Olu of Warri’s death officially announced, adults to wear clothes inside-out for 3 months

The Warri Traditional Council of Chiefs yesterday at Ode-Itsekiri in Warri, Delta state officially announced the death of the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwase II. After announcing the demise of the Olu, Chief Yahya Pessu, member, Olu Advisory Council and other chiefs also announced Godfrey Ikenwoli Emiko (pictured left above) as the Olu-designate.

Chief Pessu said the Itsekiri people world wide will immediately proceed on a three months mourning period and as part of the mourning activities, they will be expected to wear their clothes inside-out; that is to tie their traditional wrappers upside down.
“All Itsekiri adults both male and female will put their clothes inside out throughout this period of mourning. No party, no drumming or merriment of any sort in Itsekiri land, until the burial is over and new Olu installed” he said.

In May 1952 the government of Western Nigeria with Chief Obafemi Awolowo as head changed the title of the Itsekiri ruler from the Olu of Itsekiri to the Olu of Warri, at the request of the Itsekiri, they were supporters of his party-Action Group and a close ally of Late Alfred Rawane, a prominent Itsekiri Chief. The Ijaw, Urhobo and other people of the community objected to the change, since they felt the new title implied that the Olu was ruler of Warri, not just of the Itsekiri. That was the genesis of the trouble in Warri.

He has gone to meet his ancestors. He will surely be missed in Nigeria and most especially by the Itsekiris. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace. God bless Itsekiri.

I don't still understand why the son of olu of warrior was disqualified because his mother is not from itsekiri or Edo. He desrves to take the throne not the brother of the deceased olu

Three months rag days allowed. Wonderful. What a sight to behold!

Na lie. That kain nonsense no fit happen.
The man Na born gain

Unfortunate focus for a community with so much human need. Sigh. People are already in rags due to hunger and deprivation. No need to turn the rags inside out. No one will note the difference.

So because Olu die, make the indigenes craze for 3 months? Shio!

This is hilarious,RIP Olu. Hope u made things right with God b4 ur demise

Nope d late olus son is not meant to take d throne at all apart from d fact of his mother his late dad wasn't meant to be d king.dis new king is d person who was meant to be king 28yrs ago but his mandate was stolen by his elder brother th late king.in itsekiri land it is d son dat is born on d throne when d father is king dat is meant to be king if rotated to d family again.even if d late olus wife was itsekiri or Edo he wud still not have been king bcos he has a younger brother that was born on d throne but dat ones mother is urhobo.so d person dat was deprived of his kingship has taken what rightfully belongs to him after his time dey can do d rotation to another ruling house.

When they say wear your cloth inside out it doesn't really mean you will wear in completely inside out, you can do that if you wishes to but you can just fold the under of your trousers inside out.that will be enough. ....proudly itsekeri
