Photos: Protests against LUTH after woman detained for unsettled hospital bill dies

Family members and youths in the Idi-Araba area of Lagos state last Thursday January 29th took to the streets of Idi Araba, to protest the death of one Mrs. Folake Oduyoye who reportedly died on Dec. 13th 2014 at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, after her husband could not offset her medical bill of N1.3million while she was admitted in the hospital for post delivery complications she developed after having a child at the hospital. Continue...

According to Sahara Reporters, Mrs Oduyoye's husband, Mr Oduyoye said she was transferred to LUTH following post delivery complications. He said after she was admitted into the hospital, she was treated and given a bill of N1m which he was able to offset through the help of relatives and associates from his wife's fashion trade. Mr Oduyoye said after his wife was officially discharged by the hospital, he was issued another bill of about N1.3million.

Mr Oduyoye said that he was able to raise N300,000 out of the bill and then had an agreement with management of LUTH to discharge her on the condition that he would provide a guarantor who would stand to ensure that he pays up the balance in a systematic manner and that the guarantor must be a staff of LUTH. He said his inability to provide a guarantor within their workforce made the hospital management detain his wife who in the process developed other illnesses with symptomatic cough. He said the hospital refused to treat his wife's new illness because of the unsettled bill.
"At this point they [hospital management] policed me everywhere, saying I might smuggle my wife out of the hospital. I slept beside her all 45 days in the hospital, watching other patients die on daily basis,” he said.
Sadly his wife passed away in the hospital on 13th of December, 2014,
"She asked me if we would go home any time soon, since she was said to be discharged a month and half ago. But that was only the last five minutes into end for her, I didn't know. At about 2a.m on 13th of December, she finally dropped on my lap,” he said.
One of the leaders of the protest and frontline human rights activist, Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin said this was a case of government corruption.
"This is neglect and a rip off. Where is the National Health Insurance Scheme and where are the billions earmarked for public healthcare?", Okei-Odumakin said.

If they can't treat and allow them pay later all the money being allocated to health, Who is using it then? This is government hospital how come they allowed her.
Only God will save us in this country

RIP Folake. The bill issue would have been handled in a better way. It's just so unfortunate that there's no free health @ the tertiary level and these teaching hospitals need funds to move forward. God knows best!

Anonymous said...

So the leaders of the protest don't realise that LUTH is not Lagos State Teaching Hospital as written on the poster.

Unknown said...

1million plus 1.3milion for post delivery complications?
This is so so wrong!! How much would they collect if they were to make a human clone???
The amount is just unacceptable, and finally she's dead now!
God please, may I not grow up to become such a doctor who ll value money over human life.

It's funny and amusing how people still continue to heap blames on Jonathan for the clear sin of LUTH.
I use to want to be a medical doctor, but with an experience I had with doctors of Bingham University Teaching hospital, I came to hate doctors with such a passion. May this death be avenged appropriately.

NO WOMAN SHOULD DIE WHILE GIVING BIRTH; it is one of the 8 of Millennium Development Goals. I stay in South Africa, where health care services is free in all government owned hospitals irrespective of your immigration status. It shameful that despite our riches in Nigeria, we still wallow in abject poverty through corruption, nepotism, bigotry etc. Imagine what alleged "missing" oil dollars could do to refurbish our comatose health sector? God will judge our leaders and one day, chicken will come home to roost.

Even as a private medical practitioner who needs money to run a hospital, I will not do this. If it is true that the woman developed new complications while in hospital and was refused new treatment, it is a serious medical-legal issue. The hospital must be sued for professional neglect, and the hospital and all medical professionals who attended to her must be brought to legal justice. Enough is enough in this country, I urge human rights lawyers in this country to take up the case.

Unknown said...

