"I am going nowhere" Yayha Jammeh says in reaction to Adama Barrow's swearing in

Yahya Jammeh has adamantly refused to step down as the president of the Gambia, even after the swearing-in of his successor, Adama Barrow. Gambia's information minister, Sidie Njie, informed BBC that Yahyah Jammeh has no intention of leaving office. Umaru Fofana, a BBC journalist revealed this in a tweet.

"Just interviewed #Gambia's information minister Sidie Njie. He says President Jammeh is going nowhere. #BBCAfrica." Fofana tweeted.

Yahyeh Jammeh who wielded power for 22 years and enjoyed the support of top officials of The Gambia has been deserted by most, including by The Gambia's army chief, Ousman Badjie, who was seen celebrating Adama's swearing in yesterday. Jammeh's Vice , Isatou Njie Saidy, together with the majority of his cabinet members, has also resigned. In spite of these and of the pressure from ECOWAS and the African Union, Jammeh has remained adamant.

It is also rumored that his wife and children have also deserted him and fled from Banjul, but this has not deterred Jammeh who soon after, to assert his position in the country, went on a sacking spree and sacked the rest of his cabinet following mass resignations.

This is the worst shame to democracy in not only Gambia, but Africa as a continent. I say this much because in Africa you have leaders who have stayed longer than Jammeh. Paul Biya of Cameroon has been in seat since 1982, Mugabe the unrepentant nonagenarian has retained power in Zimbabwe by means other than constitutional. We still have Obiang Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, Denis Sassou Ngueso of Congo Brazzavile, El Bashir of Sudan, Paul Kagame of Rwanda et al. All these personalities are members of and have each a seat at the AU. What moral leverage do these sit tight, power drunk and presidents for life have over Jammeh's volte face?

Regrettably, some African leaders enjoy democracy of patrimony and inheritance. These include: Ali Bongo of Gabon; Faure Gnassingbe Eyadema of Togo and Joseph Kabila all of who inherited power upon the demise of their fathers.

While I agree we don't have an idilly democracy the world all over, I firmly am of the view that AU and ECOWAS have more to do in strengthening democracy in Africa if not more Gambias are cooking in African political pots. Many leaders are devious as to conjure up constitutional amendment when their electoral chances appear narrow like Nkurunziza and Umar Guelle once did. Africa, not Gambia alone needs true democracy. May God help us!
