Achebe hates Awolowo, Yoruba race, says Adebanjo

A leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, has faulted extracts from Prof. Chinua Achebe’s latest memoirs on the Nigerian Civil War accusing the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo as the initiator of the pogrom against the Igbo.

The memoirs coming 42 years after the war, Adebanjo said, reinforced “Achebe’s pathological hatred for Awolowo and the Yoruba race.”

According to him, the renowned novelist need to be cured of his Awophobia.
Reacting to Achebe’s memoirs entitled “There was a country,” the Afenifere leader in a statement on Tuesday said it was Awolowo who rather tried to prevent the war.
He said, “At the risk of his life, and against the advice of his cabinet colleagues, Chief Awolowo made contact with Ojukwu and met him in Enugu to dissuade him from going to war. In his one-on-one meeting with Ojukwu, Chief Awolowo tried to persuade Ojukwu to come to a roundtable conference with the Federal Government to iron out his differences with the government.
“Fair minded persons cannot accuse Awolowo of being part of the intellectual arm of a cabinet that intentionally initiated the pogrom of the Igbo, when in fact the record shows he took positive steps to persuade Ojukwu to avoid the conflict.”
Adebanjo said when the late politician visited Enugu prison during the war, he was surprised to see malnourished people even when adequate quantity of food were sent through international agencies to the civilians in the areas.

Following this, he said the Federal Government stopped the delivery of food meant for the civilian population hijacked by Biafran soldier.

He added, “This is what Achebe mischievously called the deliberate starvation of the Igbo. I would like Prof. Achebe, if he can; to make reference to any publication where Awolowo made the statement that starvation was a legitimate tool of war.

“One would have thought the charge of genocide should have been better directed at the leaders of Biafra who had first hand knowledge of the starvation in the area they controlled, and yet did not as they could, to bring an end to the war sooner before two million people, mainly members of future generations had died of starvation as Prof Achebe claimed.”

On change of currency, Adebanjo said since Biafran soldiers looted Nigerian currency from Central Bank locations in Biafra occupied areas and were using them to buy arms, Awolowo, as the Federal Commissioner for Finance, had to stop that.

I was not born during the war and have no idea what happened during that time. So,won't comment on that.
Having said that,it still puzzles me till today why it's so hard for Ibos and Yorubas to honestly and mutually co-exist.
Even here in London, it's so hard to see a Yoruba guy relate without prejudice with an Ibo guy. Same with the ladies .....A Yoruba lady, dating an Ibo guy would have a lot of explanations to make to justify to her friends and family why the Ibo guy is the right man for her.I feel the same way too...I don't know what it is but I just don't trust Yorubas, and I know THEY too hate me.We sure co-exist and relate the best way we can but we both know that we share a resentment about each other.

If he wants to defend awolowo's honor then he should do so without making it a tribalism argument and I respect chinua Achebe and his writings but he should have known better than to publish something this controversial....Nigerians will now go all tribalistic with their comments now *sits down with popcorn* #smh # teambiafra whoop!! >AmakaNnwaJesus

emmmm Food could have been deployed from the air (America had been doing it for years). If the soldiers were able to eat up all the food (as allegated) the food must have not been much at all.

This issue will continually be a problem, unless Nigeria acknowledges the war happened and studies it as part of our history curriculum.

Oh Adebanjo, can you have several seats? thank you.
whatever stopped you from writing your own memoirs? alot of people jump on the "Awolowo was a saint train" but we know the man was not. And besides, a memoir is meant to be the writer's perspective so, kini big deal. Anyway Uncle chinua, i adore you and know that writing isn't much without critics.
Please write us another book soon. Loads of love.

When i see the truth,I know it. I love the foresight of Awolowo and his fight to bring the best to his people. But being a national figure bestows on you the onerous responsibility of feterring for the whole nation. His tribal mind got the better of him in all his ideas and I believ Chinua Achebe was not far from the truth. Such a policy coming from a civilian is wicked at best and draconic at worst!

If Ojukwu had known, He would have left Awolowo to die and roten in calabar prison where he was serving his sentance for treason. But he decided to give him and the yoruba people a way to live up their dream as a people. What did he gain, a betrayal. let Adebanjo or whoever say what they want, Awolowo is a chisler. the same Awolowo encouraged his people to pull out of the party when Zik won election here in lagos. what other evidience does this man need.

"Achebe hates Awolowo and Yoruba people" this is the most preposterous and senile accusation of the 21st century. If I may ask Adebanjo why do peole like you and Femi Fani Kayode a pathological liar that has a case with the EFCC always indulge in a wild goose chase. Achebe account of the civil way is incontrovertible, therefore any attempt to smear this illustrious Prof noble objective, will end in futility. Let posterity be the judge.

My advise will be that y'all should be bygones to be bygones. Reconciliation and forgiveness should be paramount in our minds and not to start blaiming each other for policies instituted 40 something years ago in a war.

Lets discuss today where governors are starving their citizens by looting the state treasuries and the federal government is doingthe same on the federal level. Do we have a civil war going on now? but we still have a war going on, class war is worse than ethnic war. At least you know who your enemy is in a civil war but the war raging onn now is a war where the politicians are consciously making sure that the citizens are starved and deprived of basic necesities of life. Which one is worse? They're one and the same. So lets sheath our swordes and come together to find a way to defeat a common enemy, the guys looting the treaury in the name of governance. We all know the love Awo had/has for his beloved Yoruba tribe and you cannot fault him for that and he showed it by making the race the most literate of all races or tribes in Nigeria by way of free universal education in the Western Region. Which other leader in the Federation can boast that. Who KILLED MORE BIAFRANS DURING THE WAR? OJUKWU OR AWO? Go figure.

Bullocks - I have read the book, and Achebe hasnt said he dislikes Yorubas. These are memoirs from over 40 years and Achebe merely went by the facts that are available. He is not hallucinating or making up things. Starvation was a tactic used by the Federal Govt during the war!! Also - as great as Awo was, there are several historical accounts that suggest that he could be a disruptive element a times.

Mr. Adebanjo or what he calls himself is too economical with truth. "Biafaran soldiers looted the Central Banks in their area that's why Awolowo advised the Government to change the currency". That sounds childish and ridiculous. Quoting him again, "That Awo visited Enugu and saw malnourished people and was full of surprise knowing well they have been supplying food to them, he had to advise the stop the supply of food items to Biafara which is been diverted by the soldiers" It sounds crazy that a man at his age will be trying to defend evil knowing fully well he is nearing the grave. Is it not the same supply government do in Nigeria of today? Let me rest my case here.

Well as far as I am concerned there is no need of bringing up this issue of civil war now Gowon is not interested, Awolowo is dead, Ojukwu is dead as well.

Proff Achebe may have hated Awolowo due to the wicked roles He played during the civil war. Mr Adebanjo , you yourself know the truth and the truth they say is bitter. all you need to do is to advise Achebe to sue Awolowo in the international court for pogrom and genocide, that way he would be tried in absencia and sentenced to to life jail even though he is already dead

Adebanjo should actually write his own version - not that it would serve any purpose. Either side would always portray the other as being evil and reckless during the war. What elders like this should be doing is moving towards reconciliation of the various ethnic nationaliites, rather than further fanning hatred in this failed experiment called Nigeria

I'm so tired of this debate. It's senseless, foolish and ridiculous that Igbos insist on how Yorubas hate them so much and blaming Yorubas for Biafra War.

When in reality, Mr Ojukwu initiated it, because he wanted division, and he knew full well the war will only result in loss and death but continued because of his pride.

Igbos, always complaining about Yorubas killing them off, that has to be one delusional, playing the victim card mentality. Igbos, are enjoying the goods in yoruba land freely, they can't try that in hausa land. And, it's old news for igbos to keep bringing up tribalism when Nigeria has major issues to face.

They want to go their separate ways, they should go and let them see how it will end. It will be worse than Biafra war, and a stupid move. Igbos, use this for attention, they need to go do something better with their time and develop their villages and stop traveling, living in yoruba land if they don't like Yorubas that much.

