UCH Ibadan performs first open heart surgery

feat: The surgical team that performed the feat at University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan.
The first open heart surgery in a teaching hospital in Nigeria has been successfully carried out at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, Oyo State.

The feat was carried out by surgeons at the UCH in conjunction with a team of surgeons from Tri-State Cardiovascular Delaware, USA. (The surgical team that performed the feat pictured above)

A statement by the institution’s Head of Information Unit, Mr. Toye Akinrinola, disclosed that the four-hour surgery was to correct a leaking heart valve in a 19-year-old secondary school leaver.

An elated Chief Medical Director of the UCH, Professor Temitope Alonge, noted that the UCH was moved to embark on the exercise as a way of alleviating the hardship being experienced by Nigerians with heart-related challenges.

He stated that as the first teaching hospital in Nigeria, the UCH should take the lead in critical areas of medicine, propelling it into ensuring that complex surgeries (like open heart surgery) were carried out in the hospital.

“We are the pioneer teaching hospital in Nigeria, and we should be taking the lead. We are going to do this and we intend to make it a continuous exercise.

“In fact, within the next six months, we intend carrying out not less than 30 heart-related surgeries and at affordable cost to Nigerians.”

Alonge, who lamented that Nigerians pay exorbitantly to undergo such procedures outside the country, pointing out that the cheapest rate outside Nigeria was about N2.5 million.

“This is outside the airfare and hotel bills. It will run into millions. But with us here, it will be a lot cheaper and the access is there. The first surgery is heavily subsidised as a way of encouraging Nigerians to have confidence in our healthcare system.”

Alonge stated that the Federal Government had given the UCH a mandate to improve on the training of doctors as a way of enhancing more access to adequate healthcare in Nigeria.

Leader of the doctors from the USA, Dr. Kamar Adeleke noted that the patient would be back to his normal activities in less than two months.

“He does not have anything to fear about life expectancy. He will soon resume his normal activities, and do all the things he was used to before he took ill,” Dr. Adeleke said.

Adeleke gave assurance of his continued support to providing access to adequate healthcare as obtained in other developed countries.

After more than a decade of of inactivity, open heart surgery resumed in the country at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Enugu, at an average cost of N500, 000.

Presently, UNTH has started open heart surgeries at the new site. In june this year the. Hospital carried out 5 successful open heart surgeries. UNTH is the center for cardiothoracic excellence in Nigeria. Google is your friend in case

This man that calls himself the CMD, Professor Alonge is owing resident doctors update course fees for over 2 years and the new Resident doctors he hired have not been paid in the last 4 months with the money in his fixed account. So much for hiring American Doctors to carry out one surgery and go back during a doctors strike. Who is a FOOL?

well it's a good development if only our selfish, self center government can give 100% support in acquiring necessary machines to all teaching hospital in nigeria instead of restricting it to jst two hospitals, meanwhile it's not about the money dis time but about giving the very bst service to victims.

Anonymous said...

You guys are missing the point. When I read the heading of this article I was elated. Only to read further and notice that doctors from the U.S were actually involved. Please how is this a feat? I expected this headline to be about a Nigerian Surge on performing this task. I am not impressed. We need the necessary equipments and facilities to enable proper training of residents and certified surgeons alike. The health care system in Nigeria is below standard and it needs to be completely overhauled. The Chief medical director Prof Temitope Alonge is already talking about having not less than 30 heart surgeries within the next year. Will he also invite the U.S doctors for all the procedures?? SHAME!!!

Anonymous said...

linda post my comment plssss. We are tired of staying @home, tired of producing poor engineers, quack Dr. Heee! UCH wants to aclaim d kudos dat a succesfull heart surgery ws caried out in dia hospital by an imported Dr?. huh? Y nt by a Nigerian Dr. Imagine d facts. Nigerian govt. Plssss come 2our aid nd serve d future of d youths of dis Nation... We are d leaders of tomoro buh.. Dats if d past leaders will agree 2step down 4us 2lead... God have mercy.

Anonymous said...

Regardless we are still very backward, so a dying patient has to be flown to Ibadan just to be treated? Ridiculous !

Anonymous said...

Nonsense..they did my mums heart sugery july 16th 2013 at the same UCH with the same so called soecialist from USA and she died august 9. .she was 56.. They did for 10 people and 8 of them died..so i head but i know i dont have my mum again..

The title of the article is misleading as it's not the first in UCH because such was done in the same hospital over 10years ago.

Please get your fact right 8 people did not die. It's misleading to come online and say that. Sorry about your loss may your mum RIP
