Ebola: Doctors reject September 22 schools resumption date

The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, has rejected the Monday September 22nd resumption directive given by FG to all Primary and Secondary schools due to the Ebola outbreak in Nigeria.
The NMA speaking through its National Publicity Secretary, Dr Olawunmi Layaki, said they expect all schools to remain closed until December or early next year when all Ebola suspects under surveillance have been cleared and certified free of the virus.
"We are not happy with this decision on the resumption of schools. Schools should be shut till the last suspected case or patient is certified free of the virus. We can shift the resumption date till next year or in the next three months if that is the time it will take.
Government should have enough time to follow the standard procedure for containing   the virus. Parents have no reason to be   in a hurry because if Ebola should enter any school, it will assume another dimension. Children cannot survive isolation like adults. Nigeria is peculiar because of her large population and we should be pragmatic and proactive. It   will not augur well for the country if we have another outbreak due to carelessness.” it said
In the same vein, the chairman of the Lagos state chapter of the association, Dr Tope Ojo said most public schools lack basic hygienic facilities and this would expose the students to easy spread of the virus.
"It would not have cost the Federal Government anything to have waited till those under surveillance have completed the 21 days in all the states where they are being monitored. The government knows that it takes a longer time for children to get used to the idea of hygiene and sanitation. They are even more vulnerable because they would play with each other whether they are sick or not. How many children know that they should use hand sanitizers or avoid contact with anybody that has fever? Waiting till October when at least the situations in Rivers and Lagos states would have been conclusively managed is another safety measure the government should have taken. These kids are not studying to get a degree, so we are sure it would not have affected schools’ curricula.” he said

I think I agree with NMA on dis....the government shouldn't take chances on dis...I doubt if children really understand Wat dis Ebola virus is all about...

I was actually wondering how they could have coped with this if they should resume. Schools should be closed. These are little kids we are talking about here. There is point in what they are saying.

Even if they say schools should resume next year, so far they're trying to have ebola under control its ok.

Please Federal Government should not play probability with our children's lives. Let there be a zero case of ebola before you allow innocent children back to school. A few weeks or months of missed school is better than a major outbreak of this horrible disease. My earnest prayer is that the Almighty God will cleanse our land of Ebola in Jesus Name.Amen

I share their sentiments, our govt should have sought for the opinion of major stakeholders in the health industry before arriving at their decision.
But they hurriedly announced the resumption date to appear like they've won the war on Ebola.
I hope they'll listen and take heed.

I am a parent too but i think people derive joy in coming out to challenge government policies this days even when there is no good reason to do so. If schools are shut till next year, What happens to Churches? What happens to parties (even children birthday that goes on every where despite Ebola). Again what are parent doing to protect their children from contacting Ebola even when they are at home? Are they going to be locked up and not allowed to see anyone for the 3 months period or will they all travel overseas? It is neither here nor there.

I know that it is the stupid association of private school owners that are pushing for this early resumption, so that parents can start paying school fees sharperly. It will not work for you guys o! Amadioha will not allow it. And incase you idiots succeed in buying the govt over which is not impossible considering how cheap and greedy they are, you guys will come and force us parents to release our children to go to school.

Dis is just a case of private school owners trying 2 satisfy dia selfish needs @ d detriment of the health of Nigerians

God bless NMA. These kids know nothing abt the disease , maybe those in primary might have an idea of what ebola is but what about d little ones in nursery. Anyway my kids r not resuming till next year I'd rather b safe than sorry. All these private schools r just bothered about d school fees and don't care about b welfare of the kids. The greed of man.

I quiet agree with the NMA and NUT. There is no reason for this quick resumption date. Our decision makers have too consider the effect this virus outbreak will cause among children. Decisions should not be made based on sentiments. Have measures be put in place for public schools to address Ebola Virus, has grassroot awareness be began in rural areas. Why is the decision so much in favour of the private schools. The private schools have put in all measures to prevent this virus among their children. We should consider others when we gather to decide. Ebola Virus does not respect wealth at all o. By the way, December is too far o.