Achebe should go to his grave peacefully and not plant poison into the next generation. Biafra has come and gone. It wasn't genocide as far as i am concerned. It was a war being fought and when there is war, the warring sides use all they have to win. He should not just raise unnecessary dust after these years.

I knew this book would cause more hatred among the tribes and stir up even more hatred and bad blood. NA WA OH!

I am interested in reading it but like every other memoirs it will be bias. But the videos I watched about the war, covered by journalists back then showed me most of the truth so I find it very credible...thanks to video proof of the disaster.

Even though dividing Nigeria isn't the solution to our numerous problems Biafra should have been allowed to go when they asked and asked and asked peacefully, before being pushed to the extent they had to declare war.

WHY WOULD AWOLOWO TRY TO DISSUADE HIM FROM GOING TO WAR INSTEAD OF LOOKING AT THE ISSUE AT THE TIME (STILL AN ISSUE TO DATE SEF...MHEEEW!!)????? WHY DID HE NOT SOLVE THE CAUSE INSTEAD OF ADDRESSING THE CONSEQUENCE?

So Ojukwu was supposed to fold his arms and listen to oga Awolowo? Really?! Like you would have done the same if you were in Biafra's shoes. Puhleazzzee!!

Come on now, the food was NEVER enough! Have u watched the videos to see the quantity of food?? Even the foreigners' had to be rationed too...let alone feeding prisoners. Come on, son!

So Biafran soldiers hijacked the food huh? I didn't see healthy well fed people in the videos I watched...so how did Mr Man come up with this allegation?! So easy for them to make up stuff from the other side of the country.

I think watched a video where someone said the stuff about starvation as a tool of war...not sure if it was Awolowo or not. Will have to watch the vids again. So right now I cannot really comment on that. But either way it makes sense cos stopping food going to Biafra meant they would be made to starve until they surrendered. It's common sense...whether Awolowo came out to say it or not, but it was an obvious thing to have done.

Bought arms from who?! Please tell us oh!! Or is this man denying that majority of the weapons the Biafran soldiers used man made? When will these people say the truth the way it is instead of always lying all the time and defending the wrong people just cos they are their fellow Tribes men, or in the same political boat, etc.

NIGERIA KNEW INNOCENT CHILDREN AND WOMEN WERE IN BIAFRA YET THEY BOMBED THEM....EVEN BOMBED HOSPITALS. WHY DIDN'T NIGERIA RETREAT? WHY OVER ATTACK SEF? AFTER ALL BIAFRA DID NOT HAVE THE ADVANCED WEAPONS NIGERIA HAD. THEY DID NOT HAVE THE UK, for example, SUPPORTING THEM. THEY DID NOT HAVE PLANES THROUGH WHICH THEY COULD DROP BOMBS.

THANK GOD THESE THINGS WERE CAUGHT ON TAPE SO THESE IDIOTS WILL NOT GET AWAY WITH THEIR LIES.

Mehn I don tire to type sef. Long live Naija. One day one day sha our troubles will be over. E go better. We just need to be rid of these our FOOLISH leaders. About time we let them know we wont tolerate nonsense from men who promised us heaven and earth. KMT!! What are we still waiting for? If only the jungle justice mobs would get together and handle business for his fellow country men..lol...not instigating violence sha oh, but they would deffo come in handy in such situations.

Ok lemme stop..I don begin vex. :(

Better a sworn enemy than a doubtful ally. Awolowo made Ojukwu believe he was an ally all the while getting into bed with the Nigerian govt. Nobody's talking abt that now. this is the root of the distrust that the Igbo and other cultures have for the Yoruba. Everyone has heard someone express the opinion that a yoruba person would make u feel they support u in ur presence and wuld stab u as soon as u turn ur back. The next time there is a pogrom in Nigeria, it wuld likely be against d Yoruba as there is serious distrust 4 them among all tribes of Nigeria. This is why the Niger Deltan militia called the bluff of war seeking Yoruba leaders after bombing the Atlas Cove jetty and said "u supported us when we were bombing our land, now u are complaining, u are insincere"

Yeah ... i can understand the feeling of missing out on a big thing and being lumped together with people you don't get..i mean the hausa's let's assume boko haram is a sect how long does it take to make every northener alienate them thereby totally excommunicating them;then there are the yoruba's no agenda for themselves;then the noble minority made to feel weak.
However, everything happens for a reason...we might all be body parts that need each other..i mean we all respect the easterner's for their efforts towards technology...alas long live Nigeria.

Adebanjo is being economical with the truth,is he telling us that the the Biafrans rooted the money that was in the central bank,so let assume that some biafrans rooted the bank they have to punish the whole biafran citizens for offense that was committed by the few that was pure hatred for the Igbos there is no two ways about it they should just accept what they have done and apologize to the Igbo nation chikina.

It is interesting u talk of Biafran soldiers looting the CBN. What did Awolowo do when lands belonging 2 Igbo people were stolen in Lagos and elsewhere? What did he do when Nigeria reneged on the Aburi accord he had signed to prevent conflict and created states without any consultation - a highly provocative set of steps to take? Nigeria wanted war, Biafra wanted peace, justice and security. Biafra declared independence in the face of provocation, Nigeria declared war on a people who had already had enough of killings. Biafra fought Nigerian soldiers, Nigeria targeted Biafran civilians - this is why Nigeria lost more soldiers and Biafra more civilians. This country has been built on the blood of the innocents and will die as so. The guilt for the war rests squarely on the Nigerian side. No amount of revisionism will change that. This is why ur average Nigerian is unwilling to discus the war without modifying the facts. They always say "let us move on, the war happened a long time ago". But they are willing to discus MKO and June 12. As if 1 person is more important than 12 million people. Injustice is injustice and justice not done now is carried out on future generations of aggressors. Awolowo and co fought alongside the north, now his people are complaining more than any abt boko haram. What goes around comes around and karma is not done.

I know Awolowo cannot do wrong by Afenifere bcos he is a demigod to them but he is a war criminal and a bigot. Any one who studied his history objectively knows he felt threatened by Igbo political leaders. He worked to subvert Azikiwe all d while telling him of his willingness to work with him. Funny how someone who said Nigeria is "only a geographical expression" fought for this geographical expression. He was obviously pursuing his personal interests and that of his people. Achebe is absolutely right on that count. Criticism of Awolowo shld not be seen as a hatred of Yoruba people. No leader has unquestioned antecedents - even Jesus Christ's message and history is questioned by scholars (very bad comparison, I know. The two shld nt be mentioned in the same paragraph). While he cannot defend himself, we must question his intentions and the actions he took and reappraise the judgement history makes on questionable characters. Today he is refered to as one of d founding fathers but was he really, and whose interests did he pursue?

Anonymous said...

There are all these lies and half-truths abt how Awolowo tried to dissuade Ojukwu from going to war. It was Nigeria that went to war with Biafra not the other way round. All parties that fought against Biafra are now killing themselves - the Hausa and the Berom on d middle belt, boko haram and all else in the north, etc. Nigeria was never meant to be. For those talking abt hatred of the Yoruba, read the comments on this post and if u can count how many times expressions of a willingness to kill Igbo people occur. The rest of nigeria is threatened and has always been threatened by the Igbo and are looking for excuses to kill them and yet would not hear any talk of their independence bcos they don't want a powerful nation of Igbo people looming large in the subregion. They do not want success in Igboland and wound fight 2 prevent it. When oil was discovered in Anambra, Kogi went to the same NBC that excised oil-bearing land of the southeast to neighboring states. When we want to dredge the river Niger to let our river ports operate, our neighbors complain of Environmental Impact Assessment. Thank God the flood has answered them, now the dredging must go on and be completed.

With due respect Pa Adebanjo is wrong on this one. The round table discussion was held, leading to the Aburi Accord, which Awolowo and co advised Gowon not to implement, thereby making Ojukwu to declare biafra. And for him to challenge Achebe to produce a document where Awo said 'starvation is a legitinate tool of war' shows either that Pa Adebanjo is bereft of history or old age is catching up with hi (in my culture, u can't accuse an old man of lying). BBC, CNN, The Times etc have the record where Awo said it times without no.

