Tunde
was accused of a missing 1.2million from eco bank, ladipo where he
worked sometime late last year. He was asked to refund the money amount.
According
to Tunde den someone posted d money with his system. However Tunde
made effort to repay d money, his account was put on hold and that of
his wife who works with the bank was also put on hold. (they could no
longer make withdrawals from their acct). Tunde was able to to repay
600k before d events that led to his arrest.
On
Sundayd 16th of feb, Tunde had a fire accident in his residence, his
generator exploded, leaving burns in his hands and legs. Tunde went with
d burns to the office on Monday to show his branch manager and explain d
fact that he wont be able to stay at work for the day.
On
Tuesday18th feb Tunde was on his way to clinic and some persons
ecobank called his wife to inform her that they were coming to arrest
her at her branch since d husband has absconded. She quickly placed a
call to her husband to inform him and her husband reported immediately
to work abandoning his treatment due to the threat.
Tunde
was arrested at work on Tuesday and taken to the divisional
headquarters at Ikoyi where he was locked up for 3 days. All efforts to
get his bail went futile as the police insisted that based on d
instruction of the bank, they must get the outstanding.

His
lawyer was asked to bring 1 million and he told dem bail was free and
he cant raise such. In the course of argument the police escalated d
debt to 2.4 million and the lawyer reminded them he only had an
outstanding of 600k.

Tunde
was tortured as usual by the police in the cell and on Thursday
morning his mother in-law and brother visited the station, but was again
urged by d police to quickly go and get money. They went to use the ATM
and on their way back, they saw an ambulance and wen they peeped into
it, they saw Tunde's cloths drenched in blood, his mouth foaming and it
was also discovered later that a coke bottle cover was placed in his
pocket. The police started alleging poison that he took a poisonous
coke.

Now
am wondering, poison from where? This is the story so far. We are
waiting for autopsy results but the media must be at alert... the
process must b corruption free. Eco bank and the NPF will be doing all
they can to bribe as many as possible....anyone who takes bribe on this
issue will die a miserable death in Jesus name!

You seem to have a personal beef with EcoBank. It's not Eco that killed him. It's allegedly the Police. If Ecobank has no reputation, it wouldn't be in business up to now.

After all these been said. Justice must prevail. If this is true, the culprits must be brought to book.

I sincerely hope other banks learn from this... It isn't just an ECOBANK thing... No point naming them...

Naija, hmmm!!!! Killing this guy shows some ogas @ d top(in d bank) have some skeleton in their cupboard relating to this issue, and inorder to conceal it, is to elimanate ds young man in collaboration with d police. I wish all blogger shld keep on posting ds till ds culprits are fished out.

I feel for the family & d killers (police) be brought out. However, guys a case of fraud according to d Nigeria law must be reported to the police and d duty of d police to investigate & charge d case to court. The complainant has no hand in d case bcos it is now a criminal case (fraud). Ecobank is just complying to d law of d land just like any other coy. Brutalization done to him by d police as been said is wrong, period.

hello linda,am an ex staff of ecobank n worked with tunde as far back 2009.he is a full staff and an officer so his monthly salary is sufficient.i want to use this medium to let every1 knw how ecobank operates when there is an issue, they tell u you cant fight ur boss.dia r two custodians n 2backups to d vault n atm room n dia is dual control of the keys. csms suppresses cash and all dy do is sack them.dia r cctvs, movement regs which shld be investigated. tunde alone cannot open d atm room n its always rotated so y is he d only victim?most times in ecobank dy make u admit tins u didnt do n use it against u.pple work 4 years in ecobank,dy sack dem,pay dem chicken feed cos dy r nt up to 10yrs n tk outstndn loan n put intrest knowin fully well no job out dia, no communication as to repayment n later arrest d person 4 owing d bank.ecobank does not show professionalism in everytn dy do.there is wat u call guarantor, if he was able to pay 600,000 y still detain him.who bought/gave him d coke, who visited him be4 his release?dy hv ricos dt check d atm wt dem n dia books,r dy sayn nutn was amiss all ds while or he just tuk 1.2mil n walkd out or caught on camera wt d money?ow come dy hv been balancn well wtout shortages?evry1 shld be probed.Zc, Ricos,Csms,Tellers n Atm reconciliatn team @ d headoffice.

Staff are paying with their blood in Ecobank. This is only one of the several deaths recorded frequently in that organization. Blood suckers.

I do not blame the nigerian police force in this instance. their brutality and lack of conscience is well documented and experienced by all nigerians. i blame the management of Ecobank for allowing such an outrage to occur. our group md thierry tanoh can falsify figures and hide bad loans to produce misleading profits and pay himself an outrageous bonus of over 1m dollars. when this is discovered, the entire ecobank group is in an uproar, holding emergency meeting trying to make us believe this is not true. but when a fellow colleague is accused of a 1.2 million naira fraud, he's on his own.
this is just an saddening turn of events that have shown to the world what we ecobank staff already know. and that is that those in charge do not care what happens to their employees.
in what world is 1.2m naira enough to have a man killed by law enforcement? did the rico and area manager and zc not know he'd be tortured? who cares if he committed the fraud. in our own system management has been know to do alot worse and it be covered up. poor management, lousy business decisions and a lack of respect for operators are main cause of ecobanks problems. for a bank that claims to aim at being the empolyer of choice, is this how we do businees? everyday operators put themselves at risk to manage the banks business. as ill equipped as we are and this is the welldone we get? being abadoned at a police station to be tortured for something he may or may not have done? what sort of pan african business allows this? why wasnt Tanoh arrested and tortured until proven innocent.
shame on ecobank.

