Addressing Government House Correspondents shortly after an emergency Security Council Meeting which he chaired yesterday November 6th, Ambode said that it had become evident that traffic crimes and robbery are mostly as a result of the menace of Okada riders and street hawkers, while commercial buses have become lawless and reckless on the road. He said the Council made far reaching decisions at the meeting in line with the commitment of his administration to ensure security of lives and property as well as the enforcing of the Rule of Law.
To this end, he said he has directed the full enforcement of the Lagos Road Traffic Laws, especially as it concerns the restriction of okada and tricycle operations. He reminded that Schedule II of the Lagos State Road Traffic Law 2012 restricts Okada, tricycle (Keke Marwa), carts and wheel barrows on some routes including Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Oworonshoki-Oshodi Expressway, Lagos-Ikorodu Expressway, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Third Mainland Bridge, Eti-Osa/Lekki –Epe Expressway, Lagos –Badagry Expressway, Funsho Williams Avenue, Agege Motor Road and Eti-Osa/Lekki Coastal Road.
“Any person who fails to comply with any of the provisions of this Section commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction as stipulated in the law. Henceforth, all commercial vehicles, except Bus Rapid Transport buses, must use only the service lanes in accordance with existing traffic laws. All conductors of Commercial buses must sit down in their buses and keep the doors closed at all times while in motion. It is against the Law for conductors to hang on the bus doors and leave the doors open. Any bus contravention will be met with severe punitive measures. Commercial buses can only drop and pick passengers at officially designated bus stops henceforth. Any illegal and indiscriminate picking and dropping of passengers is against the law. Other road users who break traffic laws will pay a compulsory traffic fine in accordance with the law. Mobile Traffic courts are being introduced to prosecute offenders promptly”.
Regarding the recurring Apapa gridlock, Ambode said the lawless activities of tank farm owners and their tanker drivers in the area will no longer be tolerated. He frowned at the fact that three months after meeting with tank farm and petrol tanker owners, they have been unable to come up with a solution to the gridlock caused by the tankers queuing up on roads and bridges to load petroleum products.
He however said that the state of affairs that has accentuated traffic gridlock in Apapa area and its environs is no longer tolerable to the State Government saying that necessary arrangements have been made with the relevant Regulatory Institutions to sanction defaulting port users - importers, tank farm owners, terminal operators and shipping companies. Governor Ambode said the Security Council decided that all tank farms be given a 90-day grace period to build loading bays for their tank farms, with a caveat that any tank farm that fails to provide a loading bay after the grace period, would be shut down by the state government.
“In addition, tank farms owners must desist from allocating pick-up papers to trucks beyond and above their daily capacity as is the case presently,” he said.
Ambode called on residents in the state to be extra vigilante duringthe remaining two months of the year
“The next hawker could be a robber or terrorist. You are now well-advised. If we all cooperate and decide not to buy, gradually and collectively, the hawkers will not come to the highways and streets anymore. Our roads will definitely become safer. Our security agencies have been directed to increase their presence on the roads and highways to ensure greater safety. Once again, I am committed to a safer, cleaner and more prosperous Lagos; a Lagos that works for all”, he said.

Deal with robbers first. Always taking out their frustration out on citizens
Only here to read Bonario's Wilheminna and Bonita comments!
Lagos was working fine before you came and we were buying anything we wanted.Stop talking and continue with what your predecessors started ( Asiwaju Tinubu and Fashola). If you spend more time working instead of trying to erase the footprints of Fashola, you will do much better.
I hope the outcome of this meeting will help in no small measure in addressing this ugly trend in Lagos state.

The hawkers should stay abeg!that's most of them only means of survival!u want to add them to the already many unemployed youths? And we all know most of these hawkers aren't the robbers! Stop blaming innocent hustlers!

What do you mean the hawkers are the robbers. The robbers don't hawk, they rob vehicles successively with full confidence sometimes carrying weapons. And you know damn well the hawkers are there because of the traffic gridlock and not the other way round. Politicians always taking the easy way out. Jokers
Too laughable,,,, may be gov ambode is just waking up from his slumber.

Nice move Mr Governor, pls ensure dey follow the rules and pls dear citizens of lagos try and work with the governor.
Clueless Ambode! no sir, the traffic thieves are the area boys that the Lagos state government has given so much powers, these guys are the ones robbing people in traffic. Stop the activities of area boys, they have too much powers, they have become a liability, even when police arrests them, the police have no use for them and are forced to release them back to society, Ambode those hawkers have become Olympians from running after cars to make 800 naira profit, it is your area boys you need to fix
Sometimes it goes just beyond reading the riot act. If these laws are strictly enforced it will really go a very long way. But then, how are the enforcing officers being empowered against bribe collection? Because that's one of the main problems