I dunno y the yorubas are bitter with this truth, if Awo was alive today, he won't be angry, rather he will admit to Achebe that he said such a thing, but will add, don't forget no victor, no vanquished, cuz I know Awo to be a man of his own words.

So the history of Nigeria can never be complete without the story of the war.
Wanna know more, read "The Making of an African Legend, the Biafra Story" by Fredrick Forsyth, a whiteman who recounts his personal experiences during the war. He wrote the book in Umuahia, where he based throughout the war.

@Naijababe, when u say Yoruba land, I hope Lagos is not included? For all you Yorubas who keep saying Ibos should leave Lagos, you are only displaying your lack of enlightenment. Lagos a one time federal capital belongs to no tribe. Y? Simply because while it was a federal capital, it was developed with federal money. Get that into your heads. Lagos belongs to us all! That said, Yorubas have the right not to agree with Achebe's book but instead of calling him names, they can get another respected person to write their own account abi? And for your information, it is not just the Ibos who dont trust Yorubas, it is all non Yorubas because Yorubas dont have the capacity to be sincere with other tribes. If you backstab and look down on other tribes, how do you expect them to love you? In my opinion, there is nothing special about any particular tribe in Nigeria. We all have our strengths nad weaknesses. Chikena!

xcerpts from papa Awolowo's responses to the starvation policy even before Achebe hadn't written anything...STARVATION POLICY
Then, but above all, the ending of the war itself that I’m accused of, accused of starving the Ibos, I did nothing of the sort. You know, shortly after the liberation of these places, Calabar, Enugu and Port Harcort, I decided to pay a visit. There are certain things which I knew which you don’t know, which I don’t want to say here now, when I write my reminisces in the future I will do so. Some of the soldiers were not truthful with us, they didn’t tell us correct stories and so on.

I wanted to be there and see things for myself, bear in mind that Gowon himself did not go there at that time, it was after the war was over that he dorn himself up in various military dresses- Air force dress, Army dress and so on, and went to the war torn areas. But I went and some people tried to frighten me out of my goal by saying that Adekunle was my enemy and he was going to see to it that I never return from the place, so I went.

But when I went what did I see? I saw the kwashiorkor victims. If you see a kwashiorkor victim you’ll never like war to be waged. Terrible sight, in Enugu, in Port Harcourt, not many in Calabar, but mainly in Enugu and Port Harcourt. Then I enquired what happened to the food we are sending to the civilians. We were sending food through the Red cross, and CARITAS to them, but what happen was that the vehicles carrying the food were always ambushed by the soldiers. That’s what I discovered, and the food would then be taken to the soldiers to feed them, and so they were able to continue to fight. And I said that was a very dangerous policy, we didn’t intend the food for soldiers. But who will go behind the line to stop the soldiers from ambushing the vehicles that were carrying the food? And as long as soldiers were fed, the war will continue, and who’ll continue to suffer? and those who didn’t go to the place to see things as I did, you remember that all the big guns, all the soldiers in the Biafran army looked all well fed after the war, its only the mass of the people that suffered kwashiorkor.

You won’t hear of a single lawyer, a single doctor, a single architect, who suffered from kwashiorkor? None of their children either, so they waylaid the foods, they ambushed the vehicles and took the foods to their friends and to their collaborators and to their children and the masses were suffering. So I decided to stop sending the food there. In the process the civilians would suffer, but the soldiers will suffer most.......

@deekay
Division of nigeria IS d solution.

Biafra did not declared war, Nigeria did. Biafra declared independence. Note that Ogoni and Bakassi declared independence and no gunshot and bombing has been heard over that. Let MASSOB organize a rally and watch how our armed forces will react.

Nigerians take the support of foreigners for granted in the history. Without their support, Nigeria would have lost d war. Their soldiers knew they were not fighting a just war and were motivated mostly by lies - "if u do not kill the Biafrans, they would invade ur home and kill ur family". it was during the war that Britain saw Biafran military strength matched nigeria's and decided to intervene on the Nigerian side. All foreigners supporting Nigeria did so, not bcos they thought it was just. They did so bcos they knew they could better control Nigeria and her resources with northerners ruling it. Besides, the british wanted their pound of flesh bcos of the parts played by the Igbo in nigeria's independence.

Hi linda,I hope u r nt only approving probiafra comments?anywayz Achebe is entitled to his opinion though. The ibos r there crying over spilled milk.War is not a child's play Anywhere in d world. All those who started d war r to blame for the 'genocide' against the ibos.Awolowo used his genius to break biafra's back.I'm not a fan of awolowo but on the war give it to him d guy was a genius. But unfortunately they still want to rule nigeria They need the yorubas to achieve dat.,Ojukwu had a reason to start d war but d abokis too had a reason to kill ibos.Awolowo was in prison wen d issues of the war started and to single him out for blame is @ best baseless. Why didn't ojukwu surrender wen d biafran kids started dying?I guess this achebe guy was one of those urging ojukwu on during d war.Why start a war without food security?Ojukwu could be brilliant academically but he failed woefully tactically..They did not put d yorubaman in d equation of the war. They erroneously thought it was a straight forward fight with d abokis. They were fucking sure of defeating d abokis Especially if d yorubas joined dem.The yorubas r rather intelligent folks love or loathe them(yorubas) Achebe was the only ibo leader i had regard 4, but with this unfortunate book i think he has taken a fatal delve into infamy. He didn't only insult awo he insulted all d yorubas..Overconfidence was their major undoing b4 and during d war its still their undoing till dis day.Ojukwu had a terrible idea of colonizing s/west and lagos. His troops were already @ ore in ondo state,He forgot war is won first by strategy not cheap overconfidence and empty bravado.2 distinguished yoruba officers brought biafra to its kneels. And a yoruba sage gave the federal forces d intellectual advantage.I'm not surprised dat achebe and ibos r still groaning in pains of bitter defeat in d form of unconditional surrender And Gowon said ''the rising sun of biafra has set never to rise again''Its just natural for dem to hate the yorubas because the yorubas nailed the coffin of their beloved biafra.Nobody makes friends with his conqueror.

Thank God pple are beginning to reason because actually u really need to be there before u can actually say what happened,i was not there but my mum told me that at apoint they were getting food and at a point the food stopped coming and they announced to them that Awolowo had ordered them to stop sending food to them,my mum told me that my pple stated dying like cock and even the biafran soldiers will fall on the ground and dying after a shoot and that was the reason why they started loosing hope because the security they had was depriciating.Gowon promised the cameroonians to stop sending food to them in the Ibo region with the promise to hand over the Bakassi.Awolowo till today is seen as a devil who was behind all these. He will push forward Mr Gowon to act while he will be in the hide normal Yoruba behaviour.

pls let not mix words here the problem i have is that of all these problems was in the process of moving the country forward meanwhile in the Yoruba states today the leaders are doing well with public fund while the Ibo leaders are busy buying over all the properties they could see and land especially in my Home town Abia State.

i think this is not the time for us to hate ourselves or fight we should stand high against bad leaders and make sure that public funds are used for what its mend for.

Moreso,if we look back we will be counting more death from bad roads, insecurity, poverty, bad health facility, unemployment, outright stealing by govt official etc.than we hear in biafran war.

it is well begins with you and me.

I usually dont comment on blogs but i need to do this.

First things first, Linda Ikeji's blog is filled with IGBO men and women who in their heart of hearts hate the yoruba people. No be today now. Just hear how they talk about Obasanjo compared to Babangida and you would realise how much they hate Yorubas'.

Secondly, some of you talk about why Pa Adebanjo had to respond to this, why not? Did Achebe think no one will?

Thirdly, where in the world do rivals at war feed themselves? LMAO! Did Achebe in his wisdom think the govt. (and Awolowo inclusive) would introduce policies that would boost their economy so they can have more power and might to fight better? Let him have a rethink.

Lastly, if the IGBO people try their republic of biafra again, I assure you another Awolowo will spring up from the GREAT and WISE YORUBA people and we will surely deal with you all!!!!

