School resumption: GEJ pleads with NUT, says Govt isn't foolish
Speaking with journalists today September 16th in Abuja,
President Jonathan appealed to members of the Nigerian Union of
Teachers, NUT to return to the classrooms on Sept. 22
as there is no known case of Ebola in the country at the moment. Below is what he said...
"We
have been able to manage Ebola and the whole world is happy with us and
we must tell the whole world that we have managed Ebola and no Nigerian
should be segregated because of Ebola. In
fact Osun State was to have their festival and the news came to me to
cancel it I said no, Ebola is no longer a threat in Nigeria and we must
tell the world that we have been able to contained Ebola."
Yes,
Ebola is in the West Coast, it could happen in Ghana, it could happen
in Senegal or any of the West African countries or beyond but they have
not closed down their institutions. If we still have Ebola definitely we
will not open any of our institutions but we don’t have Ebola. I
dare ask is NUT saying that until the world is able to end Ebola is
Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone before Nigeria should open our
institutions? It is not right. Government is not a fool, it is not any
labour body that asked us to take that decision, we took it because we
felt that we must protect our citizens.
This
is one government that discusses with anybody that has issues to
discuss. Even NUT has no reason to threaten industrial action because of
Ebola, the governors took that decision. I called all the governors of
the states to come with their commissioners of health. On
the day of that meeting I did not even allow them to speak because they
will play politics. I asked all the commissioners including the
Secretary of Health in Abuja, to brief us on the steps they have taken
and they listened to their colleagues because it was also a peer review
process. If you are hiding certain
things by the time you hear your colleagues you will go back and get
things done.
We are sure that even if one mad Sawyer comes again, nobody
will contract Ebola. We have managed Ebola very well, the world is
happy we must tell the world that no Nigerian should be suspected of
Ebola and that is the position of government. I
will plead with NUT and other unions that this does not require
industrial action. They should commend government, they should work with
us, they are Nigerians, all Nigerians must work together to make sure
that we contain Ebola. Why do we want to create problems where it is not
necessary, it is uncalled for.” He said
Ahh. I dunno who to side, whether it's NUT or FG but FG shud provide the equipments n gadgets they requested, and also train the school officials it is simple as A B C
He has Spoken well, and really Nigeria government tried they managed it well,we must commend their efforts but I feel they should tell us what measures they have put in place in public schools especially i.e. sanitizers for these children.
Bros, and you have to plead with them? If they ain't ready for work then hold back their salaries. Secondly, am disappointed in the fact that even the President still wont allow Sawyer rest in peace. Why call him "mad" Sawyer? I can bet the man did not mean to infect others but only sought for cure to his ailment.
I totally second this. What I think NUT should do is to put measures in place in case of necessity. Well done GEJ, well done FG. Well done DoroLinda on your new ride.
Lazy set of people dey dnt wnt to go back to school cos dey are being paid, had it bin it was d Oda way round dey wud ave pleading to go back to class mitchw.nigerias are nt positive at all always believe in negativity.grace b
Must people here supporting d presidents decision on school's resumption definitely have no kids.... If they do dey will be worried and will support NUT
My presido am sorry I support the NUT here, in all your long story you have not yet told us how you will protect our children, what are those steps taken ir provisions made in all the institutions in Nigeria to show that is safe to resume, well I no blame u,u and your so called governors and health ministers has non of your kids schooling in Nigeria so you wan kill our own for us...
Naija oh! 1st it was university dat went on strike dn polytechnic nw secondary skul dnt want to open again....infact ehn! Make everibody go open shop#GBAM
He needs to address the nation and tell them what plan he has to protect the children and then begin to implement that plan. The minister of health did a good job yes, but we need the job to be completed. Until then, I support the NUT in their decision to postpone resumption.
U are really very ignorant. Who are u supporting? Their request is different from the president's point. Where is the money set aside for Ebola and others raised by high individuals & institutions? They promised to even train teachers and they didn't. NUT is not made of fools. They know what they are saying and govt is there embezzling money. I've always sided Jonathan before but from this, I've seen his real person. He is highly corrupt. No wonder he couldn't fight Boko Haran. Who knows the pledge he has made to them before he became president in the first place?
Publish those schools where the necessary training and materials have been effected, and those that have not. Then parents can decide for themselves whether the suggested date is ok. What could be simpler? Use statistics to buttress your point. We have to learn to be properly transparent and avoid appealing to sentiment. Will the outside world replace any Nigerian children lost because Schools are not yet ready to deal with this potential epidemic crisis? No they will not, and cannot. So publish those commissioners that are effective and sanction the rest. Help us hold our officials to the highest standard. This is what we need now from you GEJ, and we will not forget such executive action.
