How Lagos nursing mother got infected with Ebola virus - doctor

A medical doctor has described how a nursing mother who is one of the confirmed cases of the Ebola virus in Lagos contracted the disease while attending her antenatal care at First Consultant Hospital in Obalende, Lagos where the first victim of Ebola virus in Nigeria, Patrick Sawyerr, died. The lady was confirmed to have the deadly disease after testing positive at the NNPC staff clinic on Muri Okunola street in the Victoria Island area of Lagos.

Speaking anonymously with Punch, the doctor said;
'The lady attended ante-natal at First Consultant prior to the arrival of the Liberian, Mr. Patrick Sawyer. She was delivered of her baby at the hospital after which she was discharged. A few weeks later, Mr. Sawyer came around and was attended to by health workers. He was first treated for malaria, then typhoid, before there was high index of suspicion. He tested positive for Ebola and died. Then the woman, who gave birth at the hospital came back to the hospital for her baby’s immunization. The nurses who attended to Sawyer also attended to her. When she visited the place again last week, she discovered the place had been shut down for proper fumigation as a means of control against Ebola.” he said. Continue...
Seeing that the hospital has been shut down, the lady who had started showing signs of fever proceeded to the NNPC staff clinic which was close by.
'She was first treated for Malaria. However, after some medical tests, there was a high suspicion of Ebola haemorrhagic fever. On Friday, the Lagos State’s emergency response team on Ebola virus came around and took her to the Infectious Diseases Hospital,” he added.
The management of the hospital after confirming she had the deadly virus immediately shut down the hospital indefinitely.
Confirming the doctor's report, the Medical Officer of Health, Iru-Victoria Island Local Council Development Area, Dr. Wale Akeredolu, said the woman's baby has been quarantined and is under surveillance
“The baby has also been quarantined to see if after the incubation period of two to 21 days, she would manifest the symptoms of Ebola.” he said

Ebola is not HIV that people should keep a secret of. This woman denied ever being to First Consult, and stuck to her lies as her case grew worse. It was only after she tested positive for Ebola and nurse confronted her that records showed that she had given birth at First consult and was there while Patrick Sawyer was also admitted there.

Too many inconsistencies. Too many questions to be answered. I thought the guy died at the airport so how could he have been treated for Malaria and typhoid??? If he was immediately diagnosed as having Ebola, shouldn't the health workers who immediately treated him be quarantined????? even if it was just a suspicion shouldn't they still have been quarantined. Its such a pity.

Awww........ Quite touching. So unfortunate. Sorry for the infection.

I bloody hope those nurses where also quarantined, why weren't they kept in isolation immediately after Patrick sawyer dieath, instead of treating other patients and then transferring Ebola to them, who knows how many unsuspecting people they've touched with their festering hands. Now a new born baby is going to need all prayers

My question is how do you quarantine a new born! Won't he or she be nursed be chnged be cared for? And if so whose doing the caring?beggining to feel sawyer was planted in Nigeria he was said to have even gone as far as urinated all over the hospital staff! And he knew he had ebola as in the airport in monrovia he did not allow anyone touch him yet he sat next to Nigerians on the plane, ansd watch as he was being treated for typhoid and malaria unquarantined and said NOTHING!Nigeria deals with more than Ebola everyday this too shall pass!

very sad and unfortunate and most tragically with a new baby!

what scares me is that despite this been a secondary contact, she still caught the virus. Except if the Nurse who treated sawyer didn't wash up soon as she'd attended to him.

U r so inhuman, so d nurses hv festering hands nw?

Anonymous said...

This woman lied to nnpc staff that she never came near first consultant. That was why there wasn't a rapid response at first. She deceived everyone till it was obvious it was Ebola. She jeopardized the lives of those health workers because of her bogus lie. Very selfish woman!

ary said...

See how easily this can be spread! Everybody is susceptible to this disease and that's the scary part, cos like AIDS e no go dey show for face!

Anon 6.53pm, festering hands no be abuse. The hands r festering with the virus

Linda why did dere not mention dat she went to a hospital in gbagada dat is affiliated to NNPC Ist an d stoolin an vomiting ll not stop before dere referred her to NNPC VI? I jus hope dat gbagada hospital has been shut down oo

Unknown said...

This is so Pathetic. May God save the little Child. But my worry is if EBOLA can't be contracted until the patient or carrier starts to break down and show feverish signs, then how come the Nurses or midwives were still healthy enough to take care of the Nursing Mother. And I thought they said the Nurses were immediately quarantined following the death of Patrick Sawyer. So many questions to be answered. Oh God hear our prayers in this country.

So sad

Anonymous said...

its an unfortunate incidence our prayers goes out to d baby expecially.pple shud try n go for test wen they think they arent alrite it will really go a lng way to curb the spread

Anonymous said...