I work in Ecobank and I can categorically state that ECOBANK killed Tunde Oke. This is a bank where the staffs welfare means nothing to them. Useless Directors, Jobless SM's, wicked heads of unit. Please may Tunde's soul not rest until he finds justice and may this useless Pan African Bank receive the judgment of God for making His wife a widow and the children Fatherless. I am deeply pained.

The truth is yet to be revealed in this case ,one thing i know is that, the bank and police erred in this matter, but the police carries greater blame and guilt. A point to be raised has to do with how some staff in Ecobank investigation unit treat fellow staff accused of fraud, of worthy mention are Kayode Babarimisa and Adedeji. The way these two staff of the bank treat fellow staff is actually demeaning. They go to the extent of informing police to torture accused staff until they confess, sometimes, the tortured/accused staff come out of police cell exonerated, and no form of apology or compensation is given to these staff. The bank needs to caution these two most especially.

With all due respect. I feel so sorry for the family of ds guy and all his loved ones. I read someone post that d amount is just N1.2m like that makes it right for someone to steal monies that does not belong to him. If u deal with companies especially with irregularities in a company u will find out that d average Nigerian is a thief. Every one feels they have to share from d national cake and thereby at every slightest opportunity they steal. This has to stop. We have yahoo boys every where and yet their families celebrate them. Duping people is totally wrong. We should learn to be honest in little things and then and only then can we fight corruption. May his soul rest in peace and I hope people learn to be honest cos truth is we are in a very bad system and for now everything works in favour of the rich. God help us

@Olukunle Falade: Investigative team ke. They have no brains. Its just that institutions like these believe they are untouchable. Karma has caught up with them

This is what actually happened in my case. The police insisted we all cough up the sum of the lost money in 24 hours and later relaxed to 48 hours because my bailor agreed to stand as a guarantor. I was really ashamed of the Ikoyi Police station officers because they are only interested in their 10% recovery money. Its so sad, really. Ikoyi Police station, worst police station.

Also, if truly he was handed over to d police by ecobank when the bank has liened his account and still in the employ of d bank and d sum of 600k had already been taken,it just confirms the high handedness of the bank and gross incompetence. U see the problem of the bank is that, it swallowed a bank that was way too big than it can handle, now all these revelations: the board crisis that saw the demise of the chairman, series of litigations with the laid off ex-oceanic bankers- ecobank is busy recovering the loans owed by these exstaff but not willing to pay the compulsory savings withdrawan from source from these staff accounts by their former employer, oceani bank and ecobank clamining not aware of the liabilities. whereas, those staff laid off in December 2009 where paid dat savings along with the retirement benefits. fellow Nigerians, lets not be overwhelmed with sentiments, ecobank has the obligation to safeguard patrons assets and monies.
all investigations would be done and refer to the police station for further investigations not to torture to death???? its not part of their banking code.
the whole blame should be on the nigeria police force not the bank protecting your assets with them!! audit trails in logging in at banks like in any other industry would bring forth potential individual that might be involved like we all watch in american movie CSI !!!!!

We need to boycott Punch newspaper cos it seems the police and ecobank is paying them to report this: See what Ngozi Braide has said concerning Oke Tunde's death;

"The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said, “The man was brought to the station by Ecobank around 9pm on Wednesday, that he stole N2.8m from the ATM. It was after they took their stock that they discovered he made away with the money. He admitted in his statement that he collected the money on different occasions. He begged that he did not want the matter to be taken to court.

“The following day, his parents came and promised to pay. The bank also accepted the arrangement. While they were there in the station, he requested a bottle of Pepsi and they bought it for him. He used his seat to open the drink, and did not allow anybody to open it for him. The next thing that happened was that he slumped. His father, mother and brother were all there. Everything happened in their presence. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead.”

This is a terrible lie...and there is no way this can story can fly, how can he drink a pepsi in the presence of his family members and open it with a seat, which seat? I had earlier reported in my previous post that they kept the pepsi cover in his pocket (I knew they will come up with this). No one was with him! the mother and brother came back from the atm machine and discovered an ambulance taking him away from the station.

Moreover, they claimed he admitted a 2.8 million naira fraud (the figure has now increased) how? where is the statement admitting to the fraud??? we all know that in the banking industry, it is the presiding bank official that will be held responsible for any missing money in his department. Does that mean he stole it? He was paying back money to save his job and secure his release from police custody, does that mean he admitted to stealing it? Even if he did ,why should he die for 2.8 million? is that enough to justify his death? The NPF and Ecobank should explain what he was doing in police custody for 72 hours.

We do not expect that the police and ecobank will say they are liable.... The account of the Police PRO is very typical of the kind of stories the police tell in the course of their "devilish appointment" it is unfounded and should be disregarded by the entire public.

Even if he is guilty. Is torturing him to death the solution. What of our leaders who steals.

May Ecobank fold up very fast. The killers of this young man will never see anything good.May the beasts of the field ravage their generations yet unborn.Their sons and daughters will inherit the patched places of the wilderness. The heavens above the works of their hands turns into brass today.Any police officer that had a hand in his death dies a dog's death.Whoever orders his torture and eventual murder will be reproached eternally. An incurable disease will invade all their territories. They will sow and another will eat.If the fraud was staged, whoever staged it,dies a dog's death. These I ask in Jesus' name.Amen.