A very wise suggestion God bless NMA for bringing such ideal to notice,I believe education s for only those are alive today..A dead man can't go to skol..so I choose health fist befor education, hence the resumption date should there for be postponed from September till a final solution to EVD....

aaaevent said...

as a mother, am not eager to send my children back to school if the ebola situation hasn't been dealt with. rather have them home and alive, than educated to death. Proper measure still need to be taken especially on proper hygiene( school toilets, play activities etc)
it is well with Nigeria.

Anonymous said...

Exactly my point , how many public schools have running water and even some private schools can't boast of having water 24/7. What about d teachers , nannies , cleaners , drivers , cooks all these people will have to interact with d kids , we don't know what they might have been exposed to. I have four kids n they r all I have . It's easier to manage them at home , private schools just want to use our kids as guinea pigs

Anonymous said...

Absolutely agree with the NMA. It's absurd that the government has plans for kids to go back to school before they can assure Nigerians that there are no cases of Ebola in their centers. Poor decision taken by greedy people who want to take money from Nigerian students so that they can pay tuition fees for their children studying abroad.

Unknown said...

I think they have valid points. Please it should be moved forward till assessment carried out show there are no contacts under even surveillance. Nigeria should be certified completely free of Ebola since its a disease that can be managed adequately if the right measures are taken.

Anonymous said...

I agree with this... Makes good sense.. There's no point asking kids back to school when they are nt sure of being safe.. Prevention is better than Cure..

I totally agree with them.

Anonymous said...

Yes o, I concur NMA. D analysis is very true. I'm a mum n I am not open to this children going back to school this september. I mean what's d rush.... people are still on surveillance n we still have one or two Ebola cases n govt is rushing this children back to school. Everything concerning Ebola should be properly cleared before these children go back to school. Its only an healthy child that can attend school. The government n some Nigerians can be very careless sometimes. Should anything negative happens when should resume, you will see them running helter skelter. Come sept 22nd, my child will not resume. I won't take any stupid chances. Heaven only help those who help themselves. When it happens now, u will see people shouting God God God, as if this Great God has not giving people in authority brains to think.

Well said Sylvanus. I wonder what happens to other public gatherings as they only focussed on schools as if d spread began from there. Those doctors shud go back 2 school and learn since they find it difficult challenge ebola to challenge govt decisions.

Once my son resumes school, he's always coming home with either catarrh or cough, once I treat it, he'll contact it again from one of his classmate, it's almost becoming the usual malady of kids in the kindergarten age. So now imagine the case of ebola outbreak, the spread to children will be fast and families will be affected. Anyway my son isn't resuming school until ebola has been put under control. If school owners wants the money badly, they can appeal to parents to start paying school fees now before resumption, even if it's only part payments. Biko.

That aside, where will it be easier for parents to monitor/keep an eye on their kids? In churches where they are with them, or at school where they drop them off and leave them to the mercy of their teachers and minders? At home parents can ensure hygiene better than at school where a teacher/minder has at least twenty children under their care all at once! Abeg think thoroughly before you comment.

The government is under pressure from private schools because some of the people who run these schools are very selfish. All they want is money, they don't care if Ebola virus spreads further.

You are wrong here. Nobody is under compulsion to attend churches and parties, but as a student you must attend school whether you are afraid of ebola or not. One may decide not to attend church service or parties until the scourge of ebola is gone. Unfortunately, students don't have that choice.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the NMA

Anonymous said...

I see the point of NMA that we need a broad-based prevention and containment strategy, however we cannot afford to shut down the country especially the educational sector because there are packets of infections in the country.Conversely, I will rather NMA puts a prevention strategy (that keeps our kids in the classrooms and not at home) forward to the FG. Kids being in schools should be a priority for everyone including both NMA and FG. Postponing schools' resumption without a strategy is not effective either in my opinion.

Unknown said...

Pls I beg you government to kindly hearken to the voice of the people. Do not allow the private schools because of the school fees they want to collect bring untimely death to our children. Why don't we wait until we are 100% sure that this virus is completely out of Nigeria. Let us not because of the pressure from some quarters risk our children's lives. Like one commentator said, these children are not reading to acquire degree today. They cannot manage the situation by knowing who to avoid and who to play with. Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee hear our voice and let the schools remain shut till Nigeria is free from ebola.

