Ahmed who is a mechanic in Southeast London forced his wife, to cook, clean and look after his mother from 5am to midnight every day after the mother-in-law moved to England in 2012.
She said he also slapped her in the face when she asked him to consummate their marriage. She said one time he threw tins of cat food at her head and another time he covered her face with a cushion.
Iram who had a master's degree in Islamic Studies, was not permitted to leave the house alone and took an overdose before eventually calling the emergency services in 2014, the court heard.
Ahmed was found guilty of holding a person in domestic servitude, Judge Christopher Hehir told him: "She was bullied and controlled by you, given little money and expected to cook, clean and look after your family as if she was a skivvy.
"She described your behaviour as physical and mental torture and in my judgement, she was right."
He was sentecnced to 2 years in jail.
Ahmed became the first in England to be convicted of keeping his wife "in domestic servitude".
The couple are now divorced.

In Islam ur wife has a right to say I need maid and u have to pay as long as u can afford it. What the man did has nothing to do with Islam but everything to do with the age old belief that women are meant to serve men. If I remember my history correctly there was a time in Christianity that the only time a woman enters the church is to sweep and clean and women were blamed for "original sin". I don't know whether the bible those people were following is the same as the current one or something has changed. What I do know is that Islam expects me to respect my husband and vice versa not worship him and if anybody decides to do otherwise it is his own choice and it shouldn't be blamed on d religion. I read a story about a pastor who slept with women in his congregation and what came to my mind was that what d pastor did was wrong not that since the pastor is a Christian then Christianity allows it. Pls people do ur research, not everything a Muslim or a Christian does is representative of his religion if not one can conclude that fornication is part of Christianity the way Christians talk freely about themselves having sex before marriage.
