3 year old boy falls into well while playing with his friends

Tragedy struck when a 3-year-old boy, Emmanuel Samuel, died on Sunday after he fell inside a well in front of a building on Hassan Sule Street, Ita Oluwo, in Ikorodu, Lagos. The toddler was playing with his older brother, Timileyin Samuel, and some of their friends around 3pm in the area when the deceased accidentally fell into the well.

It was learnt that residents and officials of the Lagos State Fire Service, who came to the area after receiving the distress call, had difficulties rescuing the victim due to the depth of the well.

It was gathered that a member of the Oodua People’s Congress later summoned up courage and went down the well to rescue the boy at about 7pm.

He brought out the boy dead.

It was learnt that the well was dug about eight years ago by the landlord of the building but was abandoned when it did not produce water.

Some youths were said to have been angered by the fact that the landlord had left the well open for so long. So, they reportedly stormed the residence and broke some window glasses.

The landlord, Bamidele Ogunwole, was said to have been arrested on Monday after the incident was reported at the Ogijo Police Division, Ogun State.

Emmanuel’s mother, Kikelolomo, who spoke in tears, described the deceased as her “everything.” She said,
“He had brothers and sisters, but he was my everything. He was very intelligent and smart. It was his brother that rushed to tell me he had drowned.”
His father, Sergeant Abu Samuel, said the most painful part was the fact that the landlord buried his child without his consent.
“I was on duty when I was called that my son had drowned only to come back home and be told he was dead. To add insult to injury, that man (the landlord) buried my child somewhere in Agodo without my consent,” he said.
Residents described Emmanuel’s death as avoidable. One of them, who identified herself only as Esther, said,
“It is very easy for anybody to get trapped in a well that is left open like this. One of the man’s tenants told me that they had complained several times to the landlord, but he ignored them.”
The lawyer for the family, P.O. Idogun, accused the police of “foot-dragging,” adding that no relative of the suspect had shown up at the police station. The Chairman of the community development association, Alara Ogodo, blamed the suspect for burying the child without the approval of his family.
The Ogun State Police spokesperson, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, said the landlord had presented himself to the police. He said, “He is in our custody. We will do something about the case.”

It's a pity a young boy's life was cut short by the careless of adults. Why can't they get a cover for the well? Better still construct it properly. Shame to death.

How can they leave a well open even if it's dry. Now an innocent boy has died as a result of their negligence. RIP Emmanuel

This is sad, why should they all be mad at the landlord? They should have secured the place since they are the one living there with kids. They should have tried to look out for safety of their kids. Not absolving the landlord of blame, but thats the first call ...safety of ur family. Sorry for the loss, may God comfort the family.

Dear Linda

has it occurred to you that no major news channel in the world carried the news of buharis visit to washington? not even CNN who is always aware of who Obama gets to see and discuss international issues like terrorism and economy issues.I think the white house doesnt really accept him due to his past leadership. they subdued the media in other not to give a not so important welcome

just my own two cents

AND THIS IS ALSO AS A RESULT OF THE PARENTS CARELESSNESS. CAUSE A THREE YEAR OLD, SHOUL ALWAYS BE WATCHED BY AN ADULT. EBEN WHILE PLAYING. I FEEL FOR HIS SOUL.

That was just reckless on the part of both the landlord and tenants. Knowing kids were abound, covering that we'll should have being a priority, they needn't wait for the landlord to do it.

The tenants should be blamed too. Must they wait for the landlord to do everything? They are very stupid too and should be blamed for the death of that child! Infact, everyone in that coumpound that has little kids! How can you have little kids around and u see such danger, u are calling ur landlord to cover well for you? Wtf!! They should be blamed too! Why didnt they just fucking cover the fucking well themselves? Some tenants sha., you see sumtin bad and u r waiting for landlord. Dumb fucks!!

If the landlord couldnt cover the well, the onus is on the parent who have kids to cover it up for the sake of their children's safety.I dont blame the landlord much tho. There is enough blame to go around

A chid fell into a well at 3pm and at 7pm that was when someone summoned courage to go down and rescue him, imagine after 4hrs,this shows we don't value lives in this country, the so called youths didnt turn up to help the situation but they can vent their anger by destroying properties, they better leave the landlord alone,so no one other than the landlord could make provision to cover up that well knowing they are children around, now this has happened I'm sure they will tax themselves... But Oga landlord u bury person pikin without him consent shuuuuu u sef get problem...

If the landlord was not interested in covering that well, the parents should have taken it upon themselves to do it. It is the sole duty of parents to child-proof their homes. The first thing any responsible parent does is to look around and make sure that the house and compound are safe for their children. If your landlord is wasting time, you don't fold your arms. Some people are always reluctant to be proactive, forgetting, in this instance that it is their own children at risk.
