Lionel Messi in Gabon, chauffeur driven by the country's president (photos)

Four-time world player of the year, Lionel Messi was hosted in Gabon on Saturday July 18th by the country's President, Ali Bongo, for the brick laying of their new 22,000 seat stadium. He was  chauffeur driven by the president himself around the streets of Libreville.

Messi officially started the building process at the Port-Gentil stadium, which will host Africa Cup of Nations matches in 2017. He came dressed in a casual pair of denim shorts and t-shirt
"When I was in Barcelona a few years ago, I met Messi who had told me that he would come to visit me in Libreville" said the Gabon president. "It's a promise he made me. He is a man of honour who just kept his word.".
There are reports that he was paid 3.5m Euros by Ali Bongo to make the appearance and it's causing serious wahala in the country. Gabonese are angry about the obscene amount and say their president belittled himself by driving Messi around. He was there for just one day. More photos after the cut..

Wearing shorts and a tee shirt. Fab. Yet the rest of them are sweating in their suits.

"France Football claim that the entire charade was arranged by Messi’s former teammate Samuel Eto’o, who enjoys a close relationship with Bongo."

Congrat to the Gabonese, its not easy for messi to visit them. Ali bongo well done papa! Its not a problem if you drive him around but a plus to your administration. How can a small city with just about two standard hotels host nation cups? So they will fly to PG with those small aircraft? Hmmm I think LBV should host all the matches I beg. 3.5€ na small money na even Ali can handle that alone. The money my company paid for rent I'm one of his buildings don't cover up. God bless my beautiful Gabon people.

Absolutely disgraceful!! What a shame on Gabon! If I were Gabonese, I will cringe with shame seeing these. A whole President of a country, becoming a chauffeur to a scruffily dressed individual. The good thing is that Messi was appropriately dressed for the part of a bricklayer. Big shame!

€3.5m for that? be serious. What about the poor people in the country? Messi showed little or no respect for you people. He was supposed to come for free and instead donate for the building of a stadium. Am disgraced

Baba Kupa said...

What a disgrace to Africans. €3.5m is significant considering they are building a 22000 seater stadium. It would have gone a long way. Would have respected Messi if he had come for free and donated a little something for the construction not to come and steal our resources in the name of fame? Nxaaaa.
