men. Many Nigerians know somebody like him. The boy who behaved like a girl. The girl who behaved like a boy. The effeminate man. The unusual woman. These were people we knew, people like us, born and raised on African soil. How then are they ‘unafrican?’

If anything, it is the passage of the law itself that is ‘unafrican.’ It goes against the values of tolerance and ‘live and let live’ that are part of many African cultures. (In 1970s Igboland, Area Scatter was a popular musician, a man who dressed like a woman, wore makeup, plaited his hair. We don’t know if he was gay – I think he was – but if he performed today, he could conceivably be sentenced to fourteen years in prison. For being who he is.) And it is informed not by a home-grown debate but by a cynically borrowed one: we turned on CNN and heard western countries debating ‘same sex marriage’ and we decided that we, too, would pass a law banning same sex marriage. Where, in Nigeria, whose constitution defines marriage as being between a man and a woman, has any homosexual asked for same-sex marriage?

This is an unjust law. It should be repealed. Throughout history, many inhumane laws have been passed, and have subsequently been repealed. Barack Obama, for example, would not be here today had his parents obeyed American laws that criminalized marriage between blacks and whites.
An acquaintance recently asked me, ‘if you support gays, how would you have been born?’ Of course, there were gay Nigerians when I was conceived. Gay people have existed as long as humans have existed. They have always been a small percentage of the human population. We don’t know why. What matters is this: Sochukwuma is a Nigerian and his existence is not a crime.

God will destroy the world in his own time not exclusively because of gays, but its a factor. He also chooses when to act because even Sodom wasn't destroyed until He'd sent two angels to witness and confirm their sinful tendencies. God hasn't destroyed the world regardless of black slavery and the Nazi because he wants many to repent and be saved, as has happened since then. Besides, according to the Bible, Jews are no longer God's people, since they rejected His son, Jesus Christ.

The preamble of this essay made me took a journey into the past.During my growing up days, there were some boys that were classified as "ome ka nwanyi"(a boy that behaves like a girl) and those boys grew up with the trait as they never stopped behaving like girls for the period i knew them. As kids and teenagers we played with them without any discrimination(the girls are their friends}, most of the insults they receive comes from the menfolks. My question is this: Are those boys born with girlish traits gay? I mean do they grow up having sexual relationship with their fellow men? is that their calling or the trend they must follow? do all of them end up being gay? i would be glad to have answers to these questions as it will help me to understand this broad topic and have a stand on the anti-gay law.

Don't really know what to say cos i also grew up with a boy in my neighbourhood who was nick named "onshe bi obirin" meaning he behaves like a girl.We lost contact many years back so i dont know if he ended up been gay but i can identify with what Chim says.
Now am i in support of gayism as a way of life NO
Will i be happy if a child of mine is gay,HELL NO
Irrespective of how i feel about the practise,i dont support CRIMINALIZING it simply because its not a criminal offence.
It is a moral and religious issue and should be treated as such.
Why not CRIMINALIZE marrying under aged girls and giving them VVF.Thats definetely a crime against a helpless Child.

This is a beautiful write-up. But reading the comments, i must say, a lot of nigerians are ignorant and also illiterate. I read some comments sometimes and i'm almost ashamed of being a Nigerian. With you living in Nigeria,it might be difficult to see how bad things really are. But looking at Nigeria living oversees makes me almost weep for my country. All i can do is hope and pray for a better Nigeria. If the Government spend their time on more important things, we ll definately ve less ignorant people posting negative comments on lovely write-ups. Instead of coming after me with your abusive comments abeg sit down n think about your lives. What has Nigeria done for you? What ve you done to make Nigeria a better place? I havent done much yet for my country but i'm definitely thinking of different ways i can do something positive for Nigeria. You should be doing the same too. Looking forward to a better Nigeria.

I have huge respect for Chimamanda for her previous works that I have read. For her to speak against Anti gay Law is using her good talent wrongly. Is she saying that however people feel when they are born should be taken and not corrected? Talking about the Bible, it supports marriage between a man and a woman, so if if something follows the opposite it should be corrected and not accepted into the society.
She also wrote on someone asking about humans getting married to dogs(animals), that is already happening in the Western Society.

So Ms Chimamanda, someday you will support the rights of people who are sexually attracted to animals(Zoophilia) because they have "rights".
Furthermore, that our Society has not criminalized Fornication, Adultery etc does not mean it is right. They just prevented a wild fire that is sweeping across this world of darkness from burning in Nigeria.

