Agagu family insensitive to continue with the burial says Association of Undertakers

Funeral managers in Lagos are not happy with late Gov Agagu's family, Encomium magazine reports exclusively. The Association of Undertakers in Lagos are of the opinion that the Agagu family were insensitive to their plight by going ahead with the burial of the former governor when their own man, Mr Tunji Okusanya of MIC did not only lose his life but also his son and four of his staff in the plane crash on Thursday October 3rd. (Mr Okusanya and his son pictured above)

So for this members of the association refused to sell another casket to the Agagu family or partake in the funeral rites. In an interview with Mr Deinde Harrison, the boss of Ebony Caskets & Funeral Managers, he told Encomium the association's anger with the Agagu family. Read the interview after the cut...

What happened between your association and the late Olusegun Agagu family over the burial?
DH:  After the plane crash incident, they approached about three of us undertakers. Before they approached us, we had heard that they were going ahead with the burial and we felt slighted. We felt that if any member of the Agagu family had perished in the air crash, I am sure they would have postponed the burial. Somebody that was helping them to give their father a befitting burial did not only loose his life but that of his son and four members of his staff and yet they were behaving as if nothing happened. That was why we felt it was a slap on our face, therefore we weren't going to participate in the burial.
Did you eventually agree with them because they eventually buried the man with another casket?
DH: No. I think they must have gotten the new casket in Ondo state or somewhere else. But for us here in Lagos, we refused to do it. They must have gotten those who did the burial in Ondo state or anywhere else but not from Lagos.
So those pallbearers were not from M.I.C, who were already stationed in Akure Ondo State?
DH: Not at all. We in Lagos state after the incident held a meeting and agreed among ourselves not to partake in the burial. We called an official of the Ondo state government who told us in confidence that they advised against the Family going ahead with the burial on that Friday October 4 2013, because of the people who lost their lives in the plane crash. He said since they were not the owners of the corpse, they couldn't stop them from burying it. Ondo state government lost a commissioner and four other officials in the plane crash. The Ondo State Government through the official also denied awarding the burial contract directly to Mr Tunji Okusanya. According to the official, the government dealt directly with the family through Mr Femi Agagu, late Gov Agagu's younger brother and former chief of staff in Ondo state when his late brother was the governor and Feyi Agagu, the first and only son of Late Olusegun Agagu.

Are the three corpses going to be buried together, with Agagu sandwiched between the Okunsanya's...father on the bottom, Agagu in the middle and the son at the top, inside one casket...I beg, commot for road mek person hear word!!!!!!

M.I.C's plight is quite understandable but from the standpoint of the Agagus,it wouldn't have made sense to keep the ex-governor's body any further than they already did especially after the plane crash.
What a Feud between the deceased Family and the Funeral service providers.

I really luk like my mum but the resemblance btw the father and son is increadible. I can only imagine how the mother and wife feels. I totally feel the pain of the undertakers but I want to believe the Agagus must have spoken to the affected family before going ahead with the burial. Only God can console all the affected family. RIP.

When stuffs like this happens, I think it's in the best interest of all that the burial is done.If the burial is postponed, who knows if more tragedies might occur whenever the burial is to be held. It's really sad that this happened, but I have a feeling that if any of Agagu's family had lost their lives in the plane crash, the program would have held, albeit without the fanfare.May the souls of the departed rest in peace.

That was extremely heartles of them(The decision makers in the agagu family). Yes the dead are gone but the way they died and the fact that they died catering to the Agagu family deserves some show of respect and that horrible agagu family had the guts to still wear make up and agbadas and all those sherenrinsherins and bury a man that wouldn't cost them that much to hold off for another 2weeks or longer so those grieving can have some type of solace. Heartless people

In my opinion the statement issued by the Agagu family was even more insensitive. They acknowledged that they were going ahead with the burial since Agagu's son and son-inlaw did not make the casualties' list. My prayer is that God will console the families of the dead.

I total agree wit d undertakers... Even Agagu's family press release wat not appropriate, d burial shuld ve been proposed or been done on a low key...How could dey say 'becos d son n d son -inlaw re alive so d burial should continue as if those pple that died re nt human abi...

I really dont want to judge people's decisions but it really baffles me when people can carry on immediately after such tragedy. Just like the family of 5 in the dana flight crash. They were coming to the guy's wedding and died, but the wedding went on? and now this? Like have we lost all form of human "emphaty and sympathy" emotions? have we become an all about me country. Really baffles me walahi

Anonymous said...

O please! Nigerians and sentiments. Would delaying the mans burial have brought back the dead? No! Do you want the man to take more souls? No. The arrangements already made, would all turn into waste and another waste repeated again?.No! It is well with the family of the dead. We are all are going to die someday. When and how, we dont know. This association should reverse this act because the family of the rich dead people, can easily fly in a casket and the undertakers in the other parts of the country would gladly do it. So grow up! and face the real issues.

I totally agree with the undertakers decision. The Agagu family was totally insensitive by going ahead with the stupid burial. Who does that??? People lost their lives during the course of going to bury the man and the family have the audacity of going ahead with the burial. That is not only being insensitive but an act of being inhuman and wicked. If their son or son-in law had died, I 'm sure they would have postponed the burial. Shame on the Agagu family for their actions of being insensitive. And kudos to the Lagos Undertakers for their decisions. It could have been anyone of them too.