Enjoy!

it's funny how some non-igbo Nigerians are quick to tell Igbos to forget about the war when the social ramifications of that sordid event are alive and well...even here in Linda Ikeji's blog where you see hateful comments towards Igbos like it is the order of the day. My dear cupcakes it is useless to ask the victims and their future generations to "forget" when the perpretrators and their children live, breathe, and act on distant but potent effects of the war. Nigerians need to up their critical reasoning skills and think about why certain groups are the way they are for once. History bears studying to correct the ills of the present and safeguard the future. Biafran History will NEVER go away. NEVER. Not as long as Nigeria exists. You cannot wish away the ghosts of the past.

Honestly i must say that during the civil war in Nigeria, alot of intellectual minds were called upon in the executive council of which late great CHIEF AWOLOWO was one of them to come up with how to keep Nigeria united and certain measures were taken. The main focus at that time was to win the war and if after many years these issues have come up again through the memoirs of no other than the great erudite who was privy to these information. If he hadn't named names all of this noise won't be arising so please let us learn from the past events and know how to make amends and move forward. It's not about what who said or did,but that there were casualties on both sides so we should learn to live together as one for the good of our great nation. The so called lords of that era have still found themselves in government and still dictating the pace of the country through themselve or relatives......Please ENOUGH IS ENOUGH let's move on...

Muna said...

Ayo Adebanjo is a loose talker. An agbaya, please ignore his rantings. Bola Tinubu has made him very irrelevant. They worship Awo and he can never do wrong. But it is a known fact that Awo started tribalism in this country. My parents told me a lot. How they lived in Lagos in the 50s with no tribal issues. Now Yorubas refer to people from Edo, Delta, South Eastern states as 'aje okuta, mamomi, omo ina, yibo, yuomiri etc, really sad. The average Yoruba man thinks he is so superior to other tribes in Nigeria. Sad.

naijababe said...

I'm Edo, but I'm team Yoruba. I don't have any problem with Igbos but I get tired of them whinning and complaining how Yorubas hate them. Igbos talk bad about Yorubas than Yorubas talk bad about them. Yorubas are very cultured, and people see it as being as tribalist, I don't see it that way.

And this topic is old news because Chinua Achebe is not only talking about his experience, he's stirring up the pot.

I don't need any glasses, I read clearly. Igbos bring up tribalism than any other tribes. Adebanjo is responding to Prof Chinua Achebe. Other tribes don't trust Yorubas? who cares, every tribe don't trust each other. I can say the same thing that I trust a Yoruba than an Igbo, but that's generalization. You judge people individually.

What I meant that Igbos should stay in their villages is, if they feel like Yorubas hate them so much, then they should avoid intermingling with Yorubas or living in a more yoruba populated places. Nobody is forcing them.

There's no major tribal conflict in Nigeria, so why do Igbos like to run their mouth constantly and spread lies to people and their children how they are mistreated. Abeg, Nigeria should face important issues.

All the tribes will just keep dividing, and then tribes within tribes and then religions within tribes...etc. It's never gonna end . People just need to be educated and need to learn to love.

All these ppl with so much bitterness in their hearts against their brothers and sisters ,all in the name of "he's igbo, she's Yoruba " will still be the first people to wake up and attend church service. Whatever happened to the lessons your colonial masters taught me about the white Jesus?! It's ok to act all holy holy and god fearing when it suits u,huh?!

You would think by now this generation would have more sense than this, instead of following in their parents and grandparents' footsteps hating an entire tribe for events they didn't even live to see. You would think they would be more objective and tolerable of each other by now. How many years later and you are still as bitter and intolerable of ur fellow man. These are ur fellow Nigerians. People u work with and see on a daily basis. Wow! U guys no get problem at all. Mchew! There are more important things u should be hating like bad govt!

Which way, Nigeria?! Let's find a way to move forward and fix Nigeria. Let us learn to accommodate each other and our differences. There's a lesson to learn from the civil war.

It was the betrayal that shook biafra. You even pointed it out yourself. The fact that biafra wrongly assumed the yorubas would be behind them. (The whole ojukwu/awo wahala.

It's done and dusted. Let's hope it never happens again. We should join hands together and fight against corruption instead of against our fellow brothers and sisters because of the tribe they belong to. I don't understand how a whole country can be slated cos of the action of one man. (Perfect example right now is boko haram/Islam/Nigeria) We can do better than this.

At the end of the day no reasonable man can say one tribe is better than the other or whatever cos that would just be silly.

Lets make Nigeria our heaven on earth. Let the colonial masters who must be laughing in their graves right now be put to shame. Let us prove to them that even though they put us together for their entertainment we have turned it around and made a great name for ourselves.

And on this note I will no longer be commenting on this issue here, or anywhere else. Think of the lives lost, especially the innocent nigerians/biafrans caught in middle. Anyone who wants to be silly and carry on hating millions of people should feel free to. Their headache not mine.

No be the tax ur father dey pay fashola dey use do wonders in lagos. Meanwhile ur governors are doing the same thing awolowo accused biafran soldiers and igbo elites of doing, they don't give a shit about the ordinary igbo citizens. Just see d flood, erosion, roads etc. See d wonders south-south governors are doing for their states. Anyway, the difference between awolowo and ojukwu is Awolowo thought of his tribe before any other thing, ojukwu thought of himself before the average igbo man. If not he won't have fought that war. The sage said...

Emmm, that was actually thought and trashed cos, it was thought that the same planes used in airlifting supplies could also be used to bring in weapons.

Pls note that that most of the aid during the war was not sent over by the govt directly, but by international agencies. With the US in support for Biafra, it would hav been easy to stockpile weapons with the planes while ppl died of hunger, Ojukwu would have more weapons while also showing the world (which he was doing then) the deaths due to starvation.

Awolowo proposed a food corridor with international agencies of both US and Britain making sure the food got to the civilians, Ojukwu shut the move down, claiming anything coming in must come through the military.

A lot of ppl don't know the half of what happened in a war they were forced to participate in. For others that know, they had to channel the pain of what happened somewhere, d north wouldn't stick cos they lived by the gun and Blood anyways, and so the yorubas became easier targets.

There's a lot more info not shed here abt the war and that's why its really disappointing to read of achebe's myopic view of it.

D truth of d matter is we d youths dnt need dis useless debate bc so far all I c dis generating is more confusion n hatred. Digging up old wounds n all sort of misconceptions. I'm an Igbo n to be honest after watching a documentary on d Biafra war I had a rethink. I dont know wat role Awolowo played in dat incident bt judging by most comments here, I realized he did play a pivotal role in ensuring d defeat of Biafra which for dat has a blame. Also for Ojukwu, I dont know much abt him bc I neva cared to. However, d little knowledge abt him dat I remember reading abt is dat he was a very well educated man bt one with an ill temper. N so far I have not seen a person who has a temper issue and didnt mess up or make a mistake at some point in his or her life. I mean great mistakes nt just d ones anybody can make any day. Yes Biafra was defeated. Its ntin to be ashamed abt n its not as if dey would become slaves in dis country if Ojukwu had asked dem to surrender. Yes at dat time d war was for a good course bt seeing dat he(Ojukwu)'s war strategy n supplies werent enuf to guarantee victory, I believe as a wise leader he should hv ordered d Biafran soilders to surrender n by so doing limiting n reducing d horrow dat was unleashed on d igbos. No he didnt. He being an adamant man kept fighting, ordering young boys with no experience n hungry soldiers to go to war against a well fed and equipped Nigeria army. Dat for me is d height of madness. In a nut shell wat I'm trying to say is both parties made a terrible mistake in d past n d now generation shouldnt for any reason be infected with their madness bc d last time I checked d Igbos, Yorubas n Hausas hv grown past dat hatred for one another n are rather working towards building a firm n strong Nigeria. Why should dis man called Achebe write dis piece of shit and publish it at dis time oof unrest in d country? Let d sleeping dog lie. Even a stupid man would know wen a finger is been pointed him.

