FG orders indefinite suspension of Resident Doctors in Teaching Hospitals
Resident Doctors in Nigerian Teaching Hospitals have been suspended by
the Federal Government starting yesterday August 13th. According
to a letter sent out by the Permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry
of Health, the indefinite suspension is meant to help the Federal Govt 'appraise the challenges facing the health sector'.
Health sector in Nigeria is finally collapsing @ a time when d masses need it d most. Federal government can afford to suspend residency be cos when the politicians need medical care they travel to the best hospital in d world but when d common person needs it, he dies cos d health care system in Nigeria had long collapsed. At a time Ebola is killing Nigerians, d government should be looking for a way to resolve d issues they ve with doctors, but instead they do d worst. If der is no residency, der will be no training of medical students anymore and Nigeria will go back to a country dt do not ve Medical doctors. All a doctor does is trying to save lives but y d hate on doctors. Nigeria, I weep for d future
On top the 5k hazard allowance, our Government are just jokers. they have all type of allowance and they expect people to risk their lives for nothing. Rubbish
This is reallyyy crazyyy. I wonder who abi those evn advicing the president on wat to do concerning health care. Resident Dr re the ones dt really see the patients. They stay al nyt with them well the house officers included. They re expectin the consultants to start do such tinzzz. ? HmmM ooo see trouble
Dear Linda be a professional and read the letter properly..the Dr's have not been suspended, the residency program has been suspended meaning they are FIRED! Fact check madam..
I detest the way Doctors are being treated in Nigeria. Medicine is a very nobel profession, but every now and then, government treats Doctors anyhow. Haba, smtimes you see Doctors on the streets with their labcoats looking like mechanics!
In a few years now someone will say I need a gynecologist and the answer will be sorry we don't have around, try Abuja or Togo, we stopped training specialist a few years ago. The wise decision wad made by the then president, Goodluck Ebola Jonathan
This govt is clueless,,theu ve just started a battle they cant win,,its my constituency,,i know better,,any ill informed descision taken by d govt is 2 d advantage of doctors,no matter hw unheard it may sound,,@ least dey ll ave time 2 cncentrate n make more money 4rm their private practise,,while their salary is running 4rm Govt own hsp,,sooo who is @ lost= d masses,,n our govt claim they love us,do they?? It's obvious these politicians do not have any plans for the masses cos this will definitely lead to another mass exodus of medical professionals. If u don't need ur doctors, other countries do. I won't be surprised if saudi arabia starts advertising this month. If we do not insist that a law be passed that restricts public office holders from travelling abroad for medical care, then health care in Nigeria is definitely in a morbid state and it will die soon.
Are u in primary school? Hope u know that it is not just doctors that are on strike. It's a reflection of the failure of this administration and they just made things worse with this decision. Segun, the only way this does not affect u or someone u know is if u leave abroad.
My thoughts exactly. This country now constantly remind us that it is unrewarding to go to school. I don't see anyone aspiring to go to medical school after dis decision. I think I'll buy a ball or a mic.
God Punish U doctors in entirety U think U can hold the nation to ransome? Retards how many of u have gone to govt/general hospitals and see how they treat patients like rags and they loose uncountable no of their patients daily as a result of negligence and greed some of them just flash their dirty faces @ the govt hospital by 11 and leave @ 12 to their private practice as against 8am to 6pm they are meant to work before nyt shit comes thereby shorting govt and tax payers. All health professional residency should be sponsored not just the residency of physicians alone. Good move mr president. Doctors should pay for their studies like the other health professionals. Residency my ass...God has done again.
If only Jona knew how teaching hospitals runs, he won't make this mistake. resident doctors are the pillar of the Hosp. the consultants only gives instructions and the resident doctors carry it out. which consultant wan set line for u or give injection or stay in the Hosp till 7pm to attend to all patients. Jobs can't win this race.

I think Mr president is working with bad councillors for taking dis drastic and deadly decision in d health sector.. May God help us especially d future generation.
