Better still, for every cinema ticket or every popcorn you sell at silver bird, why not give 1percent of each of d earning to unemployed youth. So youths that a lot of them is even underplayed. Instead paying unemployed youths... incentives need to be made available for companies who hire new employees by the federal government. FG need to stop taking advantage of youths in the name of youth corp.turn the youth corp into an opportunity for youths to practice skills/work they will do after service. Let's say for a moment this works. What exactly are graduates supposed to do with 5K per month? compare the amount going to be paid out (with it's attendant potential embezzlement) and what else it can be used for that will empower the youths. Nigeria has a lot of problems, paying unemployed graduates 5K will be far from solving it. This welfarism is ill conceived and will be waste, a waste of such magnitude the stench will take years to settle.
Graduates need to get jobs, they need to know they can cater for their family and put their education to use, a scheme to create job is what this govt should be worried about. Not pay-out welfare.

This is the first time I will align with Bruce on his daily tweet (AKA Leader of Senate tweeting committee). I am working in one the West Africa francophone countries and I pay 30% of my salary as total tax but 14% of it is for CN (Contribution Nationale) out of this the unemployed youth are been paid and other infrastructure but since new government came in they stopped paying the unemployed you but we still paying this in our tax. So this is possible, but it may not be 5% as he said I think PAYE system is good for this so that the pain will not be to much on low earners

I dont think he thought this through. The BVN data does not capture employment status. The PVC/National ID Data is never updated. So if I had no job as at the time I registered, I would reflect as unemployed, even if I got a job 3days later.
About employed Nigerians paying unemployment tax, I think it is highly insensitive of a sitting Senator to recommend that. Considering that the country has enough mineral resources to raise funds and tackle this issue. All the taxes currently being paid by employees, is still not reflected in the quality of life they are forced to live. Bad roads still prevail, poor power conditions, healthcare is zero!!! And you want them to pay more? Thats the height of insensitivity.

Nigeria should set up a Fund to help those who are legitimately unable to work or support themselves. A working free health care and primary education system are also just as important in addition to a system of free housing and feeding under similar circumstances.
I HOWEVER DISAGREE WITH THE SENATOR'S PROPOSAL FOR FUNDING THE 5K. Most of the employed are already struggling to survive on what they earn. School fees, health care, transport costs and housing costs. We also have staff such as drivers and nannies whom we pay as well as family members who need financial help. In addition, we pay almost 30% tax on our incomes to the government already. This is automatically deducted on the Pay as you Earn system. So what does the government do with this money??. If you believe the news, then you may agree the government/its' officials in the past mainly stolen this money.
To start the Fund,I would rather suggest that on both the Federal and State level, the legislators and other government officials are made to donate their absent day salaries including benefits (for example the salaries from those endless recesses which senators grant themselves) to a fund for the unemployed.
After all, if you don't work in the real world, you don't get paid..which is where we started this discussion on the 5K for the unemployed.
