Another man dies of Ebola in Nigeria

Nigeria has recorded another death from the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus. This time it is a staff of the Lagos Liason office of the Economic Community of West African State - ECOWAS headquarters, Mr Jatto Abdulqudir. Confirming his death in a statement, ECOWAS management said the 36 year old man was among those who assisted the late Liberian Patrick Sawyerr when he came to Lagos for a regional meeting and was quarantined after Sawyerr died of the deadly disease. This brings to three the number of deaths from the deadly virus in Nigeria. The first two being Sawyerr and a Nigerian nurse.

Find the full text of the ECOWAS statement after the cut...

"The ECOWAS Commission announces with deep regret the passing of a staff member of its Lagos Liaison Office, Mr. Jatto Asihu Abdulqudir, aged 36. Mr. Abdulqudir, a Protocol Assistant, was among those who assisted the Liberian delegate to a regional meeting Mr. Patrick Sawyer, who died from the Ebola Virus Disease at a Lagos hospital on 25th July 2014.

“Mr. Abdulqudir had been under quarantine following that sad incident.

“The Commission wishes to use this opportunity to express its gratitude to Nigerian government authorities and others who contributed to managing the late official while under quarantine. The Management of the Commission wishes to commiserate with Mr. Abdulqudir’s family and colleagues and prays for the repose of his soul.

"Before this sad event, the Commission working in collaboration with Nigerian health authorities, had disinfected all the facilities of the ECOWAS Lagos Liaison Office as part of precautionary measures to safeguard the health, safety and security of staff members, and will continue to monitor the situation.

“Management has also intensified awareness campaign among staff on the deadly virus and uses this opportunity to invoke the spirit of solidarity and mutual assistance.
“The Commission wishes to reassure staff of all Community Institutions all over the entire region that it is taking all necessary steps to guarantee their health and safety.

“Furthermore, Management enjoins all staff members and community citizens in general to intensify the observance of personal hygiene. They should also report any suspected case to health facilities and seek medical advice or attention for the effective containment and defeat of the Ebola disease.
“On the directive of regional leaders, ECOWAS has already set up a Solidarity Fund to fight the disease and has solicited the support   contribution of Member States and development partners to the Fund to rid the region of the virus.

“The ECOWAS Commission wishes to reiterate its continued commitment to support Member States in confronting this deadly virus.”

Oh, Patrick Sawyer what did we do to deserve this? Oh, Liberian government, why did you intentionally send Patrick Sawyer to us? Why? Why? Liberian deputy minister of finance, what term will we give this type of terrorism?

And that is why everyone has to be careful. This disease has no cure and once infected no turning back. It spares no family once contacts and infection takes place. RIP to the dead.

Read Saharareporters and learn about how Patrick Sawyer who was being monitored for possible Ebola was cleared by the government to attend ECOWAS meeting. And their ambassador has the guts to complain that we should not stereotype Liberians in this country. Shame!

How can he have contracted the disease from passing contact with Sawyer? Isn't the disease contracted from contact with the afflicted's bodily fluids?

God!!! You are so dumb!! You obviously do not know what protocol officers do...

How does your brain interprete anything written up there to mean that Sawyer attended a Lagos conference... #sigh.

Please read up and enlighten yourself and don't display your utter ignorance so blatantly..

Anonymous said...

nigerian government might conspire to kill the infected because trying to treat them with no facilities will cause more harm. maybe Its from a window side that lethal injection will be shot at them

dontbeignorant said...

The man was obviously the one mandated to get him from the airport, get him settled him and arrange his departure to Calabar for the regional meeting..

That's what protocol officers do

Shyla said...

I still blame the Liberian govt that gave him clearance to leave his country and I blame our own useless and porous govt for allowing him in, knowing he was coming from an already infected country. Now innocent people are dying just because they decided to carry out the said duties. Who knows how much more are yet to go. Their stupid apology is not enough to remedy this situation. All these united communities of these countries should rise up and fight this global problem. Apologising is not enough!

This crisis has opened our eyes to the loopholes in our health system. In western countries, you'll find wash-hand basins and sanitisers and other sanitary materials along the corridors, in consultation rooms etc. It's obvious that health facilities in Nigeria don't have this practice and their personnel are not trained on sanitisation/sterilisation. I remember how my mother was quarantined in the UK after she returned sick with malaria from a visit to Nigeria. First Consultant Hospital failed to take necessary precautions and it's safe to conclude that the hospital has been spreading various infections to their unsuspecting customers through their careless and reckless regard for cleanliness.

