Major oil companies in Nigeria have said they are planning a mass sack following the dwindling price of oil in the International market. At a meeting between the Minister of Labor and Productivity, Chris Ngige and the managements of International Oil Compananies (IOCs) in Nigeria comprising of Agip, Mobil producing, Chevron Addax and Total, the Head of Human Resources and Medical, Chevron Nigeria Limited, Ihuoma Onyearughe, said the plan to lay off some workers in the sector is as a result of the current challenges facing the industry.
“The issue of laying people off is not a decision that comes lightly. I will not come here to tell you that people are being laid off or not. The situation in the oil company is dire. We want to ask for more understanding in appreciation of the challenges we face” she said.
According to Tribune, during the meeting, Chris Ngige appealed to the oil marketers and companies not to lay off people as Nigeria is facing a lot of social security problems and could not to afford more problems through job cuts
“The oil majors in Nigeria must therefore bend backwards and see what they can plough back from their profits to keep Nigerian workers on their duty posts. Keep the existing jobs. We have a downturn today but you can be sure it will not last forever. If you are not creating new jobs, let us keep the ones we have. That is what this government is pleading and we must emphasise that is what we want.”he said.

Nonsense, the oil companies are operating at a loss at the moment.
Diversify the economy - develop the MANUFACTURING sector (aviation, electronics, furniture etc), mechanised agriculture, tourism (like Dubai, a city in an oil producing nation as well),
transportation...the list is endless!
Oil once sold at > $100.00 per barrel, why did NGR not boost her external oil reserve???
Norway has over $700 mil in external crude oil account, so the nation can cruise on for another decade even...in the face of low oil price and Statoil is laying off as well.
It is a sorry situation but no business man wants to operate at a loss!

The Nigerian Government does not know where it's powers lie. Take Angola for instance, before a native can be laid off, all the foreigners will have to leave the country first. There is no reason to have expats residing and lounging in Nigeria when you are laying of the Nigerian part of the workforce.
The oil industry is one of the major employers of labour in Nigeria. The Nigerian govt can for once enforce it's own laws and stop issuance/renewal of work visas for anyone coming to work in the oil industry in Nigeria atleast for now that the companies have no budget to invest in new wells. We have capacity here to manage our fields. They can also bar foreigners of a certain age from working offshore in Nigeria, do that together with a freeze on work visas and you won't have to go 'begging' them not to retrench workers.
Take a cue from Angola and enact and enforce Nigerian friendly labour laws, you won't have to ever go cap in hand.

i dont understand our politicians, this companies do have their own funding issues and they are trying to cut cost. NASS is spending Billions to buys new cars and yet they dont want the govt to sack. well they should think of a tax holiday for a couple of years then we can start talking else make them go sleep. this issues is a global issues and govt need to look inwardly on how to create more jobs outside the oil sector.
I only pray for God's intervention before the condition of Nigeria gets out of hand

It's not there fault that the oil price has nosedived so rapidly that most oil companies and oil servicing companies are laying off workers home and abroad. This is the reason why everyone is suggesting that Nigeria should diversify and increase her export potentials to create jobs and increase the GDP and foreign reserves. This oil price decline is affecting the global financial economy which Nigeria is not an exemption. It's a shame that we import most things that we can produce locally, toothpicks, rice, and even clothes. Places like Aba should be developed properly to assist the fashion industry. "They say, charity begins at home", but ours begin abroad!!! Nigeria is the hub to the African Economy, and yet we are import driven. We must re-focus on Agriculture and the manufacturing industries to close the widening gap of these economic depression and inflation that is gradually grounding the country to a halt. A stitch in time they say saves nine.
Well said Alysyn. The oil companies should also plough back a little of their profit as a corporate responsibility so as to keep the jobs going. They have profited enough. Time to give back.

Oga....all those things u mentioned are in the budget & are things that wont happen overnight..they are long term projects...those sectors were virtually dead befr now.....Norway is one of the happiest nations in the world- for obvious reasons ,we are not & it will take time...

Dwindling worldwide oil price isnt an issue with nija leaders...it is the corruption in which funds made when price was high in the past that is our major problem..

I appreciate your suggestion. However in most cases the govt signs an agreement with the ioc's taking huge percentages of their profit in royalties and taxes etc. Now the IOC's won't have any option other than laying staff off because the govt is already taking too much. It's a messed up process