This is terrible news, and it's unfortunate she had to die due to negligence but I would like to raise 2 issues
1) I'd like to commend the protesters that brought this issue out in the open, hopefully this would never happen again
2) The family of the late woman should sue the CMD, LUTH and the Federal Government and make them pay damages to give the family needed financial resources to help raise the child, the funeral, loss e.t.c

This country is so annoyingly corrupt. Why should a woman- a nursing mother die like that. Besides, i thought teaching hospital bills were lesser. In Ondo state where i grew up, d teaching hospital treatment are free for pregnant women, nursing mothers, old people and children from ages 0 to 15 or 20. Can't remember. The system there is so organized and i really thank the Governor for making that possible. First of all, may her soul RIP. 2ndly, why are you all. Screaming. Bills went up almost 500 percent last year @ Luth, docs went on strike to protest, you called them heartless. 4 months ago, docs went on another strike and I recall one of their demands was total coverage of NHIS. As usual, they were called all manner of things. In fact, I am aware a good number of the Lagos docs were not paid for that period even though their colleagues were paid all over the federation. I have been at Luth for different reasons and at different times when doctors, nurses and even medical students contribute for patients treatment....i have never heard them celebrated.
This is the government we chose. One in which the only achievement in healthcare in 6 years is a miraculous victory over the spread of Ebola. My apologies, I also heard some good news regarding polio. It's sad that she died, unfortunately...many die everyday in less obvious ways.
While we do not want to blame the government, blame the system. The system is not the doctor or the president. It is you and I, we make decisions and take steps that foster mediocity and unaccountability and then we cry wolf? Shame on all of us for our contribution to her death. I have no political party affiliations by the way...but I like to call a spade exactly what it is.

Stay safe...mrsstephen

Anonymous 12:38, LUTH is a very expensive hospital. I had medical evacuation in LUTH in July, 2013 following a miscarriage and i was charged above 100,000. St. Nicolas charges about that or less. The theatre bill alone cost me 52k. And they were soo negligent. Post evacuation i developed complications and 4 months later, i found out that i had retained placenta. LUTH never thought it wise to do an ultra sound post evacuation. I would have died from infection from the retained placenta. In June 2014, i was pregnant and was being managed by a LUTH consultant called Prof. Ajayi. Can you believe he gave me ibruprofin when i had treatened miscarriage? I lost the baby because of Prof. Ajayi's negligence. I spent less than 1 month on admission in LUTH and in my ward alone, we lost 4 patients. I saw a lot that i cannot even talk about. My bedside neighbour almost lost her life, the doctors who where supposed to give her antibiotic injections every 5 hours for 5 day, came only once in 2 days. I kept calling the doctors on her behalf to remind them and all they told me that they will be there, but guess what? They never turned up. LUTH is the worst hospital you can go to on the planet earth. They are very negligent and do not give a damn what happens to your life. Go take AGBO instead of going to LUTH. Speaking from experience, our nigerian doctors re not good. The older ones stick to the old ways without updating themselves and the younger ones are with no much brains and are only interested in having an uptodate infrastructure and collecting all the monies they can wtout in the end doing anything. No educated Nigerian, should be medically negligent. I am a lawyer but know a whole lot about medicine now especially where it has to do with me. Do not trust your Nigerian doc 100%, they really dnt give a damn about you. Do not take any medication without reading about it. Always get a 2nd opinion when you are consulting a nigerian doctor. Our doctors know that they are not that good, our politicians too, our doctors and the politicians and thier children all travel abroad for medical treatment.

How are the doctors blameless here? What; suddenly they are zombies of the hospital management or of the government? They aren't educated enough to know what constitutes an actual violation of the Hippocratic Oath? Or to recognize a variation of it? When is it not their responsibility to be patient advocates? In what reasonable nation is it proper that a patient who has been discharged is still sitting on one of your hospital beds? Why allow it in Nigeria? In Lagos?? Do we truly desire to advance in healthcare? And if they weren't concerned about money, what prevented the doctors from advocating for this family? On whose side does their collective action show they are?
If this has nil to do with the doctors, why did they respond so callously to this family? Would it have been better if they used this case as a means to amplify their fight with the government for improved wages?

Of course the doctors are culpable! And why not, since they led the care of this patient?! Reading about Chris Bode was embarrassingly disgraceful. Both his style of leadership and mentality as exemplified in this situation do not represent values of the medical profession in any way, shape, or form. His cause should remain with the government who pays him or to the hospital management if he finds its style disagreeable. Aggression should not be extended to the patients or their families, especially not in an imprisonment situation like Folake's became. He ought to be a more resourceful leader rather than basically saying, "my hands are tied"- especially saying it so rudely and void of compassion as he did. I'll say nothing about the actual medical team that cared for Folake because it is known that a team is mostly as good as its head.
