Late MKO Abiola's family want him declared ex president of Nigeria

The family of late MKO Abiola and some South West Governors yesterday appealed to the Federal Government to officially declare the late businessman and politician, a former president of Nigeria.

The family said recognizing him as an ex president is the best way to immortalize the acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, because according to them, 'Abiola offered himself as the sacrificial lamb for democracy to take roots in Nigeria'.

How can they declare him ex-president when he never was? Wo, ko possible jor! Abi, se o possible?

you see why I said our president is clueless, apparently, renaming Unilag was not a big deal to d Abiolas, out of many choices - they wld v told d bowler hat man what they wld v preferred, f he had consulted all stakeholders, but because he thought he's got d power he went ahead to mess up a whole system, now over to u, presido, whats ur take? and remember all d benefits that goes to all d ex-thieving presidents must be accorded to Abiola posthumously too...mscheew

Eya Ayambem said...

They do have a point there o, but There will be no documents on his period in office. The annulment did not give him a chance to take the seat, sign any document or celebrate even a day in office.
For history purposes, the records will only stop at where he won, and then continue from the annulment to imprisonment and death.

This is actually a way to immortalize MKO, but...

Utmost appreciate and admiration of MKO! He was an absolute philanthropist with a great heart. While, he DID win the election and SHOULD have sat in the seat of presidency, he unfortunately was NEVER given his well deserved chance. As such, he was NEVER the president. He is therefore not the ex-president and shouldn't be referred to as so. However, I would appreciate if they did refer to him as "1993 PRESIDENTAL ELECTION WINNER"…THEY SHOULD OPENLY STATE THAT HE DID INDEED WIN THE ELECTION BUT WAS ROBBED OF THE CHANCE TO PERFORM HIS ROLE. But referring to him as ex-president is slightly ludicrous and very false.

God bless

So vain a thought! Ex-president from what year to when na?

i am not averse to MKO being immortalised, but the fact remains that he was never president so its actually not reasonable for his family and other south-west politicians to demand that he now be declared president. it just does not make any sense.

Anonymous said...

We appreciate the mortal price paid by MKO in order for us to enjoy the fruits of democracy. Having said that, the family and other agitators of immortalizing MKO should bear in mind that there are limitations to demands that can be made.

You do not declare one ex-president when the individual has not gone through all the tenets required by law to be a president first. I mean all the tenets. Yes there is no doubt that he won the election and that's where it ends.

I was not in this country during this period of time but it is my recollection that he was not officially declared the winner. And let assume for the sake of argument that he's declared the winner, he was in no time sworn in as the president of the country.

If he was never sworn in, he did not meet the requirement by law to be called a president and therefore, the ex-president thing is not legally possible. Unless the Fedreal Government will posthumorsely swear him in as the president of the country then he can be an ex-president.

Am not even sure if the government can do that even if they'd wanted to because you have to be able to take the oath of office to be sworn in as the president.

So that request by the family members or other for it is gone a little too far.

Anonymous said...

they must be kidding.

Anonymous said...

Does anybody use common sense anymore in Nigeria?! Well we can't act too surprised with all the crazy stuff happening without even trying to cover their trails.

dmj said...

Had the president not renamed UNILAG after MKO will they have the nerve to push for this?...
Why did they not bother past governments with this?
He won the elections ..no doubt. that makes him President-elect, not president.
Do we not have enough issues on our hands in Nigeria?....this is a non-issue-trivial..
if the family or whosoever wants more memorials they should be sensible in their suggestions.

I wonder where this is coming from. The justification for this is not very tight.

I do not believe that the results of that election was ever declared officially. So, I think that is actually where to start from. Let the elections be declared and he Abiola be declared subsequently and post-humously as the winner of the 1992 or was it 93 election.

After this, he can possibly be recognized as a past President.

As a person I love Abiola. It will be difficult to find such a detribalised and philantropic person ever again in Nigeria. A man whose goodness touched the lives of millions.

Other than that his association with respective military juntas helped and corruptly filled his pockets with lucrative contracts that eventually made him one of the if not the richest man in Africa. The late Fela sang about this. Unfortunately for MKO, it was his relationship with the military that finally did him in.

A Great Man MKO, our Man. But as for Ex-Presdent? That will be asking for too much. Jona, come see wetin u don cause o!

Abiola was just part of a process for the restoration of democracy. There are a thousand and one people who without their efforts, sweat and blood, we won't be talking about Nigeria, let alone democracy or even associating democracy with nigeria.

While we praise Abiola for his selflessness, we as a country must also not forget the price paid by not so popular figures. How many of the corpers that died in the last elections are ever remembered? How many have streets/schools named after them? How many of the people who worked behind pulling the strings for Abiola's victory are remembered? Can we really talk about Abiola without mentioning Tofa? If Tofa didn't concede defeat and went to court like politicians do now, would we be talking of Abiola winning elections?

Abiola's family should stop being selfish but act like their patriotic father(RIP) and push for the immortalising of the corpers who gave their lifes and have no one to fight their cause.

If FG are looking for who to immortalise, they should do it for the late Fajuyi, because Jesus says greater love hath no man than he that would lay his life for his friend.

who is Abiola?? the man that built his wealth from stolen Government fund. What did Abiola do for Nigeria?? Lets tell ourselves the truth of these man. Abiola was a friend to the likes of Babangida, Abacha and many other military dictators. He only got the bad end, something Nigerians had been getting for longer, when his relationship with them went sour. He Wined and dined with corrupt military to get there. His death, he met while fighting for himself, not for you,or me, or Nigeria. He died at the hands on those he chose over the Nigerian people for decades. Please if i may ask…?? what year did he took oath of office?? when was his tenue?? from what year to year did he save nigeria…?? what is the name of the chief justice that sworn him inn? what are the names of this people in his term, SSG, SENATE PRESIDENT and SPEAKER HOUSE OF REP. In which presidential villa was he living?? I think any lawyer that will stand out to defend this family in court over this will surely lose his NBA license cos he too do not know his country constitution. Why didn't they ask Obasanjo to declared him Ex-president??The history will only tell where he won, the annulment to imprisonment and death. Maybe next time they will still demand for Nigeria to be renamed ti his name. Nonsense!!!

Yes, we all know the election was rigged and there was a possibility that he won. Yes, he was an example of how a president should act but accepting the title from a president who doesn't even know what democracy is will only make him roll in his grave. He died an honorable man. Let not not dishonor him. Giving him this title would erase everything he stood for (justice, integrity and dignity) while he was alive. His family should think very carefully about this.

See Mko won but was never sworn in so they should puuuuleeeez stuff it.

My Dad received enuff bullets during the Biafrian war, survived it and yet didnt rant for even a street but worked hard privately and made a name.

So Abiola's kids should go work hard and name there businesses MANIG. Mtchwwww. The way they are going abt this rubbish, i wonder if their Dad really deserved to be president. Stop making a ridicule of you Dad pls.

Did M.K.O Abiola take an Oath? The answer is left to us. These people should just forget about this issue. This are material things of this world. Hereafter is worth working ƒor. After αll, things have been done to immortalise him.

I see only greed in the mind of people agitating for MKO to be declared ex-president. This shows naturally the greed, insatiable and ungrateful hearts of the Abiola's family. I'm so disappointed that as sane and educated as they are, they are not aware of agitations can be possible to implement. It shows clearly that they are after material things to gain from Nigeria government and not to promote the ideals of democracy for which their father believed.