Blessing dearie, a medical doctor would never parade the streets in ward coats. They are called WARD COATS for crying out loud! Those who do that are usually the paramedics- lab scientists, record officers and the likes but you will never know because they pass themselves off as docs! So smh
Shame! A big shame on what is supposed to be called government/ leadership in this nation. This is worse that cutting off the nose to spite the face! It's as good as shutting down universities because the educational system is failing. It's like firing the police/military because there is insecurity in the land. It's like saying because we have poor leaders, all of them should be impeached at the same time, afterall, we have to 'assess the challenges of leadership'. I thought advisers were paid heavily to think about the good of Nigerians, but clearly, from their output, one can clearly see that all they care for is themselves. At this rate, Nigeria has no future. When u casualise a doctor, who takes responsibility for the 'continued medical education' that has come to become a pre-requisite for annual re-registration all over the world? Who trains the students...all u want to have is head knowledge with no clinical practice?
Our leaders do not think of the future......every man for himself, God for us all!!!

Your ignorance really stinks...the government hospitals are ill equipped likewise those private hospitals. If you are mentally stable you would realise this singular action just moved you from frying pan.to fire... There are not enough doctors in Nigeria and 16000 thousand doctors out of the 30000 are sacked and you are happy the government just sabotaged the future.of health in this country
.when next you and other Nigerians have reasons to require specialist care you would be sent to places like Indian even Togo by those doctors that choose to stay behind.....because then these ancient crop of consultants would be long dead and they succeeded in training no one....and please dont think doctors from other countries would come down to Nigeria to work in these useless country for peanuts in a currency that is so useless.
Please I'm a doctor and I know Nigerians thanks to poverty can't even take care of themselves most Nigerians are poor and malnourished presenting to the hospital late and they expect a miracle in a poor medical setting
Hmmmmm.....and you expect the doctor that paid for his residency to treat your malnourished self for free because medicine is charity... When you are given bills you lament..... Jesus wept
NMA response to sack of resident doctorsConfirmed now that the FGN has released a lettrer to the ministry of health directing it to Suspend d residency programme CMDs to sack all resident with 1 month salary in lieu Board to ensure hospital runs with locus medical officers renewable 6monthly Consultants are left out Divide and RULE Casual ideation of medical profession
Way forward 1. EDM immediately 2. NMA directs MDCAN to embark on strike over unconstitutional sack of our students and stoppage of specialization in the nation.( the court case in question do not affect these matter) 3. NMA direct MDCN to withdraw training of medical students 4. NMA directs all doctors not to pick up any locus job and enforce it via picketing 5. Any CMD that enforces the sack is black listed 6. Group practice to Cather for our needs to be set up.And d battle line is drawn
Let's note dat Jonathan just single handedly destroyed d health sector in Naija. If MDCAN joins in dis strike den private hospitals wud have to shot down. Also dis means dere ll be no more training of medical students as all medical schools ll be shot down.Make I sidon dey watch.Jonathan Jonathan Jonathan.u just lost d 2015 elections without contesting.heheheheheehhehe
You all fail to realise one thing. This is all but a gangster move. Who says the health sector has to collapse cos residency is suspended? Its d only way to get the doctors back to work. Trust me.
Of course consultants dont have to work alone. They only need to work with same doctors but under a new contract. Its either that for NMA or dey back down on their prepostrous demands.
Yes I agree totally wt u. But cn we see it from d president's point of view. He must be feeling so bad dt d doctors abandoned him at dis critical time. He begged them to com bk but dey refused. It's jst a pity. & d doctors were feeling cool about d strike as a measure to prevent /curtail EVD frm spreading amongst dem.
Anonymous 9:09. Indeed..'God has done again' ...see how you turned God to 'roasted corn'...because of your stupidity and bad english...God has done again undeed! Mscheeew!
The worst decision ever!!! And to all those saying trash abt doctors, I dare u to go to/ thru medical school if it's easy! All these nonsense juhesu posing as anonyshit
And when you fall sick you and trust me you will...you will pay through your teeth....because if and when reasonable ppl like me decide to come back to this crazy country you and your foolish govt won't be able to afford us...trust me,then all your taxes would go to just paying my bills .while you try to reply though if you are reasonable you won't, put it at the back of your mind that Nigerians are so gullible they respect anything foreign that's why lebanese that are drivers in their countries will come to Nigeria and lord you while you answer yes sir despite your better qualification..