Chimamanda, Thank you, Dalu, Ese, Nagode. Good woman, and Linda Thank you for publishing this. That new law is a disgrace in Nigeria's history. It is barbaric. It reflects ignorance. If we wanted sexual morality, we should criminalize all intercourse outside marriage. Now we say even girls considered under age can get married, but two same-gender adults can't show affection to each other. And let me remind libbers again that many of the greatest minds that ever walked this planet manifested a gay orientation. I mention the greatest genius, Leonarda da Vinci, and Michalangelo, Tchaikovsky, Isaac Newton, the father of modern Economics John Maynard Keynes and the man who invented the system for the modern computer, Alan Turing. Chimamanda, future generations will bless you for not keeping silent in the face of this atrocity. Soyinka, bless the grand old man, has already spoken out against criminalizing gays.

I have read virtually all the comments on this blog and have seen people who support chimamanda and don’t support her. I like the fact that chimamanda is against this law, so am I, but I don’t think she’s in support of the gays and I don’t think we should be criticizing the Bible and Christians for not supporting homosexuals. Homosexuality is something that is here to stay whether we like it not, we can criminalize it all we want but its not going anywhere, just like adultery, fornication and murder still exists. The thing about this law is that everyone is at the risk of being put in jail. We all have that sochukuma friend that behaves like a girl/boy and if try to protect them and pray for them, according to this law we can spend up to 10 years or so in jail for just knowing about it. That’s what we are against not that we support homosexuals. I’m a Christian and I’m neither in support of gays nor am I in support of this law. These people exist, we may not like it, but all we can do is pray for them.

We don't knw how it started cause I do not bliv dat every homosexual out there decides such. Who doesn't want to be with a woman except someone who just can't be attracted to a woman and last I checked that's who they are. We can't judge nor condemn them for who they are cause last I checked that was God's job......... African or unafrican I believe in d freedom to live and let live......... I love chimamanda So much 😍😍 but I doubt agree with her totally. And Ya...adultery is a crime in the northern part of Nigeria So she was wrong in saying fornication isn't criminaled in Nigeria.
More So, I feel for someone like Sochukwuma but I don't believe he was born that way! At least we haven't seen real proof of people born gay there are some psychological factors that might affect the sexual orientation of a child and not merely that 'he was born gay'.

I understand that there are many illiterate close-minded Nigerians who would see the audacity of our next Nobel Laureate on the "GAY" issue as Insultive and wrong. However, what Libers should realise is that from day one, Nigerians have been divided on this issue. That's healthy for a democracy.

Those supporting the gay law should think of a situation where many of those arrested are thrown into jail, in the comfort of hardened criminals who would definitely rape and hurt these people.

I totally support the view of Madam Aduche, and vote that the law be repealed.

There are two verses in the book of Leviticus that refer to homosexual behavior. The first reads, "You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination" (18:22). While the second goes even further: "If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall be put to death; their blood is upon them" (20:13)

1 Corinthians 6:9 - Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

Romans 1:26-27: "For this reason God gave them up to degrading passions. Their women exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural, and in the same way also the men, giving up natural intercourse with women, were consumed with passion for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their own persons the due penalty for their error."
This isn't literature, this is plain English.

Such tendencies of the 5 year old may or may not be signs that he's gay. It should necessarily imply that he's gay or will be. Most children like to do role play. Just because a child or even an adult is adept at playing the role of the opposite sex doesnt imply gayism. Just as a person or comedian's ability to perfectly impersonate another person/celebrity, doesn't make them the person being impersonated. Reasoning that bedroom matters should not be criminalized may imply that domestic violence/rape and child abuse done in privacy cannot be criminalized. Remember that some spouses may be sadists/enjoy and consent to abusive treatment but it's still a crime and wrong to abuse them.

So now, because the 'intellectual' Chimamanda lends a hand to the gay movement, it has suddenly become right and a civilized thing to do?
From comments, I see a lot of people who had said so much supported the anti-gay law, suddenly realize they are 'educated' and that supporting the anti-gay law isn't a learned thing to do.
Chimamanda is a writer for God's sake and a damn good one @ that, it's her job to use her literary power to appeal to people's emotions and convince whoever isn't totally sure about their stand on this issue.
As much as l respect Adichie's personality, I'd never go down with her or any other 'mouthed' celeb, who may feel they know better on this gay issue.
It is WRONG and God TOTALLY abhors it!
Why not lets try and use our hearts and stand against what we know is wrong!

