LUTH acquires scanner that detects death in 10 seconds

Lagos University Teaching Hospital LUTH said they have acquired a CT scan equipment that has the capacity to run a check on all organs of the body, from head to toe in less than 10 seconds and fish out a patients death points for immediate treatment. The machine, called the 128-slice Aquillon CT scanner is the first of it's kind in West Africa.

Speaking on the machine, the Chief Medical Director, LUTH, Professor Akin Osibogun told Nigerian Tribune:
"The Aquillon CT scanner is a 128-scanner and the main advantage it has over other CT scanners of earlier generations is its ability to penetrate deeper into the tissues and organs to show clearly the state of those tissues and organs. Of course the CT scanner is an imaging device and because it is able to provide images of tissues and organs inside the body. We are able to see the state in which those tissues and organs are and we are able to make diagnosis that help us to provide appropriate treatment for the patients.
"Earlier generations CT scanners are of course far better in terms of diagnostic capability than the x-ray because they provide clearer definitions than the x-ray but moving to a 128-slice CT scanner, in fact, that it is in terms of where current knowledge is, with regards to ability to get clearer images of tissues and organs that are internal to the body and therefore we are able to make better diagnosis. A further advantage of the 128-CT scanner is its speed with which it works and that means it is able to capture parts of the body that are in motion.

“So the Aquillon CT scanner is a very fast machine, able to pick items in motion and that advantage enables us now to study even the heart as it is beating and as it is pumping out blood, so we are able to study the arteries, the veins as the blood flow through them, so if there is a thin blockage or a blockage is developing, the scanner is able to pick it.”
“So in coronary heart disease for instance, the scanner is a vast advantage over other imaging devices because we are able to pick them up early and we can then advise that patient on dietary changes or whatever changes that are necessary and if you have the capability, you can actually combine it with what we called interventional cardiology.
“You can remove small plague or small particles that are already forming on the way. It is just simply by introducing a catheter, you guide the catheter under the imaging device and go to where you want to go and remove what you want to remove, without opening the chest. The CT scanner can be combined to some extent with the interventional cardiology which we would introduce at a latter point. At this point because we just acquired the equipment, we will be using it largely for diagnostic methods to pick disease conditions and do that in a more precise manner.”
Commenting about possible kidney transplant in Nigeria, LUTH Chief MD said that the procedure was possible at the hospital with just N3 million but the donor must be a relative of the patient.
“Maybe if you help us make that public, that all they need to do, is to bring a relative who is willing to donate kidneys to them and with N3 million, we work them up, carry out the transplant and follow them up” he stated

OLODO PPLE LOL :)

Anonymous said...

LOL.... This is just silly. St. Nicholas Hospital has a better CT Scanner. The hospital remains the best for kidney transplant in Nigeria and West Africa, the standard of care is amazing! Trust me, I know.
The main problem with Kidney transplant is the drugs you have to take afterwards (post transplant drugs). They are expensive! Of course, the doctors at Luth won't tell you that now. Why do you think OJB needed so much money?

First of all Linda please rephrase your title. It doesn't detect death. The scanner detects things that could be wrong with any one of your organs. Detection, diagnosis and treatment will prevent death. The machine does not 'SEE' death.

Secondly, to so called 'US based medical doctor' :A CT Scan (or CAT Scan) and an MRI operate differently and are better suited for different types of diagnoses. An MRI is suited for examining soft tissue, (e.g. ligament and tendon injury, spinal cord injury, brain tumors etc.) while a CT scan is better suited for bone injuries, lung and chest imaging, and detecting cancers. CT scans are widely used in emergency rooms because the procedure takes less than 5 minutes. An MRI, on the other hand, can take up to 30 minutes!!!!

An MRI typically costs more than a CT scan so if LUTH can only afford a CT all well and good. One advantage of an MRI is that it does not use radiation while CAT scans do. This radiation is harmful if only there is repeated exposure. The CT scanner that LUTH now has is the LATEST TECHNOLOGY in the country (160 slice) because among other things, the radiation emission is minimal. The advantage the CT has over the MRI is that you don't need helium to cool down the magnet needed to work in the MRI.

So people please get your facts straight before condemning everything people are trying to do. We have cried that health care is on the decline and LUTH have decided to try and change that. But as usual, we complain AGAIN.

US based doctor please stay in the US and leave medicine to those who are using it to make a difference in their country.

All those claiming the blood of Jesus, even the healthiest and holiest people go for routine annual scans to check for things like cancer. Early detection is better than death!

Here are the facts so if you continue to claim to practice medicine learn the advantages, disadvantages and latest technological advancements, so that you are able to better care for your patients instead of collect and depositing corpse all over the county. Yes at The Johns Hopkins Hospital a renowned teaching hospital and biomedical research facility we are always looking at patient and technological advancements. When and if your ready learn from the best and stop being shortsighted when you could actually benefit from those that actually practice the science of medicine.

How much do PET scans cost, and are they reimbursed by insurance companies?
PET scans range from $850–$4,000, depending on the type of scan. Insurance companies will cover the cost of PET scans for certain types of cancer. Through NOPR, CMS is evaluating data to consider expanding coverage for other types of cancer. Because of the mounting evidence of the effectiveness of PET for the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of cancers, coverage levels continue to expand. For the most updated figures, check with your insurance carrier or physician, as the levels at which Medicare reimburses for PET are under review with CMS and subject to change.

I guess Linda was trying to say this particular type of CT scanner is the newest of its kind, because I know for a fact that Reddington has had an MRI and a CT scan for years - I've done check ups there before and had to use them.

People should try not to show their ignorance and not comment if they have no clue about things, if you have never done more than the regular x-ray or blood test before, please stop commenting.

Those machines cannot detect death, they can detect if you have a growth or clot or whatnot that can kill you if you don't treat it or if its too late to treat.

LUTH does not have a cath lab. so what is the clinical advantage of having a 128 slice CT. In-fact what is the advantage of having a 128 over a 64 slice even if you have a cath lab. This is just a marketing strategy by manufacturers.
For LUTHs current infrastructure, a 16 slice CT with a proper processing system would be most adequate.
Just a waste of Govt. money.
The problem in Nigeria is, people selling equipment, do not know what they are selling, and people buying, do not know what they are buying..

just to add to the long discussion.

luth had a ct scan before procuring this one . they basically upgraded to a much better one so as to improve their diagnostic capabiliites . so kudos to them.

luth also has an MRI (a PPP in partnership with fate foundation). the MRI has been working for several years too(though its tesla strength is not as high as newer models).
the challenge about the equipments is the poor power situation of the country and these equipments are very very sensitive to electricity flunctuations.

As much as luth does not have a cath lab (for now), i still believe the 128ct scan is still a very important aquisition. there are numerous other uses ......imaging of brain pathologies, pulmonary and cardiac diseases, evaluation of complex and articular fractures with very clear 3-d reconstruction, abdominal pathologies etc.
the diagnostic sensitivity has gone up several notches.
Also as earlier eluded, CT scan best to evaluate bony issues while mri soft tissue issues.both are as useful as long as used when indicated. ct scan is also very useful in emergency trauma as it takes only seconds to run unlike mri. and sometimes you need to do the two (ct and mri ) to get the complete picture of the problem.

Anonymous said...

Hi there. How much does this CT Scan cost?