Way forward, health officials caring for those in quarantine must ensure their gears are well disinfected or make use of disposables that can be burnt after use. Please don't use the same gloves on different patients. Make use of disposable cutlery, plates, cups and trays. These must be burned after use and not recycled. Do not wash or sanitise gloved hands cos that weakens the gloves, just discard.

Above all, dear people, let's cry to GOD to keep this virus away from us.

Unknown said...

Hmmmmm.....this is not funny at all. May the souls of the departed RIP. Pls Nigerian govt. should do everythg possible to get the experimental drugs to avert more death, me am tired of this Ebola death news every day in my dear country. Cos I hv no where to run to. God into ur hands I commit my spirit!

I don't want to believe that the Liberian diplomat intentionally came to Nigeria to spread this virus. If this were to be the case, he has a whole lot of questions to answer when he meets his creator. The blood of these innocent people would cry out for justice.

Becareful of what you say before heaven will strike you dead. What will you not blame the government for. Haven't you heard that the sickness kills wiithin 21days. Patrick infected them on 23rd or 24th and died on 25th of july, count from then to now.

It is becoming glaring that we are faced with a deadly disease. I want to announce to you that it is time to surrender to Jesus fully. Because greater is HE that is in me than he in Ebola virus.

I pray that the liaison officer and the nurse who have died, may their souls rest in peace

its high time we quarantine our selves thru the scriptures,it very obvious that such a thing and worse will surface in these last days but some people will be exempted.
God has not given us the spirit of fear.what you fear you attract.Job said that what he fear most has befallen him.if the epidemic succeeds to impact fear on you you automatically u become vulnerable to the disease. personal hygiene sure is a great measure but spiritual hygiene grantees total immunity.

The Ambassador should be sent back to Liberia. This is the same Ambassador that wanted Sawyer released to infect more people. Ministry of Foreign Affairs, over to you. Lagosians insist on his deportation to Liberia. He has failed his job.

So why did d ECOWAS regional heads not in their right minds decide to cancel the meeting? Knowing fully well of the outbreak of the disease in the region. Wouldn't that have been a safer bet to curbing the spread of the disease in the first place?

It is not airborne but can be passed by physical contact. E.g holding or shaking someone who is sweating on his hand. Even collecting money from an infected person you know how guys don't wash their hands after peeing...they can still have wiiwii on their hands and pass it to others

Did u read the info abt this deadly disease? As long as the symptoms r der (which doesn't happen all @ the same time) den one is a dangerous host waiting to infect all he cums in contact with (n mind u, symptoms such as vomiting / diarrhea) r easily ovr looked by many who feels dey r normal without giving deep consideration. GET UR FACTS CLEAR ABT THIS. VIRUS( COS THE WAY U SOUNDED AM PRETTY SURE U IGNORANT) COS U CHOOSE TO

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous 2:50AM
Sweat/Saliva/Vomit is considered bodily fluids, if he touched the guy's sweat and then proceeds to put his hands in his mouth or eyes then the virus enters. That is why it is very important that we wash our hands at ALL times.

Unknown said...

Exactly, they use words like QUARANTINE, which is just another word for go to hell and die, since der is no cure readily available in 9ga ( dey leave dem der till it gets worse and dey die ( cos no 9ga doctor / nurse) are ready to die or endanger their loved ones by having contact with a host/deadly virus ( May God help us)

Anonymous said...

Can u believe P sawyer intentionally urinated on the doctors and nurses when they told him of his diagnosis? He wanted it to spread!!! Am so sad..so so sad! God pls protect your own.

Sawyer was deliberately sent to infect Nigerians by the Liberian govt so that the world could hear their cry or better still the whole ebola tin is a plot by the USA...How come we didnt hear of any victim infected by him from his departure airport and those he associated with before his arrival in Nigeria ?Moreso he was a suspected ebola patient haven stayed with and cared for an ebola infected relative....fuck Liberian Govt or whoever behind this..daris God o...God protect us all...

Anonymous said...

The Nigerian govt should b blame 4 not screening him(patrick) on his arrival havent they hear of d predicament dat is befalling liberia? Oh! They tot as a top govt official he is above d sickness, see wot negligence has cause.onyekababyface@gmail.com

Oma said...

Yes, i strongly believe they have not told us the whole truth. from this statement, "was among those who assisted the Liberian delegate to a regional meeting" It is safe to assume that PS was at the regional meeting! Yet they initially told us he was taken to the hospital from the airport.

Hmmm, all those behind this Ebola terrorism, remember that you dont throw stones in the market, it just might hit a family member... maybe not now, but surely sometime.