Nicely written. But it is important to correct some wrong notions. 1. Gay hasn't always been. From the beginning it was not so. God created a man and woman in the beginning. It is a distortion that came in at some point in time which shouldn't be accepted as normal. 2. It seems like all sins are sin, which is true, but there are things that nature teaches us that is out-rightly wrong (1cor11:14).In Rom1:27, the Bible talks about people leaving their natural use and performing shameless acts. Sexual feeling to the opposite sex is natural but it becomes sin in the context in which it is expressed towards the opposite sex, unlike homosexuality which is not natural. It is not the natural use for which God created the human body in whatever context. It shouldn't be accepted as normal. If it is seen as not just a sin but also as abnormal as it really is, them such people can seek help and can be helped. And as medical science seeks for the cause and solution for other human distortions so also solution will be found to correct the abnormally of homosexuality. But this can't be done if it is accepted as normal. As regards the law that has been passed,i might not agree with the terms and duration of the punishment, and i sure know that the law doesn't change a person or completely stop an act, but just makes what is legislated against more pronounced. Yet the law is necessary to keep in check the immorality that is spreading fast and becoming the trend and being accepted as normal. On a final note, homosexuality isn't normal and shouldn't be accepted as normal because it isn't. Medical science should seek the cause and find a medical solution if they can. Like someone said in an earlier post, parents should help their kids if they notice the gay tendency as the grow. But ultimately JESUS is the name that delivers and saves and He will deliver u, any gay that comes to Him, cause He love u.

The purpose of laws are to protect a society. Societies need to be protected so they can continue to exist in peace and harmony. There are certain things that degrade a society, or help that society to vanish out of existence. It's only a matter of time. Things such as adultery, fornication, stealing, etc have always been frowned upon by MOST societies and in fact there are laws against these things. Just because "everyone" seems to be breaking these laws doesn't mean the laws went away. It is a bold statement for a society to choose to rationalize and say what is wrong is right because "they" are different and we just don't understand it.

I do believe everyone needs to be loved and respected as a human being but I will not agree to excusing certain things that do not contribute to the procreation and growth of our society. Stop and think for a second. Where would we be a generation from now if most people committed adultery? Wait that already happened...and we have here on our hands the decline of family life and stability. We do however have a society we can still reform but what happens when half of our society practices homosexuality? Wait...that means we would not procreate and eventually we would no longer exist..so there you have nothing to reform.

You may be a famous writer, doctor, or politician but it will never change God's law for humanity. This is the beginning of the end of Africa. When people in a privileged position like Chiamanda decides that she'll rather let the visions and morals of the western world override her African traditions and morals. Your piece can be intellectually stimulating to some but it will never erase God's law. In fact God doesn't use the wise and intellectuals of this world. He uses the simplest and humble of heart. If you want a good analysis of this issue. I suggest you ask a poor woman in some village who fears God with all her heart. Please ask for Wisdom.

Being a gay, is who you are that's right and i'm not disputing that. The Western world wants us to follow their culture but not every of their culture could be emulated. If Nigeria was to be without a law, then every where would be in chaos. We are independent with our own laws, so laws can be made within our jurisdiction. Nigeria is a Democratic country and of course, In Democracy majority rules with their Votes. It's a social contract and laws are made for our benefits. I can't actually say Nigeria is 100pcnt democratic, But it should be noted that our customary laws, are interwoven with the general laws. Chiamanda is a good writer, I admire are but I totally disagree with what she is trying to portray.
Majority has kicked against the law, so it should be accepted. Religion could be said to be the opium of the masses, yes it is but in this case without religion, gays would not still be given a chance. Our laws are our laws, we do not want any form of imperialism because allowing gays is another penetration into our culture. We are Africans, we would always be.

