Presidential fleet larger than three domestic airlines - report

Found this very interesting report on Punchng.com. According to the report, the Presidential Air Fleet has more aircraft that three domestic airlines combined! SMH! Read below...
The declining fortunes of the domestic airlines have made President Goodluck Jonathan’s 10-aircraft Presidential Air Fleet larger than the fleets of three domestic airlines combined, investigations by Punch correspondent revealed on Tuesday.
The three carriers are Chanchangi, MedView, and FirstNation airlines. Chanchangi has one aircraft; Medview Airlines, three; while FirstNation has  two.
IRS Airlines, with five aircraft in its fleet, has only one that is currently operational. The four others have been sent overseas for routine maintenance for a long time now.
It can be technically assumed that the Presidential Air Fleet is bigger than the four domestic airlines, according to industry experts.
Aerocontractors, the second largest domestic airline, which currently has about 12 aircraft in its fleet, is struggling under sundry debts like every other domestic airline.

Indications have also emerged that the 10-aircraft PAF may emerge the second largest domestic airline in the country after Arik Air, which currently has about 23 aircraft.

Aviation sources revealed, however, that unless the plan to turn Aerocontractors Airlines into a national carrier worked out, the declining fortunes of the debt-ridden airline might force it to lose some of its planes to foreign aircraft leasing companies as it happened to Air Nigeria some years ago.

Top aviation officials admitted that the large size of the PAF could not be justified amid the dearth of aircraft among the domestic airlines, which lack adequate finance to buy more planes to meet up with the soaring passenger capacity.

Apart from Arik and Aerocontractors, each of the remaining domestic airlines does not possess half of the number of aircraft in the PAF, according to findings by our correspondent.

IRS Airlines has only one operational aircraft in its fleet; while Dana Air has five aircraft, in addition to those owned by Chanchangi, Medview and FirstNation, according to figures obtained from the industry.

According to findings, the PAF include two Falcon 7X jets, two Falcon 900 jets, a Gulfstream 550, one Boeing 737 BBJ (Nigerian Air Force 001 or Eagle One), and a Gulfstream IVSP.

Others are one Gulfstream V, Cessna Citation 2 aircraft and Hawker Siddley 125-800 jet.
Each of the Falcon 7X jets was purchased in 2010 at a cost of $51.1m, while the Gulfstream 550 costs $53.3m.

The factory price of the other aircraft in the fleet could not be obtained online. However, airline CEOs put the average price of the Falcon 900 at $35m; Gulfstream IVSP, $40m; Gulfstream V, $45m; Boeing 737 BBJ, $58m; Cessna Citation, $7m; and Hawker Siddley 125-800, $15m.
This brings a combined estimated value of the PAF to $390.5m (N60.53bn).

Nigeria happens to be one of the few countries in the world with a large PAF.

Most major countries in Europe and Asia maintain two aircraft in their PAF, according to Wikipedia.
According to the online portal, Japan maintains only two Boeing 747-400 planes in its PAF.
The two aircraft, mostly for the prime minister, the emperor and his wife, and other members of the Imperial Family, is operated by the Japan Air Self-Defence Force.

The aircraft were constructed at the Boeing factory at the same time as the United States’ Air Force One. Both Japanese aircraft were delivered in 1990.

Wikipedia also states that the Netherlands government operates only two aircraft, a Fokker 70 and Gulfstream IV to transport the Dutch Royal family and government officials such as the prime minister and other ministers.

They are also used for international conferences and for private trips by the Queen and the Prince of Orange. For long haul trips, the Royal Dutch Airline is used. Often the upper deck of a Boeing 747 is used.

The Queen of England and the Prime Minister, David Cameron, often go on British Airways chartered flights for long trips. Cameron was recently criticised by the UK media for chartering a foreign plane instead of a British.

According to Wikipedia, the Royal Squadron of the Royal Air Force maintains a fleet of Agusta A109 helicopters, BAE-125 mid-sized business jet and BAE-146 regional airliner to support short travel by the Royal Family, the Prime Minister and senior members of the British Government.