I c every human being as one regardless of deir tribe, race, ethnicity e.t.c I luv d human race n I cn live, love, work wit anyone regardless of where dey are frm. Hv we taken time to imagine or wonder wat or how wonderful dis world wld be wit such a mentality? Lets leave these monsters alone wit their evil views. Views dat will only cause more havoc n confusion dan gud in dis country. Y didnt he Achebe publish dis book years back? Wats d big deal in d book dat took 40yrs to write? Is he a prophet dat has to wait first to hear frm GOD before he writes? Why cnt we read behind d lines for ones in dis country? Are we d youths n now generation so blind to see dat these so called elders cnt offer us anything gud? Dis country is an embarrassingly blessed country wit excess resources wich no country in africa or even some in d world can cum close. Bt yet we are d laughing stock of dis continent n even d world. All tnks to our greedy n self centered elders called leaders. Dey say d words of d elders are words of wisdom. Unfortunately, d words of almost all our elders dat has been in power frm d beginning are words of greed and wickedness.

Even if anyone is responsible for wateva in d past, let us not dwell on it. We are d youths n future leaders of dis country n let us not implant dis demonic views into our conscience so dat we will nt live in sentiment against one another. Is their anything wrong with an Igbo loving a Yoruba? Or an Hausa loving an Igbo? Why do we allow this thing called tribalism punish, kill and destroy us? In case we do not know tribalism is even more deadlier than racism. We need unity and not segregation in this country. I wish there can be a sort of forum that will be created or put in place to empower this vision of UNITY in our country because so far I think that's what we lack the most and that is the reason for so much confusion and backwardness in this country.

Just to correct those saying the book isn't out, it is here in london and sold out already in all d the bookstores tk me ages to get one.

The sage said...

I really am slow to lay any blame on you, and others. U've never witness a war nor come to a full comprehension of what actually goes on in war situations. They are quite different from the films u watch.

USA dropped the just developed most lethal non-biological weapon, nepone bombs and burnt down two cities in Japan in a night. Killed thousands of mostly women and children. When they saw how successful it was, they decided to clean out 5 huge cities in a week! Death toll: more than 100k. The bombs just burnt ppl to death! Imagine that population, in WW2. Defensless ppl. Did u hear abt it until now? This is different from the nuclear weapons used o.

Its unfortunate what happened during the civil war, and this is the most any yoruba person can get abt it, but asking for all the rights and fairness in a war (dat u asked for) is pushing reality too far.

The point made was that food meant for civilian population were going to soldiers who were d govt enemies! Its tactically sane in any war not to feed ur enemies (the soldiers) fighting you! Else the war is just a joke!!

Unfortunately he (and quite a good number of the igbo fore fathers) has.

I was making a point in a earlier post about how issues like this will drown other issues like d aluu campaign when ppl such as yorubas who are supposed to help the cause decide to siddon look, due to a constant defence of and from the umbrage of an ungrateful set of people! The thinking "they have the biggest mouths yet are always the ones getting into trouble" will simply make the rounds.

Igbos cannot do much on their own in this country, heck they don't even like themselves! Unfortunately for them, the best form of help they can ever get can only come from same yorubas. Unless, they want to cover their eyes with ego running into a political storm that's sure to get them brow beaten a second time. But then again personal ego has always been their bane.

You are obviously not well informed on why and how the war started, what happened during the 3 years of war, and what happened after it ended or you are deliberately lying about it.

For someone your age, say the truth or better still, keep mum. Is Achebe the only respectable person that have pointed out Awolowo's activities that you people have always tried to sweep under the carpet.

Was Kwame Nkurumah of Ghana also Awophobia? He cursed Awolowo, didn't he? Ghanians think less of him than Achebe does.

Did Awolowo not tell Ojukwu at a meeting they had to declare Biafra and he will follow suit and declare Oduduwa only for him to run to the Hausa's after Ojukwu declared?

You must really have a twisted perception of yourselves and the way ppl see yorubas.

I can tell u, ur absolutely wrong, and unfortunately too. Yorubas are seen as too receptive (especially of ur ppl), and ponderous on how to deal with your glutinous, infrastructure wrecking, always complaining, never leaving, vain glorious tribe!

Have u even stopped to ask "why us?"
You were victims of a war u brought on urselves, and u complain abt someone on the other side for not helping you out before, during and even after the war!

Look at youselves! Why are u being singled out everywhere! Check it out, majority killed in the north, most of south east asia and china have huge records of death from same tribe. Its not cos ur successful, cos a lot of you aren't legally and there are other successful tribes too. Its cos ur full of yourselves over nothing.

Ur ppl are the most vacuous of all tribes in this country and I've seen quite a lot of tribes.

Conversely, there's none of the corpers I know, yoruba or not, who had gone to serve in ur places and didn't have a sad tale to tell; who couldn't wait to get back.

Utterances like yours are only catalysing the slow shifts quietly taking place in the southwest. Continue to run ur mouths like sludge. When it hits, you'll think its biafra 2.0

Nigerians looted the money. Biafra had its own currency so Nigerian money was not a legal tender in biafra during the war. My grandfather showed me the notes so aint guessing.

Who told you yorubas don't have an agenda for themselves? If there any tribe that has full program, complete with several options of breakup scenario; it the yorubas.

We had been at it for years, and even at particular points in time, tried to convince representatives of the plausibilities.

Unfortunately, ur ppl again hate everyone, but for the right amount, are ready to forever tie ur destiny to the whims of other tribes.

We have our ways of thought,we like it, its what ur forefathers saw and wanted a part of. How u have over time, come to this pass is however anyones guess.

God forbid that South-South be joined with Ibos. They are lazy and their men play draft from dawn till dusk while the women fend for their battalion of kids. Infact, the kids fend for themselves. Go to Warri and you'll get the picture. Their states are so under developed cos they are waiting for govt when Ibo communities try to develop their place by contributing money among themselves.
Pls let them go their way. We don't have things in common and only birds of the same feather can flock together.

Where in Nigeria have you been to naija babe? Fear no go let you as you guys travel in packs or you won't venture to step out. I have been to the North, West, South and none can compare to Eastern Villages. An Ibo man might be renting a flat in town but have a mansion in the village. Investment advisers now use that example when trying to advise people not to build big houses they don't really need but to invest the money else where so in terms of development, you have no option but to hand it to the East.

The Igbo race will die complaining about the pogroms, Awolowo just showed how smart and intelligent a man can become using the tool of Education, Achebe is not only a hateful bigot, He is also a bad example of an elderly who kept an opinion for over 40 Years in mind and has injected same into the minds of younger Igbos who are oblivious of the wars and now express their disgust without understanding to the Yoruba People. See what Education can do to People, The concern of Awo for education sent every Yoruba boys and girls to schools, The Ibo say they can survive by Business, They have not been able to develop their Cities, They have moved enmasss to Lagos and has deface the city selling on roads, despites selling Fakes and engaging in quick fixes without attention to details. They are angry they are behind. maybe they would have loved it if Awolowo advised that their food be poisoned instead of stopping it. Achebe's reputation will go down since he has touched the greatness of Awo instead of saying the truth about the stubbornness of Ojukwu who actually caused a war to continue against peace. Fashola is making the Ibo's pay through their nose for living in Lagos.

The Ibo's were shaped by the war in ways Nigeria did not expect. They thought they had broken them when they handed every account holder 17 shillings regardless of how much you had in your bank acct b4 the war but what they did was to create generation of resilent and hardworking tribe with high business acumen. So Nigeria, thank you for the drive you gave us without knowing it.

Hello, yorubas will speak up when we see wrongs being done. It is also widely known that igbos don't speak when something goes wrong unless and until it concerns them, then they cry to heavens.

We are unfortunately learning that behaviour from you. Check the stats, ur ppl are the ones being killed the most. If we complain its because we want to see a change for the better.

The informal and formal links yorubas have, politically and otherwise with all other tribes will take another generation for igbos to achieve.

If yorubas still decide today that u should go, you'd be surprised at the number of tribes that'll gladly oblige. Am very sure the north, middle belt and most part of south south would have no qualms. Think aluu again.

The sage said...

