Imagine you graduate with a distinction from UK Uni & get offered N50k job in Nigeria

This man shared the sad reality of some individuals who travel abroad to study and come home to a salary that can barely keep you going for a week. He talked about a friend who graduated with distinction in Masters from a UK University only for him to be offered a N50,000 a month job when he came back to Nigeria. Read more of his tweet after the cut...

I believe it takes the mercy and favor of GOD. It doesn't matter if you schooled at home or abroad; your deserved job is waiting for you somewhere, you just haven't located the place..and remember tht no matter how rough ur life is, there's someone you are better than.
However..GOD's time is the best; speaking from experience..and in his time, he makes everything beautiful.

Reading this confirms my solitude.

My fiancee is an Accounting grad, works with a bank in Lagos, earns 65k/month.

I'm and engineer with Msc from Europe, working here earning 8x her sal after tax, with fortune 1000 coy.

Yet she's asking me to consider returning home, that I can get hired fast.

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fast into 50k/month???? peanut???? Impossible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad I convinced her, cos I love her. ONLY COS OF LOVE!

i always look forward to experience that one can gain rather than the salary itself.
how ever ,it was your choice to go to the UK for studies. also make a choice on working there or not and be thankful for whatever decision you come up with. some people can barely pay for their WAEC fees. #begrateful

Maybe Nigerians should consider studying in other countries if they must get a foreign degree where you can work afterwards. Stop enriching UK! They don't even give you the room to work in their country. US, Canada and Australia are obviously better.

What university did he study at? Not all universities in the UK are equal. You cannot get a 1st from universities like Kent, East London, Coventry, Hertfordshire, Middlessex etc, and expect employers in Nigeria to roll out the red carpet for you? Employers in Nigeria know the UK pure water universities. If you're gonna spend your hard earned money studying in th the UK then avoid those universities that come to hustle for students in Nigeria.

Almost everyone today goes abroad to study. the Companies we have going in this country cant use that as a criteria. They just take it that academic qualification is all the same. So please is not a criteria. So people that cant afford to do there masters abroad should earn low?

I'm with him on this 100%. I left a banking job to get a master's degree abroad. It's been three years since I came back and I cannot get a job. I even hop buses. I don't have money for the cheapest second hand car.

It does not even give my parents bragging rights. My mom is my only surviving parent and she considers me a failure and continually nags me to pay up debt's I've been unable to clear due to no regular income.

One of the worst decision I made in my life was leaving the country to UK for masters. It ruined my career path. Most of my mates are so solidly established that I cant even stand next to them. I'm just in God's hand's now waiting for a miracle. Sometimes I go to bed crying because of this huge mistake I made.

If you have a job here that pays 6 figures, please hold on to it. Foreign degrees are not worth it for almost 95% of the Nigerians who get it.

Nigerians should please not be swayed by the foreign graduation photos of all the kids of our government officials who looted this country to a halt.

Consider going abroad for school as an investment from which you expect a return.

At this point in time, it is no longer profitable for the average Nigerian to school abroad particularly UK.

Left for me, all UK institutions should be banned from coming to Nigeria to promote their degrees. They'll rob you of hard earned money and kick you out of their country when you are done.

Even obtaining basic visiting visa will be a problem afterwards. I am an example.

Mehn its hard everywhere o, both foreign masters or local BSc.

This situation is a case of they offer, and its up to you to accept, you dont force anybody to pay you what he cannot afford. Also you are not entitled to anything (not even a fat salary or a stipend) from anybody because you have an education.

This world is survival of the fittest oh.

For your landlord, switch off ya phone, trust me he cant throw away ur load without a court order.

UNILAG POST UTME 2015/2016

Dear Linda,

kindly help investigate re the above issue as i just a got a call from my daughter informing me that she has been advised to stop attending tutorial lessons in preparation for her Unilag Post utme. According to her, she was told that students who did not make 250 scores and above at JAMB should not bother to write the Unilag Post utme when the form is out as JAMB has sent out a list of candidates who scored 250 scores and above to Unilag for consideration.

Please could you help confirm the validity of this information. My daughter scored 228and Unilag is her only choice. The fact that students are only allowed to apply to only one university makes the situation really frustrating.

