CBN devalues Naira, puts exchange rate at N168 to a dollar

Following the dwindling oil price in international market, the Central Bank of Nigeria today announced the devaluation of the Naira, pegging the Dollar to Naira exchange rate at N168 to a dollar as against the N155 it was previously.

Announcing the new exchange rate at the apex bank's Monetary Policy Committee meeting in Abuja, the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele said the devaluation of the Naira against the dollar is to strengthen the Nigerian currency in the face of the falling international oil price. He called on the Federal government and the National Assembly to speed up the process towards the immediate passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill, PIB, which has been pending passage for the past two years.

Jesus, the economy keeps getting worst. "Strengthing the naira currency" is a big lie to tell the public, obviously the Naira is getting worst and no recognized in the international market like before when the value is same as pounds, dollars and U can spend Naira in other countries. But not anymore and it keeps falling. This is due to what our government has caused. They loan our banks and still get loan from the same money they loan to our banks. This is why our economy is not growing. So much has been hidden only the Rich get richer and the poor getting worst. What a pity. I weep for this country

this is so sad, how can you call this strengthening the currency when you devaluing it. this is just for selfish reasons and maybe for the election because drop in oil price means less money for these politicians.

Didn't hear of UAE devaluing the Dirham because of drop in oil price. well feel so sorry for Nigerians

A stringent and quite a tough monetary policy measure necessary to cushion the effect of hazardous effect of a mono-economic nation like ours. PIB bill…..now that is quite another story, I recall a conference i attended a about 6weeks ago where the chairman, house comittee, downstream sector (oil and gas) assured us all that infact as at the time he was delivering his speech, the PIB was to be passed within the next 48hours…… but that was 6weeks back. oh! I know why we are still waiting, they needed to pass their 'fence- Jumping 'courses first so……

This is disheartening, it would av made a lot of sense if we don't rely much on imports, now importers will suffer and inflation rate will increase and d average nigerians will pay d price. I hope God gives us a leader that will show us mercy in 2015......this ones don't care imao. #only1solace

We are heading backward. Must we have devaluation of naira before we can able to face the falling in international oil price. I wonder...

Before this not so strange announcement, I got $1 = #176 from moneygram 2 days ago. So therefore this announcement might make us get up to 200 naira for 1 dollar even without allowing people to receive dollar anymore for black market rate.
My Nigeria go better 1day.

what it sells at the black market is usually a lot higher than what it actually is. the Naira is so useless. it's almost 280 naira to a pound so imagine what they will be selling it for on the black market. we cant continue like this.

Unknown said...

Exchange rate is N176 to a dollar now! I don't know what these country is turning into.

Anonymous said...

check exchange rate before you post.

Anonymous said...

Is this decline in exchange rate due to dwindling oil prices or due to an upward surge of dollars to finance the 2015 elections? Pls clarify

Anonymous said...

Expect that to become N190/ $1 within a week

God punish these bastards! Oil price dropped and they devalued naira so that the common man can suffer; what happened to the excess crude oil money? And why this overtly dependence on oil? God punish Jonathan, Okonjo-Iwala, Emelife, Diezani and all their satanic allies.

As of today on international market, a dollar is 176.30 naira! But if you are buying dollars, you will pay more, so 180 is a fair price
