The oppression of
women, she says, "Makes me angry. I can't
not be angry. I don't know how you can just be calm. My family says
to me, 'Oh, you're such a man!' - you know, very lovingly… But of
course I'm not, I just don't see why I shouldn't speak my mind."
She got into trouble for speaking her mind in Nigeria: when an
interviewer addressed her as Mrs Chimamanda Adichie, she corrected
him, saying she wished to be known as "Ms", which the journalist
reported as "Miss".
Her insistence on her own family name was all
over the news here last spring. She should be happy to be addressed
as "Mrs", she was told, since she was, after all, married. She
laughs now, but it's clear the story still disturbs her. "It was
the lack of gratitude on my part for having a husband. And yet I
didn't want to proclaim it: I wanted to claim my own
name."

Yes, y is it so necessary dat once u marry, ur identity goes with it, am a feminist to d core, maybe is a literary tin, but ve always advocated fo gender equality in my little way, within my friends, and d most important factor which is one mustn't lose ones identity nd voice. It also a woman's world, biblical Eve was created from d side of Adam to be a companion walking side by side not underneath. I can go on nd on, it's annoying that for u to be called 'successful' u must be married with Mrs behind ur name. Like really as might as God Is nd I was created by Him nd in his Image all I can accomplish is marriage. I know love is good cos God is love, but dat shouldn't define who I am a human being, my hard work, strives, struggles, business minded, and above all my voice should define me. An not a woman in business am a person in business.

This woman irks me. I can't stand some of her comments not related to her chosen profession. She should just stick to what she knows best, writing books and nothing else. I have a mother and sisters and have never heard complain and moan about oppression against women. While it may not be perfect for women, I don't think it is as bad as she paints it. What about the oppression against people of colour? Isn't that a bigger problem in the world.
Is this lady still married to anyone because I can't see what man with a spine will put up with what comes out of her mouth. I've only seen picture of her with her husband once. We know who wears the pants in that household. Perhaps, it isn't even a real marriage.

I read the entire interview. This woman obviously does not think much about Nigerian men. She thinks that Nigerian men are all wife beaters who do nothing for their wives but drink all day while their poor trader wives are hard at work.
I have to ask doesn't Ms. Adichie have a father, or he thinks his father is different from all other Nigerian men. This woman is a load of nonesense.

You are one of those in secured men who are ruled by their ego rather than intelligence n quest for knowledge. This woman is very African and real, be open minded and be proud of the African you are. Women deserve respect, men deserve respect, humans deserve respect.

I don't see why a woman should have no opinion for a man not be seen as weak.A woman should respect her husband and he should respect her. I don't know who deceived you, that you should be meek to every man you meet. you should be submissive to only your husband, and please understand the meaning of submission, it doesn't mean you are a door mat. Please educate yourself! A woman getting married doesn't mean she doesn't exist anymore, she should keep her name if she wishes to. Everyone should have a choice.
@Anon 1:28pm, I am not insecure. I find fault in her analogy. Every time Ms. Adichie talks about feminism, she paints Nigerian men as having no respect for women and opressing them. However, she mentions that her mother was the first Register at UNN. Someone had to have given her mother the opportunity to become the first Register of a major Nigerian University. I might site that Ms. Adichie and her sister were also product of the University of Nigeria and no one deprived them from attending the university. There are countless accomplished Nigerian women, who have succeeded in their respective fields without complaints about oppression from men.
Ms. Adichie is an accomplished writer because she is good in what she does but also because someone saw that in her and gave her the opportunity.
Ms. Adichie needs to channel her feminism energy to something more useful to Nigerian women such as better maternal healthcare for women to prevent them from dieing from child birth or helping provide opportunities for women to start small businesses and become self sufficient. There countless other ways she can help the Nigerian without bashing the men. Characterizing Nigerian men the way she does only alienates them from her, including women who believe in traditional gender roles.
