Appeal court affirms 25 years jail term for Boko Haram convicts

The Court of Appeal in Lagos on Friday affirmed the judgment of a Federal High Court in Lagos convicting and sentencing three members of the dreaded terror group, Boko Haram to 25 years imprisonment each.
The Appeal Court, in a judgment delivered by Justice Y.B Nimpar, rejected the appeal filed by the convicts and upheld the judgment of the court below.

Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court in Lagos, had on September 30, 2014, handed down the verdict after the Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Justice, successfully prosecuted the terrorists before the court.

The State Government had filed charges against four accused persons for conspiracy to commit a felony to wit: acts of terrorism, concealing information about acts of terrorism and having possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition contrary to various sections of the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act, 2013 and the Firearms Act, Cap F.28 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Out of the four persons charged, three were sentenced to 25 years imprisonment each, while the fourth accused was discharged and acquitted.
Those convicted and sentenced are Ali Mohammed Modu, Adamu Ali Karumi and Ibrahim Usman Ali.

Dissatisfied with the verdict, the convicts through their lawyer, had approached the Appeal Court in Lagos asking that the verdict be upturned on the grounds that they were charged under inapplicable laws, and that the 25 years terms of imprisonment were excessive.

One of the convicts, Ibrahim Usman Ali, had specifically argued that he was inadvertently convicted and sentenced for a count with which he was not charged.

While the Court of Appeal agreed that one of the convicts was wrongly convicted under a count with which he was not charged, the Court however affirmed the judgment of Justice Buba which convicted and sentenced the three terrorists to 25 years imprisonment each.

Inapplicable laws Abi? The penalty for murder is death by hanging or firing squad. Pls let them choose one if 25 years isn't enough. Cowards.

Are our legislators really striking the balance in their judgements considering their representation of their constituencies while feeding on gargantuan take home pays. They pass laws sentencing kidnappers to death and actual killers boko haram terrorists are allowed to walk away on the phantom jail sentence. We are watching ...but nemesis will catch up with them soon enough...

Only in Nigeria, kidnappers death sentence while boko haram (terrorists) 25 years in prison. Tribalism in everything

Boko haram? 25yrs in prison? Only?.... May God punish both de judge n de convict....if boko haram were to come from de south , it would have been felony case n the judgement would have been " shut at sight or death sentence....
Jst like when Fulanis herdsmen invades ones land, kill n burn , they termed them foreigners but when they are killed , they call them INNOCENT Nigerian herdsmen.,.. Jst imaging , after destroying the lives n peace of dis country those evil creatures were still given another opportunity to live n they ve de effrontery to appeal...metheeeew

Just 25 years for terrorist who has killed many souls? what happens after the 25 years
more killing? I think it should be life imprisonment.

Why not a death sentence. They don't deserve to leave.

Our baby politicians are at it again. They proposed 25 years jail term for Boko Haram sects (killers of people) which sets them free in 12 and half years while they proposed capital punishment/ death sentence for kidnappers. Nigerian leaders have never been ready to transform the country.

Say no said...

If this message is real that means this senates have all done crazy because if they can sign death sentence to kidnappers who wants nothing more than just money and no life threat alless it went out of hand and give this death but death blood and lives takers 25 years I think this is a good business I will like to invet too if this post is real because linda mmmmm I can't say much shal but we the civilian will sign the law of all senate that approve this 20189 years in jail and linda

Just imagine...I was thinking it will be life imprisonment...rubbish

Only??? I'm beginning to suspect these politicians as their sponsors

If they sentence kidnappers that ordinarily would not want to kill their victims so as to get ransom to death by hanging, why would they now agree on 25 years for those who derives joy in killing.

Is appeal court on drugs? How can you sentence those blood thirsty demons for only 25 years? They have killed a lot of people and should also be killed too. These are people who dont care about their own lives or human life. Who told you that they would change when the come out of jail? Rubbish!
