FG makes clemency plea for Nigerians sentenced to death for drug trafficking in Indonesia

The Federal government made a move yesterday March 9th to stop the execution of three Nigerians in Indonesia over their involvement in drug trafficking offenses, a crime that attracts death sentence in Indonesia. At a meeting with the Indonesian Ambassador, Harry Purwanto, in Abuja yesterday March 9th, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr Danjuma Sheni,  appealed to the Ambassador to help prevail on his government to convert the death sentences to Life imprisonment as well as expedite action on the exchange of prisoners between both countries.

"We want to appeal to you and through you to your government that this death sentence that may be carried out on Mr Salami any moment from now should be converted to life imprisonment. I am also to use this occasion your Excellency to appeal to you on the need to quickly complete the ongoing exchange of prisoners negotiations that we have with your country. We wish that this be completed on time so that our nationals who may be caught up there would have their opportunity to serve their sentences in Nigeria" he said
In his response, the Indonesian Ambassador says his country still recognizes the death penalty for drug related offenses having made it known that engaging in drug trafficking into Indonesia is risking ones life even before coming into Indonesia
"We still recognize the death penalty in our criminal justice system in some serious crimes including terrorism and Narcotics and some other things. We do apply these executions to those who are adults and we will not apply it on children or pregnant women or mentally ill persons and we have already made this known that doing this trafficking of narcotic in Indonesia is risking your death penalty before even coming into Indonesia" he said.

Not encouraging I must confess. If u go abt wit dis plea then it is like encouraging Nigerians to indulge in dis act. Afterall they wil say when we get caught our country wil plea on our behalf.

No clemency shld be given, a law is a law and must be obeyed. You can be lawless in Nigeria and get away with it. This is the same part Nigeria should take when it comes to law enforcement. Enough of lawlessness.

And the Ambassador is fully right. You knowingly enter carrying drugs into a country with death penalty for drug traffickers then you better accept the consequences of your action. The FG should let it act as a deterrent to others who might believe that government intervention will get them out of such punishment.

We will have to wait and see.

Life imprisonment is better

The federal govt can't do anything on this issuie, indonesia is not Nigeria where nothing work. It is a law that has been pass in they legislative council and seal by the higest authority in indonesia. If it Nigeria na phone call nobody go ask them y una carry drug. The same drug related offence that buhari carry out judiucously when he was military head of state. Today the same govt that is critisiin him with that is begging another country who respect their and follow rule of law. Hahahahahahhaha.

We should not be pleading for people who intentionally disobey laws and are about to be punished. I believe they deserve what they are getting and should be left alone to go through the deserved death even though i don't believe in death sentence. These guys knew the consequence of the crime and they went for it.

The worst part is what they make those of us that are innocent to go through because of their crazy behaviour.

Nice move. Long expected. PDP is really under fire, wanting to impress Nigerians. I love APC for nothing but the challenge.

Wish this kind of move will continue and pursued till result is achieved. Many Nigerians in diaspora are not finding it easy at all.

I also wish that we have enabling environment for our youths to develop themselves here instead of involving in one crime or the other in a bid to make ends meat outside the shores of our great nation. God help us.

Linda, you don't publish my comments why?
