House of Reps want Sept 22 schools' resumption date changed

The House of Representatives want the September 22nd school resumption date for private and public primary/secondary changed.

According to Punch, the Reps explained yesterday that it had directed its Committee on Education to take “another look” at the date in view of the fact that the outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease in the country had yet to be fully contained.
The Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Victor Ogene, who conveyed the position of the House in Abuja, said there was still apprehension among parents and guardians over the Federal Government’s decision to change the earlier resumption date of October 13 to September 22. Continue...
Ogene said the leadership of the House was concerned over the fresh protests by the public, especially parents and guardians.
He noted that considering the fact that some persons were still under surveillance, the House felt it had the responsibility to ensure the safety of children.
The lawmaker said the committee would come up with recommendations on the appropriate and safe date to re-open the schools.
He added that on September 8, a group, Africa Health, Human and Social Development Information Service, had advised against the re-opening of the schools.
The group had warned that re-opening schools now could put the lives of over 80 million school children and teachers at risk.

I support o. Please let's curb this ebola once and for all. If it ever gets into school. It'll become an epidemic. And u know children, especially in schools their hygiene is zero. So please. I support o. Let this EVD go before schools open. They should even include universities

I think the issue of Ebola is still at a very critical state and we have to be cautious of the actions we take at this point. For me as a parent, i think the September 22nd date is a bit too early for schools to resume. I know there are a lot of people out there with selfish interest but please don't put our children at risk.

The stupid Minister of Education and his Private school owners should have first consulted widely with the real stakeholders like NMA, HOUSE OF REPS, pta's etc before hurridly changing the date back to sept haba it's only common sense now. The lives of our kids should not be toyed with on the platter of money abeg. I agree with the NMA and Hose of Reps the date should be extended until at least the 21 days window of those under surveillance elapses so that we r sure that no new cases come up and it will give the schools more time to equip and train staff

Anonymous said...

These rep don't want children go school like them?

VERY SENSIBLE!!!

Ebola is still round the corner
I believe more time should be given, but 1st I hope FG didn't fold their hand on Ebola issue

what our leaders surpose to do they neva did it.1.they should close our borders.2.do test for those coming in through the airport.3.provide hand sanitizers for all schools even if they will buy on their own also each student or pupil should have a termometer for testing them at d gate of d school.a child wit a rise in temperature should go home immediatly.we said there is falling standard in education still we want to lose a whole term.also the teaching and non teaching staff and the owner of a school all of them will surffer together wit their family multiply in the number of privte school in nigeria, think about it if it will not increase the numbers of crime in our nation.pls our goverment dont let the masses suffer u can find another means of stopping ebola if not this children will be picking pocket and some will forced to prostitute at a tender age just for a lof of bread if their parents cant give them three square meals.an idile hand is an instrument of the devil.our leaders find another way

Olubukola Ozone said...

I understand thr point, but for how long wil dey kip shifting d date? Ebola is fast losing its containment and is spreding. I think our children might just be at home longer dan usual if dey kip shiftin it like dat

Very stupid debate, the school children can only be taught d EBOLA facts in school not @ home. Pls they should look for better measures to curtail d virus. May be the house of rep didn't see any other national importance ravaging the country.

The have to reopen the school becos in my schl in ibeju lekki pupils in my class are onehuundred n five as last year promotion exam.so tell me how cope wit them wit a teacher wit them. And they are nt ready to employ teacher n divide the class.

All this because GEJ baby mama owns a big private school in Abuja and Private school owners choose to overlook the lives of our children just to make money! anyway their plans will definitely fail!!!!!!!!!!! God wont allow it and until i am sure, my kids aint going to any school! ignorant people and school owners can rant all they want na dem sabi

Please move it o!!!! My child's school fees cannot be completed by september 22 o!!!! Please o!!!! Buy me more time. But seriously, i tried stopping my wife from sending my kid to summer lesson because of ebola but she refused, was so happy when government gave directive to close all schools.

Those children are they not mingling with their pals in churches, market places, streets, public lib..I tell u the lower house are making the noise to satisfy their selfish interest as usual...may God save Nigeria..house of rep. Are Ebola to our national cake.

Federal Government should as a matter of life and death reverse the resumption date as the virus is very deadly and life threating . It is only when one is of sound mind with good health that education comes in place, than endangering the lives of our children and future leaders.

abeg dey shud lve d date as septmbr, by pushing it, dos it mean dey wud contain d virus immediately?, d best tin to do is to put somone at evry sch entrance for checkup bfor anyone enters d school.

I knew this was going to happen at first the federal government did postponed the resumption date to October but the private school owners and some individual kicked against it immediately without critically analyzing the issue at hand and all hell was let loose on the Education minister, the health minister and even the president like they always do without regards now see what the situation is i urge every well meaning Nigerian to be very critical in looking at things and don't just jump into conclusion mostly by abusing the president and ministers at any given opportunity now i hope the private school proprietors can retrace their words and actions because their is a need for resumption to be postponed thank you.

Anonymous said...

Am not against dem opening or not some rich parents can decide to equip dis private sch becos their kids are there and dey will also takes dem to sch wit their big cars, what den wil happen to those in public schs. who will ve to trek some distance to sch, dey can be contacted wit an ebola patient during their treking to sch. In d resumption of schs federal govt should pls not only consider d private sch alone dey should also consider d public schs dat comprises mostly of poor people who can hardly feed three square meal

We need to understand that safety first and education later. These children are not in Havard. More over most of the stakeholders taking these decisions don't have children in any of these schools so they can't really be bothered. ...
At least when ASUU goes on strike for months degrees are still awarded when they resume back. Lets all ensure that the safety of our children is TOP PRIORITY...

resumption should be postponed as recommended by NMA...

Shift the days please! Spoke with NMA and that is what they want us to do!! The number of people being monitored had been increasing every day in PHC to almost 500!!! thermometers??? do you guys have any medical knowledge?? I am a doctor and I AM NOT sending my children to school!!! So you take a temperature in the morning at 7am and child stays in school till 3pm or later; that's 9 hours!! enough time to become febrile, symptomatic. are you going to check temps on the hour?? Sanitisers are antibacterial - not effective against viruses and most of them do not even have up 40% alcohol. Useless. and those gloves? Increased source of infection - dirty gloves used for more than 30 mins equals higher likely hood of infection. let the children stay at home. all it takes is a slight fever in one child to create sheer panic and lock down. In PHC, until the number of contacts we are following are less than 15 or 10; my children stay at home!!! they told us last month that it was under control but there was a rogue case in PHC so it was not under control or contained. I will not take the chance.

All these so called Hon. In d house of rep don't have any other issue or national importance to trash out. How does school resumption curtail or contribute to d spread of EBOLA? Besides churches, makt, Political rallies are still going on. School children can be educated on EBOLA fact in d school not @ home
