Dimeji Bankole on NASS Election

The Speaker of the House of Representatives,  Rt. Hon. Dimeji Bankole has reacted to the outcome of the 2011 National Assembly election conducted yesterday saying that outcome on the whole reflected the wishes of the people in our national quest to enshrine an enduring democracy for our nation.

While commending the general peaceful nature of the election, particularly in his constituency and Ogun state, Bankole thanked the electorate for trooping out en-mass to vote  for candidates of their choices as representatives and senators at the National Assembly stressing that their action after the initial hiccups exercise demonstrates an abiding faith in democracy as an acceptable and veritable path for the development of our nation.

Bankole congratulated all the winners in the parliamentary election for their victory noting that losers should take their losses in good faith as in any such exercise there must be winners and losers.
“For me the race was not a life and death duel. Of more importance is building, maintaining and developing our democratic institution and processes as a means towards true national development and greatness”  he stated.

The Speaker commended the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the young men and women of National Youth Service Corps for successfully kick starting the election.

Bankole however, condemned all those bent on scuttling the electoral process through violence, particularly  through bombings, saying no nation has ever made progress through such means in addressing the challenges of  national development.

That's how a true democratic should behave. Olagunloye Oyinlola also lost in the NASS Election in Osun State and has equally congratulated the winner in his senatorial constituency. Congrats to INEC, congrats to Nigerians. This is the dawn of a new era.

After reading this letter, I am almost inclined to feel sorry for the Honourable Dimeji Bankole but then I remember he lost fair and square. Thank you Dimeji, for your services to the nation and best of luck with your new ventures.

Well done to him. This is the Dimeji of old before he got power drunk when he became the Speaker of the House.

Mr Bankole has brought the spirit of sportmanship into politics, and that's how it should be. He realized it's only a game, which didn't go his way this time around. All the same, that comment was commendable. Bankole, better luck next time. And for JEGA and GEJA (Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Azikiwe), thanks for delivering on your promise of a credible election. We hope April 16th and 26th wont be different.