Three BOSA for you our Governor. Thank you jare and weldone.... Pls ensure these laws are implemented sir. Nice one!
Somebody just woke up for slumber! Although it's quit a pity a lot of innocent people will have to pay for this, like those whose livelihood depends only on hawking.
Talk talk.
Talk talk.
Mr. Governor the major causes of traffic in Lagos state is simply as a result of the worst state of roads in Lagos.
Majority of the roads in Lagos are simply in a sorry state.
Take note.
Sorry to say, but ambode doesn't seem like he has the will power to implement all these things he's saying.
Hope the coconut heads will listen
I don't think the hawkers are the problems we are facing. This poor boys are only looking for a way to make a living.mean while the law enforcement officers simply arrest them on the street, steal their money and products and drop them along the road.we were also been educated that this hawkers should also try to sell their products in cat parks , garages and inside the marker. But the KAI officers still walk into this areas to arrest them and steal from them.so my question is which of this offenses is more of a criminal act.please mr governor let's look at the area boys we see wondering on the road and the bus drivers to put an end to this problems.hawkers are no thieves.thanks
Hawkers don't cause traffic, they only take advantage of traffic to sell their products.the arm robbers parade the bridges and street and the police know them all.but they are simply helpless because they are unequiped and not well trained.please let's leave the hawkers and focus on our problem.mr governor please take note
The law enforcement officers are only using this laws as a means of enriching their pocket. And not doing any work to stop our problems
Did you even read it?
Lagos was working before Ambode came. Now, lawlessness has taken over. Instead of continuing with Fashola's good work, Ambode has been busy undoing Fashola's heritage and leaving residents at the mercy of robbers, traffic holdups and anarchy. Lagos has never had it so bad.Really, Eko ti baje.

, anything goes in Lagos. Indeed, Eko ti baje.
He should back up all this his talk with action!
We want action and not all dis lip service....

Nice one there.
It's as though Fashola never was. Really sad the way we take 2 steps forward and 3 backwards. The number of okada riders ferrying passengers on lekki-Ajah road is enough to tell you that they have no iota of fear for this administration. Never saw commercial bikes all through Fashola's administration, only saw courier bikes which weren't many. Some hawkers even threw stones at those KAI people that wear brown till they ran into their vehicle and fled.
My friend and I were almost robbed by a boy who appeared to be a hawker at first glance. He had naira notes in his hands and came to our window, people would think he was trying to give us change for stuff we bought NOT. He knocked on he window and pulled up his shirt, revealing a gun and asked us to wind down the window. My friend who was driving started honking like a mad person and tried to switch lanes but the traffic was at stand still. The boy calmly strolled away. All thanks to God. Ova Governor, please study how Fashola did it and continue. I can't nderstand why there is no continuity in Nigeria's governance. China is still following the master plan Mao made till date irrespective of who is in office. Why cancel everything and start from scratch instead of optmimizing existing processes? Isn't it more time consuming, expensive and an anticline?
Words are cheap!!! Enough of ur promises Ambode, ACTION is what we need....
Words are cheap!!! Ambode action is what we needed.....Before Eko will tesiwaju(Move forward) Eko must not baje.
The state government did all the needful to boost the effectiveness of the police in order to fight crime and secure our environment. Kindly tell the commissioner of police to do his own part instead of us blaming the governor
We have Nigeria police Force not Lagos police Force. Stop blaming the governor for the non performance of the commissioner of police
Get Lagos rolling again, please.
I pity them hawkers... but if we really want change, they have to leave the streets. Nigerians too biased. They ain't robbers, yes! I buy water in traffic, lots of lagosians buy dinner from them but it's so wrong.
The word is GBOSA
Ambode graceless clueless Governor, talk is cheap. What the good people of Lagos State needs is action and enforcement of these laws. Security of the state and its people is paramount, and the burden falls von you as the Governor, eat humble pie go and beg Fashola for all your atrocities. Lagosian have no faith in you.
If a man is not doing what he aught to do, he will look for who to pass the blame to. The robbers that visited Lekki/Festac few weeks ago , did they come with bike, or were they hawkers? Yet they succeed and somebody is passing blame. Do our roads, stop the traffic on our road and the hawkers will naturally leave the road... God help us.
I know a bunch of people who have been ribbed by street hawkers especially the ones who sell recharge cards. One of my staff got caught in the net of one chance danfo yesterday. They robbed her and threw her out of a moving bus. This ember season is the peak period for crime so he's doing well by enforcing tough penalties on crime and agents who aid crime. They even rob with keke napep. It's a crazy world we live in.

FASHOLA WHERE ARE YOU?????? Are you keeping mute for Ambode to finish us in the Lagos you left for us! We had it better with you as the governor. Lagos is soooooooooooooo frustrating without you. Traffic robbers have always been there no doubts but we've never had it this terrible. The roads are in shambles!!! Traffic everywhere! People leave their homes for work at ungodly hours just to beat traffic and still get robbed!!!! Akinwunmi was singing ambo...à ti dè during his campaign but the way he is going seems he is still trekking from Akure to Lagos. Just 5months and Lagos is a mess.......what will happen in 4 years?
The robbers blend in with the street hawkers, if there is a ban on street trading it would be difficult for these robbers to operate. It's a shame that street hawking can't be accommodated. But I guess in every war there is collateral damage, and in this case it is street hawking. I don't believe it will be implemented though after 2 weeks it will be business as usual. We live in a lawless society, and every officer from all the agencies is on the take.....
As a citizen,im regretting why I voted for ambode. Anybody in power is not suppose to b too hard, too slow and without action. Human beings are difficult to manage. So for you to go into governance, you need to have a strong will.i personally hate Ambode. Because the has no vision. He has made me spend more on my car. Keke is always scratching my car. Before dis wasn't possible. Because dey whr afraid. I Miss Fashola
These men surrounding him though, these are the people influencing his government.
That's why we can Neva see progress in Nigeria govt cos everybody wnts to do tyns his/her own way