Discrimination is indeed not a right way of going by this Anti-gay thing. But even as Chimamanda has written, there are factors unsaid that could be detrimental to the so called 'Majority' (According to her). Is anybody talking about Influence here? we bring up kids in our environment who would see gay activities and may choose to follow suite. It seems like all sins are sin, which is true, but there are things that nature teaches us that is out-rightly wrong (1cor11:14).In Rom1:27, the Bible talks about people leaving their natural use and performing shameless acts. Sexual feeling to the opposite sex is natural but it becomes sin in the context in which it is expressed towards the opposite sex, unlike homosexuality which is not natural. It is not the natural use for which God created the human body in whatever context. It shouldn't be accepted as normal. If it is seen as not just a sin but also as abnormal as it really is, them such people can seek help and can be helped. And as medical science seeks for the cause and solution for other human distortions so also solution will be found to correct the abnormally of homosexuality. But this can't be done if it is accepted as normal. As regards the law that has been passed,i might not agree with the terms and duration of the punishment, and i sure know that the law doesn't change a person or completely stop an act, but just makes what is legislated against more pronounced. Yet the law is necessary to keep in check the immorality that is spreading fast and becoming the trend and being accepted as normal. On a final note, homosexuality isn't normal and shouldn't be accepted as normal because it isn't. Medical science should seek the cause and find a medical solution if they can. I don't agree with Miss Adichie on her "we-don't-know-why" answer why people choose to be gay particularly her "Sochukwuma", a name, I believe, she chooses to suit her argument. Why are some people gay? She tries to answer it by siting "hormonal abnormality". Western proponents of gay say that it is based on "sexual orientation". The two answers may help us to know why people are gay. If we pick "orientation", we all know how this homosexuality has been popularized through the media, especially, pornographic films(a.k.a. blue films). Many people watch these films without knowing the main motives of being publicized. Also, the likes of Miss Adichie might not still know the main motive of publicizing homosexuality or gay until it starts actualizing its purpose. Some individuals are certainly born with various kinds of congenital diseases which sex-related hormone diseases are among them. If it's an abnormal situation, that will certainly, most times, result in the affected individual to behave abnormally. Hence, leading to the public characterizing such behaviors( e.g. homosexuality) as not just being "abhorrent" but taboo.

Also, I wonder why proponents of gay relationships in Africa like Miss Adichie have not seen it as "unjust", "unconstitutional", "ambiguous" and "strange priority" for the West, especially, the US to "criminalize" polygamy. Polygamy is also a type of "sexual orientation" which might be against human rights, and they formulated it and signatory to. Why has polygamy not gotten equal supports from the likes of Miss Adichie who supposedly grew from such "African culture"? One might be compelled to ask why Miss Adichie very pathetic about such law supported by about 99.99% of Nigerians and Africans at large? Why should she choose to trivialize the importance of the anti-gay law among black race which is minority in the world race? Miss Adichie mentions of "protection of minority" which should wisely be done by "protecting" Sochukwuma, who could have been born with sex-related hormone abnormality with anti-gay law, and consequently, preventing "Sochukwumas" from re-orienting normal individuals, as Miss Adichie is insinuating. She has to take up more serious topical issues to handle if she sees anti-gay law in Nigeria as "strange priority"

There are things we know that exist but we choose to ignore or accept it as our whim permits, but to brazenly practice and showcase it openly is a big NO! We have children that copy what they see as a way of life so what do you have to say about them being misled by that? A home now comprising man, man and children instead of man, woman and children. I am not condemning anyone born gay, far from it! But what happens to preserving humanity, upholding it in the standard we met it! The brain is very plastic. That someone liked to play with girls at age 8 does not mean he is gay. I know lots of them that have grown to become like other men, and do things other men do. However, the more we put this gay thing out there, the more people consider it as an option. Some boy who's naturally shy may start thinking he's gay when approached by another man. Whatever you feed your body/brain, it wants more of it as long as there's some reward system triggered in the brain. Let those who know they are gay and can't help it deal with it, but don't confuse people who are going through developmental challenges of life with your opinion. They don't need it. They will figure it out.

It is true that the West isn't exactly a haven for homosexuality but at the same time I think it is foolhardy and short-sighted for Chimamanda to ignore the fact that it is the ideology of Western Liberal Democracy which is behind the current proliferation of 'gay rights' movements. In more conservative traditional societies as African ones mainly are, there is little conception of gay rights. I will go as far as to say that there are no such things as universal human rights in any society, rights are based on cultural relativism. Every society has minorities which it picks on and imposes its values on. Muslim women can not wear veils in public in France for example and in the USA socialists, communists, anarchists and other left wing ideologues are seen as taboo in the mainstream polity, while they are more acceptable in Western Europe or Scandinavia for instance.

I am not saying these cultural impositions are right in principle, that is a different debate than what Chimamanda raised. However if you are realistic and practical you will know that it is unwise to pick on or single out or blame any one country for its majoritarian cultural assumptions and values particularly where they are espoused by a super duper majority of the people -98% of Nigerians currently believe homosexuality should not be tolerated according the Pew Research Centre.