People who have to be quarantined are many. All the patients who were at First Consultants from the very first day Sawyer was admitted to the day he died, all their family members, even some visitors; doctors and nurses and their family members; this woman and her household, those who have been visiting her in the past week, NNPC staff who attended to her and their families, patients who attended NNPC clinic while she was there. Wahala too plenty for this Ebola matter. What makes it worse is that instead of people meeting the authorities to test them regularly, they prefer to hide. Why?

Anonymous said...

I dont believe the story...how can d nurses who were not showing any signs become infective and they dont touch people when they are giving immunizations and they always wear gloves when giving injections.

Anonymous said...

Hope humanity is not getting close to extinction, nigeria to be precise...oh Lord God help us,forgive us our sins nd do nt let us perish.

Anonymous said...

Wat re u talking about...re u here with us at all?

Anonymous said...

I tot dy said ebola cn only b transferred at point of illness...does it mean that this nurse was critically ill n still came to work to attend to this woman... more research needs to be done. we still don' t ve real facts concerning this deadly ebola

Anonymous said...

God please save our country

Anonymous said...

His name will forever be associated with everything bad and terrible. Is he honestly knew he had the virus before travelling, he will never find peace ijn. S

Anonymous said...

The Nurses hands must have been contaminated from Sawyers body fluids which they passed on to the mother. Nurses will still well so infection was not from them. Wearing gloves that are not sterile could also be contaminated. I'm sure their gloves were not sterile.

Mumu u are dead just still living u are not alive at all see ur high level of ignorance and deaftness to news

Anonymous said...

I believe the nurse attended to late sawyer and the woman at the same period. And by then they didn't know sawyer had ebola

Anonymous said...

It means that the nurses had Sawyer's Ebola viruses on their hands, uniform, etc. They may not have washed their hands or after wiping their unwashed hands on their uniform, the woman held the nurse and her uniform and used the hand to pick her nose or wipe her eyes. Another thing, please nurses, after using that your thermometer to check that patient temperature, wipe it clean with spirit or whatever before you go to the next person. Don't just wave it in the air and go on to the next patient's armpit. It is irritating.

See what Sahara reporters has about Sawyer leaving his country. Liberia send dat man come; if e neva enter Lagos the world nor go too reason d Ebola.

Patrick sawyer ROT in hell for infecting my people. Amen!

Anonymous said...

Hmmmmmm.......I sure hope our govt is not hiding vital info on dis 'thing' in order not to cause hysteria. How could d poor woman have become infected by a nurse who was still at an 'incubation stage' and not "gravely ill"? Abi, she exchange body fluid with the nurse?

Anonymous said...

But shit does happen in life sha! Imagine carrying a baby for 9mths, delivering a healthy baby....and then just to go for 'routine immunization' go enter dis kain wahala!!! Lord, pls have mercy on dis woman and her baby....and her husband.....and her neighbours...and her housegirl...and the housegirl's boyfriends?....and d mai-guard ....and d driver who took her to d hosp.... and.....good Lord, just have mercy!

I sincerely believe that proper information is to be given to the populace concerning the patients and events that led to their contracting the diseases. I remember sending broadcasts on my mobile intimating people on the need to get sanitizers that contain at least 60 percent alcohol or just use soap and water especially after using all this facilities like ATM'S, Cabs e.t.c available to the public because my research shows that WHO are not even certain of the exact way the virus spreads; they only know the most common ways. For example, they have said once that Ebola cannot spread from countries that don't share borders because the victim would have expired before making such travel; it wasn't until the Nigerian case that this claim was reversed. We all need to practise frequent hand washing, or bleach diluted with water can also b used in place of sanitizers as bleach is active against viruses. And we all need to pray too, that God would cause the Cure of Ebola to be found and effective. And finally, it's important that people are educated that Ebola is not a death sentence. So many people have overcome Ebola. The key to overcoming it is surrendering onesself early so that the victim can start fighing with antibiotics as early as possible. We should try to read about the survivors of the Ebola Virus. Understanding this who go a long way to help victims surrender themselves for medical help asap. We pray that this virus would not eat deep into our country and that God would take charge of victims who have been diagnosed of this virus worldwide. Most especially, we pray for a vaccine.

WONDERING WHY OUR HEALTH WORKERS CANT PRACTICE SIMPLE HYGIENE TIP BY WASHING THEIR HANDS AFTER ATTENDING TO A PATIENT , OR USE A GLOVE PER PATIENT.

AS FOR SAWYER......... GOD LET YOUR MERCY PREVAIL OVER JUDGEMENT IN THIS NATION AND HEAL OUR LAND ...AMEN

Anonymous said...

May the Good God have mercy on her

So u mean to visit hospital nowadays is a problem! Hmmmmmm God save us oops

I dont understand what Liberias apology will do at this point. People let also practice simple hygiene of washing hands and bathing.Discourage nose poking with hands.

I was a patient at First Consultant for antenatal. God saved me that i did not go that week. The nurses there do not use gloves to administer injections and stick their dirty thermometer in our mouths, after using only tap water and tissue to clean it. I'm quite disgusted now, thinking about it. God pls heal those infected and protect those who aren't. It's a tragedy all thru