Unfortunately some people are still under the illusion that foreign certificates are magic wands for a lucrative job opportunity. What they fail to understand is that there are so many people out there with that same foreign certificates that work around with. They also fail to realize that acquisition of foreign certificate without good networking, connection or "long leg" that can land them a good paying job after acquiring these certificates with millions of naira is like buying a very costly SUV without plans on how to come about the money to fuel it. Spending millions of naira just to acquire foreign certificates is becoming a wrong investment to some people. It's quite pathetic.

The problem with Nigerian youths is that we are all waiting on d govt To do something for us and not what we can do for our country. As long as ur father did not build any company for u then u need to build one for ur self and ur children! If we can all be observant we will find out that the so called good jobs belong to just Abt 20% of graduates and these 20% are people who are connected. So it's a wake up call for everyone and I will also remind us that the Education system has Expired since 1979, this is d era companies beg people to work for them, they offer Cars, houses etc to graduates, but now u have to pray, fast,go to mountain, bribe and do all sorts of things to get that job. Now we are in the 21st Century, what's the in thing? I recommend a book by Robert T kiyosaki, "THE BUSINESS OF THE 21st CENTURY" then email me amakxy4u@gmail.com to explain Further. They say; he who wears the shoe, knows where it hurts the most. I have gone through all the comments and all I can say is everyone calling him ungrateful is either myopic or jealous because they can't afford a foreign degree. THE TRUTH IS THE STATE OF THINGS IN THE COUNTRY IS VERY BAD! WE NEED A CHANGE AND WE NEED IT FAST! Why should a graduate in a country such as Nigeria (The giant of Africa) be earning such a meagre salary? I weep for Nigeria! Travel out and see things for yourselves. A graduate with zero experience earns way more. We are still living in medieval times and its a shame! The entire Nigerian economy needs DIVINE CLEANSING! Nuff said!

And to Ignorant Mr Bryan Ayogu, you can graduate with Distinction in a UK Masters Degree. Next time, get your facts right!

IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO GET ANNOYED WITH LIFE, DO NOT GO TO STUDY IN UK EXCEPT YOUR PARENT IS AMONG THOSE THAT THINK THEY OWN NIGERIA. FIND A COUNTRY WHERE YOU CAN WORK AFTER SCHOOLING

Anonymous said...

You're a grade A idiot! Say it with me G-r-a-d-e A I-D-I-O-T!

Anonymous said...

Whats Godforbid?having a distinction in masters without working experience doesn't make u better than a degree holder in nigeria who can aswell deliver. Will u force an employer to lavish pay on u jst cos u schooled abroad? Hw sure is it u can do the job well.

Anonymous said...

People graduate with distinction from uk uni.

Anonymous said...

I laugh laugh laugh tire. Chai Nigeria. They will even offer a graduate 35 k per month. Witch craft.

Nigerians, it is all this your 'let us manage it' spirit that has gotten us to where we are today. They keep feeding you shit and you keep eating without complaining. That is why we never progress in this country. Too backward! Ordinary Ghana can protest unstable power supply. We would keep managing, NONSENSE! WAKE UP FROM YOUR SLUMBER PEOPLE!

May be you should write an article about this for people to read and understand since you really sinc with this situation. I don't get why people can't see beyond their noses. So many things comes to play in this scenario with different people. No matter what certificate you hold, you have to start from somewhere no matter the school and the grade except you have a godfather. Think of what you have to offer to the firm, your input, your experience before what they have to offer you. Put yourself in their shoes, if you have a firm, will you hire just because of certificate and school or let alone who is not ready to learn and only depends on his or her certificate. I use to teach, the pay was good but the most important thing was the experience I have, it's wonderful! In this same place, the caregivers are well paid too , they even go abroad for vacation, these are the caregivers not the teachers. Though the job is not secured but they started from somewhere and have learnt a lot which will help them as they move on. Speaking of abroad, UK is the easiest country to live and study, the rest have language barriers that will keep you in standstill position no matter how hard you try. Coming to North America ,to get a very good job is hard. It's no longer the old saying of you must know somebody, somebody must know you too and be ready to identify with you. With your Bsc, Msc you'll still end up doing the odd job and spinning around the table. Please people, pray and ask God for wisdom to live your life. If you have a good paying job, why leave it and go for masters abroad? Enroll in the closest school, keep working, keep making money and keep going to school. Even Obama and his wife just finished paying off their school loan, I mean while in office as the president. It's a competitive world, you have to bring something different to the table. Don't make excuse for yourself by blaming the bad government, do your best.

