Ghana's new president is 53 year old writer and historian, John Dramani Mahama. Mahama had been the vice president before he was sworn in as president this evening following the sudden death of John Atta Mills.
NYC-1 says: He is a smart guy and speaks good English; and have just written a book called: "My coup'deta" (not too sure of the spelling). I wish him the best of luck. Ghana is a functional country. I hope Niaja vp will write a book about 'looting and allocations.'
May his soul rest in peace,This name John must be something else in Ghana because everyone seems to like the name.Even the formal president's name was John and now this new one is John.Anyways its a good Christian name.
What is it about JOHN and the Presidency in Ghana? From JOHN Jerry Rawlings to JOHN Kuffour to JOHN Atta Mills & now JOHN Dramani Mahama!!! Hmmmmmm #OKBYE
The German Immigrant says...@ anonymouss July 25, 2012 12:40 AM, yes its supposed to be that quick. In Nigeria the abundance of pageantry undermines the actual work that needs doing. Hope Nigeria is learning from countries like Ghana. I still remember how some northern "elites" tried to scheme president Goodluck out of his rightful post as president, after yar'adua died.
I hope our politicians are learning from there little neighbour? No drama! no film shoot! just smooth and easy transition. And that's the way it ought to be. Nuff said
What a sudden promotion! God puts down one to set up another.psalm 75. A lesson for everyone...be prepared at all times. Nobody knows their departure date. Make peace with God now and dnt delay.set ur priorities right. What will it profit u if u gain the whole world and lose ur soul??. Atta mills planned to come to nigeria y. Day and died y.day. He didn't see death coming at all. Hope he was at right standing wit hs maker. That's d only way he will R.I.P.
@Anon 12:40am.And why is it a bit quick?u must be one of those 15/16 year olds who have access to the internet ryt?well just make sure u take your Government studies(hope it still been taught)seriously,it would help in broadening ur knowledge instead of showing ur ignorance,it a pity. The Presidency is not supposed to be vacant for more than 48hours(in Ghana)and @ every point in time either the Prez or the Veep or the Speaker of Parliament must be in the country. Hope u have been educated,u sure needed it.Ghana just did what's constitutionally stipulated!
Linda, this is an example of beware of what you say to others because it might bounce back at you. When our President, Yar A'dua died, Ghanians were saying that we killed him. It was on their propaganda Radio Stations making fun of Nigeria and saying all sorts of rubbish. So what is happening now? Their too much wahala and insults (open criticisms) on their president killed the man. Nothing else! Ted Philips
i hope Nigeria govt can learn from ghanian govt. if it is nigeria such thing happened they would still be debating if he's still alive or not, this could go on for another 3 months while d vice president becomes redundant during dis period, as at d time of sending this msg, the vice president has taken over d mantle of office smoothly without any drama!! shame on Nigeria govt
No it was not a bit quick. It was quick and quick is how it should be. You do not leave a country without a leader for even a minute. Its unlike in Nigeria where we mourn the president for 7 days with public holiday too and then vice president is sworn in as president but every political opponent fights over it.
Quick is the way it should be. Rest assured Ghana will always remember and revere him.
Historian i really do hope he can lead the country any how sha i wish him all the best.as for atta mill dying i wonder why dey did not take him to his spiritual father for haling (just wondering oh before (L.I B readers go report me)
I wish him God,s guidance in his leadership. I hope Naija is watching and could copy if not emulate this good country Ghana.May God help Nigeria in our own rulership.
Sincere condolences to the whole Ghanaian nation, and especially to the late Honourable John Atta Mills' bereaved family. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Congratulations and good luck to the incoming president.
Anon 12:27 what do you mean speaks good english? Every well educated ghanaian who went to good ghanaian schools is very eloquent and speaks great english. Thats comes dime a dozen. No biggy
...what do you mean? How is that too quick? Oh soorrryyyy, I forgot they were supposed to drink pammy (palm wine) first and dance around the dead body for 30 days before ushering in the next president. Abegii..

That is what the constitution says, and it was rather late, no country wants to risk a coup d'etat!!
Hope Nigeria, the impotent Giant of Africa is watching!

May his soul rest in peace but life continues... Congratulations to de new presido. “Gud & bad works hand in hand”....
In Nigeria, unless the vice president is an Hausa man, there will be trouble. There will be no smooth transition.
I wish him God,s guidance in his leadership. I hope Naija is watching and could copy if not emulate this good country Ghana.May God help Nigeria in our own rulership.
Past 4 or 5 Presidents of Ghana have been called John, It must be a goodluck name :)
No time, i think i buy the idea

You lack mental capacity to comment, there is no vacuum in governance
wow, three presidents in a row...all Johns. mmmhmm
He looks good. And yes Rawlings is a john so is kuffuor, so is Mahama. Ghanaians love their Johns!
The spirit of GoodlucK Jonathan is taken over the whole of Africa. Who is the next president to die so that the VP will take over?