Don't mind them mr presido. So ghana, senegal, togo and other west africa countries will shut down there schools cos of ebola fear ba? Those teachers are bunch of lazy bones and me think NUT is becoming partisan, playing politics. I watched obama last nite on cnn during his press conference on how they plan to tackle Ebola scourge, all through his press conference;I only heard Siera leone, liberia and Guinea been muted and no single mention of Nigeria. And that's good news.
Real ode oo. Sawyer purposely infected those workers...he pulled out his IV line on numerous occasions exposing d nurses to his blood, vomited on ppl, denied coming in contact with any Ebola patient...mr pope pls change that ur name
Guys, lets be clear on this.I do think what NUT is asking for is control measures to be put in place in advance.I do agree with them, cos if this menance resurfaces from our schools, there will be holocaust
Plz if u dnt knw wat to comment beta shut ur mouth,4 those calling teachers lazy I pity dem cux d dnt hv an idea of wat teaching is abut,am a teacher, oga jona if u wan hold salaery fine nd gud,we shuld resume skul by monday abi? Ok.ur minster said he will train teachers, listen to me public that dnt knw wat d r saying,no teacher has been trained,no preventive measures have been taken,if truly d hv managed ebola nd is no more,we suggested d stay up to 21days to make cure there isn't any oda ph doctor again,so that it dosnt tk us by surprise, imagine if a child had ebola nd no wan knws, till it strts manifesting, wat do u tink will happen in dt school,hv u asked ursef, can a child less dan 18yrs go tru isolation nd quarantine?plz stop writting rubbsh, especially wen u dnt knw wat is going on
What exactly does NUT want to do as their own contribution to fighting ebola? Must the govt provide everytin for them? Don't dey have PTA associations? Everybody wants the govt to do everytin for dem, and yet some thieves at top echelon of NUT will steal all the funds if govt gives them. Playing politics to steal money.
It is a pety I went to some skuls during dis 3weeks I find out dat no hand sanitizers or what ever means to take care of dis little kids only skul like corona and green spring dat manage to have dis things but were only two and out of da two only one is working and presido da talk of going back on 22nd I am not a mother yet but I knw wat it feels when a child is sick hw there body will be as if there spirit is not more wit them• Do the govt even care abt dis children? Dis month is over why can't u allow dis children finish dis month at home den start on oct as u av early said it is u govt n presdo dat is bringing in confusion to pple why can't u corporate becus of some selfish interest da govt got•u pple think da kids r one of ur instrument u use as a politics una say some thing of resumption and could not even stick to dat agreement wat a country I am from ur yes can never be yes presido ur three kids r they in nija? Governors ur kids r da in nija• Plz I thought da NUT is da body for skul why popnosing into da affairs of them? U govt keep making things hard for us•in lag da group of prostitute went to govt house to protest dat dey av no customers again dat da will enter da street wit guns u pple came out da next day to say no ebola again •u don't want war broda jona as u said then let da govt wait becus dis month have ended abi u no knw say kids r da joy of their mother•no mother will for give u broda jona if any thing happen to dis kids oh
I don't totally trust the government on this issue. Let them give us time to watch this ebola situation before they resume schools. At least let them give us till, next month! That's me stand!
our government can lie, so when they say they have successfully managed ebola, I kinda find it hard to swallow! but did anyone notice GEJ's gbagaun in the first paragraph?
I support NUT 100%. Jonathan wants schools to resume on Monday, but what training and equipment have been given to our schools? I pity public schools because for most their infrastructure is so dilapidated that there aren't even efficient toilet facilities, not to talk of running water. 490 people are still under surveillance in Port Harcourt and even the FG admited that they could come down with Ebola at any time. Though the government has done a good job, until ALL those under surveillance go through the incubation period without getting the disease, then it is too early to start dancing. Isn't it from those under surveillance in Lagos that the nurse escaped to Enugu and the ECOWAS diplomat escaped to Port Harcourt (spreading it to people there)? I read what the 2nd doctor that had the disease went through. Imagine a child going through that. All these politicians that are insisting on rushing our children back to school don't have any of their own children schooling in Nigeria. People should be worried that with the Government’s usual style of putting the cart before the horse, have not taken adequate measures to safeguard our children BEFORE they resume school? All that effort being put into telling parents how irrational their fears are should have been put into showing, not just saying what has been done to protect the children. Prevention is better than cure.
Bukola, aba!! we have all called Sawyerr different names you inclusive so because Mr. President use the word 'mad' now he don sin abi. Abeg pack well jo.