Furthermore this claim that the anti-gay law is unconstitutional, I have heard it from various people who have argued with me on this subject but I am yet to see any evidence, any articles, any text of the constitution which substantiates this claim. As far as I am concerned it is only the Supreme Court of Nigeria which can determine if this is unconstitutional and as they have not done so and I doubt there is an iota of probability of the court doing so, I will keep placing my faith in our nation's independently minded top legal constitutional scholars not some western politicians and diplomats who are condemning Nigeria for this law.

Last I will concede that there is some weight in the claim that as societies develop economically and education spreads amongst a polity, general cultural assumptions may change and traditions give way for some kind of new enlightenment. After all it was the UK which imposed the anti-gay law on our legal books during colonial times (although I believe the various ethnic groups in what we call today Nigeria, did consider homosexuality a taboo before the British gave this shared cultural assumption written legal underpinning) and today the UK is one of the many developed nations in the forefront of same-sex marriage legislation. However it took the UK that long arduous process of development and education and cultural transformation to reach the stage where homosexuality was no longer criminalised. Let Nigeria go through that same phase. It will not only be ineffective but also unjustified for Nigerians to be forced to jump the gun and accept homosexuality NOW without the long-term process of development taking place.

Until that 98% becomes more enlightened and tolerant and a large chunk of that 98% becomes accepting of homosexuality which I feel could happen in the distant future, any attempt to impose homosexual rights on Nigeria NOW will be nothing short but cultural imperialism. And Chimamanda I don't want our country to undergo more arbitrary western imperialism. We already have had enough.

It is true that the West isn't exactly a haven for homosexuality but at the same time I think it is foolhardy and short-sighted for Chimamanda to ignore the fact that it is the ideology of Western Liberal Democracy which is behind the current proliferation of 'gay rights' movements. In more conservative traditional societies as African ones mainly are, there is little conception of gay rights. I will go as far as to say that there are no such things as universal human rights in any society, rights are based on cultural relativism. Every society has minorities which it picks on and imposes its values on. Muslim women can not wear veils in public in France for example and in the USA socialists, communists, anarchists and other left wing ideologues are seen as taboo in the mainstream polity, while they are more acceptable in Western Europe or Scandinavia for instance.

I am not saying these cultural impositions are right in principle, that is a different debate than what Chimamanda raised. However if you are realistic and practical you will know that it is unwise to pick on or single out or blame any one country for its majoritarian cultural assumptions and values particularly where they are espoused by a super duper majority of the people -98% of Nigerians currently believe homosexuality should not be tolerated according the Pew Research Centre.

Furthermore this claim that the anti-gay law is unconstitutional, I have heard it from various people who have argued with me on this subject but I am yet to see any evidence, any articles, any text of the constitution which substantiates this claim. As far as I am concerned it is only the Supreme Court of Nigeria which can determine if this is unconstitutional and as they have not done so and I doubt there is an iota of probability of the court doing so, I will keep placing my faith in our nation's independently minded top legal constitutional scholars not some western politicians and diplomats who are condemning Nigeria for this law.

Last I will concede that there is some weight in the claim that as societies develop economically and education spreads amongst a polity, general cultural assumptions may change and traditions give way for some kind of new enlightenment. After all it was the UK which imposed the anti-gay law on our legal books during colonial times (although I believe the various ethnic groups in what we call today Nigeria, did consider homosexuality a taboo before the British gave this shared cultural assumption written legal underpinning) and today the UK is one of the many developed nations in the forefront of same-sex marriage legislation. However it took the UK that long arduous process of development and education and cultural transformation to reach the stage where homosexuality was no longer criminalised. Let Nigeria go through that same phase. It will not only be ineffective but also unjustified for Nigerians to be forced to jump the gun and accept homosexuality NOW without that long-term process of development taking place.

Until that 98% becomes more enlightened and tolerant and a large chunk of that 98% becomes accepting of homosexuality which I feel could happen in the distant future, any attempt to impose homosexual rights on Nigeria NOW will be nothing short of cultural imperialism. And Chimamanda I don't want our country to undergo more arbitrary western imperialism. We already have had enough.

When millions around the world begin to debate the simplest, foremost and most natural function/role of men and women you then begin to have a sense of how lost the world is.

Premises:
SODOMY is in violation of NATURAL LAW (Law of God- eg- Man and woman created for each other)
NATURAL LAW is the unwritten law of God which is evident in the nature of things.

COMMON LAW AND CIVIL LAW however are man-made laws which can be flawed/polluted by men for their personal gain (eg- petty thief gets several years in jail while an influential person who inks millions of dollars does not get jail time.