He is one of the founding fathers. His achievement are still insurmountable till this day. Am a product of OAU, if you've been to that schl, u'll understand what economic mgt viz-a-viz education is abt, and that's just one example out of very many.
Point of correction, yorubas don't follow anyone like a demigod. Awolowo all his life had yorubas who constantly questions his thoughts and actions. Its a product of knowledge and enlightenment dating before even awolowo, he only built on it.

He's been d most labelled as a tribal bigot because his experiment with his tribe worked the most!

He called nigeria a geographical expression because that's what he felt it was, is he wrong? And that he said so was for nigerians to fix the mess, by working on what binds us together or breaking up. It didn't necessarily mean he wanted breakup. The closest to what he was actually suggesting is a Sovereign National Conference. Its still relevant today, and that's what the yorubas still ask for. If we are true to ourselves, our history and the way view ourselves, we'll know that its the needful.

Most igbos only live in the west to plunder it. They care abt little else, for the history, until history knocks on their doors.

The sage said...

Sir/madam, you better open your eyes. If u want to go, its your own ppl that will stop you.

You can't even want to go! Else u'd have gone. But for you to even go, u need to start by gathering in ur states and fight from there. See if we'll stop u.

Yorubas granted may be ponderous, thoughtful etc, but half of what has happened to you can't happen to us without some serious questions and our future together being asked. For what sef? We are no danger to any tribe including igbos, we don't go out of our way to look for trouble. We can't even twist out own stories to suit us cos there'll just be some of us who'll be opposed to it and take us up on it accordingly! That's the way we are. Its what has brought us this far.

But I ask, why don't igbos say something about the north, who slaughtered their officers in retaliation, had a govt and cabinet full of their ppl; and went to war against igbos as representative of nigeria, not yorubaland?!!!! Isn't this what the war history is about?

The sage said...

Take it easy and get ur facts right. Its attitude and talks like this that get ur ppl in trouble.

Lagos was made a federal capital at some point in history, it was never one abinitio.

Having said that, only some parts of what we call lagos state was federal. Ikeja for instance was part of southwest. And developed with its money. Federal part I think started from yaba down to the island.

A lot of igbos, who by the way want to secede, marathon to lagos and other states with false and conflicted sense of entitlement, and never really slowdown to learn the nuances of their environment.

Get your heads out of your bullocks.

If Awolowo were really a fair-minded person as Adebanjo would want us to believe, he would have condemned the killing of Igbos in the North, before the declaration of independence by Biafra. Biafra only declared independence, but Nigeria declared a war to stop Biafra from seceding.

Onyema Patrick said...

Like Seriously, I am beginimg to lose respect for a lot of Yoruba leaders, they tend to be unneccessarily reactionary and combative to the point of splitting hairs and making all sorts of uncanny and petty statements that are besides the point.
Unless this Adebanjo guy is referring to some other article written by Achebe or just having an adrenalin surge, I fail to see in Achebe's article culled from the london Gurdian where he accused Awolowo of being part of the 1966 pogrom. The premise of Adebanjo's argument is totally misplaced and unfounded, he did not seem to understand what Achebe wrote or better still he had not read that article, he prolly was just voicing out his blind support like many of his kinsmen even without having read the article, the reactionary comments of many Yoruba leaders trying so hard to defend the indefensible.
Achebe did not say anything new, I am a young Igbo youth with some knowledge of Nigeria's history and I understand for sure that Achebe was not attacking Awolowo but his hypocrisy and his resort to opportunism when he could have been a better mediator.

How can a leader with any sense of moral decency suggest a starvation policy that will largely affect innocent by-standers of the war on the other side of the divide as a means to winning the war.

This was a civil war with the federal side having all the support and military might to use better strategies to win the war with less casualties why resort to a policy that they know will kill innocent by-standers of the war on the Biafran side. It was not like the Federal side was under any serious threat of annihilation from the Biafran side?
Or was it just a case of pure inherent hate, opportunism, and sheer callousness on the side of the Nigerian government and her collaborators ganging up against a region whose dominant tribe they share a tacit hate for?

It is even more unfortunate that the collaborators instead of showing remorse and regrets for their bias and opportunistic involvment to further their own cause, they have continued to be in denial, they will lie, revise history and even spin suggestive statements as facts just to cover up their hypocrisy and backstabbing antics.

I don't have a problem with Awolowo's animalistic statements like "all is fair in war" or "why feed our enemies fat to fight harder", in fact, he revealed his true feelings in the latter statement, when he called the Biafran side, "enemies" even though he hypocritically put up appearance as a neutral mediator trying to talk sense into the actors of the war, my grouse is the open denial from these collaborators posing as some mediators.
This same inherent hatred from many past Yoruba leaders is seen even in present day Yoruba people, they are so quick to downplay the severity of the 1966 pogrom that had Hausa men and women having a feel time killing innocent Igbo people living in the north en mass all because some of their leaders were killed by an igbo dominated coup plot. Instead of condemnation from these hypocrits, all they do is try to rationalize such actions.

Awolowo was fully aware of the fall out of his policies towards the igbos, he saw the war as an opportunity to deal a big blow on Igbos' influence and interests all over Nigeria. His 20 nigeria pounds policy was deliberate, only a dishonest Yoruba person will expect the Igbos to be full of praise forAwolowo, a man that continued to churn out policies to undermine them even after their utter loss of the war.

Really!!!!!!!! The Yorubas won't let the Igbos go? Why is that exactly? Because you can't survive without them or what? Or you are the stooge of the British people?

And it would really be a failure on the part of Britain, because they did the wedding (amalgamation) without the permission of the couple (individual tribes in Nigeria).

I think the Igbos would be let to go now, because everybody (Niger-Delta, Igbos even Middle belt) all want to stay on their own now, except the Yorubas as you, Anonys* rightly said.

Enough said, really if Nigeria weren't this big, some of these misbehaving politicians would have been handled the traditional way. They know...... So it had better work.

This really sucks and you want me to believe it?

Anonymous said...

Linda, I thought you were never going to post this heated topic. I actually saw the debate on Nation newspaper and commented but they never published my comment making me believe they have taken sides in the issue. This is disappointing for journalism.

People like Ayo Adebanjo should view Achebe's write up on its own merit and not on ethnic levels. He said Awolowo advocated starvation of the Igbos during the war. Some have said here that it is his own strategy to win the war and that in war situations you do anything to win. I will grant them that because I dont really know the international conventions guiding wars. I hear that Geneva convention is definitely against starvation but I'll still study it. The food in question is even food brought in by international donor agencies who could only land their airplanes in Nigeria and then go into Biafra by road yet this was blocked.

But what will these same people say about Awolowo authorizing the payment of 20 pounds to Igbos after the war irrespective of whatever amount of money they left in the bank before the war. Will they still call this war strategy? This is sheer wickedness anyway you look at it. And to think that No Victor, No Vanquished was decleared after the war yet Awolowo did this suggests of a grand plan to incapacitate a people with ones perceived advantage.

I read a publication where Awolowo said he did not take this 20-pound decision but that a panel did and he only approved it when it got to him. My question is what kind of Minister would approve just anything that gets to his table without checking the merits and demerits? That kind of Minister is definitely not a good Minister. He also said that ACB branches where looted and burnt and as such there were no records to show how much people banked. Was it only ACB that Igbos banked in? What of BBWA and Barclays and even ACB branches in places not affected by the war like Lagos and Kano? Who could have destroyed the records in these places? Some folks were even able to protect their bank documents during the war yet it amounted to nothing.

What I believe the Awolowo family and supporters should do is to come up with their own facts and then we compare notes. I have read in the news where a lot of Yoruba people are insulting Achebe not because they doubt what he has said (because they haven't put forward any counter facts) but because they believe no one has the right to mention Awolowo's name. This is where I disgree with them. Awolowo, irrespective of whatever he did for the Yoruba nation, was human and his actions or inactions should be said without fear. He was not God and never can be. Do we fear him? Capital NO. Do we respect him? Maybe YES.

People like Okurounmu has said that Achebe is senile and has never hidden his hatered for the Yoruba just because Achebe mentioned Awolowo's name. Another Yoruba man said Achebe is angry because he did not win Nobel price like a Yoruba man. People will just make a mess of themselves all because they want to be seen as defending their ethnicity. You can insult Achebe all you can but I say come up with your own facts guys! Enough of these sentiments.

