Buhari reportedly rejects Rolls Royce from Nigerian Embassy in UK

President elect Buhari who left Nigeria for the UK on Friday May 22nd reportedly rejected the Rolls Royce car the Nigerian Embassy in the UK made available for him as he arrived London.

A member of his entourage who spoke with The Nation said after exchanging pleasantries with the Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK, Dr Dalhatu Tafida, the president-elect politely told them that his visit was strictly private and he had made arrangement for all his needs while in the UK.

He thanked them for the warm reception and quickly hopped into a less flamboyant car he had arranged for and drove out of the airport.
“It appeared he was uncomfortable with the number of exotic cars in the convoy. Hard as the stunned diplomats present tried to convince him, he refused to bulge, insisting that since he did not inform the Commission of his visit because it was not an official trip, hence he was not entitled to such grandeur.”the source said

This man called Buhari exudes so many things among which humility is one of em.People may not like his person, his policies may not go down well with many Nigerians and certainly alotta ox will be gored .But in this man I see restoration. At the end of his 4yrs,Nigerians will say "He CME he saw and he graciously conquered".I'm positive bout that.

Think we Nigerians are a confused lot. When government officials drive around in 20-car entourages we complain about the extravagance of it all. Now we have an elected official who just refused to, and lo and behold, we are out here flapping our gums about "fake humility". The ones that don't have the fake humility haven't done shit for us... So maybe (just maybe) we should stfu and give the one with "fake humility" some space to do his job.

Sm1 finally said smtn worth readin...riding in a big car doesn't mke u good or bad

Ogbemudia said...

But he flew first class. There's nothing wrong in riding in a Rolls Royce. So it's not right to present that as a problem or sign of humility. A Rolls Royce is simply what it is, a car. Nothing more or less. Would I buy one with hard earned money when people are suffering all around is the moral question in a social context. I personally would choose not too, Amy other least expensive car would do for me. The embassy did not ask him to buy the car they offered it to his service and since he has made private arrangements that's fair enough. I have observed diplomatic missions in Nigeria use choice cars, German consulate uses the Mercedes Benz G-Wagon and British Consulate uses the Range Rover. These are patriotic inclinations. Unfortunately, Nigeria manufactures no car and the embassy in the Uk has chosen to adopt the car model made by their host country. That in my opinion is fair as such vehicles would be put up for presidential use when the president goes visiting. The question that a cheaper car could be bought remains but then again i assume they had a budget and worked within it. Diplomatic missions are not affected by such a spend like salaries etc? Then it's fine.

Anonymous said...

But you showed him rolling in a convoy of expensive cars before, Linda. Why can't he accept the same VIP treatment in the UK?

If you've ever had any personal interaction with the man or anyone that knows him personally, this wouldn't shock you at all. He's extremely principled and way too simple a man. It's really funny how some people here are chalking this up to some kind of stunt... for shame

Marcel said...

My humble president. Change is here indeed. Unfortunately, you can never please Nigerians no matter what you do. If he had ridden the Rolls Royce, the same people criticising him here for rejecting it would have turned round to say: "see the man they say is humble, why is he riding in a Rolls?"

Unknown said...

We should be ashamed of ourselves if we castigate his position. He said he isn't there on official visit neither did he inform them that he is coming to UK. And please what is the flamboyance about. Why does our High commission parade exotic cars like a Rolls. The PM of England uses a Jaguar while the royal family use Land Rover vehicles. We keep show how shallow we are. We waste money on maintaining exotic cars when the basic things are left begging. Buhari I hail thee you have no point to prove to this sycophantic horde. Just get to work and do the needful. Godspeed My President elect

The rot in the economy isn't disturbing compared to comment like yours. The damage these PDP's politicians have done to the orientation of your likes are just unimaginable. A leader suppose to lead by example not just by talks but most importantly through his actions. This action alone will send a strong message to would-be ministers that you don't spend public funds on private visit. This is a good example that even goes beyond the instance I just gave.

The implications of accepting to use the Rolls Royce are 1. It will make his personal private visit an official one and 2. I think people need to take some minutes to think this through. GMB did not say he rejected the ride because the car is a luxurious one, he made it clear he was there on private grounds and therefore made his own personal arrangements. Logically that means he would still reject the offer even if the car had been an ordinary Toyota Carina of those days. I'm here wondering why people are making so much fuss about the issue because of the "rolls royce" in question.

Just making a big deal out of nothing, thats what happens when you are soo used to things being done the wrong way, the right way now becomes wrong/weird/funny/crazy.