I wonder how easy it is to type stupid docs and you still run to the doctors for help and you are still begging the doctors to resume work because of Ebola epidemic.... I'm a doctor proud of who I am....and I justly point my fingers at you and label you ignorant
Anonymous 10:45...I will take my not to insult because you manner of thinking is worse than any insult I would have thought about.....did you for one think of who will replace these your glory consultants when they retire?do remember it's these same residents that study, pass and become consultants...if these present consultants get off the work force...who will replace them?
Please your brain ain't just in your skull to make it relevant.. Think
@ Orela Dimples ur simply a medical bigot and it's obvious ur a quack if @ all u qualified from any medical school. It's likes of U that needs to be beheaded in dis country hopeless woman U think u can play politics here with the nation's health care why are u complaining and cry foul? Co's u ve been sacked take your murder practice to those countries that will appreciate u fool what is ur contribution to this country or the health sector? U thief u talk about the state of equipments and facilities in the government hospital come on are they not ur likes that vandalize and steal from the government hospitals in a criminal move to equip the Damn private clinics without adequate approvals to set up and operate? U retard are they not ur like that even go to d extent of stealing vital drugs from Govt hospital pharmacies to dispense privately to unsuspecting patients @ a private fee? Idiot in case u don't know health care is more of humanitarian than commercial. The so called countries u mention like India and co their doctors and armed forces do not go on strike becos they are in business of providing essential service. Imagine if the Nigeria armed forces all go on a one month strike if u can survive in dis country U nonentity Ain't u ashamed that even your president of NMA that is if u are a medical doctor and not a native doctor saw reason with the masses of Nigeria and called off the strike and went ahead to resign his position than to be part of this orchestrated fraud of the doctors strike being sponsored by some disgruntled elements that wish Nigeria evil. @ Orela Dimples Go and Die U Have Lost Your Job if @ all ur in dis category RETARD!!!!
Dear Libbers, If you put aside your hatred of doctors, for whatever reason, for a moment, and THINK... AND EVEN GET SOME BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE ... 1. Residency program is the period, after qualifying as a medical doctor, during which SPECIALIST TRAINING, to become a gynaecologist, or paediatrician, physician (internist), oncologist, general surgeon, orthopedic surgeon, plastic surgeon, pathologist, radiologist, cardiologist, neurologist, neurosurgeon, to name a few specialties, occurs. 2. The teaching hospitals and many general hospitals and federal medical centres where you can see a specialist run residency training as a service to the nation PLUS a source of additional manpower to provide service. 3. Other countries are striving to either establish residency training or strengthen existing programs because the doctor with just the MBBS degree only pRovides a level of competence that cannot treat all complicated disorders. 4. It's like suspending PHD degrees to appraise the education sector?..unfortunately, the ripple effect involves human lives. It is a CRAZY DECISION. FULL STOP.
The most worst n stupid decision ever by joe.it was 1 doctor to 4000 patients bfor now.now it's going to b worst cos the colsultate don't do d work,d residential doctors do.its d common man dat would suffer cos wen d so called big men fall ill,evn for headache, dey r flown out.....
My contribution is not directly about the strike but about institutions saddled with the responsibility of residency trainihg. There are 3 postgraduate medidal colleges, two are international, west african college of surgeons and west african college of physicians owned by west african nations. The headquarters of these colleges are in Lagos. By Law of the Federation, the nation has its own National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, located in Ijanikin, Lagos. These 3 Colleges were established to oversee training of resident doctors to become specialists. I am only giving information to readers to guide their contributions. Thank you.
Spot on! Those doctors should be replaced immediately. There are countless numbers of willing and more dedicated medical personnel who can replace them. Come to think of it; in whose interest have they been on strike? What about the lives of friends and loved ones (including my beloved cousin) that have been lost as a result of their refusal to attend to patients? If or after they may have achieved their strike-aims, of what benefit or advantage will it be to the families of the bereaved? Doctors/medical personnel should not compare themselves with lecturers and others who can go on strike at a moment's notice. They must not forget that they swore to protect and save lives; hence, there are others better ways to lobby or drive home their points and demands. I totally support this move by the Federal Government.
