Sanusi calls for the sack of 50% of civil servants in Nigeria

The Central Bank governor on Monday called for the sack of 50% of civil servants in Nigeria because according to him, 'the country spends 70 per cent of its earnings on salaries and entitlements of civil servants.'
“You have to fire half of the civil service because the revenue of the government is supposed to be for 167 million Nigerians. Any society where government spends 70 per cent of its revenue on its civil service has a problem. It is unsustainable,” he said.
Organized Labour, including the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, the Civil Liberties Organisation and Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union, have all condemned his statement, some asking for his immediate sack.

Sanusi has shown us that that he thinks in only one direction and his level of insensibility. In this age and time that other countries are strategizing to create more jobs, Sanusi is promoting umemployment. I wonder how he managed to became the Governor of CBN. It is pathetic and calls for examination of his mental and psychological health. Harmattan comes with varying degrees of psycho-related diseases.

Anonymous said...

Sadly, he is correct. But civil service only explains part of govt excess. The bulk of itcomes from ghost workers, Fake contracts, redundancy across govt sectors, largesse of legislators. Before Sanusi condemns he needs to break It down further. How many Civil servants per the total the total expenditure in question ie this amt divided by the no of civil servants... then do the same for the exec level of govt and legislative side make we see how e be. na exec and legislative bodies day do damage. word of wisdom- many will leave civil service if there are secure private sector jobs.

Sorry, I would rather we are wasting our money paying our civil servants and NOT making many more Nigerians Unemployed!!!
If Sanusi is advocating for saving money, he should really start CUTTING, CURBING & FIGHTING CORRUPTION from the TOP; that is, from the presidency where Goodluck Jonathan is now requesting additional #billions of Naira for ordinary feeding allowance!!!#$SHAME$#

Over here am idiot is saying they should fire 50%! of civil servants and our so called idiotic president is asking for increased allowance for food which is already well over billions of Naira and they just approved construction of a banquet hall in Aso rock costing billion of Naira, why don't they do something about that first and use that revenue for the people of Nigeria before calling for the sack of innocent people trying to make a livelihood in their motherland!
Sorry for my long epistle.. but the more i read things about Nigeria the more irritated i get and then i contemplate going back.

Yes, Sanusi is right- we need to cut down the number of civil servants if we are to make the most of the civil service- in fact, civil servants are responsible for theft of billions of naira from the country every year. Even here in the UK, the government is moving to trim the civil service and government bodies and i think that Nigeria should do the same too. You don't need two passport officers to check your passport at the airport when you enter the country and you certainly don't need 20 customs officers to check your baggage as you leave the arrivals hall at the airport! Likewise, inefficient public servants should be sacked and more states should not be created. Additionally also, there are far too many local governments

I have an aunt who works in one of the ministries, she closes @ 2pm, she even said some of them leave from like 12noon, why pay salaries to people who don't work?

Go check all the data, that is if you are not too sick to see the truth, you will know that the guy makes sense. The so called civil servants are holding Nigeria by the balls. They waste resources and precious time. When they are supposed to work, they are gisting, selling or having a party. They resume at 10am and close at 1pm from their mosque. How many of them civil servants can do that in civilized countries? Where you work your old ass off on an 8 hour shift. If you are caught using your phone, you are fired. Even if you are an oga. You are not allowed to use company time for personal business. But not so in my beloved country. Everybody in secretariats is a business man or woman. They sell recharge cards, toilet rolls, Ogi, chicken and turkey from Cotonou, Dubai gold, Dubai clothing s, tires, phones, handbags, name it. How can a country survive when every of its citizen is a rapist. They not only rape themselves, but they also rape the country. Have you heard that curse causeless does not stand. Check your bible.

Pls let's not missunderstand the rational for Sanusi saying what he said. It's probably the way he presented it. There are lots of inapproprite practices in the civil like ghost workers and absent staff that still gets paid. If u go to the secritariat u'll see members of staff gathered and watching tv and gossiping. When they are meant to be working because there is really nothing there to do. I wasnted a document signed for me sometime ago and they couldn't get someone to sign it for me. I kept on going there for two weeks. Yet there were lots of staff around but no one could attend to me. Lots of inefficiency and lackadesical attitude is the order of the day there.

I was privy to watch the speech sanusi gave on this issue, it made perfect sense. so from the post above, its simple there is NO MONEY to improve or boost the private sector, majority of states are broke even before they collect monthly allocation cause it all goes to paying salaries. infrastructure will never improve or get built and nigeria will never move forward.