The situation with regards to the Okusanya's is quite sad. But unfortunately, that is life for you. the beat goes on. Any lessons? Pall bearers should, as an association, have a packaged insurance deal that covers life, serious injury and accidents in the line of duty. Accidents are inevitable, and with the risks undertaken by these guys in the line of duty, they owe it to their families to be well protected via insurance contracts with a charge back to prospective clients.

I think 1 or 2days in respect of the dead wasn't too much to give.

I had the exact same sentiment! After people died doing to bury their father, I expected them to delay the burial a bit to pay respect to those that died because of their father. The consequential deaths were too tragic abeg! And no one should tell me there're not something sinister about the whole event. God knows and sees all!

To all that think that the 'association of dead carriers' are stupid or that we have been paid or that we are seeking publicity.......i assure you that death is the one constant in life. You too will feel the pain of a loved one passing one day but i pray that it will not be in such tragic circumstances as we are going thru now as an industry. There is a double standard in nigeria, that crash site and everything in it part of an active accident scene and potential crime scene. Everything , including the casket of the late governor should have been held until the coroner or AIB said otherwise. Forget the sentiment of our industry, what happened was illegal, that casket should not have been handed back to the family. But, money and power talk first in nigeria. Samira, whoever you are, one day you will look back and see how irresponsible your statements are and we when you suffer your loss, we the 'stupid' people will be there to comfort you.

sometimes am baffled at how insensitive humans can be. All u making comments of d undertakers not making sense, pls for a minute put urself in d shoes of one who lost a son, father, brother, sister, or a spouse in this crash. will u still make boldly this comments. If Mrs Agagu had lost her son in dat crash, will she have d heart or strength to be present at d burial. Now there is a woman or a family who has lost both a father and son in one day as a result of traveling for Agagu's burial. Many families are pained as a result of the death of their love ones. Since nothing happened to Agagu's corspe and his family, is a postponement of d burial rites by a day, just to show respect for the dead be too much? how about a low key burial? Even d statement released by Agagu's family was disheartening and most insensitive. We are all going to die but this is no way to die. Lets all be sensitive. God is watching u, God is watching me, God is watching us frm a distance. He seeth d secret and has with Him d appointed time to reward every man accordingly. May the souls of d departed rest in peace.

arrant nonsense, why should the agagu family delay the burial.....and for those insulting the family you are all very stupid....there was nothing insensitive in what they did cos all parties involved are dead and no amount of delay will bring them back....besides delaying the burial is just increasing the stress level for them...the MIC guy got a contract from the government of Ondo state (let them come out and deny it if it is a lie) so it was not the Agagu family that contracted them.....going ahead with their father,s burial is just to let things move on so their life's can get back to normal and not in anyway insensitive like some fools are saying.....while nobody is blaming anybody for the crash, MIC choose the aircraft cos he got the contract as the funeral. undertaker..i dont see the need for any conflict, cos it was MIC that decided to go by air and go with his son and manager.....nobody is happy for their father,s burial to be remembered by tragedy so pls they should allow agagu,s family grieve in peace.....may all their souls rest in peace

you idiot what is in the statement by the agagu family that shows insensitivity.......MIC is a contractor who was paid for his job and he choose to go there so he can oversee his work......the agagu family did not choose the aircraft neither did they cause the accident....will they tell all the quest that gathered from all over Nigeria to come back for another funeral? they tried to make the burial as low keyed as possible but it was not possible cos he was a former governor who had done a lot for his people and community......sentiments aside, delaying the burial was just unnecessary.....

For the Agagu daughters and wife to have the nerve of wearing lipstick just beats me. If their own son, brother, son-in -law had died in the crash would they have been able to stand in that church for the burial let alone be wearing full blast makeup and stylish headgears/ see through lace? common! How insensitive. The daughter was so stoic with some serious look of attitude displayed as well. There was no iota of remorse or respect shown to the deceased / victims. They even had the audacity to be tying stylish headgear trying to look very stylish for their father's funeral... they should have all worn a more sombre look I am afraid. you know what? they are a bunch of insensitive so and so.. Were they thinking of how the likes of Ese Falae, the Okusanyas and the less mentioned like the Durus, Akintundes etc will be feeling? . Mrs LonDoN,UK.

. i am in total bewilderment that people are talking as if a funeral is an owambe party that could have been postponed because merriment was not a need. The pain associated with a funeral should instruct the writer that funerals are indeed sober events. All those postulants as to the postponement of the funeral have not told us for how long the funeral should have been postponed. This points to another fact that human beings in Nigeria cannot be pleased and that we must live our lives according to the dictates of our hearts.
The man who is said to have spoken on behlaf of the Agagu family spoke for himself as such, you cannot treat the Agagus as though they made such statement. I also imagine that the writer must have twisted the words. The only person, the designated spokesman for the Agagus is Mr. Femi Agagu.
The Agagus are really in pain. I have met Feyi and his brother inlaw and the thought that people that they joked with before the flight died in it leaves them in great pain. I am also shocked that no one has talked about the ministry of aviation and the need for tight regulation. I am shocked that the writer has deceided to immerse himslef int he gutter of Nigerian diabolism and juju antics.
I have prayed fervently to God that our people should now enter the dawn of reason. When science conquers superstition, we as a people will advance.
To the writer I ask, "is it possible for a pregnant woman to give birth to a live goat?"
