Another reporter present at Synagogue comes for Nicholas Ibekwe

Reporter Bayo Akinloye was one of those at the Synagogue church when T.B Joshua offered N50k to journalists. He says Nicholas wasn't the only journalist who refused the money and says Nicholas maligning his colleagues is sad, evil and unprofessional. See more tweets after the cut...

In the course of trying to be professional, nicholas has ended up being unprofessional by his wrong assumption that every other journalists at SCOAN was 'bribed' as he claim. A professional journalist will leave assumption out of his report. Besides there is no journalist that's free from sins of bribery. Even if you donot collect brown envelope from organisations, as long as ur organisations refuse to write(which is often the case) negative stories about the organisations that advertise with them and you receive ur salary from the proceeds of such advert, my brother Nicholas, u r not clean.

I know that even Linaikeji will never carry a negative story about her sponsors.

I will still commend Nicholas Ibekwe for opening this can of worms in the first place. These belated responses/tweets only give credence to the fact that the so called prophet offered bribe(s)to journalists to write about survivors only. SCOAN and NEMA are not telling the truth about the casualty figures. I am sure that the number is much higher. These pastors/prophets are something else. God help us.

You see, this is the problem with Nigeria. When someone comes out to fight the ills of the society, they attack him.
For the journalist tweeting that he did not collect money from tb joshua, you are as guilty as those that collected, because you saw what was going on and kept quite. Your own sin may even be the worse because you have just attacked someone that had the courage to speak out. Who is even sure that you did not take the money. I guess this is a pathetic attempt to redeem yourself.

Any journalist that collects a brown envelope in the developed world, be it in the form of the so called 'honorarium' before writing a story will kiss goodbye to his or her career. Nigerian journalists should stop mortgaging their conscience. That's why there is no investigative reporter in the Nigerian press, not even a single one. They have all become so lazy and so reliant on the brown envelop. One rarely sees an article worth reading in our print media these days. Shame to you all so called journalists. You have all sold your conscience for mere brown envelopes.
Kudos again to you, Nicholas Ibekwe!

Thank God say I nor be journalist because I must defend brown envelope. Even if you know say e bad and your conscience judge you, you go still take am and as you take am, your story when you want to write before must change, no how. If na to cover detergent , bank award programme or conference, then dem give you envelope, no shaking. I know since say D.... State govt and V....... Sports writers dey enjoy themselves well well for that level because if you read their story you won't need to be told.

Unknown said...

So in the end no one is disputing that there was a bribe given? Uhn ok....*walks away*

Anonymous said...

All those saying Nicholas acted saintly, the guy must have been fed up with journalists demanding for the brown envelopes before they are offered, and even offering subtle threats. They do it. If they want to write something bad about the organization you are heading and you don't offer them, they will give you a rundown of what they are going to write and you will not be told before you deliver.

Anon 10:25pm you're the one with blocked brain. He never said bottled water was a bribe, he just epxlained that he didn't even take the bottled water that was offered, talk less of taking bribe. People like you who try to twist things and obscure obvious things are the ones destroying this country alongside your corrupt leaders. Giving people money for attending your father's burial is different from giving people money to only report one aspect of actual events to cover up loss of lives, to distort the number of dead people and to ignore the real issue, which is; why the building was erected without the care and safety of people in mind and distracting people's attention away from that.

Anonymous said...

Bayo, make I nor lie, I suspect you collected that 50k( because world people eye strong o) and as your voice nor come outside for the tape you feel say you need to clear your name because silence go mean say you take, that's why you dey curse the guy because wetin e do too pain you. After all no video evidence. Bayo, you took the 50k HONORARIUM.

Anonymous said...

