Police shoot sales girl dead, injure 3 others

A 20-year old sales girl identified simply as Lucy, was on Friday was shot dead by policemen in the Apo area of Abuja. The girl was hit in the chest by bullets fired into a photography shop where she worked as a sales girl. Three other people sustained gunshot injuries when policemen from the FCT Police Command fired bullets indiscriminately in an attempt to enforce the demolition order of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council.

The policemen had stormed the area around 7 am with officials of Development Control Department, who had come to demolish illegal structures. But residents and indigenes, who felt that the government had no right to demolish their houses when they were yet to be resettled, resisted the operation.

They claimed that the case was still in court and that their leaders had advised them to continue to live in the area pending the determination of the suit. As the policemen shot indiscriminately to control the residents, bullets penetrated into one of the shops and Lucy was hit in the chest. She was rushed to Garki Hospital, but she was confirmed dead on arrival. Her body has been deposited in the mortuary. Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Wilson Inalegwu, met the House of Representatives representing

AMAC/Bwari constituency of the FCT, Zephaniah Jisalo, at the hospital when he visited. Inalegwu, who was in tears, assured the lawmaker that the case would be investigated. “We are not sure what took our men there or what led to the shooting, it’s still a matter for investigation,” he said. Emeka Ani, owner of the photo shop, where the deceased worked, said that his sales boy also sustained gunshot injuries during the incident. He said, “From morning, the police surrounded our area. They said they came for demolition. All of a sudden, they started shooting sporadically. They shot into my shop and killed my sales girl. My boy also sustained injuries. Lucy has been with me for about one month. Her sister brought her for me from Cross River.” The National Coordinator, Greater Gbyagi Initiative, Mr. Gimba Baiza, described the incident as wicked.

WHO KNOWS WHAT IS GONNA BE NEXT.We are still goin through the ordeals of Boko Haram. The biggest problem is that the Country doesn't have the WILL to change. It's gonna be hard Long Road. All I can advice every one is to try to positively change his/her Circle of Influence. This Country's leaders & it's people doesn't have the WILL to positively change all they pay is Lip service. NYC-1 says: Ask an average police man in Nigeria what is "Due Process?" He will tell you that, that is 'oyibo'; that is, if you don't get a slap for that question. Enough of all these reckless use of deadly force, when there is no cause for that.

Nothing will be investigated; that is just POLICE SLOGAN. A situation where the Accused is also the Judge will only lead to miscarriage of justice. Jonathan should make every sincere effort to create check and balances in the Nigeria Police. This can be done by establishing a new Elite Force made up of retired military and police officers. One of their major responsibilities will be to Arrest and Trial police officers for misconducts and excessive use of force. Another function should be to ensure ...

I am just tired of saying RIP to my fellow Nigerians who are still full of life. Tell me, what is the investigation going to lead to? The end result will be: 'accidental discharge'; whatever that means. Investigations are done so that bad things don't repeat itself next time.

They use teargass, taser, and in extreme cases, wash the rioters away with the aide of fire fighters n their trucks. But the very exact opposite is d case in nigeria. This is really painful and it's an on going occurrence in Nigeria. Rick Ross shot a video in Nigeria and tons of people kicked off saying he portrayed us in a negative light!...really?? The world is watching and they see these things 24/7. Nigeria is a country where human life means nothing at all. Some people will take your life and that's it, on to the next!. No amount of prayer or positive confession will change that country. We are the ones that can really make the change happen. I am unsure if this will happen in my generation or even in my children's generation. A country where policemen can say "burn them alive" and simply get away with it. Nigeria is a 6th world country!

This goes to show how lawless and uncoordinated our Nigerian Police are, how can the DC of Police claim that he didn't know how his men got there, so who gave them the order to join the demolition team for destruction?

Instead of the FGN and FCT Minister to focus on infrastructural improvement, they are bent on making the masses suffer more in an already hideous society.

@ modupsy, it's not just about accepting responsibility, but rather taking punitive measures against rogue and venomous officers who randomly slay the innocent. They should even sack most of them & employ our unemployed graduates. What are we the youth doing sef? It's time to do a million man match to that freaking place called Aso rock sef. Occupy it until our demands are met!!

When it was time to display their power at Aluu & disperse the crowd, na run dem run. But to go do gra gra 4 innocent citizens, na that one them sabi. Technically, they have a hand in the death of the Aluu4. Corrupt hungry cannibals in uniforms!

The reason why NPF is like this is because reasonable people especially LIBers have refused to join the FORCE leaving room for the kind of fellows we have in the police force, that ll carry live bullets just to ensure that a demolition is carried out!
Nigeria with a population of 160M has only 300K police men according to the IG.