NUT did not say they wont go back to school, they ll ask the government to put measures in place in schools in case issues comes up and needed urgent attention. Let the government use the money appropriated for ebola and also the one Bill Gate donated and provided gadgets for the teachers and adequate provisions for the student. Should we wait for another persona contacts it before we start taking precautions?
we don't have to send our kids to school to prove to the world that we've eliminated the Ebola threat. The Osun festival can wait and as such shouldn't be placed over and above the lives of our kids. What we need is visible signs of equipment and vaccines that can be used in case of an outbreak. With that, the common man will have 100% assurance to send their kids to back school
All of u supporting NUT are ignorant...claiming love for your children. is it only in schools that you can get ebola..why not close down churches, mosques, supermarkets even the parties these children attend while on break...do all these so called concerned parents lock their children in isolation rooms at the moment?...lazy teachers looking for excuses to sit at home
Every tom, dick and harry call for strike at the slightest provocation. And they still get paid for work not done. Is time to find a permanent solution to this problem. The government have done well. And the president has enough to worry about. Let NUT find another means to be relevant.
@Pope, this is d most pathetic statement I have read since d Ebola ish in Nigeria!! Are u ok? Or u need psychiatric help ASAP. Na wa oh!!! U de yarn oh...
jonathan u stupid fool, were did d one billion used in combating ebola go, abi una don chow am finish, luk at mouth lyk one mad sawyer, idiot, i wount vote for u again cuz now i see ur truely mad
I surport mr presido on this.bcos. Even if n.u.t refuse to go back to school,re we now sayin that its only school ebola can b contacted?....what abt market, bus, garden and other social gatherings.that means pple shuld lock them selfs @ home untill teachers deside to go back to school na.lazy teachers.
Not for once did the president mention any preventive measures that has been put into place in all the schools. There's a lot of controversy in play here.Just as there's been in a lot of things happening in this country. (case in point...dollars found in jet from south africa) This is appalling...Nigeria, we hail thee.
d presido is right abeg, haba NUT na bcs FG go pay una g d lazinex dats y una no won resume, d FG re trying jux for once make una appreciate dem, oga Jeo u talk abeg
Even if der's no case of ebola FG shuld just put up some protective measure for d kids in primary and secondary skols atlist it wuld't tak them much to do dt,
Anon 12:02: God bless you. You are either a good parent or will make a very good one if you are not yet. You spoke my mind exactly. GEJ is just concerned about scoring cheap points because all i read is about "showing the world that we have contained ebola". I did not see mention of any preventive measures. Ebola still exists even if it has been "contained" here. So the kids resume, most of their parents travel, what if God forbids anyone brings "something" and that child takes "it" innocently to school? Instead of the man to talk of provisions that have been made to schools, eg regular supplies of cholrinated water, hand sanitisers and what not, things that will alleviate every already-frightened parent's fear (like me), he is busy talking about showing the world that we have successfully managed ebola. Oloshi agbaya. Oya, force or beg the teachers back to school o, shebi you will come force the kids out of their parents homes. Such insensitive talk from an insensitive president/government.
How has the government assured us that ebola has been contained? A government that does not have control over the identities of its citizens. How do we know there are no secret clinics all over with doctors like the one in Port Harcourt? What measures are being put in place to ensure that our children are protected when they go back to school. How about the public schools? As a mother I am anxious to see my children back in school however I am not ready to put their lives at risk. How do you teach a 5 year old to watch out for the symptoms of ebola? We have to be SURE our children will be safe when they do go back to school. Please FG, do not use our children as scape goats. Thank you
if sawyer wanted cure he would ve said that he had ebola disease immediately he was admitted in that hospital but instead he wanted to leave and spread it more if not for Dr stella Rip. say what you know
Everyone is asking what the givernment has done to protect the children. What have parents done to protect thier children? I'm just sad that Nigerians are making an issue out of a no issue. These same children we are protecting are the same ones that have been attending summer school and sunday school, why should regular school e an issue. There is no Ebola in Nigeria again, let's all be positive.
U ignorant fool calling someone ignorant, d money set aside 4 ebola is not wit d president rather its with d ministry of health. If u have a conspiracy theory 4 embezzlement, u shuld know who 2 blame not mr president. N/b; wen making an opinion, do it without insulting anoda person making his own opinion!!!
Jona, u really try for this one. If you can handle other cases in Naija as you handle this ebola, Naija will be a great place to be. benotekcomputers@gmail.com
hmm if u ask me i support the nut 100% in dis make we de sure sai ebola no de again. the govt nd ma presido should provide preventive meseaures period.