...Oh please, having a first class doesn't guarantee a good paying job especially if you got admission on clearance.

Nobody says you should leave a a better job in the UK or US or wherever and come back to Nigeria after your graduate or masters degree. I'm sure this guy didn't get a job there, that's why he came back to Naija. A foreign degree doesn't guarantee you a high placed job in Nigeria so go and take a seat.

It is sad, but I still believe in coming home to build. It has to start somewhere so the next generation does not inherit this mess. Somebody has to feel the pain to make it better for all in the long run. It is discouraging to think all the effort you put into getting an education and nothing to show for it yet, hold on and keep pushing forward. Graduates are having problems securing good jobs in EVERY country, it's only those who went into IT and tech who seem to be doing good. No, you may not want to do a business, but you will have to do something because with the current global climate nobody can depend on one stream of income anymore, it is better to have a few income streams. You could easily start a blog chronicling your attempt at finding employment, instead of giving Twitter free hits, you would get those hits on your own blog and it would translate to money, same thing with You Tube. You have to start somewhere. Life made you no promises when you were born, life made no promise to any of us, we just have to deal with our different situations in this world.

Times are hard but at the end its God's favour that counts. I have a Bsc from a state uni in Nigeria and I earn approx 1M naira after tax (ex other benefits) on a mthly basis working for a multinational..l'd say its the grace of God only that landed me this job

Unknown said...

Look at how you have embarrassed yourself Bryan

Anonymous said...

I am not surprised at all. I studied in the UK and graduated 2008. So excited to have finshed a Masters degree in Strategic Information Technology Management with a good grade not distinction though, I came back to Nigeria to look for job. My people, after searching for jobs and sending series of applications for over 8months the only interview and offer I got was 80K/month and I had to work 11hrs/day. Saturday included. I turned down the offer right there and then and gave up on my country. I took my docs and moved to Canada 4 months after and my story changed for good. It's so sad paying that much on education and after you get peanuts. Nigerians employeers even discriminate in their own country against fellow Nigerians. So sad our governement needs to act fast.

You obviously missed the point.....!!! :-)

The way out is to become so good at whatever you do so that it becomes extremely hard to ignore you. The road to success is always rocky.

Did u say d UK dont have polytechnics & dont have distinctions for masters programmes?

Dis is an example of who we call an arrogant dumbfuck.

God bless you .You enter class

I know a nigga doing that course in same school, I just pity for him...he left his good job to go and do masters and he is forming for everyone. We have all been to UK to study, there is nothing there

Calm down now.....dont sound pained. The guy is only tryin to emphasize on d alarming rate of unemployment n underemployment....n just tryin to say that even for those goin to well equipped unis.....hmm it only takes God....he never said schoolin abroad guarantees u a one million naira pay

Anonymous said...

You are quite ignorant I must say, can you compare the standard of education in the UK to any university in Nigeria??? And for the fact the person earned a distinction do you even have an inkling of what it takes? The physical and psychological strain required? Please don't embarrass yourself making stupid a** comments and belittling his hard work. Let me even hear you say that a graduate with first class degree from even the worst university in Nigeria doesn't deserve a better paying job...C ' mon go and have several seats. Olodo, iti mpataka!

Anonymous said...

Why r u bitter? If it was u ur parents wanted to go abroad wont u go......anyway whether u wld hav gone or not...dats ur choice....d guy is only tryin to emphasize on d rate of underemployment....he is not sayin studying in uk makes d guy better

l share you're sentiment. Firstly, I think its easier to get a first-class result in the UK if you put your back into it compared to the system in Nigeria. Know this cause I studied there and served in a poly in Nigeria. I share the similar working experience with any other person that studied at home. I've returned for post grad now doing an extra job in a country that threatens to end part time work for students. I am still aiming for a distinction but my experience has led me to believe that the system is not eager to create an environment that accommodates brilliance; Not from home nor abroad. The light is, 'There is God, O!"

i and 2 friends left for masters back in sept 2011, graduated in 2013, i decided to do an MBA as well and stayed back, my 2 friends who came back in 2013 looked and hustled for a job, one gave up and entered computer village, (due to his exposure i guess, he is doing quite well) the other one was still home when i came back in dec 2014.

i guess i am the lucky few who got a good job in less than a month after i came back.

when my brother wanted to travel, i told him ex England and go to Canada. and that is what i am advising all you younger folks looking to go abroad for your Masters.