It is on record that Ojukwu/Igbos out of their magnanimity released Awolowo from Calabar prison where he was locked up for treason. They could have easily killed him and claim it was part of the crisis but they let him go unhurt. How did he pay them? He joined the government that put him in prison and started dishing out anti-Igbo policies. From now on, all the truth will start coming out for all to see.

This is not a Yoruba/Igbo war. It is statement of facts. Spare Achebe please.

I respect Prof Achebe as a novelist no doubt, but accusing Awolowo of starving the Ibos during the war sounds so naive to me.
Where on earth, or in the history of wars won and lost did he get information that either of two warring factions was sending food or aids to their enemy...
Ojukwu went to war bcos the Hausas were killing Ibos in the northern part of the country....
Hausas reason for this; an Ibo officer (Col. Chukwuma Nzeogwu) killed their idols in a coup....
In the resultant war, Biafran soldiers were advancing towards Lagos(bcos it was the federal capital) and were already at Ore....
Awolowo was a Yoruba leader, and the safety of his people could have been too dear to him....
Then I ask two questions; if Ojukwu had problems with the Hausas killing the Ibos in the north, and he's mainly declared independence and not war, why take the battle to the western part of the country and not the north ?
If anyone was in Awolowo's shoes, will he rather sit back and look, when a war is two hours drive away from him, or just an hour to his home town?
In my opinion, Awolowo did what had to be done given the circumstances; and Prof Achebe is as biased with this accusation as he was during war, and I'm not disappointed at all...we are only but humans.
Looking forward to getting a copy of the book anyway.

When u are faced with genocidal enemies, u don't want them feeding u. One who said starvation is a legitimate tool of war would probably poison u if he controlled the food corridor.

Those who say Awolowo tried to avoid conflict, what effort did he put into the correct execution of the terms of the Aburi accord? The actions Gowon took after the agreement was wrong. Did Awolowo point that out to him?

@tegar
U have a lot of what Awolowo said after d war. What about b4. What was he telling Ojukwu versus what he told Nigerians. He was a typical lying politician looking only 4 his own interests. How genius is it to talk about food supply to prisons in a war torn country and compare prisoners with soldiers. That is the stupidest thing I have heard in a long time.

Some say d Igbo shld leave Lagos and other parts of Nigeria. Well we are discussing what ur ancestors did when the Igbo tried to. They killed men, women - even pregnant ones and cut them open to kill the fetus inside - and children. The Igbo saw they were not wanted in Nigeria and decided they did not want to be part of Nigeria. They thought they wuld b allowed to leave like Singapore was. Well, it was only another excuse 4 bloodthirsty Nigerians to kill more Igbo people. Even today on this post u see people writing if u try to leave again we will attack u.

For Niger Deltans who think the Igbo still think of u as a part of a future Biafra, don't flatter urselves. We don't want any part of the Niger Delta that is not Igbo. Even Igboid tribes that do not want to be in Biafra are not wanted. U have a large number of Turks in Germany, Turkish like ethnic Ughurs in China. Nobody is forcing them to be part of Turkey. We don't want Niger Deltans in Biafra except they are there on business. We need trade with u more than we need ur friendship. Ur ancestors hated the Igbo but still traded with them long b4 there was a Nigeria. In fact the Ijaw economic system was much dependent on Igbo traders. If ur ports are going to be of any use, u have to sort ur own internal conflicts and work with Onitsha traders. Right now Lagos is taking all ur port biz ness away. When the Onitsha port is done, which the Deltans have fought against instead of improving their own ports, the Niger Delta ports will be severely hit.

The sun newspaer to be precise, an igbo kidnapper that was just caught by the police said he used some of his proceeds from kidnapping to build a house in the village for his mum. Yet u people call it industrous, how many of u igbos commenting here or your fathers can beat ur chest that they are not doing anything illegal? U people hide under nigeria meanwhile na una tribe dey spoil the country name pass. Go to ghana hear, not to talk of southy! Or europe and asia. Haven't u seen the published names of the some of the prisoners abroad, 90% are igbos and u call it industrous? Building houses and driving cars through crooked means. That's not industrous. That's greed and selfishness. That's why ojukwu did not end the war when he would have. And when he did, he ran for his life. The yorubas think of their race first while an igbo man thinks of himself first before his family and before his tribe.......

I hear this sort of "Why attack Lagos and not d north" sentiment and I am surprised that it is espoused by educated people. If America and another country were fighting, let's say England for the purpose of argument, would England attack Kenya just bcos Obama is from Kenya? U fight a war to win, not to be stupid. New York and California wuld b d first and second points of consideration. The civil war was one of Biafra versus Nigeria and Lagos being the economic and political capital, was the most important target for Biafra to cripple a murderous enemy and end the war. Anyone knowing the basics about war strategy wuld agree. From Lagos, if northern aggressors are still a concern, Biafra wuld have broken their ability to wage war.
The only reason Nigeria won the war was because of foreign assistance. Britain is no longer a super power and are less inclined to interfere militarily now in our affairs. This is why Nigeria gave up Bakassi Iike a pussy. The British did nothing when France brought war planes to Cameroon in support of their claims. So don't think Nigeria can pull through another conflict, internal or external. Our leaders know this and act accordingly. It is therefore important Nigeria works through her issues. Avoiding uncomfortable conversations about the past or present is not going to help us in negotiating the future. We MUST think outside the box. Nigeria was not put together by God. We can start to talk about regional autonomy for the regions, this conversation must not be taboo. Spain has this system and some regions like Catalonia recording budgetary surplus are the ones bailing out the central govt. We cant continue in a system where the center is unwilling to succeed and is unwilling to allow other areas to succeed bcos "if they succeed, they wuld secede". If any region decides to secede, it is not a bad thing. Many new nations have resulted from secession in Europe and elsewhere whilst we, unwilling to countenance any such talk, are having citizens dyeing trying to go to the same Europe.

"The yorubas think of their race first while an igbo man thinks of himself first before his family and before his tribe"

That is called individualism. It is the principle on which american democracy and economy is built on and they are very proud of American individualism. People who criticize Igbo for this are the same ones doing American visa lottery and going to pastors and babalawos to travel to America not to mention other stuff they do to get visa, did somebody say Oluwole. Individualism on the economic front is a healthy disposition as it breeds competition - a fundamental part of capitalism. I am proud of Igbo individualism.

Sorry see why I keep saying illiteracy runs in ya blood. Have u heard of inland waterways. Onitsha port can never be like porthacourt or lagos. Onitsha port can only accomodate very small vessels. They cannot accomodate heavy duty so whether u like it or not, u will always be dependent on lagos and porthacourt. I can almost bet wiv my life that if nigeria should break up, anambra will break away from south-east! Igbos are never united especially when money is involved. Anambras don't marry outside. Imos don't trust people from there, so ur problems are plenty. See as ur people have started selling ur birth rites again to jonathan to run for second term just because of niger bridge, later u guys will say ure marginalised! the usless onitsha port, no be oil money they one use build am! When the chips are down now u idiots will say the port was not built wiv oil money! Start solving them then maybe people will start respecting u.

To hell with One Nigeria!!!! With the kind of hate comments I've seen here I think Nigeria should just divide already! I've actually not known that the Igbos and Yorubas hate themselves this much, this post is a real eye opener!!! Unfortunately no one is commenting objectively, everyone is biased and using stupid criteria as a basis for comparison.

A lot of people keep saying that Ojukwu allowed AWolowo out of prison. This is untrue. Gowon released Awolowo bcos he needed him to become the commissioner for finance. He (gowon)needed a super intelligent being like Awo to help with the war and that is why he released him.

its true that igbo governor are all fucked up but igbo individually are superstars. check the average GDP of citizens in nigeria, igbo are high on the food chain. we are all enterprenuers, very good at turning nothing to something and lastly independent individual. yorubas claim the have more education but go to every university apart from the owners of the land the second highest in population is igbo students. so where is the rational that yorubas are more educated. other tribes just envy us just like american envy chinese for slowly taking over their land. nigerians watch out we will soon take over like the chinese even in your own land.

