'Jonathan’s UNILAG Name Change a Gift Horse' - Prof Wole Soyinka

His statement below...
This is one gift horse which, contrary to traditional saying, must be inspected thoroughly in the mouth.
Primary from all of us must be a plea to the MKO Abiola family not to misconstrue the protests against the naming of the University of Lagos after their heroic patriarch.
Issues must be separated and understood in their appropriate contexts. The family will acknowledge that, among the loudest opposing voices to Jonathan’s gift horse, are those who have clamoured tirelessly that MKO Abiola, the Nigerian nation’s president-elect, be honoured nationally, and in a befitting manner.
Next is my confession to considerable shock that President Goodluck Jonathan did not even think it fit to consult or inform the administrators of the university, including Council and Senate, of his intention to re-name their university for any reason, however laudable. This arbitrariness, this act of disrespect, was a barely tolerated aberration of military governance. It is totally deplorable in what is supposed to be a civilian order.
After that comes the bad-mouthing of MKO Abiola and the Nigerian electorate by President Jonathan who referred to MKO as the “presumed winner” of a historic election. While applauding the president for finally taking the bull by the horn and rendering honour unto whom honour is due, the particularities of this gesture have made it dubious, suspect, and tainted.

You do not honour someone while detracting from his or her record of achievement. MKO Abiola was not a presumed winner, but the President-elect of a nation, and thus universally acknowledged.
It is sad, very sad, that after his predecessor who, for eight full years of presidency, could not even bear to utter the name of a man who made his own incumbency possible, along comes someone who takes back with the left hand what the right has offered.
However, there is hope. Legalists have claimed that there is a legal flaw to the entire process. The university, solidly backed by other tertiary institutions nation-wide, should immediately proceed to the courts of law and demand a ‘stay of execution’. That should give President Jonathan time to re-consider and perhaps shift his focus to the nation’s capital for institutions begging for rituals of re-naming.

After all, it is on record that the House of Assembly did once resolve that the Abuja stadium be named after the man already bestowed the unique title of “Pillar of African Sports”.

He deserved that, and a lot more. What he did not deserve is to be, albeit posthumously, the centre of a fully avoidable acrimony, one that has now resulted in the shutting down one of the institutions of learning to whose cause, the cause of learning, President-elect MKO Abiola also made unparalleled private contributions.
Let me end by stressing that my position remains the same as it was when the University of Ife was re-named Obafemi Awolowo University.

@ FortySeven, you took the words right off my fingertips. This is easily the most accessible thing I've ever read from Prof. Soyinka. Apparently, Mr. Jonathan has more to deal with than he can imagine or even surmount. The standard of education in this country is at best, abysmal and to think that English is our lingua franca. May God have mercy on our nation.

Soyinka needs to learn how to speak and write English in a common everyday sort of way.

There were Nobel laureates before him, and there have been many after him, heck there are even non-laureates like Chinua Achebe who can express themselves clearly, Soyinka, no such luck.

I mean, seriously why use 20 words to describe what can be written in 5? SMH

Well said, but as a very analytical person, i think what GEJ did was born out of sarcasm, there is an ulterior motive to the name change, it is a simple reminder to the North, that when a Northern Head of state deprived MKO of his seat as president, the South stomached it, now, they unleashed Boko haram, when GEJ inadvertently took power, GEJ should not be playing politics with Unilag.

Professor went sentimental there! MKO was never and legally declared as winner so the President is right to call him presumed winner. As Prof likes so much English, this should not be difficult for him to understand. For Jonathan to come up and say he is the winner is just plain stupid. What evidence would he give and on whose authority will he say that.
If the process is flawed, let them resolve this in the court and stop all this drama.

There is no doubt that these kids are the product of Nigerian failing schools; and ofcourse, an uneducated Nigerian electorate voted in and gave rise to the Goodluck Jonathan presidency.
With uneducated readers like these, the comatose state of our Nigerian nation will continue to remain in perpertuity and the death knell towards a regressive political entity is on a full swing. Nigeria is now at the lowest rung of the ladder of degeneracy.

Naijarian said...

What is the corelation between Abiola and Unilag? He was neither an educationist, nor was he instrumental to the founding of Unilag. He was also not a 'shon of the shoil' to boot. Is it simply because Abiola was a yorubaman and Unilag is in Yorubaland? That in itself sectionalizes and trivializes whatever honour it is the government wanted to bestow by making him a local champion. His agitation was much bigger than that. It was national and if he is deemed worthy of honour, why not something national? Why not Abuja National stadium? Why not May 28 or June 12? These are symbols of sports and democracy for which the man was known. It is only people who are not proud of their school that will not understand what the whole outcry is about by the students and alumni of the school. Unilag is an icon in Nigeria and has a proud history. Indeed, together with UI and OAU, they represent the universities of first choice in the South West. Arbitrary change of its name disconnects it from it's past history. It reduces its status and that is what is responsible for the indignation. To make matters worse, it was used as a tool to pander to the perceived wounded pride of the yoruba, some token to be given to the south west to pacify them and to hoodwink them into seeing the president in a positive light. It was not an altruistic move aimed at truly honoring the man. It was all about politics and 2015. ACN and the CPC have closed ranks, so something had to be done to also be on the good books of the ngbati people. This thankfully has backfired and if anything, has served to further distance the very people the president is courting away from him. A wise politician would look for a way to remedy the situation while a naive one will continue to persist in his misadventure. Time is ticking and the disposition of the president will tell which he is...

Gosh people stop complaining and go and read book or get a dictionary.

To be honest I don't think people are much bothered by whether MKO is honoured or not.

It was the blatant disregard for student and staff opinion on an institution that is for them not Jonathan. And at the end of the day what does renaming the school achieve? Nada

Jonathan focus on better things please and do not stick your nose where it doesn't concern you.

The argument put forth by Prof. Shoyinka is what most of the opponents of this renaming of an ICONIC SCHOOL in order to honor another ICONIC FIGURE in Nigeria's democratic despenstayion is saying. He did the right thing in the wrong way, and has created a big canyon between those who really do cherish the ultimate sacrifice by MKO for this Nation.

There are other monuments that could have done the same thing or even better, i.e, having congress to pass a bill to declare the date of his assassination a public holiday in the nation as was done in the United States for MKL (Martin Luther King Jr.). We have the National stadium in the lagos that could have done the trick. Fedreal buildings in Abuja and Lagos are also fine monuments to edifice the legacy of this fine politician. But no, GEJ, the ever controvasial and speak-first-before thinking president had to od it again without even much consultation.

We are all proponents of this great idea but not to hit up the polity by making some not-thought-out pronouncement.

It's foolish to compare Wole Soyinka to Hon Patrick. The difference is VERY clear. My Soyinka is an intelligent man, writes well and he makes sense. Hon Patrick makes absolutely NO SENSE, has no idea what he's talking about and uses BIG WORDS uselessly.

I fear for this generation where technology is the only EDUCATION people live on. What Mr Soyinka writes is easy to read and understand.

I personally don't see the point to change UNILAG to MKO Abiola university. What is the reason behind it, is it to honor him? Why now? Did he contribute to UNILAG before his death? Why change the name of a university to honor him? I don't understand Jonathan Goodluck and his motives.