FOR ME, THIS IS GREAT NEWS, LOTS OF GOVT DOCTORS HAVE PRIVATE HOSPITALS OUTSIDE WHERE THEY SPEND MORE TIME, REQUEST FOR ALL ALLOWANCES AND ALWAYS ON PAID STRIKE AND LEAVE RESIDENT DOCTORS(CONTRACT) TO MANAGE GOVT HOSPITALS, THIS WAY, THEY WOULD HEAD BACK TO WORK AND BE FORCED TO RECRUIT THESE DOCTORS AS PERMANENT STAFF IN THEIR PRIVATE HOSPITALS..... ITS A GOOD THING.. GEJ IS THINKING.. D
With the space of 6 wks can u really quatity d numba of bread winners dat have died. Widows orphans broken hearts all over nigeria bcos of the pride and fears of nigerian doctors. The president has done what is right to stop NMA boko haram.
the main problem of majority of Nigerians is ignorance. people are happy that GEJ sacks resident doctors, yet same populace wants to see a pediatrician, wants to be attended to by a gynecologist, wants surgery done by a surgeon. do u think that they dropped from heaven? any way the truth is the populace bears the hardship and i only pity out poor people. time will tell.
he doesnt understand what residency training means in medical profession...so all we have now in federal hospitals are just consultants, MO and house officers...he just want to make nigeria health sector worse..i really do hope the populace understand mr president has just sacked doctors that do 90% of the patients' management...more lives wld be lost than even than BH attacks if he doesnt reverse his decision

Doctors are bunch of proud mofos with most dumb headed, gone are the days when medical doctors are well respected..I think this is a good move for by the president...Only a few can understand anyway...Private hosps can never be closed cos these doctors also want to make money and secondly if closed their relatives both far and near will also suffer for it...
I don't trade insults with people like you but be rest assured I'm still on the payroll... I didn't loose my job I'm thinking of the younger ones behind me.no right thinking private practitioner would steal out dated and spoilt equipments from public hospitals to equip theirs... Is it the rechargeable lantern I beg a nurse to hold for me while closing up a patient on the theatre table when there is power outage?my dear get your facts right..
Doctors and security personnel I other countries don't embark on.industrial actions because they are well catered for....
If all doctors are on strike and some sacked who will replace the doctors?...the pharmacist, nurses and lab technicians?they have had this strike period to actually replace these doctors why aren't they capable?
And after insulting d doctors, you'll stil come to us for help wen you're sick. U need to realise dat ds irrational decision affects only d masses. politicians travel abroad wen dey need medical checkups. Dummy

Well d end will justify d means. Fashola tried it,it didnt work so i dont see Y Fg's owwn will. ~Rumestikal~ ....lost for words
its very funny, while other nations are busy training their doctor, our president is busy suspending the residency programme.I dont see that decision as that of someone who we should vote for come 2015.it is a selfish decision that only favour the rich bc immediately they fall sick, they jet off abroad looking for d best hosiptal with Best Consultant to treat them.yet depriving our country from producing consultant.it is a SElfish decision Mr president.ln l0yr time, most doctors in Nigeria will be half baked. And lf anyone travel outside to do a residency programme, believe you me, consultancy fee will not be affordable for the poor masses.Think about the masses not only you and ur selfish crew members.
Dnt mind dem... dey r all selfish!!..sanotors n other top government officials ve all sorts alarming allowances n doctors r supposed to risk lives for wot?... 5k?... JOKERS!!!... their judgment on in hell!!!!
I don't think the president know the duties of the resident doctors(they are the one that basically teach medical students from their clinical years except during consultant rounds/consultant clinic day which occur just once a week).lf the residency programme is suspensed, medical schools are sure to produce half baked doctors cos consultants are not readily available and above all, they can't take calls. They are only called upon encountering difficult cases.Mr president, wake up from ur slumber.secondly, I do hope this is not a strategy to privatized hosiptals?chei, der is God oh.

Jesus wept
NMA response to sack of resident doctorsConfirmed now that the FGN has released a lettrer to the ministry of
health directing it to
Suspend d residency programme
CMDs to sack all resident with 1 month salary in lieu
Board to ensure hospital runs with locus medical officers renewable 6monthly
Consultants are left out
Divide and RULE
Casual ideation of medical profession
Way forward
1. EDM immediately
2. NMA directs MDCAN to embark on strike over unconstitutional sack of
our students and stoppage of specialization in the nation.( the court
case in question do not affect these matter)
3. NMA direct MDCN to withdraw training of medical students
4. NMA directs all doctors not to pick up any locus job and enforce it
via picketing
5. Any CMD that enforces the sack is black listed
Think before you type. How many doctors run private hospitals?