NATURAL LAW supersedes COMMON AND CIVIL LAW because it is eternal and divine.

If the Nigerian government in all its imperfections has decided to pass a man-made law to enforce a natural law, one would think it should be a welcome development because they rarely get things right.

They are not homosexuals, they are SODOMITES. They may not be the worst people in the world but something is deeply wrong and unnatural about them. I have not judged them; I have merely stated what a 10 year old would have said about them 40 years ago.
However, after 40 years of subliminal programming through your schools and media, I am not surprised that many of you have been educated out of this simple truth. SODOMY IS A SIN. IT IS UNNATURAL. IT IS UNLAWFUL.

Even animals in the wild have successfully preserved the natural structure of a family. However, man and his complex brain has been deceived by his reputable professors and public intellectuals into this state of retardation.

On a sad note however, all Governments will eventually give SODOMITES their rights. Gay rights groups are bankrolled by some of the wealthiest people in the world. A few reasons why they will succeed: They can afford the best lawyers to make their case where it matters, they control the universities and your children's professors will educate them into accepting SODOMY, they control the media which floods your channels with movies/cartoons with 'good' gay characters. The most important reason is found in the Bible but some of you are atheist so I'd spare you the commentary....

So my take is this da law shld stay n if who ever decides to do their stuff,pls do it in da confines of ur home don't bring it out in da name of human rights. Very well written. Homosexuality might not be understood by many, but criminalising it is insane. If you call yourself a good christian/muslim then we must realise that gay people are created and loved by God. As the article point out. The most popular accusation levied against homosexuals is that they abuse children but this is insane and child abuse spans through all sexuality. Oh and lets not forget that the same law makers who legalised child abuse with the law allowing child marriage is now trying to take away the liberty of another vunerable group of people.

The thing i hate most about this whole gay rights thing is this - i believe practicing homosexuality is a sin and i can't judge a homo for being a homo; to each his own, but you shouldn't force me to accept it. The idea that someone would so out-rightly support and fight for gay rights, makes me sick to my stomach. Today they want to be allowed to practice their immorality, tomorrow they'll wanna adopt kids and raise them in an Ungodly environment. It is sad how far away from God and morality our generation has fallen. We have become "lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God".
A word of advice to all advocates of gay rights - do not forget God, yes God Almighty! He said he hates homosexuality. Remember that by supporting gay rights, you are saying you know better than God and you are taking a stand against him. I pray you come to your senses and return to God, He will forgive you!

Firstly, I would encourage you to learn how to write properly. Secondly, which part of the text are you considering animalistic; who is the one who is really hurting? Gay people who just leave their lives without doing any wrong to people or the government, who kills and puts this people into jail? Think thoroughly about it. Thirdly and to conclude: who do you think you are to ask God to forgive someone, when you believe in a vengeful God who punish people for living their lives. If you want people to stop being gay or acting as them, you should not dare to fornicate, commit adultery or divorce (I´m sure you have at least been involved in one of the previous). Do I support the gay law? No, it isn't perfect. There are loopholes, as there are in this article.

Do I support homosexuality? No, I certainly don't; but then, what right do I have to dictate another man's preference?

Will I be one to voice against it with a biblical excuse, when infact some girl just rode me yesterday? No. I won't be hypocritical.

We all have, in some way, subtle adherence to our religions believes; so of 'another' one the holy book(s) frowns on, should we be sent to jail for it? Okay. Let's all go to jail for fornication then; the head in the bar,the nudity, the s*x in the beach, the cinema caressing...no? Lol!

The law(s) of a land, I believe, shouldn't be based on, or that respecting, or giving preference, or biased, to the dictate of an established religion. A law, in all ways, should have a wall of separation symbolizing disinclination towards the church, the mosque, and the shrine. If they then meet at a junction, hurray! Don't look at the law passed as a bases of some religious belief. Or be judgemental like you're some demigod, and thus castigate others for not agreeing to your beliefs.

We both know it's dumb to send homosexuals to prison where homosexuality itself is rumoured dominant. It's really dumb.

I'm not gay. I'm finding myself religious wise, and I hope God directs me more.

The law to be passed should, in my view, lean to check PDAs, segregations, Electra; not cast, stigmatize and send homos to prison.

Didn't Jesus in the bible say let him with no sin be the one to throw the first stone when a woman was caught in the act of adultery. Did Jesus punish her? No! he said go your sins have been forgiven.