So because President's GEJ's wife owns Aduvie school and fellow private school owners like her have mounted pressure on the presidency for schools to re-open because they claim that they have been paying their teachers while they are on holiday and they won't be able to get school fees if they don't resume school; so students should be made to resume. Naija is the only country where money takes preceedence over life and health. I applauded the president initially when resumption of schools was moved to October but GEJ fall my hand pata-pata with this sthoughtless decision. I will rather home-school my kids than to send them to death that was avoidable in the first place

That sylvanus that said he is a parent and that sch shud open bcos children are attending parties and co is not a parent at all.
Let me tell you what I have decided, my children are not going any where. Secondly, since Ebola outbreak, my children don't attend parties any more, what nonsense. How does party help the child?
Take ur child and good luck.
Mine stays home till further notice

when govt announced the postponement date to october the outbreak was only in lagos now there is an outbreak of ebola in portharcourt and you brought the resumption date back to september.come what is wrong with this govt.who should give all is free signal to resume schools in times like like this, is it doctors or private school owners because we know who is sponsoring this campaign .pls parents keep your kids at home till next year.kids are gifts from GOD you can"t replace them .NMA thank you for the professional advice.it's unfortunate if private school owners dont have savings to fall back on despite the huge fees they charge parents.

I quiet agree with them, though the govt should be commended but they should be a little better reasonable,i castigated the shift forward of the resumption from oct 13 t0 22 sept,Govt should not listen to moneymaking school entrepreneurs and owners because if it should happen i mean the Ebola outbreak, schools will be abruptly closed again, prevention is always safer than cure

These doctors don't know what to do with their time. how would you bring up such idea. most families feed from such schools and there are those affected with the current poverty rate in Nigeria. the govt will not come down to the grass root to check whats happening there. pls lets leave the date this way any further change there will be problem in Nigeria.

Schools in portharcourt are resuming on15th. Government schools. Is this not wrong?

Children cannot survive isolation like adults, if an infected student comes to school, there's a probability that the whole class would get infected. Unlike adults, children won't understand the necessity of isolation

Anonymous said...

The people that would suffer this are those in public schools. Private schools may have the finance to give out hand sanitizers and sensitize the students on how to be safe but what happens to public schools lacking such measures?

Anonymous said...

They're sending those kids to get infected. Everything is a scam by federal government. They don't care about the children. Remember the chibok girls still missing

My child is not resuming. When a child gets infected, the highest that the government would do would be to compensate the parents and shut down schools again. No amount of compensation would be equal to a child's life

Anonymous said...

If you are really a parent you'll understand that the government can care less about the life of your child.

So you don't mind if your child gets infected, I don't think you're a parent.liar

I'm sorry, I have never commented on a blog before, but I am moved to say that the previous Sylvanus fellow is clearly a dangerous fellow. However, he has managed to do some good in that he has highlighted other areas of risk that should not be overlooked. For example, last weekend, a neighbour had a big party with canopies etc for one of their children plus friends. We really have to be acutely aware of how life must change, until we conquer this Ebola thing. Large social gatherings should be avoided. What's the use of celebrating a birthday only to now hasten a day of mourning, perhaps even ending your line and those nearby too? Pls tell me o.

A year at home is worse than him maybe getting ebola??? I doubt if you are truly a parent.

There is no rush to kids resuming if the environment is not clear of this deadly virus. It is not an easy thing to quarantine kids. The ripple effects of an outbreak among kids would be hard to curtail. I accept the fact that Private school owners might have a means of managing the situation. But, we should look beyond our kids and their immediate association. We should remember that we have drivers, artisans and co whose kids go to public schools and stand the risk of contacting this virus. These people have direct and indirect contacts with our kids and then what happens after? A few more weeks of stay at home till there is a full certification by the NMA won't kill our kids. Its better to be safe than to be sorry. God forbid! should there be war or natural disasters would we insist that our kids go to school at all cost? We thank God that we do not have such issues in Nigeria but we should please us as parents be patients and pray for a quick and permanent end to this deadly virus.

Although I do agree with the doctors, I don't think sacrificing almost half of the school year is reasonable. Whether school resumption is in september or december, external examinations will still commence and teachers will be under pressure to meet deadlines, thus leaving our children at a disadvantage. The government should at least make concessions for candidates writing external exams or final year students... When Ebola is gone, we might be left with a fragile education system that will take longer to heal.

Just saying :/ ... What do I know?
