Nigeria becomes Africa's biggest economy, with $510billion

Article written by Associated Press writer, Michelle Faul. It's quite interesting. Read!
Nigeria's recalculated economy is worth $510 billion, by far the biggest in Africa, officials announced Sunday using long overdue revised data that gives the West African nation continental bragging rights but does little for the 70 percent of its citizens living in poverty.
The new value of Nigeria's GDP adds previously uncounted industries like telecommunications, information technology, music, airlines, burgeoning online retail outlets and Nollywood film production that didn't exist when the last GDP count was made in 1990. Then, there were 300,000 landlines. Today, Nigeria has 100 million cell phone users.

The new figures also will take account of growth in agriculture and tourism that have flourished since democracy was restored in 1999, ending decades of military dictatorship.

With one fell swoop, Nigeria knocked out of the ring South Africa, whose GDP of $353 billion was previously counted the biggest on the continent and which is the only African member of the G20.
"Nigeria's success is a reminder that Africa is moving ahead despite its current challenges," said investment manager Kevin Daly of UK-based Aberdeen Asset Management, which invests in Africa. He pointed out that it is a Nigerian, billionaire Aliko Dangote, who is building Africa's largest privately owned oil refinery.

Investors' attention will be drawn by the fact that while oil remains the biggest source of government revenue, about 80 percent, oil production is declining while Nigeria's agriculture, communications and service sectors are enjoying healthy growth.

Nigeria has been Africa's biggest drawer of direct foreign investment despite myriad woes, from massive corruption and oil thefts costing the country some $20 million a day to an Islamic uprising in the northeast that has killed more than 1,200 people so far this year, to a paralytic electricity supply that keeps businesses dependent on diesel-run generators.

Finance Minister Ngozi Ikonjo-Iweala told a news conference Sunday that the new data makes Nigeria the 26th largest economy in the world and raises its per capita income to $2,688, making it No. 121 in the world, up from No. 135.

That is still feeble compared to South Africa's $7,336 for its population of 48 million. South Africa, bedeviled by mining strikes, violent protests over services and a lackluster performance that has kept annual growth at around 3.5 percent, still has infrastructure unrivaled on the continent, most notably a power sector that generates 10 times more electricity than Nigeria.

Nigeria's revised figures will lower its much-vaunted growth rate of 7 percent but also will decrease an already low debt to GDP ratio of 21 percent, which should lower interest rates should the government want to borrow more, economists said.

Ikonjo-Iweala blamed decades of military rule for the delay in repositioning Nigeria's economy, but the country is not alone. Ghana's economy jumped by 60 percent when it recalculated its goods and services production in 2012, and Kenya and Zambia are considering the same.

Ikonjo-Iweala has said that Nigeria's economy needs to grow at about 10 percent to address massive poverty and youth unemployment. Government statistics say unemployment increased from 12.7 percent in 2007 to 23.9 percent in 2011; the World Bank says unemployment among young Nigerians stands at 38 percent but analysts say it is as high as 80 percent in many parts of the country.

Financial analyst Bismarck Rewane called the revisions "a vanity. The Nigerian population is not better off tomorrow because of that announcement. It doesn't put more money in the bank, more food in their stomach. It changes nothing."

Nigerians took to social networks to share their feelings. "So Nigeria has now supplanted South Africa as Africa's largest economy. But I've not had light (electricity) for seven days, so it means nothing to me," said one tweet.

Another commented: "Nigeria is Africa's biggest economy - on paper. So technically, I'm rich in theory."

Rubbish. Per capita I'd the main thing. If i have 1 billion for myself, am I not richer than someone who has 5 billion an dias to share with 1000 people. Hence the poverty is still high. To beat SA, we need to start doing campaigns to begin to encourage family planning and have power and security to attract meaningful foreign investment to increase income. Easier said than done.

The question is, how does this data relate in practical terms to the lives of Nigerians? So our per capita income is over 2000 USD(that's like 350000 naira per nigerian), and if i'm to understand what 'per capita income' means, how come the minimum wage for a civil servant still stand at 18000 naira(I stand to be corrected). Is the minimum wage not supposed to be a reflection of the county's per capita income?... So what do they do with all this revenue? Save it for rainy day? While Nigerians languish in poverty and clueless-ness?
All my life, I have been taught that a developed economy or a rich country is that economy /country, that can conveniently cater for a large percentage of its population.. The reverse is the case in this country.. So, this statistic should be 'biggest economy in terms of revenue' and not quality.
Therefore, if the Finance minister and the government wanted to be proud of this information, they shouldn't at all.. They are still failures as far as i'm concerned