Schools should not resume When nigeria is free of ebola! Ok I don hear, have bought hand sanitizers for my children and am going to donate some to their schools,if you like keep your children at home is a matter of choice mine are going to school on Monday, nonsense schools should not resume yet you go to market, church, mosque, work, political rally! Your kids even attend sunday school and ilekewu orisirisi.
Pope,,,just look at d way u are exhibiting ur stupidity. He should hold back their salaries???what had ur government put in place so that schools can resume? they promised to train teachers but they didnt.....and u are here spewing rubbish.am sure u have no kids yet,,that is why u care less. Speaking about Sawyer....how can an American citizen seek better health care in Nigeria of all places??what happened to going back to his home country,America ? Even Nigerians travel to other countries to seek better health care . think well before u comment.
You are saying teachers are lazy...right??? have u asked what measures the government has put in place in schools? they promised to train teachers....have they been trained??? Did u think of d grave consequence if this virus should make its way into any skool??? You may take ur child to school monday,, that's if you have any...cos if u do have,,, u wont be in a hurry to send him/her to school knowing fully well that no measures have been put in place.
PTA associations??? how much did u ever contribute whenever d school calls on u??? am sure u are one of d parents who always complain that schools make too much monetary demands on parents/guardians. Ebola is/was a national issue...so d government should deal with it.
For ur information, parents have control over their children in churches, mosques and supermarkets while in school parents leave their children in the care of others for most of the day. From the way u r talking, it is very obvious that u r not a parent. Wait to have ur own children before u come here to mock parents for their 'so called love' for their children. If u don't have anything intelligent to say, it is not a must to comment.
You are d ignorant one here. Teachers are not saying they dont want to resume....all they ask for is d necessary measures to be put in place. is that too much to ask? Dont get it twisted.
It is not by force to take my children to school. Preventive measures should be put in place and the 21 days incubation period observed so there are no surprises. How do I tell my 4 and 2 year old not to play with their friends in school. I support NUT 100%.
that splendid mr president, let us work together NIgeria and caste out spirit of fear, i strongly believe there is nothing like EBOLA AGAIN IN OUR COUNTRY

(case in point...dollars found in jet from south africa)
This is appalling...Nigeria, we hail thee.
It is well
d presido is right abeg, haba NUT na bcs FG go pay una g d lazinex dats y una no won resume, d FG re trying jux for once make una appreciate dem, oga Jeo u talk abeg
Thank you
If we don't have any more case of ebola, we don't have any more case, period. The situation was well managed and teachers should go back to school.
if sawyer wanted cure he would ve said that he had ebola disease immediately he was admitted in that hospital but instead he wanted to leave and spread it more if not for Dr stella Rip. say what you know
Everyone is asking what the givernment has done to protect the children.
Yes sir no more mad sawyer...
THIS GOVERNMENT IS REALLY A FOOLISH ONE
I totally agree with him, and I hardly agree wit dem
Jona, u really try for this one. If you can handle other cases in Naija as you handle this ebola, Naija will be a great place to be. benotekcomputers@gmail.com
Teachers should go back to school as simple as that.
Mr president is right.
hmm if u ask me i support the nut 100% in dis make we de sure sai ebola no de again. the govt nd ma presido should provide preventive meseaures period.
We should not politisy the issue of resumption.Pls, let our children go back to school for God sake.
Thats it, all they asked is protection measures. by dobis112@gmail.com
It fell off ni o. how else do u expect someone who answers DAUDA to reason?
I am sure if u have kids,, u wont reason this way. Nothing has been put in place and u want innocent children back in classes?? U are wicked.
Anon.....u said it all.
You may take ur own kids back to school.
And u should respect urself more by keeping shut.
You are d ignorant one here. Teachers are not saying they dont want to resume....all they ask for is d necessary measures to be put in place. is that too much to ask? Dont get it twisted.
Everything he said carries no weight. The government has always proved to be foolish. No need for long talk jare
yes
I like this
Hunger and and Thirst?
HARD TIMES MAY TEST ME, THEY CANNOT DESTROY ME
Learning to be wise in Christ
END TIME VIRUS
hmmmmm,I am not certain DAT we HV bin able to contain did virus ohhh
It is not by force to take my children to school. Preventive measures should be put in place and the 21 days incubation period observed so there are no surprises. How do I tell my 4 and 2 year old not to play with their friends in school. I support NUT 100%.
that splendid mr president, let us work together NIgeria and caste out spirit of fear, i strongly believe there is nothing like EBOLA AGAIN IN OUR COUNTRY