Yoruba ppl aren't loyal, you troublesome Igbo ppl have forgotten the 1st first military coup that took the lives of Akintola,Brigadier Ademulegun,Colonel Shodeinde....what did they do to deserve such gruesome deaths, all because of Kaduna Nzeogwu's thirst for power. What abt Adekunle Fajuyi who stood his ground and said Aguiyi Ironsi couldn't be arrested or touched, wasn't he killed because he was trying to defend his Igbo boss. How many Igbos can do that? All u think about is urself!
so u blame us fr refusing to join in a war that we knew nothing about. We were tired of being the ones to receive the blow.
Achebe cannot malign Awo's name and expect Yorubas to fold their hands. Ko Jo mehn.

Igbos think they can twist history to heal their battered ego. Let's even talk abt Nigeria bfr the war,Nzeogwu's killed Ahmadu Bello,Tafawa Balewa,Akintola,Ademulegun and his pregnant wife and Colonel Shodeinde. Why dint dry kill Zik or Aguiyi Ironsi?
We Yorubas cut our losses n moved on but the Hausas, who Achebe should hold responsible for genocide, wouldn't forget easily, they killed u people in your thousands then, they are still killing you.
Yoruba ppl cannot be trusted, what about Adekunle Fajuyi, didn't he die alongside Aguiyi Ironsi when theophilus Danjuma wanted to arrest and kill the latter.
Ojukwu released Awo's from prison,it is obvious that illiteracy runs deep in you ppl's lineage,it was Gowon through the 1966 coup who granted Awo pardon.
Aburi accord broke down because of different interpretations by both parties. Ojukwu and his big Oxford English confused Gowon who didn't even know better.
It's not just Yorubas who've a problem with u ppl,the rest of Nigeria does. You ppl are too greedy! Ambition is one thing, greed is another. Even as malo kill una lik fowl reach,u ppl still won't leave the north. Yoruba ppl r bad,dey r tribalistic,u carry urselves like goats to ur villages during December just to intimidate one another(at least the rest of Nigeria can rest from all your noise)just when we think we can relax and have some peace and quiet, you ppl start rushing back again! Lemme ask you, what is stopping you ppl from staying back in ur individual states? If Nigeria divides today,na una go dey find visa to enter the new states.
U ppl should change for the better !

U are a typical ignorant Nigeria thinking anybody not Yoruba or Hausa is Igbo. Are all residents of Warri Igbo? Is Warri an Igbo town?

Anonymous said...

The first coup plan was made by Awolowo and group. The riot in the south west informed the first coup. There were Yoruba officials among the coup planners. An Igbo official was killed in the first coup. The aim of the first coup, among other things like ensuring stability, was to make Awolowo d head of state, the same man who betrayed Biafra. Stop the lies. It was not an Igbo coup. Pregnant women were killed by the crazed Nigerian counter coup, cut open and their fetuses killed. What did they have to do with the first coup? How can anything a few officials did justify genocide. The real reason for d genocide is the ingrained hatred of Igbo and the coup and lies told about it are unacceptable excuses to justify the killing of the Igbo. If Nigerians felt slighted by the Igbo bcos of d coup, why did they not allow them to form their own country like they wanted to?
If Aburi accord broke down due to different interpretations, why not seek clarity or renegotiate it? Why create more states without consultation? Please come up with better lies. Nigeria wanted war hence the provocation.
Talking about illiteracy, there is a difference btw release from prison and pardon.
I keep hearing stupid stuff like why dont u stay in ur states. It's bcos Nigeria wuld not stay out of my state. When Biafra tried to leave why did y'all not let us go as much as u hate us? Why are Yoruba populating Britain?
To the commenter that say To hell with one Nigeria, I agree with u. Nigeria is, to quote Awolowo, "a mere geographical expression.". It was never meant to exist.

Be able to understand written English b4 u talk of illiteracy. I never said Onitsha will overtake other ports. I implied that the reliance wuld be greatly reduced. I want the Igbo to trade with their neighbors. Mutual dependency fosters mutual interest. If we dont trade with them, they will struggle and will want to kill us bcos prosperity fosters jealousy. Why do u think India has a trading policy with certain countries like Bangladesh that ensures India sustains a trading deficit with such countries? Why do u think south Korea sets up businesses in to employ North Koreans? So that envy will not make them look 4 people to fight with. I want the Niger Deltans to improve their ports and encourage economic growth in their region and not import kidnapping into the south east like they did recently.

Block heads!!! Gowon took over after the 2nd coup of 1966 but Ojukwu refused to accept him stating that Adebayo who was the most senior officer after Ironsi should take over. As a result, Gowon never had any authority over Eastern Nigeria until after the civil war. He did not even step his feet on the region.

Awolowo was locked up in Calabar Prison which was under Ojukwu's jurisdiction and rule. If Ojukwu did not let Awolowo go, there was no way he could have left the East..

Get it straight when you are told that Ojukwu practically released Awolowo from prison.

Ojukwu's military invasion into the West was to scare Gowon out of Lagos so he can go and join his fellow Abokis in the north.

Gowon too is an apology. He signed Aburi Accord without understanding all it contained thus leading to Ojukwu's secession and the war Gowon decleared. As if that was not enough, Gowon also signed off Bakassi peninsula to Ahmadu Ahidho and Cameroun without understanding what the map he was shown entailed.

He yet again committed blunder as Head of state by saying that the problem with Nigeria was not money but how to spend it thus alerting the white men who began to tighten up some polices against Nigeria.Yet Gowon is today called elderstatesman.

Umu ofe mmanu ndi olodo!!!!

Yoruba people are too passive. Igbo people should say bad things about hausa leaders, we will show them fire. If Igbos hate Yoruba people, they should stay in their eastern villages, and the mansions they claim to have.

Igbos want division, go and create the Biafra country. keep in mind it will be worse than Biarfra war, because Nigeria will fight back. Hausas will join in too. Now, we can document how Igbo people will destroy themselves. They will be the one to lose.

Those who keep saying "leave Yoruba land but we will kill u" prove my point on how Nigerians feel threatened by the prospect of a powerful Biafran nation in the subregion. Why not kill the Ogonis for declaring independence. U want to stop hearing abt Awolowo's war crimes, stop telling us about MKO Abiola. The Nigeria- Biafra war was a greater injustice. U think the story of the civil war has been distorted, it has been distorted from the Nigerian side. Why do u think it is not taught in schools? Bcos it was an unjust genocidal war.

@nonsense
You dropped the challenge, I accept. Nonhausa Nigerians are all agreed that your leaders from the north are rubbish. The sardauna was trying to sell Nigeria back to the British after independence. Ahmad's Bello violently put down the Tiv uprising in the north. Your leaders and people do not step into a region without fighting with the locals and coveting their land, destroying their crop, raping their women. We are all agreed that northerners are the problem.
The Igbo people in the north are capable of defending themselves. I do not advocate violence but it shld b let known to northerners that no one monopolises violence. U want sharia, why don't u want fiscal autonomy to go with it? Nigeria is a secular state and my tax money must not be used to fund religious courts in the north.

For peace loving northerners, I apologize if this seems to generalize and I know a lot of u feel insulted when confused with Hausas of Fulanis. This post was directed at @nonsense and violence-prone, addled brained people like @nonsense.

I find it so disgusting how Yoruba's go all over the internet pretending to be south south and it's so easy to tell they are yoruba. They do not even try to hide this things. YORUBA STOP PRETENDING. THIS IS WHY EVERY TRIBE IN NIGERIA CALL YOU PEOPLE COWARDS. Learn how to fight your battles proudly. Stop dragging others into your fight indirectly. God what an annoying tribe. YOU PEOPLE ARE YORUBA, You have no connection with south south. As far as SS is concern, this biafra argument is between you people and Igbo. STOP PRETENDING TO BE US. Gosh.

To the Igbos on this forum, most of the so called "SS" talking about leave Yoruba land, we won't join you in Biafra, etc are all YORUBA. I don't know why they always pretend to be from SS.