I have one question for you anon 11:15pm, when or where exactly did he say all the other journalists took bribe? Did we read the same write-up? Or you want him to start mentioning the names of those who ddnt collect it one by one? If they're so proud of not collecting bribe, why didn't they report the bribery first? Trust me, I do understand that in Nigeria, it's hard to stand up for what is right and if you do, you don't want to step on anyone's toes so they don't come after you and your family. That being said, if that is why other journalists who refused to take bribe ddnt report it; then fine. But they shouldn't come and attack the person who put his neck on the line either. Just say you too ddnt collect any bribe and leave it at that!

The much I have read regarding the tragic collapse of TB's high rise guest house goes to indicate that gross criminal negligence on the part of TB and his shrine (sorry, his church) is at the root of the building collapse and also of the level of casualty recorded following the incident....
I maintain that TB ought to have been docked to face criminal trial on a multi-count charge of criminal negligence, premeditated mass murder, conspiracy, among many others....
I respect journalist Nicholas Ibekwe for speaking up apparently on the side of the ideal, the dead and their grieving families...
But I denounce him for waxing self-righteous and flaying his colleagues just because, unlike him, their consciences did not dissuade them from collecting TB's cash gift.
I refuse to be swayed by Ibekwe's argument that the cash gift is a bribe willy nilly.
For one, hardly did the journalists solicit for the gift in order to obfuscate the truth or facts and pervert the course of justice, as it was freely given and delivered to them without any conditions attached to the largess or its use....
I guess the journalists were invited by TB for the briefing and thus he felt obligated to take care of their T-fare, although it may not be impossible that he chose to make the gift a quantum in order to subtly influence the reportage of the tragedy...
That however does not make the cash gift bribe's synonym...
Something tells me that Ibekwe is angry not so much at TB as with his colleague journalist's "conscience."
But a little study of philosophy would have taught Ibekwe that nothing could be more fickle as 'conscience' as it lacks objectivity in being...
Rendered in colloquial parlance: 'one man's meat is another man's poison.'
Ibekwe is only angry that his colleague journalists made cool 50K on the ashes of his own conscience....
Moreover I fear that Ibekwe is not exactly the idealist he is trying to project...
I mean that his object of idealism is not the engagement of the media to bring TB to account for his criminal negligence; on the contrary it is the issue of money, which his colleagues made at the expense of his conscience...
I could bet with my account balance that Ibekwe could have cared less about whether or not the reportage of the incident afforded TB a soft landing if only his colleagues did not become 50k richer than him....
He is just angry over the money...
He is talking like a loser who wanted his pound of flesh!!!!!
Ibekwe is bitter, and only using the tragedy to whip his colleagues silly....

You guys blaming Bayo seem not to understand. If you're a journalist and your employers knew you were there when TB Joshua addressed the journalists and one of you came out to say everyone collected the money, how easy do you think it will be to convince your employers that he didn't collect the money. The truth is that Nicholas could't have known that he was the only one that refused it since the journalists were told to see the accountant. What if a few other journalists didn't also see the accountant who gave out the money. So what the guy was saying is that Nicholas should have said some journalists rather than say all the journalists except him. I also think it was not fair. Can he mention the names of all the journalists that were there? So he didn't know all of them and shouldn't have said all of them.

I know that Nigerian journalists are very corrupt, biased, ethnic and religious zealots who can never speak or say the truth but report according to their tribal affiliations or whether u have settled them . woe betide you if they hate u or u do not settle them, u will be finished by their dirty pens. that is why people like myself only go for instant news media like linda ikeji, bellanaija and others. At least u can rely on wht they tell u or show you.

When it was first reported that a certain amount of money was offered by the pastor on question, I felt it was just an attention seeking journalist but this apology just blows the truth open. No apology is required here my dear new attention seeking journalist as your name wasn't mentioned . You obviously earned your degree, so you should know better. Peoples lives were lost here and a man who should be reconciling the event is offering bribe in the name of fuel money. Smh!!! God has really started to vindicate the innocent. I don't see any reason for crying wolf, u shut your mouth since on the alleged bribe issue so why speaking up now?
