Buhari speaks on MTN fine, says the telecommunications inaction contributed to high Boko Haram casualties

President Buhari today made his first public statement about the N780 million fine the National Communications Commission NCC, slammed on MTN over the failure to deactivate 5.1 million unregistered sim cards. Speaking at a joint press conference with visiting South African president Jacob Zuma, Buhari said the slow registration of Nigerians on the MTN network led to the death of many Nigerians during Boko Haram attacks. He said many terrorist now use unregistered lines ..

“This is the first time I will be personally as a president making a public comment about it. The concern of the federal government is basically on the security and not the fine imposed on MTN. You know how the unregistered GSM are being used by terrorists. And between 2009 and today, at least 10,000 Nigerians were killed by Boko Haram. That was why NCC asked MTN, Glo and the rest of them to register GSM. Unfortunately, MTN was very, very slow and contributed to the casualties”he said

Dis network dat is rich but act lik its poor. Treat Nigeria worker's lik second class citizens.

This is clearly a case of giving a dog a bad name to hang it.

The reason why we had high Boko Haram casualties is because the military was not well equipped to fight terrorism.

In Iraq, Syria, etc terrorists still use phones to communicate. Do they fine the telecoms companies because of that?

Ah ah! Mr President should chill jare...

Unknown said...

Okay ooooo

Anonymous said...

There should be no more reductions in the fine to avoid making a mockery of our regulatory mechanism. The negotiations should rather be on instalmental payments timeline. And mtn cannot try such mess even in corrupt south africa. Its time to sanitize the telecoms sector

I think mr president was misinformed on this issue or he is just too ignorant to check on facts before making a statement on a very sensitive issues like this one. The facts of this matter was that all telecoms companies were directed to shut down operations in the NE area i.e Borno, Yobe n Adamawa for months even before state of emergency was declared and after. These terrorist couldn't have used GSM for calls. Why is Nigerian govt relying solely on the sim reg done by operators when the last senate approved billions of Naira for NCC to do a parallel exercise and nobody is asking both the Senate and even NCC to give an account of d funds. Now our incompetent president is not even ashamed to say that the security of lives is in the hands of privates operators who are in biz to make profit. Let us be wise people!

May God forgive you for that statement you made. You think it'd ok to come on social media and say whatever you feel like saying. Say whatever you want to say but don't insult God. Just in case you don't know, Allah also means God

Most Nigerians on this blog especially the Igbos are bastards. This is a case of our country against SA. Instead of them to support the decision of the government so that they dont take us for a ride, they are busy supporting MTN owned by South Africa just because of political party sentiments Just because their party lost election. Glo wanted to enter SA but SA refused because they said they dont want a Nigerian company to dorminate telecoms companies in SA but their South African company, MTN is the biggest company in Nigeria today and Nigeria allowed them when they wanted to set up their company in Nigeria. Also Shoprite owned by SA is the biggest supermarket in Nigeria just like DSTV too. They all dominate other companies owned by Nigeria. When will we learn to come together as one and stop all these tribal and party sentiments? If you like support Xenophobia just because Buhari is against it and because u dont like Buhari. You people are bufoons and the biggest fools on planet earth. I weep for Nigeria!!!

I just read some comments and realised that there are many illiterates that do not understand English on this blog. If your sim is not registered, there is no way they can track down boko haram movements. The federal government and millitary intelligence together with the SSS were working with telecoms companies in Nigeria to trace the movement and activities of boko haram. This was why all telecoms were told to register all sims or disconnect the lines that are not registered and you are here supporting MTN for not complying, a foreign company for that matter just because u dont want to support the present government. The federal government did not want the public to know the reason at that time because boko haram might start using foreign roamed numbers if they knew. It is because your relatives are not among those killed by boko haram that is why you are here blabbing rubbish and reasoning with your dirty anus instead of with your brain. Stupid wailing bigots!

I like this Buhari. He is very outspoken and bold. South Africa should go and sit down. How many of Nigerian companies are in South Africa? The small retail shops owned by Nigerians in South Africa have all been looted and destroyed by Xenophobia. South Africa will never allow us establish a big company like MTN in their country. Buhari dont agree. They must pay. They have ripped us off too much even with DSTV subscription.

Anonymous said...

So boko haram had an upper hand because of this company called MTN? Pls they should pay more because of the lives lost.

So you are in business to make profit at the expense of lives lost by boko haram attacks. Hear yourself speak. Dont you think you sound stupid?

Sam said...

Anon 5:39PM you are the one who is incompetent and silly. Boko haram is all over the North not just North East alone. They can make GSM calls in other states in the North and then go back to North East to carry out their attacks. Is Kano in North East? Have they not bombed Kano several times? Have they not bomed Kaduna? Have they not bombed Jos. Abeg collect sense! Ode, Ewu.

Anon. 5:39PM boko haram can make GSM calls in Cameroun and Chad and then enter North East and carry out their suicide bombing. Are you trying to say that boko haram do not make GSM calls at all? You will be very foolish to think so. So how do they upload videos on Utube and release to us? Is it not through GSM, data technology? Pls comment wisely and be sure of facts before insulting an innocent intelligent president that is trying to make things right.

@Anonymous 3:40PM read the post and digest and understand it very well before you comment senselessly. Buhari is not saying they should not use phones. He is saying they should use registered phones that can be traced and tracked so that boko haram can be tracked down easily. MTN did not comply because MTN had a lot of sims not registered that cannot be traced or tracked. Pls comment sensibly next time.

Fine the military was not well equipped. But was that the only factor? Many other factors contributed to boko haram casualties like unregistered sims, insecurity etc. It is because of high insecurity that teenage girls were being abducted for suicide bombings easily. Also, because of unregistered sims, we could not trace or track down phone calls of boko haram. All these factors put together made boko haram have an upper hand.

How long will this government keep blaming others and just do something. The lip service is more than the actual work. How do you come out to say something that you never proved, because MTN is the largest and therefore have most unregistered numbers it is automatic to assume that the terrorists use MTN lines. Very sad, going by that system, we might as well say every black criminal around the world is Nigerian afterall we are the most populous black nation.
