Arik Air condemns mob action on one of its managers by angry passengers in Lagos, to take legal action

The airline has released a statement condemning the attack on one of its managers by angry passengers at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport two days ago (Read here). In a statement signed by its Communications Manager, Ola Adebanji, the airline said the verbal and physical attack on its staff and the destruction of some of its properties by frustrated passengers, is unacceptable and will be legally addressed.

According to Adebanji, trouble started when the airline’s Lagos-New York flight was rescheduled from Wednesday to Thursday due to the shortage of aviation fuel.

This is a press statement from Arik Air below...
On Wednesday, 4 January, 2017, our Lagos-New York JFK service which was to operate at 11:30 pm had to be rescheduled by 24 hours to operate at 11:30 pm on Thursday, 5 January, 2017 due to the shortage in supply of aviation fuel by the major fuel marketers.
Our Lagos-Johannesburg service and Lagos- Accra service were also on ground awaiting fuel while the Lagos-New York service was standing by for fuel. Aviation fuel supply has been epileptic in the country over the past weeks where availability of stock and terms of service are not guaranteed on a consistent basis by the marketers.

Arik Air pursued all possible options to source fuel for the international flights on 4 January, 2017 but when our Customer Service Manager at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos approached the passengers to explain the situation to them, one of the passengers chased and attacked him. This was followed by a mob of passengers who brutally beat, kicked and chased the Arik Air staff throughout the terminal building leading to the Immigration Section of the terminal. The staff was later rushed to the hospital where he was treated for injuries sustained during this reckless and inhuman attack.
Arik Air managed to source a small quantity of fuel and despite eventually sorting out the departure of the Johannesburg service, some of the passengers from the affected services damaged the check-in counters, check-in systems and equipment, preventing the airline from being able to service or checking-in passengers on 5 January, 2017.
Again on 5 January, 2017 some of the passengers continued to disrupt the airline’s check-in process by preventing Arik Air staff from performing their duties by sleeping on the conveyor belts, sleeping or sitting on the floor in the check-in area and forcibly occupying the airline’s ticketing and administrative offices, resulting in the cancellation of some of the international flights, including the Lagos-London Heathrow-Lagos service.
Arik Air strongly condemns the incessant and increasing number of attacks on our staff and property in the recent months. As a flag carrier for Nigeria, the airline expresses it disappointment and dismay that the Aviation Security department (AVSEC) of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and all the other security agencies in the country cannot ensure or guarantee the safety of our personnel when on duty across the various airports in the country. This serious breach of security and lawlessness by some of the passengers to assault and cause bodily harm to the airline’s personnel cannot and will not continue to be tolerated.  Passengers continue to take the laws into their hands and the severity and frequencies of such criminal acts are on the rise due to lack of appropriate action or preventative measures from the security agencies.
The resort to verbal or physical violence in any form by a passenger is not acceptable to Arik Air and the airline would henceforth deploy all measures necessary against any passenger who takes the law into their hands. Arik Air will also pursue legal action and engage local and foreign security agencies including private security firms to investigate, identify and prosecute to the full extent of the law all of those passengers in Nigeria and overseas, involved in the attacks against our personnel and property. The airline also intends to formally address the regulators, security agencies and aviation authorities both in Nigeria and overseas to get an immediate resolution to this matter.
Security at our airports ought to be improved to guide against unwarranted and uncalled for assaults on airline personnel and passengers. Despite repeated appeals and calls for intervention on numerable occasions, the airport authorities and security agencies have done nothing to protect the lives of staff and property of Arik Air in the wake of these attacks. The same authorities are however spontaneous in sanctioning the airlines whenever there is a service disruption without providing adequate support or security to prevent passengers from disrupting the service in the first instance.
Arik Air once again makes a final appeal to all the security agencies (AVSEC-FAAN/Nigerian Armed Forces/Directorate of Security Services/Nigerian Police Force) in the country to intervene immediately and protect the airline personnel and property from unwarranted attacks by passengers. Arik Air also appeals to its passengers to be civil and refrain from such disruptive and unlawful actions that risk the life of airline staff and that of fellow passengers.
Arik Air is fully committed to the safety and security of its passengers, staff and assets and will do all possible within its means to pursue and prosecute to the full extent of the law, all perpetrators of such criminal acts against the airline.

