FG ordered to pay families of Apo killing N10million each

On Friday Sept. 20th, military men stormed an uncompleted building behind Legislator’s Quarters in Apo, Abuja and shot dead 8 people. (Read story here).

Now the families of all 8 victims are to be paid N10m each by the Federal Government as damages, while the 11 people who sustained various injuries during the attack are to be awarded N5m each.

The Nigerian military had launched an attack on the building, suspecting it to be a hideout for Boko Haram members. According to the National Human Rights Commission, the Federal Government and security agents have till date not been able to substantiate their claim that the people found in the building had ties with Boko Haram, causing the NHRC to award them the victim's families damages.

Chidi Odinkalu, who presided over the panel of enquiry into the killing of some squatters in a residence in Apo by security operatives, announced this at the public presentation of the panel’s report in Abuja.
"Having investigated the complaint, heard all the parties and examined the relevant laws, there is no credible evidence to show that the victims were members of Boko Haram. The self defense asserted by the respondents was not supported by facts and the application of lethal force was disproportionate and the killing of the eight persons and injuries to 11 others were unlawful”, he said.
The Federal Government was given 30 days counting from yesterday April 7th to pay the damages and provide proof to the registry of the NHRC

I argued it then, how could u engage to kill armless citizens based on mere suspicion. The act by the SSS was so crude. The law states you are innocent until proved otherwise, but in this situation reverse was the case.
Waiting to hear what Marylin Ogar has to say about this recent development.

This is such a stupid country!!!!! Sometimes I wonder how we are so smart and so dumb at the same time. So 8 people get killed and many more wounded and since u can't corroborate the fabricated tales by moonlight told by the military men involved..you decide to award the victims families public funds instead of launching a full scale investigation that would actually determine what happened and prevent it from happening again. In other word..u have essentially bought their silence cos no one in this sort of poverty stricken condition would want to push further for justice after receiving 10m..instead they will thank their dead relatives for being the sacrificial lambs for their own progress. Fellow Nigerians...I really don't want to say this..but it appears we are doomed..we actually are. we live like savages with no respect whatsoever for rule of law or human life for that matter, just Becos the lord has deemed it fit to bless us with a "currently trending" natural resource. Well..my fellow Nigerians..let me school you on the situation of things now and how it will be later. The reason Oil is referred to as "Fossil fuel" is Becos it's made up of fossilized remains of animal and plant matter that form over the course of a couple million years. There was no use for this resource until about 100 years ago when major exploration began. Since then..we have been going at it hard and what smart countries are doing is using the proceeds to better themselves while it lasts. A dry hole refers to a previously explored location where oil no longer exists. So we need a couple million more years of recovery. The reason for this pseudo-lecture I'm giving is for people to realize that this natural resource we have become so dependent on has highly diminishing characteristics. What happens when the oil runs out..and this sham of a nigeria is the best we could do? What do we do then people. People are being killed daily..no security, healthcare, infrastructure, education, or transportation..and we continue to be satisfied by peanuts thrown our way in the face of grave injustice. May the souls of the innocent departed rest in peace. As for justice..we commit all evil doers to the lords hands. As for Nigerians..the time is now. Reject what is wrong..embrace what is right.

This is wat happens wen you shot first and ask questions later...unfortunately 10 million can't bring back a life and 5 million may not wipe memory of how d sustained injuries came to be.