There will be brain 'fly' od doctors now, not brain drain (draining is too slow, to describe what will happen)
You all fail to realise one thing. This is all but a gangster move. Who says the health sector has to collapse cos residency is suspended? Its d only way to get the doctors back to work. Trust me.
Lovely.....pay for ur training stupid docs
Of course consultants dont have to work alone. They only need to work with same doctors but under a new contract. Its either that for NMA or dey back down on their prepostrous demands.
I'm sure it's APC that secretly propagandized this move. So that Jona go fail.
It is EVD...
Hahaaaa! & bitter kola
Suspended indefinitely, dear. Dts wat d letter said. But of course it's a euphemism for fired.
Ur brain is surely under your ampit....
Your calamity cometh!
You have a cockroach brain.
Lab scientist not technicians idiot!!!!!!"""!

GEJ u are my president and will rule again come 2015, u did a great job with these heartless doctors. When hunger mama them they will bow.
@ Ashley ndu, u r d idiot. Lab tech is right. Must u insult people? Daft MF
Think
You are stupid
Apple is an ass hole
This one na real ass hole. You have your brain kept in the belly?
Dear Libbers,
If you put aside your hatred of doctors, for whatever reason, for a moment, and THINK...
Private Hospitals...here I come...I wish LIB had smileys...#biggrin
My contribution is not directly about the strike but about institutions saddled with the responsibility of residency trainihg. There are 3 postgraduate medidal colleges, two are international, west african college of surgeons and west african college of physicians owned by west african nations. The headquarters of these colleges are in Lagos. By Law of the Federation, the nation has its own National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, located in Ijanikin, Lagos. These 3 Colleges
were established to oversee training of resident doctors to become specialists.
A welcome development. I sometime wonder if these doctors remember the oath they swore.
Orela n omo boy were wrong! U av sawdust for brains.. mufu
GEJ is obviously sick. Rather Dan progressing in nigeria we kip retrogressing. Wat a nation. I am ashamed to be called a Nigerian.
na wa 4 our 9ja doctors sef.....since july....anyways it is well
With the space of 6 wks can u really quatity d numba of bread winners dat have died.
Whatever indeed
he doesnt understand what residency training means in medical profession...so all we have now in federal hospitals are just consultants, MO and house officers...he just want to make nigeria health sector worse..i really do hope the populace understand mr president has just sacked doctors that do 90% of the patients' management...more lives wld be lost than even than BH attacks if he doesnt reverse his decision

@Anon 1.02am,when death mama the public well una go take to the streets to complain about your senseless, clueless, useless, worthless leaders
These colleges make use of the teaching hospitals.. The govt has just stated the teaching hospitals shouldn't function in that respect
If all doctors are on strike and some sacked who will replace the doctors?...the pharmacist, nurses and lab technicians?they have had this strike period to actually replace these doctors why aren't they capable?
Only a thief knows a thief. Yeah India and other countries don't pay their docs 5k hazard allowance. Anuofia
And after insulting d doctors, you'll stil come to us for help wen you're sick. U need to realise dat ds irrational decision affects only d masses. politicians travel abroad wen dey need medical checkups. Dummy

NO CAUSE FOR ALARM, VERY SOON PTS IN NIGERIA WILL BE TREATED BY CONSULTANT NURSES AND CONSULTANT LAB SCIENTISTS
che! this is not the best solution
Anonymous 7.13pm...???????
its very funny, while other nations are busy training their doctor, our president is busy suspending the residency programme.I dont see that decision as that of someone who we should vote for come 2015.it is a selfish decision that only favour the rich bc immediately they fall sick, they jet off abroad looking for d best hosiptal with Best Consultant to treat them.yet depriving our country from producing consultant.it is a SElfish decision Mr president.ln l0yr time, most doctors in Nigeria will be half baked.
Annon 9:15 u r clearly finking with ur pussy/ dick... blessing is ryt dey evn go as far as going to hospital canteens with dia ward coat!!!!