Arik airline shld b ashamed not to talk about releasing a press statement.. They do not provide accomodation for passangers when they dissappoint them.. They even find it hard to refund money being paid.. Keeping their passangers stranded. They shld also b sued for causing mental disorientation to customers and apologize to all their customers.. It is a low down dirty shame that arik air is coming out to rant, instead of addressing the issue of incompetency on its part. People schedule their days of travel for their personal reasons, you can't continue changing people's plan & expect them to be happy. But however phisical aggression must be avoided at all cost.

Hunmmmmmm, is like Arik has not shown you before? ....... If not, u would have given all those passengers Koboko to flog all Arik staff. Can you imagine rubbish, they want to sue their Customers? They have done this nonsense many times to their Customers, even, when aviation fuel was flowing like water........ It is not their fault! Let me tell you, Arik will keep you for 8/10hrs afterwards, dey will cancel the flight

Enter your comment... Nigerians love showing the world their level of unculturedness & miseducation. Please stop blaming ARIK' is it by force you must fly AriK to heaven? As for Arik the airline has just started to swallow the bitter pills it manufactured.

You make me laugh in swahili, are you complaining of Arik's poor service? Hian! You haven't seen anything yet. You are getting what you deserved for keeping too quiet over a long period of accepting shabby treatments from airlines as a normal thing.

Shut up your smelling mouth. Who told you they don't provide accommodation when an international flight is being cancelled. .. Am sure you haven't flown in your life and you are first to comment rubbish.... If they pretend to be okay and have plane crash you will be the first to blame them.. Mumu idiot

So instead of apologizing they are writing press statement. They should please let us know when the case comes up so that all aggrieved passengers including myself will take a stand at the witness box. Not one ounce ounce of competence or empathy in their blood. It's because of the rudderless country we find ourselves in that they behave they way they do coupled with lack of serious competition.

Arik Air ought to be ashamed of themselves for even issuing this statement. It is not in their right to cancel or reschedule flights at will and so ought to apologize to affected passengers and members of the public for a breach in contract. They should realize they could be sued for even delaying a flight for an hour talk less of 24 hrs. This is bad PR for them. While no one is an advocate of violence, i am sure if it was better handled that should have been avoided. They should take responsibility for service failure and should not shoot themselves in the foot by seeking legal redress.

I am not a fan of violent aproach to problem solving. However this press statement seems to confirm my doubts over the skills and temperament of the Arik Air management.
How many times have you heard of such attacks on KLM, BA,Emirate or even Ethiopian Airlines staff?
A reasonable man would ask :
1.why among all the airlines operating at MMA,it is only Arik that experienced fuel shortage?
2.if others also had similar experience, how come one of their managers wasn't beaten up in the same fashion.?
3.is it only the Arik manager that has the SUGAR THAT ATTRACTS THE ANTS ?
While reiterating my stand on non violent aproach ,I must ask (as a victim of Arik's managerial ineptitude ) that the Airline should critically appraise it's aproach in crisis resolution.

I think you who said shut up should shut up. Arik is crap and should be sued for multiple inconveniences caused to their passenger . Once again shut up and stop insulting someone who has an opinion which is valid and true . Thank you

@Obi Albert: You are too much.

Before i make this comment (just before someone decides to insult me) know that I have flown arik and they have delayed me a number of times.

Im really surprised at some people's comments but truly it shows how we think in this country..Mob action has become a subconscious reaction in Nigeria and a few people should be used as scapegoats so people can re-orientate themselves.

So an airline delays or cancels your flight and you beat the manager up? We are a barbaric set of people and even the so called educated people condone this nonsense. What happened to suing them individually or initiating a class action like normal humans will do?

Arik air has been struggling for the last one year and a recently resigned pilot blew a whistle on them recently on their maintenance. If you have flown with them recently you can even tell from the celotape all over their aircrafts.

This is not to excuse them but they are struggling and I hope the government is doing something to help them survive cos once they cease operations we don't have any nigerian international carrier anymore.

I also hope arrests have been made as redress to the assaulted manager because people should never think they can do whatever they like because they're angry.