China is d 2nd biggest economy in d world but is still among d 5 top countries wit highest poverty rate. India is 9th in terms of GDP and still has poor people more than Nig doe. Why can't most of us understand the difference b/w economic growth and development? Which one comes first? Wot we re experiencing is economic growth. It has nothing to do with HDI(human development index). I don't know we find it interseting to insult our dear nation. China is d biggest economy in Asia but has a far lesser per capita compared to Japan, Qatar, Singapore even UAE. Dat our per capita is lower than south Africa's is simply NCOs of our population. Per capita is GDP divided by a countries population

U shld realise that countries like China and India face the same problem of extreme poverty despite their economic progress. The IMF doesn't even consider these countries as developed countries. With hard work and dedication, we wld surely soar high and make Nigeria great. We may not be where we want to be right now, but surely, we are not where we used to be yesterday. Cheers

Most countries of the world if not all still borrow money to run their countries (The USA being the greatest debtor of all time). Also, Check all the businesses in the stock markets of the world and you will see they usually have borrowed money as part of their liabilities. So it's not actually a sign of 'backwardness' or under development to do so. What we shld be concerned abt is if d borrowed money is put to gud use. Peace

The recalculated economy has no positive impact on the current unemployment figure, electricity supply, interest rates, Dollar exchange rate among other things.

This doesn't in anyway add value to the masses.

A typical example of the painting of a Lion, it can't bite!

Also points to a fact, that we have more wasted opportunities to improve our economy.

The exercise simply shows that the Nigerian economy has diversified somewhat. But as we all know, Nigeria is still an extremely poor and unequal country, with the majority of people struggling to obtain basic necessities. Nigerians... So, someone who gives a different opinion from you is oversabi? We are the largest economy in Africa and by the year 2020 we will be among the twenty largest in the world if only we can create more jobs. We need to create about 500,000 new jobs each year. Which we can do through Agriculture. Our celebrities are leading the campaign by going into Agriculture. You can go into Agriculture too! We can also create so many jobs by supporting small and medium scale enterprises. You and a couple of friends can start a business selling CD's out of the trunk of your car and in 5 years you caan be a major distributor. There are government programs like YOUWIN that you can apply to for support. Try it first before saying it won't work.

So, you see, this announcement will make investors come into Nollywood! And they're coming already. We are collaborating with Hollywood in so many ways already. D'you know how many new jobs are being created there? Investors are coming into our music industry as well. We have seen them in our power sector and in 2 years light these investors wil improve power significantly. So, saying we are the biggest economy means areas like Agric, Music, Movies, Telecoms, thatt were not talked about in GDP calculations are now being talked about as potential job creators.

Don't call me oversabi. Its simple enough for a child to see these things.

Why are people so ignorant? Don't comment on things you do not understand. It is sensible that the Nigerian economy is the largest in Africa; however, people here cannot differentiate between GDP and GDP PER CAPITA. All you are complaining about is reflected in GDP PER CAPITA. Just like China, Nigeria has high GDP but low GDP PER CAPITA (relative). In layman's terms, this roughly translates to high economic activity but low standard of living. Educate yourself before you speak!

Cars are made and exported in addition despite having a much smaller population they consume more electricity than us(Nigerian).this is a reflection of how industrialized their country is.So this largest economy shit which i believe is just propaganda is super false.

Anonymous said...

A lot of the comments here reflect what is wrong with Nigeria. We sit and moan and speak with confidence about concepts we have not made the effort to understand. Thank God some people here have tried to clarify things.

If I were a foreigner reading some of the negative comments, I would be led to believe that Nigeria is a cesspool with nothing good in it and that is a big lie.

There are positive changes happening in Nigeria, albeit on the slow side. Corruption and lack of sincerity at all levels is our biggest headache. Take care of those two and we will all see how Nigeria will be transformed almost overnight. Moving from third world status to first world is not rocket science; it only requires visionary and honest leadership and followers that thirst for good things.

How many of us on this thread have ever stood firmly for any cause in Nigeria? How many of us have ever left the comfort of our homes to join in any organised protest against corruption or any other ill in Nigeria? How many of us have made an effort to do the right thing even when it hurts us to do so? How many of us still throw rubbish from the windows of moving vehicles? How many of us still cheat our employers / employees? How many of us are going to vote in 2015 for people we believe actually have the interest of Nigeria at heart and not based on religious, tribal, or some other sentiment? How many of us do not make the effort to keep our car documentation correct and then gladly give bribes to the police, FRSC and LASTMA? How many of us get involved in illegal and unethical business deals instead of running clean businesses? I could go on and on.

Let's stop complaining so much and start taking action to build the Nigeria we need.

The news on the growth in our GDP is good. We should build on that to improve livelihoods. Start from your little corner by speaking up against the corruption and evils that plague our society. Educate those you can about the damage we do to ourselves when we sell our votes. Support civil society organisations that are fighting for improvements in our society. And come 2015, vote with your brains and not just your heart and emotions alone.
