Photo: Girl allegedly duped inside banking hall in Lagos

The girl pictured above and identified as Ruqayyat said she was duped of N14,000 inside a banking hall in Lagos on Wednesday June 17th. According to her story, she said she went into a banking hall along Opebi road, Lagos to pay N14, 000 when she was approached by a man dressed in a suit pretending to be working at the bank.

She said the man asked her to give him the money she wanted to deposit and her filled deposit slip so he can facilitate the process quickly. She said the man also asked her if she had filled her bank verification number BVN form which ends this month. When she replied no, the man gave her a form to fill and then proceeded to help her pay her money at the teller point.

Done with filling the BVN form, Ruqayatt said she looked up to give the man the form and also find out if he'd paid her money but he was no where in the banking hall.

Realizing what happened, Ruqayyat began crying. She said the money was meant for her boss who she'd just started working with less than two weeks ago
"The money belongs to my boss. I have just been employed two weeks ago and I don’t know where to get a refund for her,” she said sobbingly. Many bank customers were in disbelief about Rukayat’s story, while a bank security guard ordered her out of the hall" - she told Newsbreak

This has been happening for sometime in the Banking system, it happened to a junior colleague of mine 2 years ago, he was asked alongside some other people that those whose deposit is above 100k should fill the teller and submit , after doing that the person went into the supposed Bilk room and didnt come out again. When my company decided to take it up the Police said the Guy is the Fraudster and should be arrested. Happened at GTB Opebi to be precise, i don't know why appropriate security measures haven't been put in place since then. GTB is becoming something else!

This VERY LIKELY to be true. Exactly the same thing happened to me at Intercontinental bank 12years ago. The Intercontinental Bank on Toying street to be precise. I asked where the bulk room was and I was told to go upstairs, I met a well-dressed man and asked him where I could make a deposit, he asked if I wanted to make a deposit and I said yes, he asked for the money and the deposit slip and asked me to sit in a chair and wait for him. I was actually pleased at the "supposed excellent customer service". Until a staff that saw me talking to the guy came to tell me that the person was not a staff of the bank. I caused so much scene this got to the bank manager and we viewed the CCTV and saw that the man had run out of the banking hall. The bank said since they did not see the actual event as there was no CCTV camera upstairs there was nothing the bank could do about it. I cried so much that day, because my brother-in-law just gave me the money to take back to school. I closed my account with the bank immediately because I was so angry and bitter.

Ifeanyi said...

Nigerian security is terrible. Did the bank arrange the duping and hide the culprit inside the bank. I'm saying this because there is no way on earth a woman who claimed to have experienced such terrible incident should be thrown out by Guard. They have all the surveillances needed in carry out investigations. It is unfair that someone got robbed inside bank and the bank didn't fight for it but would like to involve Nigerian police and military if they got robbed.

Ghadaffi said...

Instead of the stupid bank staff walking her out, they were supposed to check their CCTV footage to even try to ascertain if she was saying the truth.

Anonymous said...

Hmm...we learn everyday

Anonymous said...

Na wao. I think the bank didn't handle d issue well. What about the CCTVs inside the banking hall? The bank should have checked the CCTV to ascertain d legitimacy of her claim. This can't happen in any American bank. Sorry Nija people.

One of the reasons why Nigeria will never move forward...there was a complaint, the best way to approach the issue is to properly investigate her case rather than walk her out.until when will Nigeria start looking into matters rather than run away from it...It's such a pity dear, God will surely prove Himself that your boss won't sack you, just have faith nnugo!

Banks do have "staff" within the banking hall asking people to fill BVN forms. I have seen this myself even in a Victoria Island branch of a big bank. The Security man had no right to send her out and should be reprimanded. Having been admitted into the bank in the first place, she was entitled to be treated with dignity. Her matter should be investigated by the bank's security department .

Stan said...

every banking hall must have an operational cctv system by law. Her boss must file a complaint at the bank headquarters to see the cctv. Lawyers in the U.S beg for cases like these.

He said I should remain on the queue while he goes to pay the money. Trust me, I quickly followed him to the counter.