Countries like Ghana, Algeria and a host of others in Europe maintain only one aircraft in their PAF.
According to industry experts, airlines spend between 15 and 20 per cent of the cost of an aircraft on its operation yearly. They say that averagely, a little less than one-fifth of the cost of the plane is spent every year on insurance, flight and cabin crew, maintenance, fuelling, catering and training.

Going by the fact that at least 15 per cent of this amount is spent annually on operating the PAF, it means about $58.57m (N9.08bn ) is being spent annually on running the planes in the Nigerian PAF.
Some airline CEOs, who pleaded anonymity, had raised concerns over the economic sense behind the large mix of brands of aircraft in the PAF. They said although the fleet size was large, the cost of operation would have been cheaper if the Presidency had maintained only two brands.

According to the Nigerian Air Force’s website, the PAF’s current staff strength consists of 47 NAF officers, 173 airmen/airwomen and 96 technical and administrative civilians.

“The operational headquarters of the Fleet is located at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, while the administrative personnel are at the Federal Secretariat. The fleet has a liaison office at the Presidential Villa. Flight operations, training, aircraft maintenance and general running of the fleet are funded by the Presidency,” according to the website.

The dirigisme system in Nigeria has made the corrupt leaders richer and richer, instead of our leaders to practise altruism and altruistically govern they hold on to egoism, our leaders are bloody set of egoists!
Utilitarianism is what we need in this country if the common man is to have his needs met, and meritocracy needs to be applied in choosing those who lead key sectors in this country, but nepotism has become the order of the day! If things don't get better for the common man then nihilism would become the order of the day, and when a country's populace become nihilistic you know that nation is heading for doom!

I don't think there's anything wrong in having a larger presidential fleet. What is wrong is that the aviation industry is in shambles. If the industry was functioning properly nobody will care about the PAF. Didn't Ibrahim Abacha and co die in a Presidential jet? (even though they said it was a bomb.)

We need to stop comparing a country like Nigeria to the Western world. The comparison has no effect. Comparing a nation that works to a nation that doesn't work is a waste of time. British Airways is a "world" airline known for its standards and safety. Plus these people are patriotic. Nigerian leaders aren't. They now want to buy aero off the Ibrus and take it for themselves but hide and say it's a national airline? God is watching.

Apparently, the GEJ administration is more corrupt than I thought.
Such lavish lifestyle should be left for Russian Oligarchs ,Arabian Sheiks,Billionaire businessmen and what have you,not for a ploitician. Especually if he happens to be from a country where a large number of the general populace still live in abject poverty.
This clearly explains why becoming president in Nigeria will always be a do or die affair, there's a lot if money to siphon and loot without Nigerians even knowing.
Nigeria,would it ever get better?

Can there ever be a wrong time to do the right thing? Of course not. There is only a right time to do the right thing and that right time is always right now. Each of us possess a clear sense of right and wrong. Even as small children, we quickly learned what we should and shouldn't do.
So why should you or I waste another moment doing the wrong things when there are so many right things that need to be done right now? Isn't it about time that each of us redirected our energy and effort on doing as much good for as many people as we possibly can? I believe has Nigerians we need attitudinal change but how can we change when our president will never comment on any pressing national issue, how can we change when our president is neither here nor there, he is confused and so we are confused too.
However, its high time we wake up from our slumber and try to do it right. we ’re a born winners and as winners, we must readily accept and embrace the immense responsibility that comes with the territory. Winners are always ready, willing and able to do the right thing whenever and wherever it needs to be done. You need to be prepared to do your part too.

And right now is as good a time as any to get started.

My fellow LiBERs, Codebaters, Accurate time keeper and Nigerians, i hope i have convince and not confuse you that Nigeria needs to try her luck with another president, either from south, west, east or north, PDP1 or PDP2. Thank You

Which way Nigeria?

Why will Only 1 man control 10 Presidential Aircraft fleet valued @ N60.53bn.

