Airport ladder saga. NCAA sanctions Aero Contractors Airlines

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has imposed an applicable sanction on Aero Airlines over the airport ladder disgrace we all witnessed over the weekend. According to Sam Adurogboye, Ag General Manager, Public Relations, NCAA:
"The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has imposed an applicable sanction on Aero Contractors Airlines in line with Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig.CARs)"

"In a letter conveying the sanction, the Director General of the Regulatory Authority, Capt. Muhtar Usman, said the action of Aero Contractors Airline in allowing the use of a ladder to disembark passengers from a Boeing 737 – 500 aircraft in a non-emergency situation is contrary to its approved aircraft handling manual."

"Therefore this is a violation of Part 9.2.4.2(b) of Nig.CARs  which part attracts a civil penalty. All relevant agencies made useful submissions during the course of the investigation."
In the letter dated yesterday, December 22, Usman continued: "in view of the safety implications of your action you are hereby sanctioned in accordance with the provisions of Part 20.2.3(15) of the Nig.CARs."

"Although the incident did not result in any mishap, the aircraft is airworthy and the Crew well qualified to operate the flight. However, it is viewed as a breach and resultantly a fine running into millions of naira have been clamped on the airline to serve as deterrence and to forestall any similar infraction by any other airline operator."

"In addition, the Captain of the flight was similarly fined for failing to comply with the provisions contained in the aircraft manual."

"The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority ,NCAA, therefore wishes to reiterate its earlier warning that all airlines should endeavour to adhere strictly to Civil Aviation Regulations"

It's not the fault of Aero na. It's FAAN not providing the staircase motor.

Hope FAAN and other involved parties have also been sanctioned? It's not enough to make an airline a scapegoat when the relevant partners that are supposed to enable them to work with the right facilities are left free. Whoever got the contract to provide facilities and make Bauchi airport an International airport should be called in for questioning. We need to know how that money was spent.

Unknown said...

But its their job to work towards the safety of their passengers. Passengers may not know the depth of their ignorance.

Unknown said...

Good, they deserve to be sanctioned.

It doesn't serve them right, it wus a chartered flight and they had big dignitaries on board, D captain refused to allow them and he wus going to take them back to Abuja, they threatened him and d crew.Nobody is asking who called for d ladder, d crew did not want to open d door but cause they where in their territory d crew complied if the crew wus maimed and manhandled won't d door still b open. They r punishing d wrong people, they all signed a paper stating they wanted to come down with d ladder before fire service used d ladder for them. U see big men will put us in trouble and walk away freely.D Captain is a white man for Christmas sake meaning he is aware of his environment and had no choice than to oblige him. When he called for Aviation security why did dey turn down his request. NCAA should go and sit down. D fine that will b paid that will b looted @ d end of d day. Useless country where innocent people are punished for the mistakes of d guilty.May God punish all our past leaders for putting Nigeria in dis mess including the present President

This mumu don reach here again? When PH airport was voted as the worst airport in the world, did that an indictment on the people of Rivers state or the airport authority. Try de use your small brain sometimes

Anonymous said...

NCAA is being cqrrless in the handling of this issue and the real culprit is allowed to go free. SAHCOL MD should be summoned by Senate and all SAHCOL staff located at Bauchi sacked. Then appropriate sanctions should then be charged on the Manager SAHCOL Bauchi, SAHCOL and then Aero.
Not just Aero as is being carried out.
This is a National disgrace and should be addressed properly! No sacred Cows!

Unknown said...

FAAN should be sanctioned and not the airline. The airline acted under an emergency situation created by FAAN. Nigerian government agencies are fond of hammering heavy and unreasonable fines on multinational companies. This is not the way to encourage and attract foreign investment.

My understanding is that the whatever is the responsibility of airport authority why punished the wrong people

Anonymous said...

SAHCOL the ground handling company should be fined. They are the ones who didn't provide the steps. Our airliners are operating under dire straits and this fine will compound issues. NCAA should conduct a proper investigation and lay blame properly