Anonymous said...

Sanusi needed to have a rethink/reevaluate his decision before proceeding to make this statement. If he really wants to do an outstanding job, let him "man up" and not only set up policies that curb over inflation and corruption in contracts (that don't see the light of day), and overspending, but actually apply those policies. He can't promote the firing of these civil servants and then turn a blind eye to the exorbitant amount to build some seats in Aso rock. The last time I was home to survey my hometown to assess where to help, I saw some schools that need touch ups and the university's 500-lecture theater is... Most Nigerian leaders and Nigerians in position should stop this nonsense of "money - miss- road" and rearrange Nigeria's priority and put the nation and it's citizens first for once. What I'm most happy about is KARMA. What these "evil and selfish" people don't know or refuse to grasp is that the world is a universe and for every action, there's a equal and opposite reaction... if not now, but in their generation(s) to come, they will experience the appropriate reaction(s)and shouldn't cry why me when they reap what they are sowing...

SLS is a big disappointment,he obviously loves to hear the sound of his voice. He should concentrate on his job as CBN Gov,rather than getting in the murky waters of politics . He should tell us the annual budget of the CBN and stop grandstanding for cheap popularity

You think if Sanusi gets sacked today, he will be bothered? I think not! This man is so full of himself. gone are the days when we loved this man for standing up for justice. Now he just screams "Yes! I am one of dem corrupt leaders, what are you gonna do about it!" Similarly to Dora Akunyili, They all start well and end up being worse than what they stood for. I'm seriously praying for Nigeria!

Technically sanusi is right, but also wrong, u complain that civil savants ® lazy, they don't do there duties, there ghost workers, blah blah blah, the question is sacking them the solution, if they are lazy n they don't do there duties it because u have made rooms for it, if u run the ministry like private companies, u demand what u paying for from them, u will definitely get a good result, the ones that ® not ready to work will even resign before u sack them. About the ghost worker ish, its not civil servants fault that that is in existence, the bosses ® creating them just to embezzle money, the perm sec, there fin sec are all responsible, why don't u put a system in place that will fully utilize this civil servants rather saying u wanna sack them because they aint doing nothing

While Sanusi is very right in his speech, there is no economic framework for competitiveness in nigeria so that particular action will not have the desired effect. It is quite sad the way the country is going but now more than ever we need to diversify the economy and stop depending on crude oil and the government alone

Wake up Nigerians. Where on earth do government generate revenues only to pay salaries to few citizens. It is strange. That may be the reason we are still far far far behind

Whose fault is dt civil servants do not do their jobs competently? And those that are at the top, what exactly do they do??How many issues have they resolved??Yet each time they seat they are entitled to a huge amount of money.Do u know how much is allocated for the feeding of the president? So there shd be checks n balances in all dese areas, not coming out to say craps lik d revenue not bin enough to sustain d civil service!!

Sanusi calling for the sack of 50% of civil servants in Nigeria seems to be very hard on the civil servants as civil servants oppose this greatly.

According to him, there should be reduction on the amount the government spends on re-current expenditure as it doesn't foster development. When more money is spent on re-current expenditure and capital expenditure is allocated less money, there won't be development.

Some have argued that Sanusi should find other means of developing the country rather than making 50% of the civil servants jobless considering the rate of unemployment in the economy.

No doubt, these could lead to a lot of vices in the economy like high rate of crime, fraudulent acts, e.t.c. It could also lead to more poverty and low standard of living of the people.

Some of the civil servants are known mostly to be corrupt, others known to be ghost workers, while some just go to their offices and do whatever they like.

Meanwhile, among them, there are some that can barely eat three square meals a day, sacking these people would mean abject poverty for them.

Another concern for me are those old people who have no other means of income and has been working with the civil service for long, would they join young graduates in search of jobs?

In other to cut down on government expenses on re-current expenditure which doesn't add to development in Nigeria, I suggest that only the bad eggs or corrupt ones among the civil servants should be sacked.

Also, if at all Sanusi wants the government to go with his suggestion, I recommend provisions should be made for people who would be sacked than for them to be sacked and make them join the list of graduates that are still in search of jobs.

Am also of the opinion that there are other ways to aid development; government cutting down on unnecessary budget in the economy, unnecessary allowances, setting their priorities right and so on.