Money to maintain this 10 aircrafts annually is worth paying of debt FG is owing ASUU.
Our Universities has been on strike for Four Months now, there's no successful output/response with all the meeting held between ASUU and FG.
Nothing is done to improve our Education system in Nigeria, its degrading everyday due to strikes and other issues,
when will our fellow citizens (students) not study in neighbouring countries like Ghana, Benin Republic, Togo, and the rest....... Upon all that you struggle to scale through the four school walls you discover that you waste one year on compulsory youth service to your father land of which FG deceive you with allowance of #19,800.After awarding you with NYSC certificate you will be left on your own to search for work which exist nowhere.
When will the country improve when education system is nothing to write home about,
when there's no employment for graduates,
when the citizens re lamenting and complaining of poor roads, unstable power supply,
When majority of the citizen can't feed properly, can't afford 3 square meal ( 60% of Nigerian re living on $1 a day)
The list is countless..........
I see corruption everywhere, we can't fold our arms and keep on watching our wicked leaders squander us of all the resources that's supposedly shared among us. Our so called leaders re so greedy, selfish and self centered, infact they possess madness of the highest order all in name of Democrazy.

When president in other countries has maximum of Two aircrafts and others re majorly one, infact few presidents ve to charter planes whenever they want to travel for there official assignment .
Is it not daft and foolish to waste our resources lavishly?

President Goodluck Jonathan’s 10-aircraft Presidential Air Fleet is larger than the fleets of three domestic airlines in Nigeria combined all together, as investigated by Punch correspondent on Tuesday.

The average American could buy a house for the amount of money it takes to run Air Force One every hour.

The U.S. military has provided an updated estimate on that cost, first published by a taxpayer watchdog group and confirmed by FoxNews.com, and the number is staggering -- $181,757 per hour. That's the price tag for shuttling around President Obama, who, as it turns out, has spent more days abroad in his first two years than any other president.

Estimates over the years based on government reports and independent number-crunching have always reflected a steep cost for presidential travel, but the figure provided by the 89th Airlift Wing appears to be far higher than any previously reported. It was first published in a report this week on presidential travel by the National Taxpayers Union Foundation.

"It's astonishing. It's far higher than any other ... figure that's been reported on. It's very surprising, and of course it's just a fraction of the overall cost involved with presidential travel," said policy analyst Demian Brady, who wrote the study.

Master Sgt. Jeff Capenos, with the 89th Airlift Wing, told FoxNews.com the figure reflects operating costs ranging from fuel to engine and aircraft maintenance. Asked why other public estimates, which typically did not exceed $100,000, were so much lower, he said: "They were probably inaccurate."

The National Taxpayers Union referred to the publication of the statistic as a "major coup for public disclosure." Brady said the high price tag, as compared with prior estimates, could be attributed not just to inflation, but a better and more specific accounting of the associated costs, as well as upgrades made to the aircraft. He urged the administration to be even more forthcoming with presidential travel costs.

Brady also used his report in part to tackle rumors about the cost of Obama's 10-day post-election tour through Asia. One Indian newspaper report quoted an anonymous local official claiming it would cost U.S. taxpayers $200 million every day, a figure Brady dismissed as "wildly exaggerated." The Obama administration also shot down that figure, without detailing the actual cost.

But the trip to India, Indonesia, South Korea and Japan was by no means cheap. While a total by-the-day figure may be impossible to come by, Brady estimated that the 48 hours of flight time logged on the trip would cost at least $8.7 million for Air Force One alone. The president's latest visit to Lisbon, Portugal, for a NATO conference would add another $2.7 million, he figured.

That Lisbon trip also set a record for Obama. By Brady's accounting, Obama has now logged 55 days overseas, surpassing former President George H.W. Bush's record of 54 days during his first two years. In total, Obama has visited 26 countries -- some of them more than once -- over the course of 15 trips.

Having been in office only two years, Obama has not come anywhere close to the overall record for presidential travel. That was set by former President Bill Clinton over the course of his two terms in office. Clinton logged 233 days abroad over the course of 55 trips. Former President George W. Bush comes in at a close second, with 215 days abroad over the course of 49 trips.
