A health
visitor with a first class honours degree in nursing was found hanged
after she became tormented by her severe skin condition.
Hollie McEwen, a dedicated professional, first suffered psoriasis as a 12-month-old but it eased with treatment. However, it later reappeared due to stress and the 28-year-old became so depressed she took her own life at home.
Her father Andrew told an inquest: 'Her condition played a large part in what she decided to do.
'She was a beautiful, vibrant young woman who felt she couldn't deal with the condition. She felt this was the only way out.'
The
Doncaster hearing was told she had suffered from bulimia as a teenager.
Her family believed the eating disorder stemmed from her ongoing
issues with her skin condition.
Her
mother Wendy said: 'Her skin condition played a large part in her
problems as a teenager and when older I feel this was at the root of all
the problems.'
Hollie's body was found just two days after she had sought medical help for her depression.
She had spent a long time writing several letters to loved ones which were found in a bin.
Her
father, who saw her the evening before the tragedy said: 'She was a
happy, young woman who enjoyed her work and social life but she kept
everything very close to herself. We had a good laugh on that last night
and there was no indication she was unhappy.'
Mrs
McEwen said her daughter, who lived in Scawsby, Doncaster, had
treatment for psoriasis over the last few years involving hospital stays
and steroids after suffering anxiety attacks.
Hollie
had enjoyed a family holiday in Turkey but was 'down' after being given
an anti-depression drug by her GP which failed to lighten her mood.
'She
was an intelligent, determined and organised young woman,' she said. 'I
told her to keep going with the tablets and give it time.'
When
told about her daughter's death she said: 'I was in absolute shock. Her
death has left a large hole in our family. I still can't understand why
this has happened.'
Hollie's
brother Andrew told the inquest: 'She was a happy young woman who
enjoyed her work and social life. She kept everything very close to
herself.'
He said
there was no indication that she was unhappy the evening before she
died. He added: 'As a teenager she was always conscious of her skin
condition and it worried her greatly.'
Hollie's
neighbour Elaine Lunn found a note from her on the morning of Friday,
May 23 asking her to call the emergency services so Hollie's family
would not find her body.
She
said: 'I believe she had planned it. There was nothing to suggest prior
that she was going to do anything like this. I feel totally
distraught.'
She
added: 'She was a very attractive young woman. She was energetic,
thoughtful and caring and studied to further her career. She was very
bright and intelligent.'
Nurse
and friend Angelina Deighton, who trained with Hollie at Sheffield
Hallam University, said she knew her psoriasis had worried Hollie and
she said she was having treatment and counselling.
'She
was always the life and soul of our friendship group,' she said. 'She
was always bubbly. She had a boyfriend for a few months in 2013 but it
fizzled out and she wasn't concerned about it.
'Lately
she described being tired, down and just not coping. She had been to
her GP for anti-depressants but she didn't think counselling would help
her and she tried to help herself.
'I tried time and time again to get her to seek help. She had many friends who thought she would never do anything like this.'
Behavioural
psychotherapist Jessica Dunn, who had a session with Hollie just two
days before she died, said Hollie had started to feel anxious and
overwhelmed at having to plan a friend's hen party.
'She was
well presented with immaculate hair and make-up,' said Miss Dunn. She
had 'dark thoughts' but had no intention of carrying them out. 'She told
me "I wouldn't put my family through that".'
Hollie
had been avoiding her friends and not socialising because her mood was
so low. After breaking down in tears in the witness stand Miss Dunn
said: 'I had no concern for her safety.'

Rip, depression is bad
I've suffered from this psoriasis like 3times and I just use 2things for it. The first time it appeared I was 23yrs (still in university) , I didn't know what it was, it was itchy and it first came out on my arm. Went to see our family doctor and he told me to take anti biotic for it that am reacting to something. After I had d antibiotics, it became worse, the thing spread up to my stomach and all my hands to my neck. Then I became worried, went to run some test, HIV,Skin scraper, widal test, HVS and etc. All came out negative. One of my superstitious friend then said it cld be jazz, how it happened to her neighbour and she went to one local herbalist and all. But I wasn't buying that cos I don't believe in jazz. I started wearing long sleeve and jackets to cover my self up cos I was afraid ppl will stigmatize me, or even claim am HIV positive. I didn't stop searching for the cause of my rashes. You don't feel sick or anything, is just the rashes that appears like a Christmas tree and the itch. So somebody directed to meet with one doctor at FMC owerri. She's a dermatologist and knows her job so well. She's also in HIV unit at FMC, the day I got there (Tuesday) wch was d very day in d week HIV patients comes to take there routine injection there. I waited for her to finish attending to d HIV patients, some of d student doctors thought I was a new carrier that came for my medication. They kept on asking me to come up and do d needful but I told them I was waiting for someone. Finally d woman called for me and I was asked to remove my jacket, she used me to teach d student doctors few things about d disease. I came all prepared with all my lab results indicating that am not HIV positive as d student doctors initially thought but d woman wasn't interested in what was in my results. After I removed my jacket she told me what was wrong with me. (psoriasis) and explained to me and the student doctors how it started and why it got to d state it got to. She further explained that if I did not take the antibiotics, it wld ve cleared on its own after 6weeks and also d antibiotics is d reason why d rashes spread so badly as it did. The rashes spread from d chin down to my thighs and it doesn't go beyond there. She quickly told me to stop wearing anything long sleeve that it also makes it to spread d more cos of the heat. She told me to go and buy Nizoral shampoo and be using it to bath and use cinalar cream as my daily cream. After 4days my rashes disappeared and my skin came back to normal. So since then, anytime I see it, I don't get worried,i just buy those two things and it clears immediately. Taking your life is not going to solve anything, rather it will cause more harm to your loved ones alive. Seek for answers to any question or unknown sickness u have. God bless
Google is ur friend
Psoriasis is the most common Immune disease in the world, alot of Nigerians suffer from the condition and yes when you have scales growing all over your skin, itching all over and u cannot go out or wear the sort of clothes normal ppl wear; im yet to see a person who wouldnt be depressed by that. Rest in peace and i hope your death brings more enlightenment to the nightmare that is psoriasis. Linda google it and enlighten your followers, no point sharing the story otherwise
Just shut up you can't compare psoriasis wit wat u listed above its hard 2 deal wit.do u knw wat it feels like to see your skin dat way it has no cure
She is a big fool
RIP FOR HER
Lovely, google it
You guys neva knew wat dat girl went thru.but dat was a poor choice she made.wher d hell was Joel Osteen's Stuffs.
its so funny when people make comments like, Linda enlighten us more on what Psoriasis is, that is the problem with the Nigerian youth, you want to be breast fed till you are old, when you read news, digest it more by researching-Psoriasis is a skin disorder, Psora -itching conditions, its scaly patches on the skin of the host...phewww
Rest in d lord
Easy for you guys to judge her when you dont live with the ailment. Its hard to deal with physically and psychologically. Our dear anonymous who says she has had it 3 times...you havent really had it my dear...thank God yours is mild...when you have had it for over 10 years continuously...then you can be in a position to judge...i guess white people are not as strong emotionally as we are...Nigerians are generally long suffering...lol
Picture eczema and dandruff as a single disease growing on your body...
First off, the heading of this article is completely horrible. Linda, it's very irresponsible of you to write that a person took her life based on a skin condition. The most important factor is SHE SUFFERED FROM DEPRESSION! This is serious, and it's real. It can cause a person to take tier own life. You have a responsibility to inform your readers so that if ANY one is suffering from mental health disease they get Help.
Suicide is really on the increase. May God have mercy on us
